I have been a teacher for almost 30 years and am delighted watch my daughter enter the profession. After hearing of this book from a colleague at the community college where I do workshops and hearing her recommendation, I bought it and wish I had bought a copy for me, too!

Mr. Kitchen spells out step by step everything you should do when certain things that WILL happen, happen. This is much more straightforward than the theoretical rhetoric that you are spooned in your methods courses.

If you are about to enter the teaching profession, or are still a bit shaky in your first few years, this is a MUST HAVE!

As a teacher and coach, I have found that I learn best how to most effectively improve my own methods by reading about the experiences of those who have been successful. In the field of coaching, there are countless wonderful books by championship coaches whose accounts of their ups and downs are most illuminating. In the field of education, we are woefully lacking. Bob Kitchen's book is a rare first-hand account from a teacher who has observed and absorbed numerous lessons from the front of the classroom -- some positive, some negative -- and all are enlightening to those who have stood in his shoes as a high school teacher. Though I teach math, I find myself wondering how I might incorporate Mr. Kitchen's methods for teaching English into my own curriculum. And his thoughts on discipline and class management certainly provide a valuable resource for teachers of any subject.

To me, the best thing about this book is its honest and analytical reflection of the highlights and lowlights of a tremendously productive teaching career from an author who is not too proud to admit his past mistakes yet not so humble as to hide the secrets to his powerful performance in the classroom. I am a better teacher for reading this book.

Bob Kitchen has written a book containing a recipe for success for beginning and veteran teachers alike. His book is based on 20+ years of teaching and is practical and jargon-free. Bob gets right at the heart of why so many eager educators embark on a career which falls far short of their expectations. In a very accessible, conversational style Bob passes on many lessons - some of which he had to learn the hard way. He covers a wide range of topics from what you need to have in your desk to what to say the first day. His advice concerning dealing with parents, colleagues, administrators and staff members is clear and thoughtful.His anecdotal, conversational style is exactly what teachers regardless of experience need. He manages to pack more information into 94 pages than tiresome books that are much longer. I've taught for 30 years and have this book in my desk - you should too.

A really great book on sampling techniques. The chapters on loops heavily reference sampling. The MIDI chapters concentrate on drum sequencing. To get the most out of this book you will need to have a minimal investment in microphones and recording equipment. This book is written for those who really want to create their own sample libraries. The author emphasizes the difference between live track recording and sampling. The book is also useful to those who will use samples in their music, providing criteria to judge sample quality.

Let me start out by saying this book and the entire series deserves 6 stars, but the Amazon rating box only went up to 5. Whether you've been doing sound,music,engineering for a week or 20 years these books have something for everyone.The full color artwork is the best i've ever seen in any instructional book period.The companion dvd is fantastic, worth the price alone.Bill gibson does a great job with the subject matter and text,he covers the material thoroughly while making it easily understood. Highly recommend.

Comprehensive Style Guide for Software Documentation.......2006-12-25

This is a great book that tackles every aspect of software documentation with enough detail to get you started. Read Me First gives the push you need to begin laying down your own styles. It also reviews some basic grammatical issues that you as a Technical Writer must be aware of. I would recommend using several style guides if your company doesn't already have one. The Microsoft Style Guide is another great reference to consider. I gave this book 5 stars because of its easy to read format.

Good book, poor binding.......2006-11-02

This book has a lot of useful information. It's a good companion for The Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications. I like to underline and make margin notes but this book won't lie flat enough for these activities without ripping the binding. It has already fallen apart and I'm not even halfway through it. I tried to find a way to contact the publisher but searching for a few minutes found nothing.

excellent chapter about documents with links.......2005-09-13

Sun offers a style sheet for technical writers. These suggestions are used by Sun in its documents and are a very clean and internally consistent guide. Of course, it is not restricted to descriptions of Sun's products. A lot of care has gone into the guide.

