5 out of 5 stars A True Aggie Legend Highlights The Very Best In Aggieland.......2000-09-29

"Ol'Army" comes to life in this easy to read Aggie primer, appropriately titled "I Bleed Maroon."

Any student entering A&M as a freshman should put this on their "must read" list, even before attending Fish Camp. Any student who really cares about tradition at A&M should read it too. The rich traditions at A&M have begun to fall victim to the size of the university and lack of leadership which is why this book is so important.

If anyone is really serious about making the most of their experience at A&M and wants to take a leadership role in protecting the tradition in Aggieland, this is where you should start.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book of "Old Army" stories and traditions.......2000-03-02

This book is an excellent read, and a must on the coffee table of any maroon blooded Aggie. Frank is an outstanding person of character, and truly emboldens the ideas of the Aggie Spirit.

If you're an Ag, you won't regret buying this book! Makes an excellent gift!

P.S. To the other disenchanted reader -- All I have to say is "[don't worry]... tinkerbell was a fairy too". T-sips will knock this book only because they don't have a book like it. Seriously -- do a search for "I Bleed Burnt Orange".

5 out of 5 stars Nothiing can compare.............1999-05-22

Not just a book, but a guide. A guide that leads you through the basis for what has made College Station, TX---Aggieland. Shows the true spirit in what tradition and pride are all about. There is no school quite like it, so untill you've been there-- you have no idea! Bryan Re '02 Environmental Design (College of Architecture)

1 out of 5 stars Pitiful aggie propaganda.......1998-09-17

The book represents the all the worst aspects of the Texas aggie mentality--arrogance, narrow-mindedness, adherence to strict conformity. If one enjoys reading cliched potshots at UT (e.g., "t.u., t.u.--where the girls are girls and the boys are too"), pathetic attacks on anyone who dares question "tradition," and exhortations to be as mindless as possible for the sake of "aggie spirit," then this book is for you. It confirms all the stereotypes of "old ags." Makes me glad I went to that "other university"!

        Book Description

"Van Ronk's wonderful memoir...is mandatory reading.... His anecdotes of rumrunners, mountebanks, and beatniks are often hilarious...[its] charm lies in its unvarnished simplicity." (Douglas Brinkley, Boston Globe)

"A genial and picaresque ramble." (New York Times Book Review)

"In Greenwich Village, Van Ronk was king of the street, he reigned supreme." (Bob Dylan)

Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) was one of the founding figures of the 1960s folk revival, but he was far more than that. A pioneer of modern acoustic blues, a fine songwriter and arranger, a powerful singer, and one of the most influential guitarists of the '60s, he was also a marvelous storyteller, a peerless musical historian, and one of the most quotable figures on the Village scene.

The Mayor of MacDougal Street is a first-hand account by a major player in the social and musical history of the '50s and '60s. It features encounters with young stars-to-be like Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, and Joni Mitchell, as well as older luminaries like Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, and Odetta.

Colorful, hilarious, and engaging, The Mayor of MacDougal Street is a feast for anyone interested in the music, politics, and spirit of a revolutionary period in American culture.

5 out of 5 stars The Mayor of Macdougal Street.......2007-07-14

This is just a great read - - we knew Van Ronk was a great singer and performer, but who knew he could write so well, too! This is the real deal - - the whole story from the beginning, and enlightens everything you thought you knew about the singer, Greenwich Village in the 50s, his rise to acclaim, Greenwich Village in the 60s, and so much more. It's essential reading for anyone who's interested in the great folk scare, NYC in the 50s-60s and beyond, Dylan fans and folk fans in general. Really well done. A great bit of history, and funny too!

5 out of 5 stars Van Ronk Holding Court.......2007-05-19

Keep a dictionary handy when you read this book. It's going to make you grin with pleasure, because Dave Van Ronk was no slouch with words. Just as with his music, Van Ronk was deeply devoted to his craft in his writing. He certainly managed to get his big arms around the world he breathed.

This book is bracingly honest, unfailingly adroit, and on top of that, it's funny as all get out. Move over, Bill Bryson. As a raconteur, Van Ronk takes a backseat to no one.

And, what stories he had to tell... He turned down an offer by Albert Grossman to join with Peter Yarrow and Mary Travers to form a trio. "Peter, Dave and Mary would never have worked", Van Ronk grouses. As a folk-bluesman, Van Ronk never made it big, but like the old blues people he pays tribute to, he knew who he was and that's all that counted.

He understood what made the music tick, the times he lived in, and what separated the big successes from the pack. He provides great analysis of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan.

