Bad Purchase.......2006-08-06
I bought this book thinking it would be similar to America according to Jon Stweart. Big Mistake! The first paragraph involving sexual acts with himself bumps this book up to adult only. It's not funny, the fake Italian accent didn't go over well with my Italian ancestry financee, and in short, it is blasphmey and Catholic Bashing. The actual Bush parts are funny, but the book was not worth the unfortunate investment. For example, one chapter had priests in the Vatican engaging in homosexual acts in the bathroom. Only the rare novel manages to combine a sharp sense of humor with fast action and still serve as a modern-day allegory. Steven Hanley manages that task in "The Legend of Bushistotle," and he appears to do it with consummate ease.
Steve is approached by email to take up a position as a librarian at the Vatican in order to translate a newly found ancient manuscript on Bushistotle -"History's Greatest Philosopher-Warrior-King." Living in ancient Athens, the manuscript says, Bushistotle was known for his catchphrase "I'm a uniter, not a divider," but also for his penchant to destroy nations and foster "progressive live-and-let-live policies as he and only he could define them: out with the bad guys and in with the good."
But the project is more Top Secret than it first appears to be, and Steve soon finds himself inducted into Cardinal Bernie Lei's Task Force B.S. project and held hostage inside the Vatican. The authorities also instruct him to translate the Greek manuscript with the specific purpose of speeding along Bushistotle's beatification. However, "cleaning up Bushistotle's record (and) spinning his pathetic history in a positive light to make him seem like a saint" is no easy task, considering that Bushistotle's follies included invading Persia in retaliation for a Spartan terrorist attack on the Athenian colony in Syracuse, Sicily.
Hanley cleverly switches between the past and the present, detailing the excesses of Bushistotle even as Steve struggles to extricate himself from his dilemma. Throughout the plot runs Hanley's distinctive brand of wit; officials at the Vatican, for example, are called Irma R. Gorgonzola and Sister Mary Subjugation, and the ancient Athenian manuscript has been partly ruined because attempts have been made to clean it with Windex! The names of the other characters - Bushistotle, his wife Constantina, and his coterie of advisors: Cheneyon, Rumsfeldiavelli, Powellonius, and Ashcroftus - are just as captivating. But in the midst of this political satire, Hanley also manages to weave in a riveting storyline, speeding it along in the end towards an absorbing, truly satisfying finish.

Perfectly satirizes G. W. Bush and the religious right, depecting them as the bumbling fools and hypocrites they really are, but that the world is just waking up to. We've been fooled long enough - about WMD's, about stealth Supreme Court nominees, about Rove and that bunch - but it's a lot better to belly laugh at them than it is to cry about them, even though that's what most of the country feels like doing.

Excellent Graded Flamenco Solos.......2007-09-21
Juan Martin's "Solo Flamenco Guitar vol 1" is not so much instructional in terms of technique but is rather a collection of beautiful, progressively graded flamenco solos in many 'palos'(rhythmic styles). Absolute begginers may get frustrated with the lack of explanation here, however, use of this book in conjunction with a method such as Dennis Kosters excellent Mel Bay presents The Keys to Flamenco Guitar, Volume 1, and the begginer will find Martins solos opening to them.
As an intermediate player I am thrilled with Mr. Martins collection and presentation. The DVD is an especially useful training tool, and entertainig on its own. In vol's 1 & 2 he has given me several years worth of material for study. I can't recommend this series highly enough. Now, I've listened to enough Paco while I write this and must pick up my guitar and play.

Juan Martin's Method .......2007-05-21
Very good method. Although it does not teaches how to do "rasqueo", "tresillos", "golpes" & "picados" (vital component for the more advanced pieces), it should give the student a basic understanding of the tempo flamenco style. Again for anything beyond level 0, those techniques are required!
Not for absolute beginners.......2007-01-16
The entry level of this book is for an advanced beginner and/or someone with prior guitar experience.
If I work at it, I can do the first two stages of the book.
Other people with greater skill than me will appreciate this book more.
The intermediate and advanced stages use the same songs as in the introductory stages, but with much more difficult technique and variation.
Sometimes, simpler is better.
I give a 4 out of 5 because the songs are good, layout good and the 2 CD's are very good. One is a music CD and the other is an instructional video to watch and learn.
Great help if you are trying to teach yourself how to play.

This was money well spent. The DVD and CD are fun to listen to on their own even without a goal of studying flamenco. Juan Martin's demeanor is very warm and his short anecdotes are interesting. The material itself was useful, well-documented and easy to understand.
Before I bought this, I wasn't sure if I wanted to dedicate too much time towards flamenco guitar but after watching some of the video and trying some of the pieces I felt more inspired to study and practice flamenco guitar.
As long as the buyer understands that this is intended more as a repertoire book than a basic instructional book then the buyer should enjoy this book and DVD. This product is not intended as a basic How-To for flamenco guitar.

Recent years have seen a shift in the belief that a religious world-view, specifically a Christian one, precludes a commitment to environmentalism. Whether as "stewards of God's creation" or champions of "environmental justice," church members have increasingly found that a strong pro-ecology stand on environmental issues is an integral component of their faith. But not all Christian denominations are latecomers to the issue of environmentalism. In Creation and the EnvironmentCalvin W. Redekop and his co-authors explain the unique environmental position of the Anabaptists, in particular the Mennonites.
After a brief survey of the major forces contributing to the word's present ecological crisis, Creation and the Environment explores the uniquely Anabaptist view of our relationship to what they see as the created order. In rural Amish and Mennonite communities, they explain, the environment--especially the "land"--is considered part of the Kingdom God plans to establish on earth. In this view, the creation is part of the divine order, with the redemption of humankind inextricably linked to the redemption and restoration of the material world. The well-being a purpose of creation and human history are thus seen as completely interdependent.
