Based on a collection of labor contracts and other documents, this book examines the legal, economic and social relations of labor as they developed in the commercial enterprises of Tokugawa Japan. The urban focus is Kyoto, the cultural capital and smallest of the three great cities of the Tokugawa period, but the data comes from a wider region of commercial and castle towns and rural villages in central Japan.

Tokugawa businesses were family firms, but the system differed from that found in European cities at this time, and differences in family practice also resulted in a different organization adapted to business needs. This semi-public family environment also lent itself to conflict as outsiders were incorporated into family space, hierarchies and affairs. Conflict and its resolution is a topic of special interest in this study. Problems such as embezzling, stealing and absconding, and the mechanisms developed to address these problems in the paternalistic environment of family firms are portrayed through letters and other documents of accusation, investigation, apology, reconciliation and punishment. Numerous translated excerpts of documents written by and for workers and employers bring the voice of the people to life and in this analysis of labor relations.

SHOCK is back with a bang!!!!!.......2006-02-23

These three authors have put together another book filled with obscure horror movie reviews with films they watch in a non-stop movie marathon. In their past books they based their work on a single movie marathon. This time, they treat their readers to TWO of their own viewing festivals which results in a thick work loaded with reviews of movies you most likely never heard of! If you like horror movies but not the "popcorn" ones (like Scream, for example), you will have an interest in this book and their others.

All of authors grace the movie reviews with their own touch of humor which makes this book a fun read. It's funniest moments are also included in the multiple essays they write to accompany the movie reviews. The horror flicks in their books aren't films you can go to the local Blockbuster to rent. You have to really hunt for these titles and their stories reflect that. These guys apparently have to scout out little mom and pop stores to find these titles and the lengths they through to get them are hysterical. They have a passion for horror movies and their writings reflect that.

This book is for you if you are a horror movie fan and you want to find things out about some movies you not only haven't seen, but probably haven't heard of.

More than I expected.......2007-04-29

I read Hunter's tube amp book and found his style and focus both unique and useful to those of us who are looking for info that is in many cases, difficult to find in a clear, organized format. Guitar tone is something that is more than just amplifiers and pickups so Hunter covers the effects of first, the guitar then the amps. I'm sure that there is some chance that your favorite guitar or amp isn't in here but many seminal ones are. If you really want to examine the subject; this is the best book yet.

Can't wait for the second edition..........2006-02-28

This is a great book, particularly if you are interested in guitar music pre-1980 or so. I can't help but feel, though, as if something is missing from the book, because so many setups that are now considered "classic" are missing. The most obvious oversight is think is the complete lack of coverage of the Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120 amplifier, one of the most important guitar amplifiers ever manufactured.

A close second is the omission of any information on Mesa/Boogie amplifiers, whose most "classic" proponent would probably be Carlos Santana. If the combination of a Paul Reed Smith guitar and any Mesa/Boogie amp isn't "classic" by now, it never will be! PRS actually play-tests all their guitars before they ship through a Mesa/Boogie amplifier.

It would also be nice to see some bass guitars and amplifiers in here, say, the Ampeg SVT, Trace Elliot SMX, and others. Ah well, maybe if there's ever a second edition...I'm sure if I thought about for a little longer, I could come up with even more examples that should be included.

Understand why your guitar sounds like it does.......2005-09-30

A very interesting book. It takes you an an interesting journey through the history of this little darling of ours, the electric guitar with accessories.
It is not just a description of the classic guitar/amp combos, but an in-depth explanation of which elements in the sound chain that affects your output sound, and why.
Unfortunately most of the readers have already bought their guitars and amps before reading this book, but remember, there's always place for one more combo in your den.

This is a fantastic book. Dave Hunter is also a great writer. I personally have always dug the guitar/amp combinations of my favorite bands. If you are a "gearhead" this book is a must. Hunter really does a great job covering different generes of guitar music-surf, blues, british sound, jazz, and a fantastic chapter on garage sound. The CD that accompanies the book is killer in both dynamics and sound-goose bumps!!

Thorough presentation of several .NET pitfalls.......2007-05-31

This book is written with determination and care. Every aspect is explained at length and the examples are abundant.

But this book is not for everyone. If you want to learn .NET, C# or VB.NET programming from it, you won't be able to do it. Also, if you have time to search through zillions of MSDN pages in order to seek various details on .NET and/or .NET languages, then this book is not for you either.

