Outdated and should NOT be used!.......2007-08-17
The NEC is updated every 3 years, the 2008 is out and shipped in October 2007. The states usually take a year or so to review and adopt, but the 2002 should not be used. This is misleading saying it is "updated", since it is annotation the 2002 version! Sorry but I have to give it a 1 star to get peoples attention. If the author has a 2005/2008 edition, please buy that instead, or you might not be in code!
Electricians Pocket Manual.......2000-03-24
This book is typical of the Audels books in that it fairly concisely covers the important areas of the topic. It is a resource book that most people could use for several years before needing to go to another reference for technical aspects.

Customer Reviews:
Pat is a classic character.......2003-06-22
Julia Sweeney is a comical genious for giving us such a funny character. There is a guaranteed laugh on every page of this book. I LOVE how just when you're about to find out what Pat is, SOMETHING comes up to prevent it. The whole joke will never get old to me. I'm also a big fan of the movie about Pat. I love how Pat thinks it's attractive. Pat's so ugly! It's so hilarious, I love it! I only wish they'd make a movie called "It's Chris". Personally, I think Pat is the guy and Chris is the girl. Just because I see men wear the blue shirt and slacks, never women. And Chris is real feminine, with "it's" clothing. Perhaps I just spend way too much time thinking about it. Ha ha. Anyway, it's a great book!
Pat.......2002-04-05
It's Pat is a great book, and if you haven't read it, you should. I also suggest that you see the movie. You won't be able to breathe. It's Pat, it's funny, it's worth it.
P.S. I love cheese.

Accessible Intro To Harmony And Song Structure .......2006-04-12
This book, along with its companion by the same author, Songwriter's Workshop: Melody, comprise a solid, straightforward course in writing songs along the lines of what I'd (reluctantly) call "classic rock and pop" of the 60's through the 80's. The harmonic vocabulary covered in this volume is comparable to what most guitar-oriented songwriters
used then and continue to: open position chords with descending bass lines, major triads with thirds and fifths in the bass, etc. It may be a sign of the times at Berklee or, more
likely, just the author's orientation but you won't find jazz/show tune techniques here nor Steely Dan changes so if that's more your cup of joe, I'd recommend Jack Perricone's "Melody in Songwriting" which makes a great followup to this series.
But otherwise, there's little prior knowledge assumed (other than an interest in and listening experience to a wide range of songs) and much to be learned.
Kachulis's approach is to build up song structures by having you focus on individual elements: groove, chord color, modal chord progressions over small sections building to contrasts
over larger forms. Always refering to an example song or to the accompanying recording the approach is logical, and it should work for those requiring different levels of handholding and validation. You can imitate the examples closely or just
glean from the principles, going your own way.
And let's face it: Many of the points about song structure are just as applicable whether your composing German Lieder, folk ballads, cabaret torch songs or a neo-prog synth-drenched epic.
Cure Your Writer's Block.......2005-02-02
I was suffering from a severe case of writer's block before picking up "The Songwriter's Workshop: Harmony". I have picked up new techniques from modifing harmonies to learning popular chord progressions. The play-along CD has been instrumental in my development as a writer. I highly recommend this book if you are suffering from writer's block and want to learn great techniques to creating hit songs.