Anyone who picked up a guitar and tried to learn finger-picking should wax wistful about a fellow like Van Ronk, who rubbed shoulders with and took lessons from the Reverend Gary Davis, and engaged in a snowball fight and arm-wrestled with the ever-spry Mississippi John Hurt.

An amazing book by an amazing man, this is.

        4 out of 5 stars A Lovely Book.......2007-03-18

The Mayor of MacDougal Street is a lovely book, full of wit and full of heart. It is probably partly due to my having lived and worked during the folk and blues revival of the sixties and seventies, and having known some of the people in Cambridge and the Village that van Ronk writes so tenderly about, that I enjoyed the book as much as I did. The reader who is unacquainted with that scene and that time might find it less compelling. My fondness for this great musician and voluptuary has been heightened by this memoir and its companion CD of the same title.

4 out of 5 stars More than a Mayor .......2007-03-09

The Mayor of MacDougal Street is right there with Bob Dylan's Chronicles if you are looking to research the music world. It is a veritable encyclopedia of musicians and songs. Dave's book one ups Dylan's book on references because there are more peripheral nods to the musician's scene; political personalities, club owners, agents, bar tenders, authors, and drug dealers to mention a few. It seems like no one was left out. Blossom Dearie, Pink Anderson, Jimmy Noone, Francois Villon, and Joan Baez's sister-- the names are endless. Throughout his passionate memoir Van Ronk recounts stories and anecdotes with skill, wit, and laugh-out-loud humor.
He did his part for socialism and saw the inception of a union for folk singers. It is a major achievement that he was never arrested on the tail end of McCarthyism; it was the late fifties and other than a brief stint as a merchant seaman he was a musician with a beard!
There is insightful commentary on charts and chords only a musician would understand and raconteurs about Lenin and Trotsky only a political science student would grasp but it's all laid out chronologically as Van Ronk matures into the Folk flood of the early sixties that happened in New York, Boston, and San Francisco.
In some places the analysis of his past are postpositive and you get the feeling he missed or fell short of his place in the sun spots of musical time. He tells about a lot of musicians being bitter or jealous of Dylan's initial success who harbored the attitude "why him" but offers the explanation that none of these musicians who complained ever wrote "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall."
If Van Ronk was frustrated or unfulfilled because of circumstances or a defect of character he comes clean in the final chapters.
The Mayor of MacDougal Street is an honest narrative and after reading it I got up off the floor, sat down in a chair, and started reading it again.
It propelled me to check out his recordings. Here is a guy who works with an acoustic guitar and his voice-- only. It's refreshing to hear artists as themselves without all the engineering tricks and corporate advertising smoke and mirrors that musical acts have to use today in order to stay in the business.
Where else can you find a version of "Swing'n On A Star" with an acoustic guitar doing 5ths around the horn?
I bought two copies of this book and put them on the shelf next to `On the Road' and `Really the Blues.'

4 out of 5 stars Just van Ronk.......2007-01-10

I attended a van Ronk performance ten years ago in Christchurch , New Zealand. It was in a bikers Blues Bar. He was right at home there.
He is at home to us in the pages of this memoir.
The tellings are ' of their time'. At once rough and poignant. My 4 **** rating is petulant. Simply that he (whose voice is indominitable - I said that- and that of a 'Soldier of Fortune' - Dylan said that) had the temerity to die before he could personally add more to his wonderfully honest appreciation of the times in which he lived, based on the origins of a music form that has been purloined by minor talents that have received massive public attention and notoriety. Nothing glib here. It's straight van Ronk.

            Book Description

Has the global spread of predominantly North American popular culture forced Asian nations and communities to produce nothing but pale imitations of a shallow, hedonistic alien culture? Far from it!

Global Goes Local examines popular culture from pop music in contemporary Korea and pre-war Shanghai to television dramas in China and TV commercials in Malaysia. International scholars with varying disciplinary perspectives show how imported cultural forms can be invested with fresh meaning and transformed by local artists to assert identity and express resistance. This collection tackles significant questions about popular culture and offers case studies of how culture suffers, survives, or prospers in Asian communities in an age of global communication.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource for a RPG beginner!.......2000-04-07

Sean Fannon has done an admirable job in writing a book that easily introduces role-playing games (RPGs) to someone who knows nothing of that strange but wonderful sub-culture, but is curious to know more. Fannon's style is readable and entertaining, balancing tons of useful information with bits of whimsy (the editor's constant "berating" of Fannon in the footnotes for Fannon's endless use of puns is especially funny). You get the history of RPGs, the general outline of how they are played, how to find other gamers, etc. And as a special bonus, you get the art of John Kovalic (of DORK TOWER fame) throughout the book. The only quibbles I have are that the book is not well edited; paragraphs run together sometimes, and some of the "bordered" text runs outside the borders. Also, old gamers will find much of this info redundant, having lived through it all before. In all, though, this is an excellent book for new gamers.

