        Book Description

Across Europe there is evidence, albeit unsystematic and patchy, of home ownership markets in which the experiences of some households has become problematic. The incidence of loan repayment difficulties, loan default and even forced sales combined with examples of falling prices and negative equity indicates a side to home ownership that is characterized by problems with social, economic and political dimensions. This book reports on research carried out in eight countries: Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK.

Examining the interplay of the housing markets in each country with their labor and financial markets and their systems of social security, it takes as its theoretical context the nature of globalization. It explores some of the ways in which there have been both similarities and differences in developments, supporting a view of globalization that provides some space for autonomous action by agents, including policy makers and households. The book was written as part of the Home Ownership - Social and Economic Problems Project (HOSE) that has been funded by the institutions of the researchers involved and the European Union under its Framework 5 Program.

              4 out of 5 stars Fretboard Roadmaps.......2007-04-16

This is a very useful book, well thought out, clearly illustrated. Very useful for those, such as myself, struggling to understand the instrument, and the logic and function of it's tuning, while stubbornly attempting to self-teach. I expect it would be useful to those with some knowlege and ability as well.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta' start somewhere.......2005-12-28

Okay... we've had good and bad reviews. I am approaching this from a music instructor (albeit a mandolin, guitar, bass "teacher") BUT also... one who teaches students MUSIC... not INSTRUMENT instructions.

              Here's what I think:

The book is okay; no it's good. The book provides some good basic advice, shows the reader a "course to pursue" but... doesn't teach it for you... THAT'S YOUR JOB. That's why it doesn't come with a nanny... the CD IS the instructor.

Practice... Rehearse.... Exercise.... Devote.... those are terms which YOU... the reader HAVE to employ in your DAILY routine.

Like bongos or Harmonica.... whatever. The text provides 90 percent of what you need. YOU have to provide the other 10 percent and MAKE IT WORK... GIT 'R DONE. It's really up to you.

              Wanna lesson...

              (1) check out Carl Culpeper's "Terrifying Techniques for Guitar" and employ the same system to mandolin.
              (2) Develop a list of tunes you can play... and
              (3) Expand that list
              (4) Change Keys for ever song. Know them all in 2, or 3 keys. Make one key a flatted key so piano and woodwinds will enjoy playing with you. Or visa versa.
              (5) Search out standards, ballads, classical (Bach is GREAT). And incorporate the masters into your learning. Not just the folk music or old time aspects of the instrument. ** The mandolin has a deep history with lots of classical influences.
              (6) Search out Violin music... same tuning and LOTS of it out there. There's plenty on line, use it to your advantage.
              (7) LEARN TO READ MUSIC. Tab has it's uses... but notation speaks the language.

              'nuff said. GIT 'R DONE

              Seriously? Seriously.

1 out of 5 stars Still Asking for Directions.......2005-08-26

I bought this based on the 'generally' positive reviews above, but have been basically disappointed. The premise of the book is to show 'essentials' of mandolin patterns from various styles, but the text and (particularly) the graphics are so obtuse as to almost be useless. Why reinvent the wheel? Just use basic musical notation and skip trying to come up with new graphics that are more confusing than helpful. As to the 'essentials', the book jumps from style to style, pattern to pattern without building much in the way of a clear logic or development.
All in all pretty disappointing. Find another way to get to Mandotown.

4 out of 5 stars Freting about Fretboard Roadmaps for the Mandolin.......2005-08-02

Overall - the book is pretty good. It has some neat licks in it and the CD is sorta helpful. Only "sorta" in that the idea is to teach a new song, scale, etc, but the speed of the recording is way faster than a beginner can play. It should have some slower versions of the songs available (like Jay Buckey does with his instruction manuals).

I do like the simple cords chart at the beginning of the book and I am using them already. I also like the simple fret board map with all the notes indicated. I used that to label the position of all the notes on my fretboard.

Try this - next time you are changing your strings, puch out some holes with a one hole punch in a sheet of self adhesive labels. Carefully stick the circle on your fret board and label the note (using the above mention fret board map) with a fine point sharpie. It really helps me to see the notes I am playing and eventually, I'll have them memorized.

3 out of 5 stars It's sad when the CD is the worse part of the package.......2003-10-01

I assume that since you're interested in this book that you've bought similar book/CD combinations to study with. As you know, the first track on all of these kinds of CD's is a set of notes to tune to. Now, on mandolin you're tuning a pair of strings which are set to the same note. Would you say that it's a bad thing if the first note you hear is not only out of tune, but the two strings are out of tune to each other? Yes, it is.

Throughout the CD the person playing the demonstrations flubs notes (they buzz, they're accidentally muted and so on) and his high E strings are quite often out of tune to each other. His low G strings don't so much ring as "plunk". Several times throughout the CD his instrument is out of tune to itself.

