Until the 1960s, rural laborers and peasants composed the majority of Brazil's population and yet most scholars have downplayed their influence on the country's history. In contrast, The Seed Was Planted argues that rural labor has been fundamental to the making of modern Brazil.

When the Brazilian military took power in 1964, anarchy in the countryside was one of the problems the conspirators used to justify ousting the civilian government. Cliff Welch examines this claim by narrating the history of rising rural worker activism in São Paulo, Brazil's most influential state.

Between a major revolt in 1924 and the 1964 coup d'etat, São Paulo rural workers gradually gained a place in Brazilian politics by seizing opportunities from ruling class initiatives designed to reform the agricultural economy. Welch shows how laws composed to incorporate rural workers in a controlled way became platforms for unexpected protest and political mobilization culminating in the 1963 Rural Laborer Statute (ETR). The unprecedented legitimacy the law brought the rural labor movement further spurred the agrarian mobilization cut short by the 1964 coup.

Drawing on rural worker letters, court records, news accounts, landlord observations, and government studies, The Seed Was Planted offers a rich and engaging sense of how rural labor politics were structured and experienced during this crucial period of modern Brazilian history. I was actually disappointed by the book. I just didn't find the humor all that funny. It is made painfully obvious that the author doesn't care for Gabrielle all that much. I am a huge Xena fan, but this book just didn't do much for me.

If you have a sense of humor, you will enjoy this book. If you don't you will hate it. It is totally tounge in cheek and meant to be that way. Don't take it seriously, you're not supposed to. Personally I found the book hilarious, course I am naturally crazy. To judge whether or not you will like it; if you like the humorous episodes of Xena, then you will enjoy it. Filling a gap that I never knew.......2007-06-25

This is the finest book on the sociological basis of music I have ever read. Many good books will provide a new fact on each page or two, but I seem to learn three new bits of history on every single page of this extensive analysis of the origins of musical styles in Cuba. But this is more than about Cuba; it is about Al-Andalus/Sefarad and Renaissance Spain and the eary history of the United States, and about northwest and central African peoples, and about Renaissance Europe, and about the early history of Islam and Arabia. It is about differing social policy and its effect on the slave trade. It is about what gave New Orleans jazz the Latin tinge and makes that city a treasure. It is about the distinct origins of the polyrhythmic, polytonal structures of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music and the recitative, glissando-embellished, monorhythmic music of the blues and later jazz. We learn about Louis Gottchalk's first use of the African drum in classical music [performed in Europe] and why such instruments were banned in England's continental colonies and the early United States since 1739. We learn how Moorish, that is, black, line dance style was once the rage of western Europeans, and led to England's Morris dances. These are among the smallest of factoids that you will encounter reading this highly readable yet scholarly book.

Because I admire and particularly enjoy multidisciplinary cultural histories, Sublette's book is a feast. His explorations are ours. You will be fascinated, and you will be delighted. The book is an education. Buy it.

There is nothing written in English that compares to the scope and depth of this book on Cuban music. (Leymarie's Cuban Fire comes close in volume of information, but it lacks the cogent overview and insight that Sublette masterfully weaves into the details.) This is a history of Cuban music written by a musician (!) who understands the importance of credible research when defining context and cultural antecedents. Furthermore, he uses his perspective as an outsider--he is a North American--to our advantage. Coupled with his examinations of the complexity of a Cuban identity and aesthetic, our North American culture also becomes more transparent.

This is particularly true when it comes to dissecting the story that most conventional Western Hemisphere histories neglect-the profound cultural influence of West Africa. As Sublette notes, "the drum...what an African would call a drum-is conspicuously missing from European music before the sixteenth century." Was it the creolized cultures of the New World that finally gave Europeans license to return to the dance floor after centuries of Church proscription? Sublette presents a convincing case for this, while simultaneously providing an explanation for those among us who are rhythmically challenged...

Readers also benefit from the full spectrum Sublette's perspective--that of a musician who migrates comfortably between the music of the concert hall and the dance hall. "Dancing," he writes, "is an intense listening state. Dancing can be complex and it can be spiritual. African music is almost always music for dancing; and so is Cuban music, which is African music's grown-up child." No armchair scholar talks like that.

Furthermore, his writing is not of that academic ilk that is afraid to offer opinions, or reveal passions. (For starters, he states that he likes Cuban music because he "has good taste.") Nor does he shy away from connecting the dots or hazarding wide-reaching theories. He is the first author I have come across to point out that the geographical origins of the African slaves-those coming to North America from the Senegambia, those to the Caribbean from the coastal areas-largely explains the differences in the musical styles (melismatic vs. polyrhythmic) between these two regions of the Western Hemisphere. Shouldn't this information be part of our cultural literacy?

The subject of this book is huge and Sublette is certainly up to the task. (Did I mention the extensive index?) I have also found, thanks to this text, that I am listening to Cuban musicians (eg. Chano Pozo, Miguelito Valdes, Arsenio Rodriguez) with new ears. That's quite a gift. Chevere que chevere!

