            Product Description

In 1991, the Egyptian government initiated a major Economic Reform and Structural Adjustment Program (ERSAP). This included a stabilization component to eliminate fiscal and external imbalances, a reform agenda for the trade and financial sectors and the exchange rate regime, and an ambitious privatization program. Until recently, however, little was known about the impact of this program on employment and earnings in the Egyptian labor market. This collection of articles based on a recent large-scale household survey carried out in 1998 and an earlier comparable survey carried out in 1988 documents the changes that occurred in the Egyptian labor market over this ten-year period. The various authors investigate changes in the supply and demand for labor, including the extent to which the private sector has contributed to employment creation, and the groups that have benefited from employment growth. Trends in labor earnings and wages, in women's and youth employment, and in child labor and schooling are analyzed and the role of the informal sector in employment creation is explored, as well as the extent to which the labor market itself has become more informal over the period.

              Book Description

Here is a book of zany and irreverent humor, mostly doggerel (light verse) but a few cats (prose). The author writes for the knowledgeable reader, the curious reader, one who might ask “Why do we say it's raining cats and dogs not minnows and frogs or other aquatic stuff?” Read all about it within. Discover “Little Willie,” a tragic figure portrayed with callous indifference by the poet. Commiserate with “Mr. Early,” who hated such puns as what's that in the road, a head? Sympathize with the victim of “Road Rage,” who is advised to keep his finger to himself. Celebrate with Vern, the city councilman, who overcame “Tern Limits.” Enjoy these and another 100 or so crazy bits. You'll even find a couple of cute and gentle poems the author's wife made him include. Lose weight—laugh your butt off!

There is very little instruction orminformation. Successful use of this booklet is dependent on quqlity instruction from your teacher. The booklet it self is esentially devoid of helpful information.

5 out of 5 stars The Suzuki method is a wonderful way to learn an instrument........2000-04-16

I started learning the cello with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Variations in book one of the Suzuki Cello School. Ever since I first learned those notes, the Suzuki Cello Method has challenged and amazed me. I would whole-heartedly recommend the Suzuki method to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument while playing recognizable songs.

                                  Book Description

B> This book offers readers interested in the foundations of education a perspective arguing American society has undergone a series of profound social, cultural, and political changes since the 1960s that have redefined the meaning of teaching, learning, and schooling in a postmodern culture. The book directs readers toward many of the most vital issues in contemporary education including: the impact of media and computing on children and the schools, the role of gender (including the rights of gay teachers and students), and the changing nature of the family. The author also covers traditional subjects in the Social Foundations of Education, such as the organization of schools and the Separation of Church and State. The reader will also receive coverage of the work of educational theorists such as C. A. Bowers, Henry Giroux, Joe Kincheloe, Peter McClaren, and Shirley Steinberg. A Glossary of key terms may be found in the margins and are listed at the conclusion of the book for easy reference. The latest INTASC Standards are also included in an appendix and are referenced in sidebars in each chapter. Anyone interested in the historical and contemporary theories of the Foundations of Education.

This book is the same book as:

Go: A Complete Introduction to the Game (Beginner and Elementary Go Books)

The content is exactly the same, and only the typeface and cover are updated in the above version.

I thought this book was a merely solid introduction to the game, and that it was a bit scattered and disorganized for a complete beginner and a bit basic for a player who has reached the 'teen kyu level.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful intro to the game of Go.......2006-09-17

I cannot say enough good things about this book. Go is a beautiful game with the depth of chess, but the openings are a little more abstract than chess. Chess players usually love Go and Go players usually love chess. This however is one of the best primers to a complex strategy game that I've ever seen. My copy is battered and worn, because when I meet someone new to the game I loan them my copy to get them started.

The book itself is small, allowing the user to read it and focus on understanding what was taught. If you are interested in learning more about this game or teaching a friend, I cannot recommend this book more. If you like this book, then I would highly recommend the next book be: "The Second Book of Go". These two books will get you well on your way into the wonderful game of Go.

I had to use this book when I was in Graduate school and this was the course book. I still have the first edition and looking to purchase the latest version. It was very interesting information I didnt get anywhere before. I remember in my company some very Sr. developers were working to understand how to implement machine authentication, and they were using it. Having used it before and with my course notes I helped them out. What a name for me :). I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the network security. At least it is not as ridiculously expensive as Tanenbaum books. Yes it is very mathematical but remember this is a computer science book meant for actual software engineers. People with no computer science background but working in industry might find it difficult in the beginning.

This is a very good book on network security. It is a bit too technical for leisure/work reading. I got this book because it is a required text for my graduate class.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook.......2005-09-03

Great book for learning cryptography, authentication, or about Internet Standards such as PKI and Kerberos. It is heavy on the math and theory aspects, the book actually includes an interesting chapter on Number Theory. The last chapter entitled Folklore is a refreshing way to cap off the book. The one catch is that there is little to no pseudo-code included with the examples, so you code junkies will have to start from scratch. Overall the author's attempt at a light approach to dense material helps ease the fact that it really is dense material. It covers the bases and has some nice extra material.

4 out of 5 stars Some great stuff, but narrowly focused.......2003-10-26

I worked for 10 years in computer and network security, including many years as a cryptanalyst and a couple of years at a startup company. I now teach at San Jose State University, where I'm using this book as the primary textbook for a graduate class in computer security. The strengths of the the book are its coverage of basic cryptography (chapters 2 thru 6), "security handshake pitfalls" (chapter 11) and "security folklore" (chapter 26).