In the chapters on "chop" chords he lets his chords ring way to long. The CD examples are NOT chops, they're short duration chords. A chop should sound like "Chunk Chunk Chunk", not "Bling Bling Bling"

If I was to place the playing on this CD in a mandolin contest I'd say that it's solidly intermediate level playing, but certainly not advanced. Listen to Chris Thile to hear how clearly played notes should sound.

The only reason I give the book 3 stars is because the actual content is pretty good. There are many places to get this information, but this is a good reference to have a bunch of scale and arpeggio information in the same place. His two note chop positions are really usefull, he just doesn't play them as true chops on the CD.

So consider this book with a grain of salt. It's decent for a workout book, but it works best as a suppliment to a good teacher or to other books. I wouldn't take this book's CD as an example of the proper way to play.

                Book Description

Reading Sport begins with an insightful introduction by the editors that provides theoretical frameworks and analytical tools for reading sport. The selections that follow critically examine how the complexities and intersections of power are reflected in particular high-profile incidents and celebrity athletes. Included are such figures as Dennis Rodman, Nolan Ryan, Michael Jordan, Nancy Lopez, O.J. Simpson, Renee Richards, Nancy Kerrigan, and Tonya Harding.

Taken together, the essays demonstrate that sports events and personalities exist within broader cultural, economic, historical, and political realms. The work makes a valuable and timely contribution to the emerging field of sport study and sets the stage for further discussions of power and representation.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for begginers.......2006-05-23

Some people may find this book a bit difficult because of its style. The way this book works (besides for explaining the concepts very well,) is it teaches you how to do something and after taking you through it a few times, the author will tell you to do something based on what you just learned and you will have to do it on your own. So you really end up with first hand experience.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2006-01-25

I come from the computers/engineering field into 3D computer graphics. This was the first book that I read. The book delivers what it promises - it is a good first step for 3D newcomers. It is easy to follow - exercises are explained step-to-step wise and it covers the most basic features of Maya. The book prepares you well for the Alias-book Maya Foundations, which gives you enough background to start making small animated films.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Maya beginers.......2005-11-23

After reading the reviews of this book I was a little apprehensive but my fears proved baseless.
I can confidently say that this book has enabled me to graduate to an intermediate level Maya user.
The trick is to actually read the entire book in sequence and not just jump straight into the tutorials. I found the language used to be straight forward and easy to understand.

If you are new to Maya, or 3D visualisation, then I would highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars A decent but difficult book.......2005-10-07

This book is an introduction to the 3D software Maya. The format was split between general discussion and step-by-step exercises. There is also a CD that included the exercise files and a copy of Maya Personal Learning Edition (PLE).

First of all, I did find the step-by-step exercises to be quite frustrating. The steps could have benefited from more detail or even a few more images. I just found myself getting lost to easily. Sometimes experimentation or trial and error were the only ways to get through a particular step. I did spot a few errors - most related to entering values. Sometimes depending on the view (or perspective) the required values would be different. As a beginner, minor errors made things even more difficult then they already were. Surprisingly, the book's use of grayscale images didn't create any problems except on a few occasions. Ultimately, it took me a lot longer to finish the exercises and the book than I would have wanted.

One of the reasons I got this book is that it included a copy of Maya PLE. But, the included version is only 5.0. Which is strange since the book is supposed to be an introduction to Maya 6. I couldn't get it to install anyways so I ended up just buying Maya PLE 6.0 from Alias.

With the problems aside you will still learn plenty just by reading through the material. I found the general discussion to be excellent. There was plenty of good information about the animation production process and great insight about each topic. I was surprised to find out that one of my favorite animated comedies was created with Maya.

Maya is a large and complicated program. The frustrating exercises just complicated things further. Especially since this is supposed to be an introduction to the topic. The exercises just needed to be a little clearer or more specific at times. The book may have been intended to be used with a formal class. In the end, and not without some struggles, I was still fairly introduced to Maya and 3D.

1 out of 5 stars NOT FOR BEGGINERS.......2005-09-20

This book is a big waste of time and money just like many other Maya books. I have bought and read over 5 Maya books geared towards begginers and none of them including this one is helpful. They have many great tutorials, but all the directions are very hard to understand because they leave alot of missing information out. Its like they expect you to really know the software in and out to study their beginner books series.

My advice for begginners is to use a less demanding program. Many people who use Maya are pros and thats not to say you won't be either. But unless you go to school, these books in my opionion are worthless. Even though the tutorials are made by people who have big names in the CGI industry, doesn't mean they have the teaching skills to get us small people going.