Quien sabe, sabe.......2005-06-12

Ned Sublette really knows his stuff. Although he quotes extensively from other authors, his own research and experience combine to make this a wonderfully solid piece of work, and one that is long overdue. Sublette takes us back to the very beginning, unravelling the potent mix of cultures and influences that have gone into what we call Cuban music today. His attention to detail will be appreciated by Cuban music afficionados, for whom many questions will be answered and mysteries revealed. Read this book, and look forward to the second volume!

I wanna dance.......2005-04-07

An incredible book, filled with anthropological data, African history, European history, but most of all Cuba and its people and its music.

As a music professor and jazz drummer I found so much information I ended buying a dozen cds to hear what Sublette was talking about. I always knew that call and response is a hallmark of African music and used to say that there has to be an African influence in the 18th century concerto with its call and response. This book explains how the African influence reached Europe through Spain. So I have been right all these years.

Sublette is great when he weaves developments in music in the context of Cuban politics. We see how American intervention led to Batista, who was overthrown by Castro, thus Castro is really a product of American intervention.

But ultimately the book is about the music and it delivers with the punch of a conga drum. Required reading for anyone and everyone interested in music.

The book is a good reference when playing the game. The information in the strategy guide contains more information than the game's on-line help. The strategy guide has a cross reference to easily find information in the guide and in the software manual. For me, the quick reference makes the game play more enjoyable.

I particularly liked Appendix C, which gives insight on how to modify the game play. Alpha Centauri has seven players. The computer players have certain personalities. Quite frankly, there is one personality I do not like to play with. By changing a file, I was able to change offending personality.

Alternative manual - not strategy guide.......2001-08-14

The official strategy guide to SMAC was a disappointment. In retrospect, I realize I should have heeded the warnings in the other reviews. The beginning is good, with nice tips on general gameplay and the various victory types, but then it reverts to nothing more than a rewrite of the game manual and online help.

The Alpha Centauri strategy guide pales in comparison with the corresponding book for Civilization II, which is required reading for any Civ2 fan.

Not Necessary: And Now Packaged Free With Game.......2001-04-01

We're (the reviewers) mostly in agreement here that this guide doesn't do enough "right" (like faction strategies, unit design, etc.) and does too much "wrong" (like trivial descriptions of already available game info with little or no explanations of how a player might best make use of the info). I would have appreciated a book half as thick but with opinions on the how and why for designing well-equipped armed forces, choosing government types, allocating research, and so on.

It would be charitable to say that the book had more than twenty pages of useful information. Most of the materiol is taking the information within the games own rather good help files and rewriting them, and the tips they give are excrutiatingly obvious.

The layout of this book is not impressive. I find myself flipping back and forth and back for every reference to another subject. As a warning, it is a pretty advanced book as far as Frontpage goes. If you have little to no knowledge of Frontpage, get Frontpage for Dummies as this book will be difficult to learn with. This is what I had to do. But after a couple years of experience with Frontpage, I can finally use this book.

I had no experience building web sites when I bought Jim Buyen's book "FrontPage INSIDE OUT". In just a few weeks, I had my first site up and running. Two more sites quickly followed. The book is 1000+ pages of invaluable information. Plus, the book comes with a CD for viewing on your computer. The cost-to-value ratio of this book is also good. One tip the author included about "Adding Favorites" icons to user's browsers was worth the cost of the book alone. Don't be intimitated by the size of this book. As you improve your knowledge, things become crystal clear.

I must say, this book was the perfect solution for me. I had a background in object-oriented programming (visual c++), but absolutely NO experience WHATSOEVER with web/internet programming.

At first, I thought my goal was a little out of reach. I wanted to create a database-driven website that could recieve thousands of hits a day yet stay under my ISP's traffic limit of 5Gb per month. To top it all off, I wanted to start from scratch and have it all ready to go within 2 weeks.

This book was my savior. Every single problem I encountered was covered in intricate detail. What really separated this book from the countless other frontpage books I tried was its explanation of database relationships and how to work around the standard conventions.

Also, most people say that frontpage is too limited graphics-wise. That is true if you follow frontpage conventions, however, this book (along with the newsgroups on microsofts's website) will teach you how to "tweak" the code to get almost any result you want.

Highly recommended.

I just got this manual, and am pretty impressed at how in depth it is. The main reason to get this is the bonus CD. In includes Add-Ins not included in the FP2k2 software, and takes you step by step through all the features including the advanced options like installing plug-ins, etc. It's a big book, but I am using it as more of a reference manual. Plus the price is pretty good too.

Very useful.......2006-12-24

I've been reading and studying about the Korean War recently. I had bought this encyclopedia some months ago in anticipation of this. While I have read only a few entries in the encyclopedia, the ones I have read have all been very informative with good depth. As might be expected given the length of the book, there is a wide range of topics covered.

As to format, there is a very useful listing of all the topic entries at the front of the book, along with a plethora of plain but clear maps. I might mention though, that the map on p. xxviii, intended to be a map of the Inchon landings, is actually a reprint of the initial North Korean invasion map. Also, under the entry for "Orders of Battle", one is directed to Appendix I, which seems to be missing. However, in an undertaking as extensive as this, these anomolies are minor.

In sum, this book is a very important and useful addition to Korean War historiography. I'm certainly glad it exists and that I bought it!