This book comes with a CD so you can practice your songs with accompaniment, even if you can't play an instrument.
Customer Reviews:
Effective for Beginning/Intermediate Writers.......2006-04-12
This book, along with its companion by the same author, Songwriter's Workshop: Harmony, comprise a solid, straightforward course in writing songs along the lines
of "classic rock and pop" from the 60's through the 80's, although the principles and techniques can be applied to virtually any genre of songwriting.
While this is not a book about writing lyrics per se (see Songwriting: Essential Guide to Lyric Form and Structure by Pat Pattison), Kachulis' exercises are designed to provide
tools for you to set your own words, use the provided fragments and phrases, and even "rewrite the hits" - take an existing song lyric you're familiar with and compose an entirely
new melody and/or chords for it.
The lessons are divided into several units that build upon one another and address a particular technical aspect of song melody: The first unit describes rhythmic placement of lyrics and the use of rhythmic devices to emphasize words and shape their expression. The following units introduce pitch and its relationship to the underlying harmony. Melodies are first derived from a single chord than over richer chord progressions and bass lines. Modal devices and the use of arpeggios to build
and expand ideas is explored. Along with this focus on the "micro" elements, later units demonstrate the larger sections and ultimately complete song forms.
The accompanying CD is well-produced and illustrates all of the exercises.
As with the companion book on Harmony, the vocabulary here is rock and guitar-oriented and you won't find many jazz/show tune techniques here nor Steely Dan-type changes (I'd recommend Jack Perricone's "Melody in Songwriting" which is a bit more along those lines and makes a great followup to this series.)
But otherwise, there's little prior knowledge assumed (other than an interest in and listening experience to a wide range of songs) and much to be learned.
Get the harmony book.......2006-03-06
I returned this book almost immediately after purchase. 90% of the info that is in this book is in "the songwriter's workshop: harmony" book where it is given a better presentation along with useful info on harmony. If you want some basic rules on how to write a good melody, look up the melody section in "Music, the Brain and Ecstasy" (no its not about drugs or sex), which gives you about 10 useful, non-restrictive tips for writing a good melody. Things like "non-diatonic notes should resolve by going to neighboring tones rather than by a leap".
a book of tricks.......2005-01-15
I've completed the first two chapters (of five) in this book and found that it is very useful. The examples of each technique are boring, bland, and not very creative, but I guess the author purposely made them that way so that the reader could understand the concept in the first place. There are so many techniques in the book to use only for only melody writing that no reader should be short of ideas after reading the book. It's an extremely detailed look at melody and all the aspects of creating a good melody.
Overall, it's a very useful book of tricks and techniques, but I think it would be better if the author gave better and more interesting examples of concepts. I don't think that the book alone will allow one to write good melodies anyway--I think anyone reading it should seek out melodies from his/her favorite songs (with notes on the treble clef and chord symbols) and analyze how they're put together and what techniques mentioned in the book are actually in that particular melody. A book is not meant to do this part (that's up to the reader), so I don't judge the book badly for this--a book can only do so much anyway.
bland.......2004-09-18
I found the examples of melody writing in this book to be boring. I didn't expect the writer to write "hit" melodies, but I think he could have done a better job than the bland melodies written for the book. I did find some information helpful like the scales listed in the back of the book and adding emphasis to certain keywords in lyrics.

Book Description
Roy Foster is one of the leaders of the iconoclastic generation of Irish historians. In this opinionated, entertaining book he examines how the Irish have written, understood, used, and misused their history over the past century. Foster argues that, over the centuries, Irish experience itself has been turned into story. He examines how and why the key moments of Ireland's past--the 1798 Rising, the Famine, the Celtic Revival, Easter 1916, the Troubles--have been worked into narratives, drawing on Ireland's powerful oral culture, on elements of myth, folklore, ghost stories and romance. The result of this constant reinterpretation is a shifting "Story of Ireland," complete with plot, drama, suspense, and revelation. Varied, surprising, and funny, the interlinked essays in The Irish Story examine the stories that people tell each other in Ireland and why. Foster provides an unsparing view of the way Irish history is manipulated for political ends and that Irish poverty and oppression is sentimentalized and packaged. He offers incisive readings of writers from Standish O'Grady to Trollope and Bowen; dissects the Irish government's commemoration of the 1798 uprising; and bitingly critiques the memoirs of Gerry Adams and Frank McCourt. Fittingly, as the acclaimed biographer of Yeats, Foster explores the poet's complex understanding of the Irish story--"the mystery play of devils and angels which we call our national history"--and warns of the dangers of turning Ireland into a historical theme park. The Irish Story will be hailed by some, attacked by others, but for all who care about Irish history and literature, it will be essential reading.
Customer Reviews:
Fact and fiction.......2003-10-12
Irish people of all persuasions and in all walks of life have developed a talent for building up a national history to their liking and drawing conclusions from it. Roy Foster's essays are about some of the ways in which Ireland's history has been interpreted, embroidered, exploited and packaged. I think everyone will agree there are cogent reasons for preserving the distinction between history and "national fiction". Ultimately, poor history makes poor propaganda, and propaganda in any case is a shabby use to put something as precious as a nation's history. This book is essential reading for people with an interest in Ireland. (I also recommend strongly the same author's earlier "Modern Ireland 1600-1972".)
Brilliant-Making Up Irish Tales of Past & Present.......2003-05-06
R. F. "Roy" Foster author of 'W. B. Yeats: The Apprentice Mage,' 'Charles Stewart Parnell: The Man and His Family' and 'Modern Ireland,' has written this experience and interpetation into Irish history and literature. He does a fine job of it. His bravery in massacring every sacred Irish cow as one would have fun reading it. It leaves you with a warm, passionate, giggly feeling. It's entertainingly brilliant look at the past and present Ireland. I particularly love the chapters and passages on Theme-parks & Histories (with some warning from Foster on expliotation); the chapters on Yeats; When the Newspapers Have Forgotten Me: Yeats, Obituarists and Irishness; Selling Irish Childhoods: Frank McCourt & Gerry Adams; and, Remembering 1798. They're totally smothered in clichés and lots of traditional tidbits of fond or fatal memories, known to some as the Irish experience.
Foster cleverly works moments of Ireland's past into narratives of Irish culture on myth, folklore, ghost stories and romance. The result is from a varied interpetation of opinionated and right down funny interlinking essays. In Theme-parks and Histories-Foster writes of the Irish are to remember or commemorate anything. It is worth remembering the upward curve of Irish cultural achievement-referring to W. B. Yeats, Hugh Leonard, Ezra Pound, Cashel Heritage Society and the 2,000-acre Famine Theme Park in Knockfierna Hill west of Limerick. Irish history, the most distinctive achievement for it. His suggestion to form a monument to Amnesia and forget where they put it. As a historian he would be shocked, but as an Irishman he would be attracted to the idea. Foster shows no mercy on his view of manipulating Irish history on political places and Irish poverty and oppression as a commerically packaged heritage park. His exploration of Yeats' authority of the Irish story's fitting moments as the voice of his Ireland countrymen.
Foster leaves teeth-marked criticism of Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) and Gerry Adams and their devil may care attittude of taking hostages for fortune. Transcending into the bestsellerdom of Irish childhoods. Simply a technique of marketing where Irish version brag and whimper about the woes of their early years' experience. I find this to be an entertaining reading. In some places a bit wordy, but good telling of Irish culture. You may hate or love it. But, if your interest is in Irish history and literature it's quite essential.
Excellent read for all who are serious about Irish history.......2003-02-20
This book ought to be on the shelf of anyone with an interest in Irish history. Foster has done an excellent job at making his points about the various 'uses' that history in Ireland has been employed for. From downright propaganda to 'memoirs' masquerading as vague truths he unleashes the power of clear thinking and valid sources. For so long Irish history has been treated as 'story' and this book attempts and succeeds in telling the difference. It is so refreshing to see something sensible in print! It is a great source book or reference and could also be read by delving into the different subjects in the index. I would recommend this for all who are involved in getting to know the real history of Ireland and the Irish and how some Irish 'history' came to be written in the first place.
THE MARKETING OF THE EMERALD ISLE-TONGUE-IN-CHEEK STYLE.......2002-12-29
Porter's tongue-in-cheek treatment of the marketing of Ireland is refreshing after an avalanche of Irish hype came from unscrupulous little publishers. The Disneynification of Ireland ,apparently propelled by American ad agencies for the Irish Tourist Board,is treated by Porter correctly as hype to snare innocent Irish-Americans.Porter gets almost every hilarious Irish twist of recent decades in this collection of exposes, including the hilarious, almost unbelievable marketing of the potato famine in Disney-like theme parks.Unfortunately, he closed his collection of revionist chapters without pointing to the biggest Irish hype of all -the invention and collapse of " The Celtic Tiger", based on runaway inflation and a Dublin stock market bubble that aped the rise and fall of America's Nasdaq.Foster's book is a must if you wish a clearer view of the Irish .

