5 out of 5 stars Great and Honest Book.......2007-09-04

This is a great book. I have always been interested in "The day the music died" I had read several books and magazine articles about Buddy Holly's life but there was little in the way of the actual Winter Dance Party or the other musicians. I purchased this book and was shocked at how well and detailed the accounts of the musicians lives and the aftermath of the plane crash was. Larry Lehmer did an excelent job and should be commended on telling the truth not just what Buddy Holly's widow wanted or others who are wanting to cover the truth about what life was really like for all those involved. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in rock and roll, Buddy Holly or just 50's style music.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-03-04

This book is great because it not only tells of the careers of those involved in the Winter Party Tour, but also tells details leading up the crash (including stops in many small towns along the way). It was quite informative.
Buddy Holly is the best known, yet most elusive and enigmatic of all Rock 'n' Roll legends. This man was a genius. The way he constructed his songs was sensational.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily readable and entertaining rock history.......2005-01-21

Larry Lehmer has crafted one of the better journalistic books about a historical rock 'n' roll event. He brings a newspaperman's observations and senses to the project, which connects all the dots in the tragic last tour for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. "The Day the Music Died" is not only entertaining -- somber and occasionally macabre in appropriate moments, and humorous elsewhere -- but it describes the days and weeks leading up to the tragic crash in Clear Lake through the eyes of people who were there. In each case, he paints a vivid portrait of a fallen star, making their stories all the more tragic. To read this book is to understand how American rock 'n' roll evolved from its early, innocent roots toward the fragmented, even chaotic market it encompasses today. I highyl recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Superb - get one before they're gone, again.......2004-05-11

The initial first run of this great book was not around very long and people have been begging since for a reprint and here it is! This one is hard to put down, it is intriguing, informative and FACTUAL, which most Buddy book are not (avoid the Amburn book at all costs). What is particularily nice is that it features a great deal of updated info about the last tour & crash, info about Roger Peterson, and a good deal about Ritchie & The Bopper that usually doesn't get included. Lehmer talks to people that were at the shows, helped with the Tour, etc. No wild theories here, just the facts. Top notch in every regard. You see any bad reviews here? 'Nuff said!

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've seen on the subject.......2001-09-10

Lehmer's book is downright exhaustive in the coverage of the fateful Feb. 3 1959 plane crash that killed Holly, Valens, and Richardson.

I appreciated the detail and content of this book a lot. Being from Iowa, I have been interested in the Winter Dance party, and accounts of the crash for a very long time. (In fact, I just visited the Surf Ballroom and Mason City Airport while returning from a recent weekend vacation.)

Lehmer's book is very well-balanced, with chapters devoted to each of the three headliners. And it also has detailed plane crash info as well as analysis of the official CAB report.

In my opinion, easily the best book on "The Day The Music Died".

                  4 out of 5 stars DINER HISTORY.......2001-07-01

I am a sucker for diners, diner food and those great 1940's-1950's color postcards of diners all over the USA.

Part 1 of "Where Have You Gone...?" collects some of the best of those postcards in full page, full color reproductions and then explains the history of each place and its current(if still standing) location, staff, specialties, etc. Parts 2 and 3 examine, in photographs and text, the diners of today and the final entry celebrates the re-opening and re-vitalization of the Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine, a 70 year-old dining landmark.

The text is colorful, but verges on the mundane. However, the photographs and reproductions are first rate: We'll unfortunately never again see the beauty of the Art Deco design for the Court Cafe in Albuquerque, New Mexico or the main dining room/gas station and smaller cottages that made up the Dutch Mill Village of South Glasgow, Kentucky---They were all shaped like perfect, tiny windmills. Where but at Hick's Drive In on the Dixie Highway in Louisville, Kentucky would you find a circular building, a horseshoe shaped counter and an interior constructed entirely of glass?

My personal favorite postcard is of the Victory Cafe in Mattoon, Illinois--not that it is the most glamorous, but simply because it reminds me of my childhood, Saturday lunches at Baumgart's in Hackensack, New Jersey.

When/If you go antiquing, do you wander over to the bins of yellowing postcards? Then this book is for you.

                  5 out of 5 stars re: Pete's Cafe.......2001-01-25

No, there's no fiction in this lovely book. Many of the illustrations are from old post card, very nicely reproduced. The Pete's Cafe illustration was from an earlier, destroyed incarnation of Pete's Cafe.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, for those who love revisiting the past........1999-04-23

The first thing I saw in this book was Hicks Drive Inn Restaurant in surburban Louisville, Kentucky. I grew up near this restaurant have many fond memories of it. It was as wonderful as the book indicates. Next I spotted Stebbins Grill in downtown Louisville on Chestnut Street (before it was Mohammed Ali Boulevard). The author refers to it as the most upscale restaurant in the book. So upscale that I recall being able to afford only to look longingly at it from the outside! On the front cover is Pete's Cafe in Boonville, Mo, which I remember from a family vacation--one of those places advertised for miles in advance along the highway. And the pork chops were wonderful!

