Are you curious about what Elder Golden said in General Conference? Not the heresay folklore jokes, but what he actually said in Conferences? This book relies solely on the official Conference Reports for the stories. And boy, they are just as funny as any other J Golden Kimball story!

This book is set up topically, so it is essentially the "Teachings of J. Golden Kimball." One of this things that this book brought home is that Elder Golden wasn't a traveling court jester, but he did actually have a High and Holy calling as an especial witness of the name of Jesus Christ. Yes, he did say what he said, but he also preached the Gospel and had a testimony of God and Joseph Smith. We appreciate his manner and approach to explaining principles, but thre was serious behind all the humor

Challenging.......2007-10-01

There are some prerequisites to use this book effectively:
1. Get a metronome and use it.
2. Be patient. I thought I could rip through these exercises one after another but I find that I'm spending several sessions on each exercise to reach the speed and accuracy I want. You really need to memorize the exercises so you can practice them frequently.
3. Set aside the time to concentrate on this book. An hour a day is probably enough to move forward through the lessons. It gets harder as you turn the pages.
4. Resolve. This is a challenging program that Petrucci has put together. It would be easy to put it aside and do something that is more fun.
However, my playing has IMPROVED! I go back to songs I had attempted in the past and find I can rip through passages I stumbled on before.
The book works.

A Must for aspiring guitarists and Dream Theater enthusiasts.......2007-07-17

I think this is much more beneficial than the Rock Discipline video. John explains his exercises clearly and they are very constructive. I've been playing guitar for some 13 years before I picked this up, and even though I've only spent a couple weeks with this book (and a metronome I just as recently bought), I have noticed some improvement in my playing.

This book is exactly what I was looking for . I have been playing guitar from last 6 years but know quite a bit of theory but I could not apply that much. What this book did was to show me a way forward , to correct some of my notions and to reinforce my concept. John is a great guitarist and amazing musician. The way he deconstructs solos makes you think why cant anyone do it . But as per John's sagely advice, it took him months and months of hard work and practice to be able to belt out such magnificent riffs. I would recommend this book for people who are into advancing stage of guitaring and are in rut so that they can understand and comprehend art of music better . Wonderful book.

Worthwhile.......2007-07-09

I've bought multitudes of instructional materials for guitar over the years and would have to rate this as well as his earlier publication, Rock Discipline at the top of the heap. Exercises definitely improve independent finger coordination, timing, picking technique, and stretching. I would recommend these two titles.

Not For the Novice.......2007-05-16

If you're a novice and unfamiliar with scalar and modal guitar playing, get familiar with these before you try this. Good examples of tweaking scales and licks with non-diatonic and chromatic flavors. Tons of great exercises that really will improve your playing if you work at it. If you don't know a dominant seventh from a sus four, start with the basics.

Talk about over-hype from reviewer #1!

This "manual" is thin on substantive content, with TONS of whitespace & whitepages to stretch it out to ~125pages. The documentation of the code should be available as a PDF with files on MATLAB's file exchange or on the publisher's website. Save yourself some $$.

Excellent toolbox to learn & use........2004-07-09

I was one of the early access recipient of this toolbox and found it extremely useful. It basically has a whole bunch of cleaning and classification algos.

The toolbox also allows one to extend its use with new algorithms, tweaks or to use our dataset. As long as its formatted in the same fashion.

I would strongly recommend this toolbox, if you are looking for additional material, another book worth having is Christopher Bishop's book.

I don't know how I missed this guy. He is great. I would say that he is in the I.F. Stone category. He has been around forever and has written volumes, but I only found out about him via a volume that I picked up at a yard sale. The book was called "The Great Thoughts". And it is exactly what the title implies. I have had it on my bed stand for years. Finally I decided to look up the name on the cover - Compiled By Geroge Seldes. So I then sent for this book. It is great and when I finish it I will probably order another by Mr. Seldes. He was obviously a "cool" old man.

The author George Seldes is a name unknown to the vast majority of Americans, including those who read newspapers. Yet his pioneering newsletter In Fact, along with a supreme dedication to jounalistic integrity and Jeffersonian ideals, qualify him as one of the key journalists of the 20th century. He set the standards that many liberal muckrakers of today work to emulate, including, for example, the late and more widely known I.F. Stone.

The book's title Witness to a Century is an apt one. As a foreign correspondent, he had an uncanny knack for being at the right places at the right time while history was being made. His recollections of such key figures as Mussolini, Lenin, Tito, Mc Carthy, Roosevelt, and others are priceless. It's doubtful that any one person non-head of state met with as many shapers of history as Seldes, even as the book profiles his many encounters with cultural figures of the day: Picasso, Sinclair Lewis, Ford Maddox Ford, and the Paris literary scene of the 1920's. With this stellar background, readers could expect an exceptional reminiscence on the century past. However, I was somewhat disappointed in the result. Fellow reviewer Goldberg points out how the last two chapters tend to fade, and he is correct. In fact, the book as a whole seems rather loose and disjointed, with little segue from one chapter to the next other than a rough timeline. And while many of the personal portraits remain vivid and edifying--von Hindenburg weeping over Germany's defeat by fresh American troops--the work as a whole is the result of a distinguished journalist past his prime. Still and all, his observations on the press reporting of his day may surprise some readers. Managed news accounts, the result of kowtowing to wealth and power, was even more flagrant in his day than now, suggesting, I suppose, some refinement of method. There is material here for several volumes, and I suspect that were he 20 years younger, such would have been the result. As it stands, the work is more a compilation of loose snapshots, than in-depth portraits.

Nonetheless, no historian of the 20th century, amateur or professional, can afford to pass up such primary material. Seldes was not only an outstanding jounalist, but as the record shows, an outstanding American as well. Regretably, his like seems to have faded from the scene, leaving mainstream journalism to generation after generation of pack-following pygmies.

Interesting, Readable, Informative.......2001-09-27

Seldes primarily describes his years as a foreign correspondent in this solid memoir. Seldes began as a cub reporter for the Pittsburgh Leader in 1909, but was soon overseas covering World War One, and then Weimar Germany, Bolshevik Russia, Fascist Italy, and the Spanish Civil War. I liked the author's analysis, not to mention his portraits of such figures as Generals Pershing and Hindenburg, Mussolini, Lenin, Trotsky, etc. Seldes scorns the era's conservative publishers for failing to cover many important issues, a problem he combated with his newsletter IN FACT from 1940-50. Sadly, today's corporate media barons also avoid certain issues. I gave the book four stars because the last chapters tend to fade - Seldes wrote them while in his mid-90's. Still, WITNESS TO A CENTURY provides an excellent look at many events that helped shape today's world.

George Seldes (1890-1995) was an outstanding journalist, one who respected truth until the day he passed at age 104. As his obituary noted, nearly until the end he was still discussing world events with admirers who phoned or visited his home in rural Vermont.

Liberal Press? Thank God........1999-12-24

For all those screaming about the liberal press, I say Thank God. If you don't agree, you don't know the facts, or don't want to acknowledge the facts. Read this book and you will never again complain about liberal reporters all of whom work for conservative publishers. Thank God for GeorgeSeldes and his courage to tell the truth about a Century of fighting against the takeover of our democracy by fascism.

Fascinating perspective on events that formed our century........1999-07-28

Seldes, as usual,gives a clear,no holds barred account of the events that formed our world as it is presently constituted. He discusses forces that,usually unmentioned, have molded our world outlook. His historical anecdotes are gems, and to anyone reading this book many landmark events in history will never look the same.
