An extremely helpful book.......2004-06-09

This is one of those books many of us wish we had had 25 years ago. Personally it would have saved me many hours of aimless work and some dreadfully poor interviews in which I did not hear what the prospect was clearly saying. This would have saved me some bad hires. They are expensive. This is one of those books I read and kept spilling my coffee from slapping my forehead and saying "DOH! Of course!"

Ms. Kelley does an excellent job of covering the theories of employment law--a real, expensive and complicated snake-pit--and then in cutting to the chase and giving the reader a step-by-step on what to do and when. I like step-by-step. I was married once, and I can do that.

When a person with her credentials says, "Do this, then this," I can do that with some precision. I don't have to deal with the theory if I don't want to. I can cut to the chase, which is what she does. One is always aware of nuances in hiring. She teaches one how to cover the basics.

I hired "creative" people and one expects a 10-15% Flake Factor. Her principles weed out the psychopaths from your average creative person.

Whether you are an entry-level hirer or an old poot like me, this is a simply great book. Using it will save you a lot of grief.

I have been to $800 seminars about hiring that did not teach me as much as this book did.

This book is packed with extremely useful information from cover to cover. As a small business owner, my experience with hiring employees is limited, but Hiring Right has definitely improved my ability to evaluate not only potential employees but also what type of worker we actually need as well as how to find them.

Pat Kelley writes in an easy-to-understand style that makes reading Hiring Right a real pleasure. She masterfully combines big-picture overviews, great examples, useful tips and detailed information to make this book a complete resource for professional human resource managers and business owners.

Exceptional book.......2006-03-21

It you are interested in finding out how people surmount all odds to become successful, then read this book. Tori Amos is interesting, deep, thoughtful and an enigma. Lots of photos, too. Worth the read.

Alternate Book Cover.......2006-03-20

I have this book except Tori is wearing something with spaghetti staps on the cover. I like the book cover that I own better than this one shown on Amazon. This book would be better if the Discography section had photos of album and single covers. I don't really consider myself a Tori fan anymore. Especially since I've never seen her live. And "Strange Little Girls" really annoyed me. The last album I bought was "Scarlet's Walk." It was the Limited Edition that came with all the inexplicable junk (the "polaroids" and lizard pendant). I'm thinking about getting "...For Easy Piano" book though. I have the "Little Earthquakes book and...let's just say I can play the beeline at beginning of "Silent All These Years" and that's it.

From A Tori Fan.......2003-07-20

A nicely written, brief review of Tori Amos' musical history up until the BFP album. While the biography includes only some Tori quotes and intropective info, it mainly focuses on her life as a mucisian. There are great tid-bits that breifly discribe her brilliance as an amazing human/mucisian, and great pics of her recording for each album. I would reccomend adding this biography to any book collection.

Great pictures but little information on Tori, the person........2002-12-29

I gave this book four stars though I was thoroughly disappointed. It had great color pictures, a tour itinerary, a discography (Up to _Boys for Pele_, the book was published right after that album), and, of course, wonderful "Tori-isms." However, it was painfully obvious that this was an authorized biography. Not that I want 500 pages of pure dirt on Tori, but this was more sanitized than most of her interviews. The hyperbole that Rogers (the author) sprinkles throughout makes you feel she is more a fan than an author. Not that is a bad thing in itself, but it makes you doubt the validity of many recounted episodes (was the show breath-taking or was Rogers' breath taken away?) Also, many facts that Tori fans know off-hand are glossed over. Eric Rosse is referred to as her producer throughout and only once, when Rogers briefly covered the development of _Pele_, did she mention that they "separated." If you aren't a Tori fan, you might think Rogers meant professionally, not personally. This sort of omission made me wonder what else was left out.

So: If you want good pictures and and overview of the nuts and bolts of Tori's rise, then this is great book. But if you want to know more about Tori as a person and her life, then this book doesn't contain anything you don't already know. A must for fans, a good start for new fans, but pass if you want something comprehensive.

Well-written, informative, and a Tori photo treasure-trove.......2002-08-11

I didn't have very high expectations when I bought this book. Tori Amos is notoriously coy, cryptic, and evasive with interviewers, so I expected a pretty but unenlightening volume riddled with errors (in the tradition of the Tori Amos interview CDs). I was pleasantly surprised. The biography is well-balanced and gives Tori's formative childhood years as much weight as each era of her career. To my surprise, I learned a couple of things I didn't know about Tori. The photographs are beautiful, and what a treat it was to see so many showing young "Myra Ellen" and her family!

The one drawback I can see is that this book was published in 1996, and thus is missing Tori's three most recent albums, as well as her marriage and the birth of her daughter. Perhaps we can hope for an updated edition in the future.

Sean Keeps SCM Real.......2006-05-18

Compared to the last title I read (Moreira's SCM Implementation Roadmap), Real World SCM has a considerably lighter tone (more axiomatic than prescriptive, and with some humor), not so much like a textbook. That is not a knock on Mr. Moreira; both books have their place. If you need a recipe (and forms) for creating an SCM process, get the Roadmap book. If you are a developer looking to expand your horizons, try Real World SCM.

The first four chapters present an overview of the SCM role, process, and tools. I can't quibble with any of the info presented -- my only advice would be to consider including a review of CA's Harvest tool. [...], it is one of the most popular (or one of the most buggy) source control tools available after CVS, VSS, and maybe ClearCase.

