      5 out of 5 stars good introduction........2000-12-28

      This is an extremely usefull 90 pages palm-sized booklet. It is organized in 11 chapters. The authors will explain step by step with real life examples, how to develop your project, study and write for a grant, prepare a rview or original paper with an appendix from the uniform requiremnts for manscripts. Also he will guide you how to make outstanding slides, posters, lectures. Finally the chapter on CV, despite being few pages, but emphasizes very important ideas. This booklet is reach with great commentarry about why it should be this way not that. I found that the important ideas are in BOLD make them very handy. I felt that it offers a good introduction to those aspects not taught in medical school.

        Book Description

        Social marginalisation due to changing labour markets in a global, knowledge-intensive economy poses a major challenge to European welfare states. Addressing the problem from a citizenship perspective, this book contributes significantly to the understanding of policy problems and the development of appropriate strategies.

        Changing labour markets, welfare policies and citizenship readdresses the question of how full citizenship may be preserved and developed in the face of enduring labour market pressures. It:

        clarifies the relationship between changing labour markets, welfare policies and citizenship;

        discusses possible ways in which the spill-over effect from labour market marginality to loss of citizenship can be prevented;

        specifies this problem in relation to the young, older people, men and women and immigrants;

        offers theoretical and conceptual definitions of citizenship as a new, alternative approach to empirical analyses of labour market marginalisation and its consequences;

        highlights the lessons to be learned from differing approaches in European countries.

        This book provides important new insights for academics and students in comparative social policy, sociology and political science. It will also be of great value to policy makers in the field of social and labour market policy.

                The Ear Training curriculum of Berklee College of Music is known and respected throughout the world. Now, for the first time, this unique method has been captured in one comprehensive book by the chair of the Ear Training Department. This method teaches musicians to hear the music they are seeing, notate the music they have composed or arranged, develop their music vocabulary, and understand the music they are hearing. The book features a complete course with text and musical examples, and studies in rhythm, sight recognition, sol-fa, and melody.

                4 out of 5 stars Berklee Press essential ear training.......2007-06-27

                My son attends Berklee and he tells me that this is not the book used at the school. He also said that the material covered in the book is more advanced than what is taught the first year and that ear training is one of the most difficult areas for most students. I understand that Berklee Press has now come out with a Basic Ear Training book. This book should be retitled Advanced Ear Training, or at least book two.

                5 out of 5 stars The only Ear Training book you need!.......2007-01-04

                This is the ultimate ear training method. All of the exercises are geared toward developing your inner ear in a practical and useful manner. I was a student of Steve's at Berklee and going through this book is like going through his class again. Great teacher and a great text.

                5 out of 5 stars Moveable Do.......2005-05-13

                The Moveable Do taught at Berklee and explained in this book is a great resourceful tool. You don't need to have absolutely pitch to hear the notes right. The book explains that the Moveable do technique helps develop recognition of notes no matter what key. It also brings great exercises to practice your ability to read in all keys. It reinforces the need to solfege in order to listen well. The rhythmic exercises cover the different time signature and common rhythmic phrases used in today's music. This great book helps you develop yourself to be a solid musician.

                I have found that after reading "Essential Ear Training" I have been able to greatly improve my ability to hear what I see on paper. I never realized how much I was lacking until I read this book. This is a complete book with focuses on both rhythms and melodies.

                  Book Description

                  With over 40 professionally designed templates, multiple page designs, dozens of fonts, and stunning tables and charts, Pages—Apple's new word processor—makes it easy to create polished documents with a minimum of fuss. Part word processor, part layout program, it lets you place alignment guides to help you position text and graphics precisely on the page while text flows around any kind of graphic, no matter where you put it. (Try doing that with Microsoft Word!) Students can use Pages to create school reports; parents can use it to send out birth announcements; anyone can use it to create an advertising mailer, church newsletter, party invitation, or just a plain old letter.

                  Here to help is this small, smart, streamlined guide designed to take readers from standing start to stellar finish, no matter what project they're tackling. Rather than cover every last option Pages offers, this book steps readers through several sample Pages projects, showing them the quickest, most effective way to communicate their ideas. Each short lesson builds a component of a basic Pages document, from choosing a template, deciding on a layout, formatting charts and tables, incorporating graphics and color, and adding a bit of polish to a final document. Friendly, step-by-step instructions and large, full-color screen shots make the information instantly accessible.

