Book Description

Identify exciting job opportunities in the newly emerging nations of the former Soviet Union.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A job guide to a changing world.......2000-12-02

Jobs in Russia and the NIS is a pioneer book which opens many doors. The book is an excellent source if you are interested in work involving the former Soviet Union or living there. This is a one of a kind book.

Though there are many books being published about getting jobs abroad, this is the only book which is Russia and NIS specific. All types of organizations are listed such as US government, non-profit, volunteer and private.

Ms. Forbes has also included a much needed section with the addresses of embassies in the United States, time differences between the US and each republic and other useful information which is important when traveling or looking to reside in the former Soviet Union.

There is even a short history at the beginning of the book to get the reader acquainted with the region if s/he is not already.

The one major drawback of the book is the date of publication. Russia and the NIS are literally changing daily so that the information in the book may very well be outdated, e.g. visa requirements. Even the US listings after further research have several errors like addresses changes and mergers.

What would make this book even better is a much needed update including the world wide web addresses and telephone numbers.

Despite any negatives, the book is an outstanding source. Trying to find out information about companies and organizations operating in the former Soviet Union is not easy, and that makes this book a gem. Jobs in Russia and the NIS gives the researcher a concrete place to begin. It may not be the end all, but it is a GREAT place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Who does what and why?.......2000-08-17

In this book Andrew Sayer and Richard Walker takes a fresh and critical look on the claims of a new economy and working life in contemporary society by returning to, and modifying, one of the classical concepts of social science: The division of Labour. The book contains a thorough discussion on what is actually meant with the concept division of labour, and why it is more suitable than other structural phenomenons to explain changes in working life. Apart from this, the authors discuss such topics as if we are really moving into a 'service economy' and the problems of defining what is a service and what is not. Andrew Sayer's style of writing, a critical analysis of the basic assumptions underlying commonly used concepts and arguments in social science (no doubt a herritage from his realist approach), is recognizable from his earlier writings on method (Method in Social Science-A realist Approach, Routledge). Even if you do not agree with everything Sayer and Walker writes, and the conclusions they draw from it, the book no doubt forces you to revaluate your thoughts about working life and the assumptions they lead to. And I guess that is more than you can say about most books these days...

5 out of 5 stars Great For Flutists.......2007-09-29

This book is informative, interesting and a great aid for a beginner, and perhaps for more advanced players, as well. It is full of very nteresting historical information and illustrations for wooden and bamboo flutes.
As I am a rank beginner, I can only speak from that frame of reference. But I definitely think you should give it a try, if you are interested in playing the flute.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book when I was playing in school.......2007-09-10

This is the kind of book that should be required in band classes. It was nice to see some of the things you could do to repair the instrument, how to select an instrument, different types of flutes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for the beginner.......2007-08-13

This guide to flute history, mechanics and playing technique is an excellent source for the beginner. It is written using understandable concepts that make it possible to visualize what is being taught. If you have not yet begun taking formal lessons with a teacher, this book will give you a good start.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction.......2007-06-27

I knew nothing about the flute when I bought this book. I was pleased to not only learn a lot about the history and variety of flutes, but also to successfully purchase, assemble and begin to play a flute based on the author's clear and competent guidance. When I found a flute teacher, she was also impressed with the range of information the book presents, and added it to her recommended list. I am less than halfway through the book, so I can't comment on the more advanced sections, except to say that they appear to cover all aspects of music theory.

          4 out of 5 stars Happy Flautist.......2007-03-31

What a great book. Well laid out, clearly stated and very practical. I look forward to following it in the path to improving my enjoyment of flute playing.Thank you Mark

While the first GUM was packaged much like a dime-store pack of baseball cards, this new issue is much more inventive. This time it has a built-in gumball dispenser! Rather than being a concept/MFA design final peice, each issue of GUM is a little nucleus of fully formed and realized ideas (at least to me.) The artists and editors have put together a great collection of design ideas, prose, comic art, inspiration and even a View Master disc by Rudy Vander Lans (EMIGRE). GUM delivers an unbelievable amount of booty for the cover price, and this issue (#2) is no different.

There are plenty of 'arty' design table books, that sit like tenured professors on my shelves, but GUM is just a whole lot more fun to read, enjoy, and simply have around.

What I find the most vexing, though, is the dilemma as to where to shelve it at home. It's so interactive, that I hate to just shelve it as a 'collectible'. Nor would I say it's a designer's coffee table book. There's an ironic vibe about the disposable nature of the product, but you just can't throw any bits away! Maybe if I had a desk, I'd have this out all the time. As it is, it just bugs me in a good way.

And I think the creators would be chuckling about it, too.