But if your time is tight and you want to have many .NET common mistakes at your fingertips with no effort from your part, then this book is for you.

The Question is Why?.......2006-05-30

I made the mistake of buying this book based on recommendations I had read here on amazon.com -- don't make the same mistake. If you are looking for practical techniques that will help you write .NET applications, this is NOT the book you want. Now this book is sort of interesting and points out weirdnesses of .NET but nothing that I hadn't seen online. So, check this book out first by browsing through a hard copy in a bookstore to see if it's what you want. I wish I had.

This is an excellent book ..........2006-01-27

... for many reasons, foremost in my mind - the format makes for very efficient reading - and if all you have is 30 minutes a day, a gotcha or two a day and in a month you are done. That being said, I found some of the topics rather esoteric, so chose to revisit those at some point in the unknown, er, future.

Superb succinct read.

GOTCHA!!!.......2005-11-14

Are you among the many programmers who have come to appreciate how powerful Microsoft's .NET Framework can be as a platform for development? If you have, this book is for you! Author Venkat Subramaniam, has done an outstanding job of writing a great book that shares his .NET experiences with developers, to help them avoid the gotchas!

Subramaniam begins by discussing the features in the CLR and the Framework that can impact the behavior and performance of your application. Next, the author focuses on Visual Studio- and compiler-related gotchas. Then, he delves into gotchas at the language and API level of the .NET platform. The author continues by discussing the issues of language operability gotchas. In addition, the author next focuses on concerns related to garbage collection, and how to write code that handles it effectively. He also discusses, the things you need to be aware of in the areas of inheritance and polymorphism so you can make the best use of these important concepts. Next, the author addresses the general problems with threading, the thread pool, asynchronous calls using delegates, and threading problems related to Windows Forms and Web Services. Finally, he focuses on details you should be aware of to make interoperability work for you.

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of writing a book that focuses on the .NET Framework and language features that have consistently exhibited behavior that is not obvious to the programmer. So, why should you be interested in learning about these unexpected features? Because, knowning these little gotchas will help you avoid mistakes!

Technically Good but a Bit on the Dry Side.......2005-11-10

I got this book as a gift. I'm not sure that I would have bought it myself. Pros: good technical information, one of the few books to give both VB.NET and C# versions. Cons: very dry writing style and the topics seemed disconnected somehow. So, I give it a 5 for technical and a 1 for writing, for an overall of 3.0. I think this is a book you'll like a lot or dislike a lot.

How did Costa Rica become Central America's first successful democracy? How does Costa Rican democracy work? Placing Costa Rica in the Central American context, Booth evaluates common myths about Costa Rican democracy. He finds the glass half full and half empty: Costa Rica's demanding citizens and a responsive government interact vibrantly, yet 1980s-90s financial crises permitted neoliberal foreign lenders to somewhat erode democracy and undermine redistributive programs that once supported it. Citizens' beliefs and demands sustain democracy, but frustration with hard times and politicians eroded election turnout in 1998. Not a travel guide, the book should interest students, scholars, policy makers, travellers seeking depth of information. Beginning with theories about the nature of democracy and how it develops, Booth traces the growth of Costa Rican politics from militarism and elite rule in the late 19th c. through the development of full democracy since 1949. Chapters focus on how the present constitution and institutions work, social structure and civil society. There are also chapters political participation and culture, political economy under external neoliberal pressures, and foreign policy. Tables and an appendix provide abundant data on elections, politics, economy, and society through 1998.

Environmental politics in the real world........2005-11-29

This book is based on fieldwork in India, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Romania, Iran. It surveys leading policy makers, environmental NGOs, business leaders, and scientists using the same questionaire to model and compare attitudes in the third world about environmental policy and politics.

The results are counterintuitive; third world elites align with the Postmodern and Post Fordist (Golobalized economy) ideological spectrum on environmental issues except in Iran wheere the religious dimension is of course dominant.

In other words, third world elites have postmodern/postmaterialist values and are highly concerned with environmental risk. The Greens are divided into three attitude types and are highly practical and apolitical. The top ruling elites, while not strictly envirionmentalist, are highly risk-averse, and even the capitalist Developmentalists (old economic modernism) show a strong trend toward democracy, women's rights and less resistance to green issues.

This is an unusual book because it is based on concrete fieldwork that tests all sorts of comfortable academic assumptions against reality on the ground.
