Book Description
Whether the readers wants to stay in the auto industry or transition into another field, this book will help. It shows samples of resumes and cover letters that worked for real people. Newcomers to the field will learn how to show off their potential and skills to best advantage, and experienced professionals will find help in advancing to the best technical, management, and sales positions in the industry. Auto industry professionals often change fields, too, and the book includes resumes of individuals who have successfully transitioned into other areas. A "bonus" of the book is that it also shows samples of paperwork involved in obtaining federal government positions; for example, the book includes samples of the KSAs as well as the "resumix" often required to apply for federal positions.
Customer Reviews:
Pragmatic and Informative.......2007-01-09
An excellent book for the job seeker who is in anyway affiliated with any number of mechanical, engineering or technical employment(s). As an employer it gave me keen insight what to look for in a resume and who, amongst the potential applicants, is genuinely qualified and honestly knowledgeable of the type of work he or she is applying for. The author did her homework. Very very good, a little dated for the 21st century but thats only because terminology constantly changes as everything evolves at the pace that it does. Still, it is an excellent book.

Excellent resource.......2002-11-07
I am exploring Faith-based initiatives for my thesis, so read this book. What a great "how-to" book, for any faith-based organization venturing into the provision of government funded human services. Easy to read, practical information, experienced, knowledgeable authors. Mine came from the library, but I'm buying my own in hopes of using it in the field someday.

Old Wives' Tales: Are they really words of wisdom or just plain nonsense?Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis? Can microwave ovens make men sterile/Is it true that swallowed chewing gum never digests? These are the words we heard at Grandma's knee-the raw horse sense we've counted on to guide us through life. But are these words to live by or just dangerous outdated myths? Readers will be surprised to learn that many of these tales are actually good sound advice-a leaf of cabbage, for instance, really will work to reduce swelling. And it's also true that an oatmeal bath can help cure poison ivy. But other old wives' tales are not only false ("Lemon juice will get rid of freckles") but often downright dangerous ("Press a half-dollar to a wound to stop the bleeding").From the profound to the preposterous, Sneezing After Sex Prevents Pregnancy is a funny and informative look at the words of dear old Grandma.
Book Description
Few albums in the canon of popular music have had the influence, resonance, and endurance of John Coltrane's 1965 classic A Love Supreme-a record that proved jazz was a fitting medium for spiritual exploration and for the expression of the sublime. Bringing the same fresh and engaging approach that characterized his critically acclaimed Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, Ashley Kahn tells the story of the genesis, creation, and aftermath of this classic recording. Featuring interviews with more than one hundred musicians, producers, friends, and family members; unpublished interviews with Coltrane and bassist Jimmy Garrison; and scores of never-before-seen photographs, A Love Supreme balances biography, cultural context, and musical analysis in a passionate and revealing portrait.

One More Session For A True Expressionist.......2007-09-06
What can be said about this album?; on this book are mentioned details about this historic spiritual session that any music, jazz fan must indeed know. Read it and grow.
Great book!.......2007-02-11
"A Love Supreme" was already one of my favourite jazz record before I read this, but after having read the book, now I listen to the music in a totally different way.
I'm not a spiritual or religious person at all, but the book helped me understand what was probably going through Coltrane's mind (from a spiritual point of view) when he composed and recorded "A Love Supreme".
Homage or Adulation?.......2005-10-14
Kahn's stellar research for this volume on Coltrane's best known album, "A Love Supreme," is undermined by sloppy prose and lack of focus. Kahn does a great job showing just how powerful the album has been for generations of listeners, from Wayne Shorter to Bono. The biographical material on Coltrane is very good, but profoundly impersonal, skipping over key aspects of his life. The best part of the book is his meticulous documentation of the December 9 & 10, 1964 sessions that resulted in this album. Kahn describes the music with vivid language, and includes details about where Elvin Jones' drums were placed and how Rudy Van Gelder lit the studio to create a Jazz Club atmosphere for the performers. After that, Kahn's book loses focus. It's as if he had a 100 page manuscript, but then the folks at Penguin asked him to make it 250, and he had scratch around for any extra material he could find. His assessment of Coltrane's career post-"A Love Supreme" is very tepid, and the chapter on the legacy of the recording, especially from the vantagepoint of JOWCOL publishing, shows promise, but ultimately goes nowhere. Kahn's major problem here is that he doesn't know who his audience is. Is it for die-hard Trane-iacs, or is it for the casual listener that has "A Love Supreme" and no other Coltrane album? Some of this might not be Kahn's fault, as the content suggests this is for experts, but the formating of the book, with its wide margins and coffee-table book size, make it seem as if it's simply for show and tell in some bourgeois apartment. The book could have been better organized, more historically contextual, and filled with glossaries and footnotes for the more casual fans. Also, Kahn's lack of historical grounding makes it seem as though "A Love Supreme" was the only album released in 1965, and that jazz was the most popular music at that time, which is far from the case (just as it is today). Here, his homage to this wonderful album bleeds over into the realm of adulation. If this was a book for the "experts," it would be more critical of the album, instead of an all-out gush-fest. But Kahn's research must be commended (especially since he seems to be responsible for getting the December 10th performance of "Acknowledgment," with Davis and Shepp as added musicians, unearthed and onto the Deluxe Edition reissue of "A Love Supreme).
This book is really good!.......2005-03-31
Ashley Khan did a great job. I first picked up Coltrane's A Love Supreme, in the early 90's while a teenager, in a used section of a Parisian jazz record store, at that time i was only basicly educated about music and jazz. When i first played that album i was spiritualy moved and fell in love with it. I had no idea then of the importance of that record in Coltrane's career or in jazz in general, but the music touched my soul, and took me on a journey, which have been my (still young) life's journey and spiritual quest.
For the past 10 years i have been playing that record before evey major key events of my life... as a way to pray and meditate... i had no idea this album have been such a spiritual listening experience for other people before i started learning more about Coltrane and music. For this, Kahn's book is a very good illustration of the importance of that particular record. It is well written, have beautifull pictures and some precious informations. It contains basic elements about Coltrane's life, but reading Colrane's bio can remain a necessity. The making of a love supreme is a must read. Peace.
Loved it.......2004-02-20
Great music for those who love traditional jazz. Coltrane shows off his dexterity with the sax throughout this entire record.