1 out of 5 stars another Amazon fake-out........2007-04-25

This is NOT a book as all other reviewers have stated. This is an E-book for download only. Amazon is misleading by lumping all reviews together. When purchasing this, you will NOT receive any Hard copy at all.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, easy to understand read and reference........2007-01-12

The first time I opened this book I was hooked on it.

It has a lot of pictures and real world terminology. I'm an audio engineer looking to get into post production and this book also used and explains a lot of production terms I never knew.

The other thing I like about this book compared to other Final Cut books is that it teaches you how to use this NLE from start to finish instead of jumping around, teaching you the video editing process out of order.

This book starts with setting up the program and optimizing FCP for yout computer. Then it go's onto capturing al the way to the finsihed product.

Definetly worth the small amount of money you'll pay for it...

              5 out of 5 stars View,Edit ,Print.......2007-01-10

This guide to Final Cut Pro 5 is excellent. Like it says it is geared toward the learning but adds trinkets from professionals. I am a producer at URTV public access Channel 20 here in Asheville,North Carolina and everyone at the studio depends on all productions to be worked out through Final Cut Pro. If you are just starting out -this is the book for you. Carry this as your new bible. If you are a professional -there is still plenty for you to learn..maybe different approaches but well worth the amount you'd pay for a copy. A great compliment to a great piece of software........

              2 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic.......2006-11-24

I really looked forward to reading this book, as I have been thinking of buying Final Cut Studio and a MAC to run it. (not cheap in Africa I can tell you) I was dissapointed ... all these 5 star reviews led me to expect more, instead, I found a book that is just plain average. Example ... In Adobe Premier & Avid Liquid I use the ripple tool quite a lot, this book does not cover it in useable detail, I had to borrow some time on a FCP suite to find out for myself. The book contains a lot of "history" about "how you would have done something 20 years ago" ... who cares!!!? I certainly don't ever want to see a half inch Lo-band umatic machine for the rest of my life. The colour illustrations are great but the detail and user tips are lacking, making it pretty ... but basic.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2006-10-31

I have been trying to teach myself Final Cut Pro recently, and was making some progress. However, using lots of trial and error and referring to the voluminous Help guide was taking up a whack of my time, time I would rather have spent just getting stuck into the editing. I wanted a book that would lay down all the groundwork for me. This book fits that requirement perfectly.

It's really nicely designed - easy on the eyes, lots of screenshots and step-by-step instructions, and an intuitive structure. The writing style doesn't treat you like an idiot, but it is simply written, clear and concise. It also shows the shortest and simplest ways of achieving things. The shortcuts that I've learnt alone have saved me a lot of time.

Some important points about the approach the book takes: firstly, it isn't a 'project-based' approach. I bought another book which used a CD with files on it to walk you through the step-by-step process of achieving an exact final product. I hated this approach - it made the book very difficult to use as a general reference. With the Focal guide, I just use the index to find out information on what I want.
Secondly, it is far more functional than stylistic. By this I mean it shows you how the various tools work, not recommendations on the effects you can achieve. You're left to do the monkeying around with all the filters and things to figure that part out by yourself - but at least you should be comfortable at the controls.
Thirdly, it's not going to teach you how to edit, in terms of the types of shots to cut together, framing, and so on. Either learn this somewhere else, or use your own creative instincts.

All of which adds up to the book delivering exactly what it promises: a guide to the software, for beginner to intermediate users. More advanced users will want more detail. Good price, great book, will get you up and running fast. Buy it.

                Book Description

It is well known that the scientific discoveries of the nineteenth century posed problems for Christian theology. Less well known is the fact that the new understanding of history, developed in the same period, also created a number of difficulties. The realization that Christianity possessed a history of its own, and had changed and developed, raised numerous important questions for theologians and Christians alike. Newman's revised Essay on the Development of Doctrine provides the starting-point for this new and comprehensive survey, in which Peter Hinchliff discusses the ideas of a wide range of theologians from the full spectrum of British Christianity - from Roman Catholics through to theologians from the Churches of England and Scotland, and the Free Church - and their attempts to tackle these questions in the period leading up to the Great War. He proves that this hitherto little studied period in the development of theology is in fact an area of considerable interest and pertinence to historians as much as theologians.