I recommend Lightwave, because the book, Inside Lightwave 8 taught me in a breeze how to ge up and running fast-

                            Book Description

"Religious Ideology and Cultural Fantasy draws on Arthur Marotti's extraordinary command of both manuscript and printed sources to examine what early modern English Catholics said of themselves and what their legion of enemies said about them. Subtly argued, richly documented, and attractively written, this path-breaking book has much to tell us about the often violent construction of England's fiercely Protestant national identity and the lives of those who stood in its way. A remarkable accomplishment." —Richard Helgerson, author of Adulterous Alliances: Home, State, and History in Early Modern European Drama and Painting

"Combining insights from literary theory and revisionist history, Marotti's Religious Ideology and Cultural Fantasy is a major reevaluation of the religious literature of early modern England. In clear, precise prose, and with impressive scholarship, it skillfully reveals the larger narrative that has dominated our understanding of the literary expression of spirituality: tacit assent to the Reformed claim to a progressive view of a national history that casts Catholicism as regressive and authoritarian. Marotti reverses this judgment and uncovers an alternative trans-national narrative whose importance goes far beyond the religious texts he so deftly analyzes. Religious Ideology and Cultural Fantasy is necessary reading for anyone interested in how literature harnesses religion and politics to shape or resist national identity in Reformation England, but it also does much to explain the political dimension of contemporary religious discourse in Europe and America. Marotti's book is more timely than ever." —Martin Elsky, The Graduate Center, City University of New York

"A gripping narrative and a must read for anyone interested in the fears and fantasies inspired by Catholics in post-Reformation England." —James Shapiro, Columbia University, author of Shakespeare and the Jews

In this new book, Arthur F. Marotti analyzes some of the rhetorical and imaginative means by which the Catholic minority and the Protestant majority defined themselves and their religious and political antagonists in early modern England. Marotti focuses on the period between the arrival of the first Jesuit missionaries in England in 1580 and the climax of ongoing religious conflict in the Restoration-era "Popish Plot" and the 1688 "Glorious Revolution." He covers such issues as the relationship of print culture to the residual Catholic culture in Elizabethan England; recusant women, Jesuits, and the cultural "othering" of Catholics; martyrdom accounts; polemically charged Catholic and Protestant narratives of conversion; and the depiction of Catholic plots or outrages and providential Protestant deliverances.

                                  Book Description

Introducing a comprehensive book and CD-ROM for visualizing and computing special functions

Here is an invaluable reference and learning guide to more than 150 special functions of applied mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering. The Atlas contains over 700 graphics of the functions, which readers can also create by using the annotated Mathematica files provided. It offers complete, consistent instructions and test values for computing the functions accurately and efficiently with the full ANSI C source programs on the CD-ROM, which is both Windows and Macintosh compatible.

3 out of 5 stars No substitute for Handbook of Mathematical Functions.......2000-09-07

According to the author, the practicality of books on functions is often limited by the graphical content, and that books of tables like Abrahamowitz & Stegun "serve a very limited purpose" today (primarily to check function evaluating software). This "Atlas" tries to fill this void, and it does a respectable job. However, detailed function exploration and visualization is left to Mathematica users, the primary audience for this book. Without Mathematica 2.2 or later, and/or a C complier, a great deal in this title cannot be fully appreciated. Of course, the reader can often explore function behavior by plotting an equation using common spreadsheet software that came with his computer w/o using C or Mathematica. But much of this high-priced textbook consists of small blocks of C code and everlasting references to Mathematica notebook calls. Part II contains ~200 pages of Mathematica notebook descriptions and ~100 pages of C driver programs, not to mention the C code documented throughout the first 600 pages.

Most the "Atlas" graphics are small (~2") gray-scale screenshots of Mathematica plots. The quality of some graphics leaves something to be desired though (Figure 7.2.2 p. 119 for example), since many figures are obviously grainy (vertical lines and text characters often appear as broken line segments, not unlike a tilted faxed image). These gray-scale images are fairly bland - I expected at least a little color and only the highest quality graphics for a book calling itself an "atlas", especially for the asking price.

"Atlas" is no substitute for the timeless books of tables and equations such as the (inexpensive) A&S (ISBN 0486612724) or the CRC Standard Math Tables. In computing the error function (erf), for example, Dr. Thompson defines erf in terms of a function call of the gamma function, while A&S provides many, many more alternatives suitable for machine solution. The discussions here, while more generous than A&S, are much less detailed than an explanatory book like Numerical Recipes. Instead, pictorial surveys primarily forego a lot of the detailed explanation of the underlying function theory. A few of the functions, such as the Voight distribution, are hard to find in the classic references, but the reader will find very few new topics here.

I expect this title, being heavily tied to a particular software package and computer language, will find itself being re-issued in later editions as software inevitably evolves. I therefore wouldn't expect too many individuals paying $175 for what is almost a software book. All in all, a well packaged presentation but not quite the insightful, general purpose book for which I had hoped.