3 out of 5 stars Not as gum as it seems..........2005-09-19

Fun consept-book with an interesting style. I'm afraid it's not a "must have" for a designer. Looks like a book/package it was fun to make more than anything else. But, hey it was 16 $. :-)

You've had a go at some of the current range of Sudoku books and magazines and done the daily Sudoku grids in the newspapers. Easy, gentle, moderate and even hard grids have been solved without a single doodle on the page. Only difficult, fiendish, diabolical and evil grids give real pleasure, all the rest are completed more out of habit rather than as a challenge. This book is the answer to your prayers, 132 of the toughest Sudoku grids around, that will challenge even the keenest of players. All grids have a unique solution and are supplied in a large format, as marking-up (with either subscript numbers or dots) will be required to achieve success. The grids are tough (equivalent to any fiendish, diabolical or evil grids found elsewhere) but are not so ridiculously difficult as to put people off - they are tough but fair. Prepare for the mental challenge that is Sudoku-GUI Retribution .

This book is not a treatment of the theory of design patterns. We show design patterns applied in real-world architectural scenarios so that you can see them in action and see the benefits that they bring. It explains why it's worth spending time building design patterns into your applications, even though this may seem at odds with Rapid Application Development.

After a fast-paced introduction to design patterns, the core of this book consists of three case studies, which show how design patterns are applied in each of the main tiers of an application: the data, business, and presentation layers. These case studies flesh out the reader's understanding of design patterns, and show how they can be employed in real scenarios that will be instantly recognizable to all VB .NET programmers. The book also shows how design patterns can be used in conjunction with .NET Remoting, so that they can be applied not just within individual tiers, but across them as well. Since many VB .NET programmers may not be completely familiar with UML, we also provide a UML primer as an appendix.

              5 out of 5 stars good start.......2007-07-12

I had a little experience with Des.Pat and this book helped me to speed up my knowledge. I encourage people to start DP with this book. This is less theory and a lot of practice. Which is very good. I have seen other books but they are a lot of theory less implementation and they are talking very very academic. So it's hard to understand. But this book brings you up to academic knowledge by given simple examples.

4 out of 5 stars Doing Objects in VB - I wish more authors would write like this.......2007-05-12

If you want to get up to speed quickly on OOP practices this is an excellent starting point. I wish more authors would write books like this, both writing style and material. Deborah has an easy to read style that makes the material she covers easy to comprehend.

The book walks the reader through a small and simple project. The downloaded code sample works and the build along instructions are accurate; and if followed will produce the same code as the downloaded version. There were a few time where I got to a point that I thought something was overlooked or wrong; and in each case when I turned the page or read the next 2-3 pages all was explained; this too helped me feel I was getting a good grasp of the material being presented.

So, with all this praise, why did I only give the book 4 stars? In my opinion there should have been another two - three chapters to really complete the material. What is in the book is how to use objects and bind them to Win forms, how to build a three-tier project and how to use the bound forms to edit records. What's missing is the Add & Delete functionality. Using bound objects with the DataGridView you lose the native ability of the grid to do column sorts since the objects being bound to do not implement iSortable (this is mentioned in the book but it would have been nice to have included). There was a nice use of Nullable(of Date) but this too would have been nice to expand (SQL allows for a null date but .NET doesn't allow Date types to be null, this creates some problems that the nullable(of Date) doesn't really overcome.

So, a Great book I highly recommend. It does a great job with the material it does cover; and you get a reusable development framework in the process, I just wish there were a few more chapters to really complete the material covered.

5 out of 5 stars good book but some examples are hard to understand........2006-03-15

If you know design patterns well, you make different accross developers! This book is describing each design pattern with an example. Sometimes it is difficult to get everything through one example but I'd recommend this book to everyone. I am good at vb.net so application of design patterns in vb.net is a big plus for me.

I felt the book was too hard to understand mostly because I was still very new to .Net in general. Well, after spending a few months working on a real life project, I got the suspension that our architecture could lead to problems in the future. So I started researching design patterns and asking other people on message boards how they approach design. After all of that, I decided to review this book again and I was amazed at how much of the information was sinking in my brain this time of around. I especially love the section on applying design patterns to the data access tier. I still have more to re-read, but that is my favorite section so far. This is a great book for design pattern newbies like myself. The approaches in this book can also work in C# although some minor syntax changes would have to be made. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source of information.......2000-04-06

I enjoyed the well researched informative facts provided by the author. Mr. Chemerka has not tried to provide an in depth analysis of the fictional and non-fictional accounts although he does take editorial license here and there. Nonetheless, it is valuable to any Alamo researcher.

                4 out of 5 stars ALAMO ALMANAC........1999-07-25

When an author combines research findings with the aggregate information and knowledge born of his or her background, experience, environment, upbringing and training, the fortunate result can be a book like this one. It's content is a near-ideal melding of an author's acquired professional skills and his evident personal predilections. To paraphrase Aaron Copland, the dean of American composers, "If it's in the writing, it's in the man." As we're often defined (or even judged) by our choice of friends, we're often best represented by the results of our own work.