However, I want to tell the author that he missed the REAL Starlight Cafe--still operating, and under that name--in Terlingua, Texas (in the Big Bend area). Wonderful food--the shrimp-kabob tacos and cold beer are gifts from heaven in this beautiful remote hot and arid area. The decor is that of an ancient theatre--the original function; but it really more closely resembles a funky cave!

4 out of 5 stars American Roadside Nostalgia at its Best!!!!!!.......1999-04-09

Who says you can't go back!! Read one of the restaurant descriptions;close your eyes and there's mom and pop catering to your every need. A great era of America's bygone days straight from the actual postcards of days past as well as the memories of those who were there with their own homespun rememberances. A bonus are the top ten pie recipes from the actual restaurants! Enjoy:the book and the pies. Thanks Mr. Anderson for a job well done......I remember those times........

                  2 out of 5 stars Mystery of Pete's Cafe.......1999-02-09

I've only seen reviews in the New York Times and another magazine, but the picture of Pete's Cafe in this book doesn't resemble the Pete's Cafe I remember just off of I-70 on old US 40 in Booneville, MO. Is there some fiction in this book?

Anyone who installs Windows 2000, creates a user, or adds a printer is a 2000 system administrator. This book covers all the important day-to-day administrative tasks, and the tools for performing each task are included in a handy easy-to-look-up alphabetical reference. What's the same and what's different between the Windows 2000 and Windows NT platform? Has the GUI or the networking architecture changed, and if so, how? Windows 2000 Administration in a Nutshell addresses the problems associated with bridging the gap between the Windows NT and Windows 2000 platforms. This book covers: Whether the concern is new security issues or how Active Directory works, Windows 2000 Administration in a Nutshell is as useful to the single-system home user as it is to the administrator of a 1,000-node corporate network.

                        5 out of 5 stars THE W2K handbook.......2002-04-11

I have a number of O'Reilly books and have come to expect a lot from them. However, this one raises the standard. Concepts and tasks are listed alphabetically, providing an encyclopedic approach which makes finding topics a snap and beats looking up 50 references in an index to find the one you want. I only wish more tech manuals were organized this way. Perhaps the idea will catch on.
This is not to leave out Mitch Tulloch's writing which, although concise, is highly readable - a rarity in technical manuals (with the exception of the esteemed Mr. Minasi!). Although this book is not meant as a tutorial, I actually found that the organization helped me in understanding certain topics better. This is because each topic is treated in its entirety rather than scattered here and there throughout the book. As mentioned in an above review, this does lead to some redundancy, but the payoff is worth it.
Although I have discovered a lack of information on a couple of more obscure items, overall the book is very comprehensive with virtually no filler material. Of the four W2K handbooks I have, this is the one that remains as my prime reference. It is simply invaluable.

4 out of 5 stars Good companion to the W2K Resource Kits.......2001-09-07

This book is the 80/20 rule in motion. 80% of the day to day issues are resolved with 20% of the product information. The key is knowing which 20%. This book seems to have done a fairly good job of distilling out the 20% most often needed and putting it in a single package. It falls short of a 5 star rating due to organization. Presenting the W2K concepts in alphabetical order is confusing and counter productive. It would have been far better done if the concepts had been organized in a logical hierarchy leaving the referred-to tasks, procedures and utilities in alphabetical order. Overall a very handy manual for W2K setup and admin once you get past the layout.

                        1 out of 5 stars Rather confusing.......2001-06-15

This book didn't work for me, though I like Nutshell books. I think that alphabetical approach didn't work this time. It might be good for utilities and commands, but for Tasks and Concepts? It's much easier to find what you want on topic basis. And why on earth to use alphabetical approach if most books have good index? I have discovered another book, "Mastering W2K Server" by Mark Minasi. That book is great. I have found there everything I needed. It has a lot of cross-references to NT and even 95/98 without boasting much about it. Nutshell book arrogantly states that you have to be very good at NT to read it. I think that might be just to cover up the confusion created. True, Minasi's book is 50% more expensive, but it's twice bigger also, and much more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Great mini manual!.......2001-06-07