Chapter 11 alone is worth the (high) price of the book. It is absolutely the best introduction to the subtle issues that arise with network protocols you are likely to ever find. And Chapters 2 through 6 do a better job of covering cryptography (with particular emphasis on some of the not-so-obvious issues) than many books devoted solely to cryptography. And chapter 26 makes some nice points.

One criticism I have is that---with few exceptions---the rest of the book does not come close to the standard achieved in the chapters mentioned above. The chapter on SSL/TLS is OK and the chapter on Kerberos is passable (if dull), but the remaining chapters are relatively weak. Another criticism is that the title of the book is misleading. Outside of the cryptography chapters, the book is very narrowly focused on networking protocols. In my opinion, there is far more to network security than cryptography and protocols. Take a look at Ross Anderson's book, Security Engineering, to get a nice broad overview of security. Finally, the chapters related to IPsec are really poor. The author(s) seems to be so peeved with the standards committee for doing some stupid things that he/she/they do more carping than describing.

In summary, I highly recommend chapters 2 thru 6, 11 and 26. But you'll need to look elsewhere if you want to learn about more than protocols and cryptography.

                                    Book Description

In his approach to the relationship between Calvinism and democracy, the Dutch neo-Calvinistic politician Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) made the link between the political principles of Calvinism and the revolutions in the Netherlands, England and North America, which he considered to be the three countries of political liberty. It is striking that Kuyper presented the American Revolution as a belated consequence of Calvinism, but excluded the principles of the French Revolution. The sovereignty of the people, as promoted during the French Revolution, was rejected by him as contradictory to the sovereignty of God. This book, which won the De Savornin Lohman Award, seeks to explain and evaluate the political theory of early Calvinism and compare it with the political principles of the great Western revolutions from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

Emily Dickinson opens this book, appropriately:

"The Brain -- is wider than the Sky -- For -- put them side by side -- The one the other will contain With ease -- and You -- beside --

"The Brain is deeper than the sea -- For -- hold them -- Blue to Blue -- The one the other will absorb -- As Sponges -- Buckets -- do --

"The Brain is just the weight of God -- For -- Heft them -- Pound for Pound -- And they will differ -- if they do -- As Syllable from Sound -- "

                                        ----------------------------------------

From the section titled "Principles of the Brain-Mind Paradigm", early in the book:

"Three fundamental principles make up the brain-mind paradigm. The first is that the brain-mind is a unified system. The brain and mind are inextricably linked: no brain, no mind. ...

"The second fundamental principle . . . is that there are three cardinal brain-mind states: waking, sleeping, and dreaming. These are the fundamental organizational units of the brain-mind. ...

"The third principle is that brain-mind states can be measured and manipulated, and thus understood. We have already seen that brain-mind states are controlled by a brain-within-the-brain, the aminergic-cholinergic system. This chemical system provides a solid link between neurology, psychology, and the psychiatric use of drugs."

                                        ----------------------------------------

From the section titled "Managing Memory", not quite midway through the book:

"I believe, though I can't yet prove it, that the brain-mind traverses the states of non-REM and REM sleep in part to reinforce and reorganize memory. ...

"Though still speculation, there is mounting evidence that one of the reasons we need sleep at all is to permanently encode our memories. We sleep, and the past day's memories are reactivated as we dream, which changes their status; it advances them from short-term memory into long-term memory, perhaps by imposition of acetylcholine, which is omnipresent during sleep."

                                        ----------------------------------------

From the section titled "It's Normal to be Abnormal", toward the end of the book:

"The sleep prescription I have given myself works only for me. You will have to do your own analysis to find a prescription for yourself. As you plot the outcome, don't be surprised by extremes. There is great variation in our nonconscious states; some people need very litle sleep, others need a great deal, and many people require more (even if just a little bit more) than the social world allows."

This is truly a great book, carefully and thoughtfully written for the rest of us by a gifted working scientist.

I had to get my copy via an out-of-print book search (through a university book store), after I had read the library's copy. I paid $21 for a used copy of the paperback edition, which suggests that those who have copies are hanging onto them. A reprint edition would be very welcome indeed.

2 out of 5 stars Good as neurochemistry primer; poor on peripheral topics........1999-08-11

While I enjoyed (and largely agreed with) Dr. Hobson's analysis of the brain-mind's activity in terms of the competing aminergic and cholinergic systems, I thought that he committed the fatal error that many general-audience authors in neuropsychology invariably seem to commit, namely using the latter half of a book to push upon the reader hastily-argued pet theories that would be inappropriate in a more academic literary effort. After describing his central insight of the complementary neurotransmitter systems, Hobson sketches out his own unoriginal solution to the m ind-body problem, takes pot-shots at less biologically-oriented branches of psychology, and offers a dogmatic two-page prosetylization on behalf of scientific humanism. The topics are, at best, peripheral to the central argument of the book; at worst, they display poor taste. Hobson seems to have composed the latter third of the book by elaborating on notes jotted in the back of his undergraduate lab notebooks. Since such side forays would be met more critically in a more academic setting, the rationale for Hobson's choice to include them in a general-readership book seems obvious. His poor opinion of his readers' intellectual abilities seems equally obvious, as evidenced by the low level of detail in all areas of the book.

I have found Dr. Hobson's "The Chemistry of Conscious States" to be far more helpful than Candace Pert's "Molecules of Emotion". Thank you, Dr. Hobson!