Book Description
In antiquity Olympia stood for sports. A victory at the Olympic games led to lifelong honors and often to a political career and wealth. Alexander the Great and other kings and emperors as well as wealthy and powerful men and women financed the games by erecting religious and civic monuments. Numerous ancient sources provide lively reports about Olympia: activities in the sports arenas, the rites of the games, the reactions of the visitors. Still, many mysteries remain: When and why was the Olympian fire extinguished? Why are there so many arms found in a place that is famous for its Olympian peace? Olympia is situated in the western corner of Greece; why is it filled with oriental art? Some answers can be found in archaeological excavations. The author, Ulrich Sinn, has been responsible for major archaeological work; some of the latest is described in this book for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
press and reviews for Olympia.......2006-06-02
"Sinn (University of Wurzburg) has directed several important excavations at Olympia, and here he "tries to sketch [Olympia's] develop-ment into the arguably most famous sanctuary in the Mediterranean." Sinn argues that Olympia was not always a place for famous athletic games; and by the time written records appear at-testing its fame for athletics, the sanctuary was already 400 years old. In summarizing the extant records on Olympia, then, Sinn is particularly concerned to reveal details about worship at the sanctuary in its earliest times. In thirteen succinct chapters, Sinn summarizes what is known about the origins of Olympia, the struggles for power over it, worship at the oracle, the athletic games, how different philosophers reacted to Olympia's image, particularly of the athletes, how festivals and games attracted tourists and what they did, and Olympia's benefactors, such as Alexander the Great, Mummius, and Nero. Although Sinn focuses on primarily Greek Olympia, i.e., until the Romans overtake it, he gives an overview and helpful chronological summary (through the sixth century CE) in the last chapter. With glossa-ries of personalities in Greek and Roman history and mythology, this is probably the most accessi-ble introduction to and overview of Greek Olympia.
Religious Studies Review"
Karen A. Elliott
Athens, Greece
"The following review appeared in the March 2001 issue of CHOICE:
This work of a German archaeologist (Univ. ofWurzburg) who has been active in excavations at the site of the ancient Olympic Games has relatively little to do with sport activities. The greater part of the book describes the history of various buildings and monuments and the role of the site in Greek religion, society, and politics. Olympia was important in Greek life and respected by all Greeks, as well as by Macedonians and Romans. Its oracle imparted war advice, cult activities at Olympia brought together Greeks widely separated geographically, a Pan Hellenic arbitration court was established there, Greeks occasionally battled for control of the sanctuary, the site expanded in size and complexity with time, and earthquakes and floods threatened its existence. Information not generally found in other books is presented, for example, assertions that the Olympic Games continued until early in the fifth century CE and that academic classes were conducted in the palaestra. The book should appeal to general readers interested in ancient history, but history specialists will be frustrated by its lack of notes and reference citations, and sport historians, by its minor emphasis on sporting events, athletes, and spectators."

Very useful walkthroughs plus gives useable multiplayer tips.......1998-08-10
You may need to skip over some parts of the book to leave some suspense, especially if you're a first-time player of this game. The walkthroughs detail the maps in every hub, including the weapons and other units that could be gathered. One limitation is the elevation in the maps; you can't discern altitudes. Walkthroughs give you specific pointers on how to go to your objectives the most efficient way.
As for the book's multiplayer tips, use of keyboard and mouse is stressed for efficiency. It needs a little working-on on positioning in maps to give you a competitive advantage.