Even though it is over 700 pages I call it mini because of the complexity of Windows 2000, and that the Microsoft reference set is over 7000 pages! First off this is NOT a book for beginners and the author states that on the first page - it is intended for NT experienced people as a quick reference for Windows 2000 networking. No OSI model explaination here. Depending on how much time and depth you want to spend learning Windows 2000, you might first want to pick up Mark Minasis' Mastering Windows 2000 Server 3RD edition which I highly recommend. Active Directory and dns are a big deal in Windows 2000, which takes some time to master and calls for very detailed explainations and examples. However Windows 2000 Administration IN A Nutshell is another winner from O'Reilly. The layout of the book is unique in that instead of a bunch of topic chapters it is broken down into segments on concepts, tasks, consoles, utilities, and commands. Each chapter is conveniently indexed by alphabetical highlighting of subjects to find what you need fast. Page 354 under F for example - folder redirection, about one page on how to do it. No fluff here - just the facts and a lots of them. There is a lot of redundancy here which may bug some people, but this is not a training manual though I consider this book an excellent read for upgrade MCSE studies. There are a LOT of helpful tables, charts, and "boxed" highlights of important topics (such as the one on page 151 "Using Universal Groups"). The author has a section called notes after most topics that are answers to a lot of questions one might have after reading it - the section on disks has 28 such notes, dynamic disks are new to us NT folks and I found them vey helpful. The quick start section has five pages of charts listing Windows NT tools and then the Windows 2000 couterpart and how to access it. There is a full 124 page chapter of administering Windows 2000 from the command line in an alphabetical list! Overall I find the writing style of the author very articulate, non confusing, and enjoyable considering it is a quick reference. Mitch sprinkes enough humor in the text to keep it from becoming tearfully dry. On page 143 he says "The Resource Kit is expected to swell to a staggering 15,000 pages - unless legal action by Greenpeace blocks it." The author obviously knows his stuff on Windows 2000. Windows 2000 Administration In A Nutshell is a great book that will prove very handy to many people using Windows 2000.

                        4 out of 5 stars Desktop Reference.......2001-05-22

This is a great desktop reference book for the Win 2k Network Administrator. It has all of the big subjects, but without the unnecessary content. Subjects are easily broken down by sections and available for quick reference. Sections include concepts, tasks, console, and a great section on command line functions. Within each section are the specific 2k subjects i.e. AD, TCP/IP, Install, DNS, DHCP, etc. A great little book.

                          Book Description

This critical study traces the continuity of ideas regarding gender and moral authority in late-medieval and Reformation France. Its central concern is to interpret changing attitudes toward social and political relationships that once supported the public authority of successive queens, foremost Catherine and Marie de Medici, who presided over the French Polity, including elite institutions of the royal court and law courts. While modern scholars write vigorously about the character of French public law, arguing that jurists intentionally forged a cannon of law that excluded women from the lawful jurisdiction of government, this study reveals considerable evidence of the topoi of devotion to the queens of France by those who suffered through the political and religious contests of their age.

In E=mc 2, David Bodanis took the life's work of one of history's greatest geniuses and made it "astonishingly understandable" (Parade) to the everyday reader. Now he takes the reader through an average day in and around an average house, showing us the fascinating science beneath the surface-from the static between radio stations, to the millions of pillow mites that snuggle up with us every night, from the warm electric fields wrapped around a light bulb filament, to what really makes the garden roses red. With wit, whimsy, and delightful detail, David Bodanis explains it all in ordinary words--on an extraordinary tour...

4 out of 5 stars Hairy world up close.......2005-07-25

The things that happen around us every day are very easy to miss unless a time comes when one reaches for a book such as this one.

People think that if it's not in their face, then it doesn't exist, but this book tells you like it is!

                            It follows an average household in two major sections Day and Night;
Then breaks activities into- morning, midday, afternoon,
then : early evening, dinner continues, Bed & bath.

The writing is humorous at times, scientifically proven, accurate and most of all, very interesting and not hard to comprehend.

If you ever wondered what's in your toothpaste (chalk, water, paint, seaweed, anti-freeze, paraffin oil, detergent, peppermint and formaldehyde),
in your margarine (lard, fish fat, sulfurs, deodorizers, color and some sunflower oil, so that it can be painted on the side of the tub as wholesome),
what's in commercial cake mix, why roses are red, how many dust mites- its dead family members- and their poop you sleep and walk on, the history if the fork, dining room table, music, talk, light bulb, why your blue jeans are blue ( decaying oil produced but certain flowers is the tint) , if you ever knew that the lightning bolt is 5 times hotter than the sun itself, what really happens when you flush the toilet and how many days ( 11 to be exact) suspended germs can hover over it, how long that meat that you buy in the store has been lying around for ( 10 days, for muscles of animal to relax after rigor mortis ) and other bizarre interesting things you touch and breather in, then this is the book for you.
Don't be scared, it won't make anyone an alarmist, but it's a great tool on learning fascinating info and keeping germs at bay.