David Crockett was a frontiersman and adventurer (and a hunter, farmer, businessman, veteran of the Creek Indian War, town commissioner, militia colonel and Tennessee state legislator), who served for a time as a United States congressman. He was not a congressman who spent time as a frontiersman and adventurer. The very existence of this book exemplifies the principle of priority, a concept from which many of us could learn. The author of this work has evidently set a goal, which he's clearly met, of producing a book that can be read and enjoyed by the reader, not merely examined and studied by the scholar (though even they should surely benefit from it). The author, an educator, discusses matters that would be of interest to virtually anyone with even an indirect interest in Western history.

It seems the book's intent is for expanse and diversity rather than depth. This is not a negative judgement but a positive observation: there's no other book quite like it so its singularity makes it quite special. Seek not here thy standard detailed biographies - thou shalt not find them. There are countless tomes about Western history generally, Texas history specifically, and the Alamo in particular with its countless sub-species (biographies of Bowie, Crockett, Travis, volumes about the collective defenders, their descendants, etc). This book provides something rather unique, which adds to its value: a compendium of fascinating details that would be difficult, if not altogether impossible, to find in any other single volume. It can, indeed, be a blessing to the researcher and surely a delight to the reader.

Of particular interest is the Alamo Chronology, offering a virtually year-by-year account of the location and its events, and presenting a veritable Alamo timetable in microcosm. The Alamo from A to Z, the book's longest section, offers data too abundant even to summarize here, and defies description. Suffice it to say it's a virtual treasury of information, facts, tidbits and fascinating details, allowing us to vicariously do our own excavations on the Alamo grounds. The section titled Alamo Lists includes (but isn't limited to) rosters of the defenders, the survivors, the couriers, the best Alamo books, and even the best actors in Alamo films. Operatively, the book covers the Alamo in all its incarnations - from the historical and iconic entity to its popular cultural image.

The book contains both photos and well-executed illustrations by various people. One warranting mention is the superb rendering by California artist, blade collector and Bowie historian Joseph Musso, picturing the three most prominent Alamo defenders: Crockett, Bowie and Travis. Outstanding and fascinating maps of the actual assaults are provided by artist Rod Timanus.

Perhaps the most compelling illustration, however, is the reproduction of an 1849 Daguerreotype. It's compelling because it offers us a literal glimpse into the past: it's the only known photographic image of the Alamo showing the chapel as it looked (if not literally, then surely effectively) at the time of the siege - that is, BEFORE its distinctive hump was added to the upper façade by the U.S.Army in 1850. It seems more than just coincidence that the Alamo is the subject of this, the earliest datable photographic image taken in Texas and a mere 13 years from glory. By its very immediacy, the appearance of this picture in William Chemerka's book seems to enlarge and strengthen the links in the chain that binds us to our own history.

One can easily foresee the entirely predictable objections and ludicrous reactions the book will prompt from some quarters. We can safely anticipate the claim by some academics that it's not source material for scholars. Well, maybe this book isn't SUPPOSED to be. - - We must recognize that some people are hard of reading, being unable (or worse, unwilling) to gauge a finished, integral work by its own intrinsic value, and to understand and appreciate it for what it is. They prefer instead to view it tangentially, and to focus on what it is not. Alas this postural view is often taken in academe and is popularly known as a cop-out.

If this book isn't a be-all and end-all of Alamo history and won't be everything to everyone, it's because it isn't its purpose. It's not for those who get annoyed because goldfish aren't trained to do tricks or because dogs don't live in fish tanks. Those who can gauge something on its own merits are the exceptions, not the rule - but they're the gems in the settings of an author's readership. Those who would benefit most by this volume and would respond most positively to it are those with the prudence and integrity to form their own opinions and draw their own conclusions. This principle brings to mind a relevant remark, made by Beethoven: when asked by the violinist Radicati about "the meaning" of the composer's late string quartets (virtually avant-garde music in his day), Beethoven replied in the most matter-of-fact manner and without a trace of conceit, "Oh, those are not for you, but for a later age."

Those academics who might not consider the contents of this book "source material for scholars" would be revealing more about themselves than about the book. For readers, it's superb material and is, in a phrase, highly recommended as an invaluable "at your fingertips" tool - for anyone - both as a reference work and as very enjoyable, even fascinating and, perhaps more importantly, enlightening reading.

                Book Description

This captivating story of the Jewish community in Johnstown, Pennsylvania reveals a pattern of adaptation to American life surprisingly different from that followed by Jewish immigrants to metropolitan areas. Although four-fifths of Jewish immigrants did settle in major cities, another fifth created small-town communities like the one described here by Ewa Morawska. Rather than climbing up the mainstream education and occupational success ladder, the Jewish Johnstowners created in the local economy a tightly knit ethnic entrepreneurial niche and pursued within it their main life goals: achieving a satisfactory standard of living against the recurrent slumps in local mills and coal mines and enjoying the company of their fellow congregants. Rather than secularizing and diversifying their communal life, as did Jewish immigrants to larger cities, they devoted their energies to creating and maintaining an inclusive, multipurpose religious congregation.