The impact of photography, with its permutations and manipulations, has created incredible images of human hope and suffering throughout the 20th century. Inured as readers may be to the sights of our age, anyone who leafs through the astonishing chronicle that is Bruce Bernard's Century cannot fail to be impressed and moved by this vast visual document of the past 100 years. Weighing in at around 10 pounds and containing more than 1,000 photographs, this significant document of 100 years of human history displays Bernard's 30 years of experience as a picture editor with the Sunday Times Magazine.

Divided into six sections--1899-1914, High Hopes and Recklessness; 1914-33, Self-Inflicted Wounds Remain Infected; 1933-45, Rise and Fall of the Unspeakable; 1945-65, Atomic Truce Walks a Tightrope; 1965-85, Vietnam to the Moon to Soviet Collapse; and 1985-99, Chaos and Hope on a Burdened Planet--with accompanying text and quotations, Century presents an average of 10 images for each year, from the banal to the brilliant. In 1921 readers witness Claude Monet overseeing his glorious water-lily gardens. Next to that is an image of starving children in the Russian famine that followed the end of World War I. The young Princess Elizabeth walks her corgi in London's Hyde Park in 1934, while the facing page shows the moment of King Alexander I's assassination in Marseilles. American GIs laugh with girls on a German beach in 1946--a couple of pages on from the then recently revealed horrors of the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Three decades later, sees the Sex Pistols inaugurating the era of punk rock, while anti-apartheid leader Steve Biko lies murdered by police in his South African jail cell. By turns harrowing and humorous, Century is a magnificent photographic testament to 100 years of human advancement, futility, acts of heroism, and episodes of unspeakable cruelty. The book ends on a note of hope with a still from a 1999 German production of Beethoven's opera Fidelio, a triumph of goodness over evil. It is nonetheless difficult to erase the preceding image of refugees fleeing Kosovo in the same month and the same year--history's hour of darkness come round once more. --Catherine Taylor, Amazon.co.uk

This book has a lot of gruesome pictures and is not for those who wish to be shielded from the dark side of the last century. It certainly has a lot of images that makes one wish we could find a way to bring a stop to all of this horror, but this century is not off to a good start either.

I do wonder about the accuracy of this book after discovering an error. The picture on page 421 that purports to be of Nazis executing people somewhere in the baltic in 1942 is actually a picture of Nazi war criminals being executed in Poland in 1946. One wonders how many other pictures are mislabeled.

5 out of 5 stars Best Photography Book I Have Ever Read.......2005-01-28

Glancing through once is usually enough for most photo books. Not for this one. It is because what this book reveals is not just the image, the outer appearance, but the soul, the hidden driving force for all the tragedies and joys of human life.

As readers will find out, in this book the dark side of the human soul is disclosed much more than the bright side. This is why some people do not feel comfortable about it. However, more than one hundred million people were killed by the same species over the last century, which absolutely deserves our thought and memory. If there is anything can be benefited from the great sufferings, it is that seeing them can recall our conscience and concern for our fellow people's well being.

Shortly before his death, editor Bruce Bernard wrote in the Preface that "I hope that this book... will encourage younger people to dispise as well as hate and fear war and violence and any kind of exploitation or persecution of man or woman by woman or man". I salute to him for his wonderful gift to us.

The book quoted Woody Allen's words in 1980: "More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly." I hope this becomes a true joke because there has been, and will be people on this planet like Bruce Bernard.

                      Book Description

What was it like being young and gay during the closeted 1950s, the exuberant beginnings of the modern gay rights movement in the 1970s, or the frightening outbreak of HIV and AIDS in the 1980s? In this unique history, Nancy Garden uses both fact and fiction to explore just what it has meant to be young and gay in America during the last fifty years. For each decade from the 1950s on, she discusses in an essay the social and political events that shaped the lives of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people during that era. Then, in two short stories, she explores the emotional experiences of young gay people coming of age during those times, giving vivid insight into what it really felt like.

Hear Us Out! is a comprehensive and rich account of gay life, both public and private, from one of the pioneers of young adult lesbian and gay literature.

5 out of 5 stars Urbanization in Latin America.......2001-12-11

Cities of Hope brings together 10 essays written by several authors, including the editors that discuss the urbanization of Latin America at the turn of the century. This volume is wonderful because, not only are the essays interesting and full of great facts, but they tie together the ideas and problems that were prevalent in Latin America. The idea of housing, high rents, disease, middle-class politics, and reform are all combined so that they reader can see how they all interacted to an ends.
If you are interested in Urban Reform, particularly in Latin America, I recommend this book!