The write-up on Perforce piqued my interest. Maybe it's time to finagle an evaluation copy.

I photocopied "The Golden Rules of SCM" (p.15) and stuck it on the wall of my cube.

I skipped the chapters on CVS and VSS.

Chapter 7 also has some useful tips.

I skipped chapters 8 - 10 because I work in a Java web shop, using ant for builds, and a custom app for deployments.

Chapter 11 has some useful tips on deployment. I'm glad that most people recognize a need to manage components such as the database; I've yet to encounter an easy-to-use and consistent solution to that particular problem. Maybe my DBA can reverse-engineer our schema and hand over the scripts to version control.

To sum, the general sections will be helpful to the typical (i.e. self-trained) SCM or developer-cum-SCM; those who work in shops that build executables, deploy to clients, use CVS, VSS or .Net will find the tool-specific chapters useful. Some may need more organization in how the author presents his advice, but many readers should walk away with a reasonable amount of additional knowledge.

Rare coverage of VSS!.......2006-03-10

If you are stuck using Microsoft's code control tool, this book may give you some practical info on branching, pinning, and all that other VSS garbage. I researched a bunch of CM books and this was the only one that detailed VSS branching.

Excellent Tool.......2005-06-09

I am a CM for a Visual SourceSafe environment and I'm glad I read the reviews here and picked up this book. It is a wonderful resource not only for anyone working with SourceSafe, but for anyone doing Configuration Management work period. I highly recommend it. I made the mistake of rushing out and getting it at Barnes & Noble when I could have ordered it here and got it in a couple days for about $15 less.

If you are a Configuration Manager or you need some good tips on CVS or SourceSafe you will definitely want to pick this up. It is the best book I have seen on SourceSafe. There is not a great deal of documentation on SourceSafe other that what you can find researching on the internet and compiling your own CM manual which I did. This is a great addition to what I have already found on the subject.

Realistic and practical. Right amount of info.......2004-06-19

SCM books range from highly detailed to general overviews. This one has just enough theory and background, and a lot of detail for two specific environments: (1) CVS and (2) SourceSafe. If you are not using either tool this book may not be the best resource.

Highlights include the way the book covers the use of the two tools in great detail, ensuring that readers in Microsoft and UNIX/Linux environments have realistic guidelines for implementing and effectively using SCM in their specific environments. Note that the examples are slanted towards the Microsoft .NET and Linux environments, which make this material relevant to a significant number of readers.

SCM as a discipline is clearly and succinctly covered. I like the way the book examines both roles and processes, and the emphasis on tasks. These make this book one of the most practical I've read because nuances of each tool, as well as unique build requirements for each of the environments are clearly covered.

If you work with either CVS or SourceSafe and want to quickly learn how to best employ either tool in their target environments for an effective SCM process this book will prove invaluable.

Great Overview.......2003-11-16

Keneflick talks like he knows the business of source control and builds. My knowledge of these critical functions was based on experience and errors. (Hey, I'm a code monkey!) After reading the first seven chapters I now have a better idea how software configuration should function.

The book also provides a working knowledge of CVS, SourceSafe, and scripting builds.

Very good. Couldn't put this book down once I got into it. The artwork was very interesting. Between the authors narrative, the survivor accounts, and the illustrations, I really got into this book, which is about the last night.

Outstanding.......2001-07-10

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were some real treats in it like the analysis of Captain Smith, who was portrayed by piecing together a whole bunch of survivor statements, which ended up showing a captain who remained involved and on the ball after the collision. I also liked the treatment of a potential third boat (besides the Californian)in the area during and after the Titanic's sinking. This is the first book I read that also showed the captain leaving the bridge only minutes before the impact (instead of the more common portrayal of a little after 9 p.m.) Very interesting.

There are a lot of Titanic books out there, and this is one of several of them that is both informative and entertaining (there are some enjoyable new illustrations in this book as well).

Excellent.......2000-10-11

Paul Quinn really does his homework - and follows through with the hard but necessary research that is not evident in so many other Titanic books. He goes through all the court transcripts with a fine-tooth comb, apparently with no particular ax to grind, and simply lets the facts lead where they may. For example, we learn that First Officer Murdoch, who was evidently involved in the final panic and shooting near the bridge, was also much more involved in both port and starboard boat launchings than has been suggested in earlier works. Up to the moment of the rush(s) on the last boat(s), Murdoch was the one officer who kept his head and launched the boats properly. Quinn is also a good painter, and is the first artist to actually portray what survivors saw (and could not see) under real lighting conditions.

New Insights into Old Sources.......2000-09-20

Paul Quinn has an ability to look at what everyone else has seen (chiefly the British and American Inquiries into the loss of the Titanic) and to think what no one else has thought. This ability defines genius. In his latest book, for example, he follows First Officer William Murdoch throughout the sinking and reveals that it was Murdoch's competence that saved MOST of the people who got off in the lifeboats that night, revealing that there was much more to this man than would be suggested by those of us who have spent what now appears to be too much time focusing on the last ten minutes of his life. One may not always agree with Quin's conclusions (for example, some fine details of the flooding sequence); but agree or disagree, he always makes you think, and rethink, what you thought you already knew. I'll continue to buy all of his books on this subject, just to see what breath of fresh air he next blows on to a tale from the good old, old, old days.

Liked this book a lot. Strings survivor statements together in an hour by hour timeline that made me feel like I was right there on the ship. Good color illustrations and b&w photos too. Had to special order this book but worth it.