Plus, the suggestions are not just for printed documents. Nowadays, a lot is expressed in languages with links, like HTML or PDF, and the advice pertains here too.

For illustrations, you are shown how to display interactable icons differently from non-interactable images. Subtleties, to be sure. But taking these into consideration makes for a clean document.

On the subject of documents with links, a chapter has cogent suggestions on the proper usage. Like avoiding overlinking, which is a common flaw amongst writers new to this. Also avoid linking with anchor text that is generic, like "click this". Instead, use more descriptive strings to help search engines classify the document that is pointed to. Assuming that both documents will be on the Web. But even if not, they might still be in your internal corporate web, and you might have an internal search engine spidering these. The strings will help the engine better classify both documents. This chapter may be the most vital of the book.

A good book gets even better in 2nd edition.......2003-08-01

The first edition of this style guide was good, especially if you wanted an alternative to the Microsoft Manual of Style, but this edition is even better. It covers a wider range of issues (for example, adding much information about writing online material), and covers them very well. In fact, the book goes a bit beyond style in an appendix on developing a publications department, but the topics covered are certainly relevant and valuable, so I'm glad they were included. I don't always agree with the style choices, but that's irrelevant; I've never seen any style guide I completely agree with. Overall, I'm so impressed with this book, I'm likely to use it as a textbook for teaching technical editors. As you can tell, I'm giving it the "highly recommended" stamp.

Super Reference Book for Creating a Company Writing Style.......2000-12-10

This is an excellent book to read if you are in the position of having to create any kind of writing style guides for the company you work for. The book's sections include one on writing style itself and why it is important, working with an editor, working wit illustrations, writing for an international audience, legal guidelines, the "mechanics of writing," creating an index, among others. The book makes some good points and provides an informative reference for writing style questions.

Two small points against it. The CD is difficult at times to use and the Recommended Reading section lists some books that are out of print. Time for an update perhaps?

However, it's still an excellent book to have when having to make decisions about your own company's writing style. When I had to write a Writing Style Guide as a class assignment, this book was one of the ones I used as a reference.

Since the 1980s historians have been influenced by two anthropological concepts: cultural distance and awareness of small-scale interactions. Recent work, however, has shifted away from these notions. We now see that cultures cannot be studied as units with internal coherence and that the microcosm does not represent a cultural whole.

This book proposes an alternative. Differentiation is the keyword that lets us focus on ruptures, contradiction, and change within a society. It drives us to recognize many different histories as opposed to one official history. The case studies in Between History and Histories use this new approach in historical anthropology to examine how certain events are silenced in the shadow of others that are commemorated by monuments, ceremonies, documents, and story-telling. The first set of studies explores cases around the world where the official construction of the past has been contested. The second set describes the silences voiced as a result of these disputes.

In the early fifteenth century, the general council assembled at Constance and, representing the universal Church, put an end to the scandalous schism which for almost forty years had divided the Latin Church between rival lines of claimants to the papal office. It did so by claiming and exercising an authority superior to that of the pope, an authority by virtue of which it could impose constitutional limits on the exercise of his prerogatives, stand in judgement over him, and if need be, depose him for wrongdoing. In so acting the council gave historic expression to a tradition of conciliarist constitutionalism which long competed for the allegiance of Catholics worldwide with the high papalist monarchical vision that was destined to triumph in 1870 at Vatican I and to become identified with Roman Catholic orthodoxy itself. Superb piece of work........2007-01-26

I came across this book while studying for a teaching qualification. I'd already heard about how Lise Meitner and Rosalynd Frankin had been side-lined by history writers, so I thought I'd do a project on the history of women in science. This book is a real eye opener. There are so many areas where women's contributions to science have been ignored or stolen by men that one can get quite agitated reading this book. Buy it, read it, and have your eyes opened. It is not a polemic against "bad men keeping good women down", for those who may be worried about such things. It is, however, an excellent historical-biographical account of the unsung heroes of science