                  Pages was great when originaly itroduced. Now, in version 2.0, it has exceeded its own expectations to provide excellence wel beyond the ordinary. This edition of "Creating Pages with iWork: Visual QuickProject Guide"
                  by David Morris, will provide you with the best any "how to" guide could offer. If you love Macs, if you appreciate Pages, you will be blown away wih the quaity of not only Pages 2.0, but also the manner in which the information is presented in Moriss' "Creating Pages with iWork: Visual QuickProject Guide."

                  5 out of 5 stars A nice practical introduction to Pages.......2007-04-08

                  The author has chosen a good range of projects for this work. They closely match the projects we're involved with in our local Parents and Citizens group to help out at our daughter's school. Very convenient.

                  The presentation allows for either staged progress through the content or more random access to concepts as you need them.

                  It's short enough to be digestible but contains most of what you need in Pages, short of AppleScript and other more advanced topics.

                  If you're relatively new to Pages and would like a good way in this book is probably for you. If you are a more advanced Pages user or have a lot of word processing experience in general you would probably benefit more from a more advanced treatment.

                  This book does what it sets out to do very well.

                  Wow, what a bargain! Here's what's so GREAT about this book:

                  1) The chapters are clearly organized and thought out. Each chapter provides you with a quick, fun, creative project in which you painlessly learn about many of Pages' key program fundamentals.

                  2) The book provides its instructions in a clear, visual, step-by-step manner that makes learning VERY EASY, yet effective!

                  3) This author loves to use full-color illustrations, which makes following the author's instructions a real snap.

                  4) More than a simple word processor -- this author teaches you how to create NEAT projects that look great. You will learn how to create professional-looking projects in this book.

                  5) Doesn't waste your time. I completed this book within a couple of days and was able to immediately start publishing all kinds of neat publications afterwards.

                  My summary -- BUY THIS BOOK!! You won't regret it. Wow, what a bargain!

                                    They travel endlessly and seem to appear almost everywhere, yet they are the world's most mysterious people: Gypsies. Isabel Fonseca has done the impossible, entering into their world, living and traveling with Gypsies during several long trips to Eastern Europe, and she has brought back an insightful, highly personal, and very readable account of who the Gypsies are and how they live. The Gypsies have a legendary aversion to "gadje," or outsiders, but Fonseca has lifted the curtain and written gracefully about their lives on the edge of society.

                                    Book Description

                                    Isabel Fonseca describes the four years she spent with Gypsies from Albania to Poland, listening to their stories, deciphering their taboos, and befriending their matriarchs, activists, and child prostitutes. A masterful work of personal reportage, this volume is also a vibrant portrait of a mysterious people and an essential document of a disappearing culture. 50 photos.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Bravo! .......2007-08-16

                                    This book came highly recommended to me. Any book that aims at humanizing and demystifying the Roma people is a step in the right direction. I am a "white" American woman who has lived among the poorest of Gypsy people in the mountains of Romania. I can tell you from experience, these are a strong people, who have endured (and continue to endure) unimaginable hardships and prejudices. Many are unfairly shunned by society and go unrecognized by local governments. They are shoved to the side and forgotten. This book, "Bury Me Standing" is one of those books that everyone should read. You will be amazed at what you didn't know. You will be angry/sad/speechless as a result of what you find out. Read this book and then share it with others. It's a history that needs to be heard.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Gypsy Road.......2007-05-12

                                    Isabel Fonseca has written a cleared-eyed, well documented account of gyspies, focusing on those she visited in Eastern Europe. It is a higly readable, provocative narrative about a population ignored and abused, but with a defined culture that continues to survive at the edge of the modern world.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Journeys with lonely souls- a letter to the author.......2007-01-25