Morawska begins with an extensive examination of Jewish life in the Eastern European regions from which most of Johnstown's immigrants came, tracing features of culture and social relations that they brought with them to America. After detailing the process by which migration from Eastern Europe occurred, Morawska takes up the social organization of Johnstown, the place of Jews in that social order, the transformation of Jewish social life in the city, and relations between Jews and non-Jews. The resulting work will appeal simultaneously to students of American history, of American social life, of immigration, and of Jewish experience, as well as to the general reader interested in any of these topics.

Dr. Morawska is a brilliant scholar. Her prose is lucid and well-formed. Her 10 years of interviewing at Johnstown, PA and her wealth of knowledge about the Jewish diaspora produced this monuemental work. The book reads quickly even for someone with little or no background knowledge of Jewish Americans. And I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Morawska's book. She is a great teacher and writer.

5 out of 5 stars Really well-written book about ridiculous feuds..........2005-04-15

Men. I can say that, because all of these feuds involved men, except for one concerning Rosalind Franklin and the DNA fiasco...with one of my least favorite scientists, Watson.
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of ego that gets involved in scientific and medical discoveries. It's humongous! Fights concerning rights of discoveries or inventions, fights concerning doing the right thing for the patient (rather than the doctor), etc. have existed since the beginning of time and are continuing today. The very last section of the book had to do with the discovery of the AIDS virus by Gallo (American) and Montagnier (French).

Some of the earlier feuds had to do with the discovery of how the body really works through doing dissections of both animals and human cadavers. This was frowned upon by the Church, which basically ran society during the middle ages and into the Renaissance, but some brave men like Harvey and Di Vinci went ahead and did what needed to be done. So when they actually published their findings, all hell often broke lose. This often put these physicians and scientists at risk for life, but their refusal to rely on ancient theories from Galen is what paved the way for modern medicine.

I enjoyed the way Hellman writes. He's a little bit of of a cynic and smart aleck, just my type...since I'm that way myself. The information is concise and interesting. I knew about some of the fights from previous medical histories, but Hellman often gave information that wasn't available in these books. The story concerning Semmelweis who discovered the real reasons behind women dying in childbirth from pueperal fever (exhange of germs from cadavers to women in labor by doctors not cleaning up prior to touching those women) is probably one of the saddest stories I have ever read, especially since he ended up being brutalized in an insane asylum, and it killed him at an early age.

This should be on a list of required readings for medical and research students. Perhaps if more of them realized how ridiculous these spats are, especially if they involve ego and money (which is a current huge problem thanks to the pharmaceutical companies and kickbacks to physicians), they would learn to allow ethics to govern more of their behavior.

People who enjoy medical history, and teachers can use this book to interest students in medicine and research, because these are areas of a good percent of the jobs today.

What a delightful page-turner this book turned out to be. I needed information, fast, and this sounded like a good buy. It sure was. The author makes very complex ideas and medical procedures understandable for lay people, but doesn't sacrifice the seriousness of his subject. His wry wit does not demean the eminent and not-so-eminent figures he writes about but, rather, brings them back to life. In fact, the author himself seems to be sitting in the room with you, relaxed and talking about some people you both know.

                5 out of 5 stars Engaging overview.......2001-03-01

A sprightly romp through three hundred years of medical history, focusing on ten major contretemps. Entertaining and educational, it's also a cautionary tale for would-be medical researchers: many of the "heroes" of these tales (Semmelweis, Bernard, Franklin) meet extremely unkind fates. If you enjoyed Hellman's previous outing on feuds in science, you'll find here more of the same.

                  Book Description

Alm provides a descriptive analysis of the science-policy linkage that defined the policy debate over acid rain in the United States. He focuses on the role that science and scientists played in both defining the acid rain problem as one worthy of policy consideration and in framing the acid rain issue in a way that would prompt action to reduce pollution levels. A major concern of Alm's study are the problems scientists have in connecting to the policy side of environmental debates. He provides in-depth exchanges from the floor of Congress between scientists and policy makers as they debated the merits of reducing acid rain pollution. These exchanges provide special insight into the difficulty that scientists have in communicating the findings of their research to policy makers and the public. In addition, he uses in-depth interviews with the acid-rain scientists themselves to delineate the way they perceive how science is and ought to be linked to the policy world. Finally, Alm looks at the different perspectives offered by United States scientists versus Canadian scientists and natural scientists versus social scientists, and he examines the importance and implications of these differences to the future of environmental policy making in the United States.