This book needs an urgent update........2004-01-30
I am writing this review in January 28, 2004 and I am compiling information sources for a research. I bought in Amazon this book because the reviews were fine, but when it arrived, I saw it was completely useless, since it has data updated to 1999 only! Too bad I wasted my money, I recommend both Amazon and Publishers to warn customers like me that this book is outdated by 5 years!!!! When this book was reviewed Pfizer didn't even knew Pharmacia's existence and Prozac was within the 5 top-sold products (!)
A review of the history of the Pharmaceutical Industry.......2000-06-19
The book gives a good introduction to the history of the pharmaceutical industry since the early nineteenth century. I, a chemist who is interested in the industry, found the book to be easy to read, full of interesting details, and very informative. The book points out some aspects that allow new drug development possible.

An Important and Practical Guide to Conservation in NYS.......2003-01-08
The Landowner's Guide to State-Protected Plants of Forests in New York State is a well put together little guide to some of the most important inhabitants of New York State, it's protected plants. The color photography is of good quality and the presentation is clear and concise. The descriptions of these important plants of New York state forests are easily read by non-biologists. At the same time the book provides the important information we regular, everyday natural historians need to know to do our part in appreciating and protecting these wonderful living things in and around our forests. Each plant is rated with an easy to use key on it's legal status in NYS as "endangered, threatened, or rare." There are also state and global ratings from the Natural Heritage Program, and clear direction on whom to contact should one be fortunate enough to actually find one of the truly rare species of plants. The only thing I wished for when reading this guide (besides wishing we didn't need a guide to endangered species) was that I could have learned some details about the non-vascular plants in NYS as well, like mosses, lichens, and fungi...but maybe that will be next.
As a landowner in NYS, a student, a hiker, and a painter of plants, I may be a little more excited than most about this little guide, still; I highly recommend it to anyone truly interested in learning more about some of our real state treasures which they may find in their own back yards. The book would make a great gift for any landowner in New York.