                                    Dear Ms. Fonseca,
                                    Ever since meeting a small group of real Gypsies in New Jersey, USA (they were visiting my church), I have found them interesting. When your book came out (Bury Me Standing) I did not have the time then to read it. That was a while ago, I admit (shame on me), but now that I am half of the way through your book. (Tah dah!) I have some observations and one or two questions!
                                    My `personal' gypsies came to my church, which at the time was kind of unconventional- maybe as unconventional for Christians as Gypsies are for people....maybe that's why they came. We were meeting at a rented banquet room in a Holiday Inn in Paramus, New Jersey on Route 17, the heart of tacky American suburban bourgeois capitalism at its best. At the time my best friend, her teenaged daughter and I hung around together a lot. They were Greek - very Greek, which somewhat prepared me to meet my first Gypsies. (I am half Polish American. The rest of my ancestry is a conglomeration of peoples from Northern European countries, with the exception of Ireland). So there we were, Greeks, Poles and Gypsies. They stayed for the service, (maybe they prayed...maybe not) ...had coffee and cookies/cake with us and as far as I know did not steal anything. But they were colorful. Not in a clothing or makeup sort of way, but they stood out, ya know? They were like a giraffe in a herd of elephants. I seem to like people that are colorful and a bit, well...different.
                                    So now that I am finally reading your book I am wondering...how did the Gypsies make you feel, interiorly, inside yourself, when you were there among them? Did you feel safe? Challenged? Was there anything magical or mystical about them or is that all a bunch of crap? (Excuse the French). I am personally involved to some extent with metaphysical pursuits, so this interests me. Did they have one particular religious persuasion and did they keep that separate from any personal/folkloric practices? Do you think they stole more than their wonderfully trustworthy neighbors? (Personally I think all people steal. Polish people steal- we are just not as clever about it as the Gypsies. Americans steal too- only when Americans do it we dress up in suits and sit at fancy desks, no?)
                                    Anyway- some observations : I like your writing style. It is funny in a dry way sometimes, which I like , as my sense of humor is very dry (so I am told). If you did not intend to be comical I apologize. I especially like the paragraph about trying to kill the chicken in the bathtub. (Page 128) .I laughed out loud. It seemed like something my Greek girlfriend would try.
                                    Also: I like your picture on the jacket cover of the book.. If I met you I think I would probably be afraid of you. You are pretty but look a bit tough. And sly. Maybe they rubbed off on you a little, huh? (And no, I am not a man, and not a lesbian either. I am just a regular suburban housewife/nurse with a certain boldness, I guess.)
                                    I also liked all the pictures. Gave everything a sense of reality- that you were not discussing a bunch of Gypsies in caravans in a movie or in the past, but real people that are living now, and being mistreated now. Makes one very nervous. Frightened. Who's this going to happen to next? (I knew they were targeted by Hitler in WWII but did not know they were still singled out in hate crimes in our generation. I am active in the Wiccan movement in the USA, which is now quite out in the open...I am concerned that the furture may hold for us what is has held for the Gypsy- being outcast, unaccepted and always on the fringe, the edge. Always outside, not unified . Vulnerable and targeted.)
                                    I am also wondering- why did you write about Gypsies? As a group in rather challenging geographical areas, it must have been dangerous for you to visit and chronicle them. I tried to figure this out from the sparse notes on the book but you are a mystery woman.

                                    Well, that's it for now. Gotta get back to the book. More later....

                                    January 16...Finally finished the book ! Hazzah! Very nice. I felt somewhat sad afterwards though. They have no unified voice, only weeping for their collective soul. Much misery and heartbreak. I will remember them forever now, each time I see a golden coin. Thank you for a very good read.
                                    That was my letter to the author Ms. Fonseca- hope you enjoyed it!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-03

                                    A well-researched and -presented ethnography of this mysterious culture. The author's in-depth examination, including interviews and observations, helps to illuminate fascinating realities as well as offer intriguing possibilities regarding the gypsy mind-set and world-view.

                                    Gypsies,(from Egyptians) or the more politically correct ROM or Roma or Romani have been around in Europe especially, have been the rug that you wipe you feet on before going into "Civilized" Eastern Europe. More than any group, except for the American Indians or Indigineous Peoples of Central and South America, the Rom have been looked at as being below contempt. They are the epitome of dirt, thievery, illiteracy, uncontrolled procreation and uselessness.

                                    On the scale of untermenschen (underpeople) the Nazis listed them with the mentally and physically handicapped as chronically criminal and not worthy of mention in most of their racial laws. They usually qualified under the catchall 'other'. They have suffered mostly because they are a 'people' without a history. Who are they? Where do they come from? What is that language they speak? How are they all related?

                                    Isabel Fonseca spent years with them, learning their customs and language and trying to understand what they are/were. But even she will admit that it is impossible to understand the Rom unless you are a Rom. You are the ultimate outsider, without an advocate
                                    for your rights of nationality and homeland.