Knowledge is power. Who knew that invention (the long time it really took) to popularize soap meant end of many plagues and common reasons why people lived do short.

Now you will know many fun facts too. Great read, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Extraordinary Book of Extraordinary Science.......2005-01-19

This book (The Secret House: The Extraordinary Science of an Ordinary Day) follows one perfectly normal day in the house of two people. Starting with the alarm clock going off and ending with a late night bath, this book portrays the science behind all the normal things that are usually taken for granted by most. One man however (the author David Bodanis), does not let these things go unnoticed. He shows us what our eyes cannot see. These things include, what gives potato chips their snap, why jeans are blue, what is crawling into your food when you are not looking, what you kick up when you take a step, the damage you could do with the twist of the foot, the millions and millions of tiny mites and creatures crawling across your face as you read this review, and many, many other things, far to many for me to list here. The types of things Bodanis analyzes and breaks down are interesting, amazing, and in most cases, shocking. Without a doubt, this will be one of the most eye opening books you will ever read.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to find what is actually going on in their homes when they are there, and the things that go on in your homes when you are not there. This book had my interest from the front cover to the back cover. I will be honest, when I first got this book, I got it mostly because of the easy language and the fairly short number of pages. After finishing it though, I am immediately thankful that I did end up getting it. The language is very simple to understand. Some of the things discussed are not simple topics, but Bodanis does a great job of breaking it down into much simpler things, and much of the time, drawing metaphors to topics that a non-chemist will understand. A lot of the time, I found myself reading pages over, not because I did not understand them, but because I wanted to re-read some of the amazing things he says in this book. Any person can relate to this book, because it is about an ordinary day, which every person has had. I suggest this book to anyone that would be interested in what goes on beneath the surface of their daily routine.

3 out of 5 stars A review for "The Secret House".......2005-01-19

This is a very good book if you would like to know many things that go on around your house. It takes you through the average day of a man and a womens life and tells you the science behind everything that they are doing.
The book is kind of boring because it goes into too much detail on things. Instead on being a paragraph or two it goes for about 3 pages on one thing. I was so bored it was hard for me to read the whole thing. So unless you want to know more about your house and the things that go on I suggest the you read this book and if you do not want to know i suggest that you dont waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars A bit broader focus than the title suggests.......2004-03-19

There are over 2 million distinct creatures on your cheek, chin and nose, and more on your forehead. You can't ever scrub them all off. They're pretty harmless anyway. Unless you're in an exotic location, sand particles from the Sahara desert are present in your room right now. In every cubic foot of air in your house, there are 3,00,000 odd items floating about, like micro insect limbs, sea salt, tire meltings ...etc This book reveals the present but unnoticed aspects of our daily lives. Using a chronological device of a typical day, the author examines typical activities like brushing, bathing, cooking, eating, even walking (and talking) and exposes the physical intricacies behind them. He also examines mundane products like toothpastes, soaps, cakes and reveals the components and their manufacturing process. By the end of the book, some of your notions, especially on "cleanliness", might get revised. A very interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars A look at the little things around us.......2003-07-20

Bodanis has taken our everyday world and exposed, magnified and explained it in a fascinating book. He takes us through a "typical" day and shows us what we don't see as we get up, shower, dress, go about our day and have dinner. In this he shows us what we don't see going on around us, and uses it as a chance to tell stories of how things came to be in our modern life [for example, talking about historical roots of the dining table]. For the most part, while he tells you about the millions of microscopic things that live on and around you, he does so without being alarmist. Sometimes though, I could have done without his information - he's ruined cakes for me now after a rather unsettling story of their making. In all the reader is entertained and may learn a thing or two. This book would go well with more serious books like "The Secret Life of Germs" by Philip M. Tierno. I also agree with another reviewer, the hard bound copy has spectacular pictures that make it worth the while to try and find that copy if you can.

                              Book Description

Stirring our feelings while raising awareness, the GREENPEACE CALENDAR brings us face-to-face with the wilderness. A wilderness as majestic as the Serra dos Orgãos soaring above the Brazilian rain forest. As intimate as a mother and baby orangutan in Indonesia. As thrilling as a pod of dolphins darting through Hawaii's clear blue water, as heart stopping as the faraway look on a Belizean jaguar's face. And capturing, in image after image, the beautiful, mysterious, often sublime power that nature holds in our imagination. Working successfully for 13 strong years, the calendar is also a gallery for the world's finest nature photographers. This year, Thomas Mangelsen, Erwin and Peggy Bauer, Art Wolfe, and Frans Lanting guide us to the place where the highway ends and the natural world begins.