                                    In 21st century Europe, where most post WWII nations are mostly ethnically homogenized (with almost all Western European nations having non-statistically significant minorities), they still stand out like a sore thumb. Unlike Turks in Germany, and Arabs in France, what homeland would you repatriate them to? Egypt? India? Persia? if they won't/don't choose to assimilate?

                                    This IS a great sociological study, written with compassion and finese. Read it.

                                              Popper formulates and explains his non-justificationist theory of knowledge. Science--empirical science--aims at true explanatory theories, yet it can never prove, finally establish, or justify any of its theories as true, not even if it is in fact a true theory. Science must continue to question and criticize all its theories, even those which happen to be true.

                                              During the 1950s, while "Logik der Forschung" was being translated to become "The Logic of Scientific Discovery" Popper prepared almost a thousand pages of manuscript for publication as a companion volume to be called "The Postscript to The Logic of Scientific Discover: After 20 Years". The 20 years was the time from the original publication of "Logik". It eventually became almost 50 years. For various reasons publication was delayed until William W. Bartley undertook the task of editing the large manuscript. At last The Postscript appeared in three volumes (with further additions) in 1982 and 1983. Volume 1 is "Realism and the Aim of Science", volume 2 is "The Open Universe: An Argument for Indeterminism" and volume 3 is "Quantum Theory and the Schism in Physics".

                                              This is probably the least enjoyable of Popper's works, though it offers an important corrective to the widespread idea that Popper's ideas were superseded by Kuhn and Lakatos. In the first part, "The Critical Approach" Popper replies to Kuhn and Lakatos and shows that they never really offered significant criticisms (or alternatives) to the critical approach or to Popper's theory of conjectural objective knowledge. They did identify some problems with "falsification" and these were widely regarded as serious criticisms of Popper's ideas, even though he had recognized the problems some decades before and answered them. For example, Popper had always realised that falsification was only logically decisive (in a way that verification was not) because in real life observations are fallible and they need to be interpreted in the light of theories.

                                              In the second part of the book Popper outlines his thoughts on the propensity interpretation of probability. This is his effort to overcome the defects of subjective theories of probability and the challenge of providing a theory of the probability of single events. This is an important but technical area of his work which some people find engrossing and others approach with a kind of mental block. I suggest that you ask David Miller to comment on Part II.

                                              Popper has presented his controversial views of induction and the nature of scientific discovery in a number of essays and books, but no where does he advance some of his seemingly paradoxical views better than in "Realism and the Aim of Science." At first blush, Popper's views of the nature of scientific inquiry seem to defy common sense. He believes, for instance, that the distinguishing mark of scientific theories are their falsibiability, rather than verifiability; that audacity, rather than caution, is the essence of science; that irrefutability is not a virtue in a theory but a vice; and that no scientific theory ever becomes more probable when evidence is discovered in its favor but must always remain infinitely improbable. What makes this book so remarkable is the brilliant arguments Popper advances for these seemingly absurd views. Popper demonstrates why these views are necessary in order to have a rational view of science, arguing that the opposite view of knowledge, the view that regards verifiability as central to scientific inquiry, tends to blind those seeking the truth from facts which would refute their theories. Hence Popper's belief that, instead of trying to prove our theories, we should try to falsify them instead. That way, if there are facts out there which would disprove them, we are much more likely to find them.

                                                Over a decade ago, an initiative emerged to link the fragmented wildlands and protected areas of Mesoamerica, the region including southern Mexico and Central America, through corridors of natural and restored habitats, so the rich flora and fauna could disperse and migrate between North and South America. In 1997, the region's Heads of State signed a Resolution to establish the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor (MBC). International agencies, private foundations, and conservation groups have committed several hundred million dollars to build the MBC, however, progress has been slowed by a lack of analysis and policy options for MBC implementation. Defining Common Ground for the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor is the first in a series of Notes intended to catalyze actions necessary to plan and implement the MBC. This publication introduces the MBC Initiative, examines its implications for major stakeholder groups, and identifies some of the most pressing challenges that must be addressed if the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor is to be translated into a widely supported and effectively implemented program of action. It is hoped that this Note, and those that follow, will help readers articulate their own expectations of the economic, social, and environmental outcomes they desire from the MBC, and further bring those targets to fruition.