Dave Prochnow's ADD Ramblings.......2007-05-12
I am amazed that a giant book publisher, McGraw Hill, would even allow this book to go to print. I have to agree with the other customer reviews. This book was a huge disappointment! Dave Prochnow's book is erratic, confusing, and deficient of practical application. His writing was hard to follow and at times made me wonder why I paid $24.95 to read the ramblings of a person with ADD. In fairness his suggestions on PSP websites and selection of accessories were decent. However, the book lacked goof-proof, insider's guidance!
Basic hacks for PSP geeks: the first step.......2006-04-14
Dave Prochnow's PSP HACKS, MODS, AND EXPANSIONS comes filled with tricks, tweaks and upgrades to make PSP users transform the Sony hand-held playstation into the perfect reference tool. From downloading movies and audio functions for the device to streamlining hardware and software to work more smoothly and quickly, PSP HACKS, MODS AND EXPANSIONS is the computer geek's dream.
Sadly Disappointed/Book Sucks.......2006-04-13
This book is absolutely disappoiting. I mean I bought it and wish I hadn't. It only scratches the surface of what can be done with the PSP. Even though I bought this book used I am still disappointed. It is not at all what I expected.
It is basically a "How To" for connecting things to the PSP. It takes up 50% of the book with pics showing how to do useless things with the other products rather than the PSP. Case in point, connecting the Apple iPod to the PSP. Why would you do that? Oh ya, because the PSP can already play MP3's and you just wanted to do it because you could. Dumb.
I wish I would have never bought this book.
very disappointed.......2006-03-22
i bought 3 books online thru amazon. the book PSP hacks, mods, and expansions , has to be the worst book ive ever looked forward to reading. the author omited countless things promised and advertised on the cover that were no where to be found in the pages. it says u can download a copy of the book to view on your psp, i never found a single reference throughout the entire book, cept on the back cover saying u can download the entire book onto your psp!
i'd say that dave prochnow is the biggest goof online n in no way should anyone in the psp community buy this book, you aint missing anything. alot of the info can be read in the manual u get with your psp. just useless thru and thru.

Customer Reviews:
Fun *and* useful!.......2004-09-04
As I write this, the only other review attached to this book (Sonya Kimble-Ellis' Traditional African American Arts and Activities) is clearly *not* assigned correctly: it talks about science experiments, not African American arts and activities. The book linked to buy along with this one also has to do with science activities; it looks like somebody assigned this book the wrong category in Amazon's web database!
Regardless: this is a great book, part of Wiley's "Celebrating Our Heritage" series (see also Wiley's excellent books from Arlette Braman, for "Celebrating Our Heritage" and "Kids Around the World"). Like the other books from Wiley, the text is directed at kids but is especially good for kids and adults to explore together. It gives solid information accompanied by do-able activities with clear instructions. The Martin Luther King Day section is not exactly "traditional" in the folkloric sense, but this is a very valuable book. Kudos Kimble-Ellis and to Wiley for such a strong package!

Book Description
From where -- and what -- does water come? How did it become the key to life in the universe? Water from Heaven presents a state-of-the-art portrait of the science of water, recounting how the oxygen needed to form H2O originated in the nuclear reactions in the interiors of stars, asking whether microcomets may be replenishing our world's oceans, and explaining how the Moon and planets set ice-age rhythms by way of slight variations in Earth's orbit and rotation. The book then takes the measure of water today in all its states, solid and gaseous as well as liquid.
How do the famous El Niño and La Niña events in the Pacific affect our weather? What clues can water provide scientists in search of evidence of climate changes of the past, and how does it complicate their predictions of future global warming? Finally, Water from Heaven deals with the role of water in the rise and fall of civilizations. As nations grapple over watershed rights and pollution controls, water is poised to supplant oil as the most contested natural resource of the new century. The vast majority of water "used" today is devoted to large-scale agriculture and though water is a renewable resource, it is not an infinite one. Already many parts of the world are running up against the limits of what is readily available.
Water from Heaven is, in short, the full story of water and all its remarkable properties. It spans from water's beginnings during the formation of stars, all the way through the origin of the solar system, the evolution of life on Earth, the rise of civilization, and what will happen in the future. Dealing with the physical, chemical, biological, and political importance of water, this book transforms our understanding of our most precious, and abused, resource. Robert Kandel shows that water presents us with a series of crucial questions and pivotal choices that will change the way you look at your next glass of water.
Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed the first book better.......2006-12-21
This book is a sequel to "Crusoe of Lonesome Lake" by Leland Stowe, a quite successful book published in the late 1950s where the fascinating life of Ralph Edwards is biographed. Edwards, who can only be described as a 20th century pioneer, single-handedly carved out a homestead in the Canadian wilderness, nearly a hundred miles from his nearest neighbor.
Although this book was interesting, the above-mentioned prequel by Leland Stowe was far better. In fact, in many ways I wish I had not read this one because Edwards' exploits ended on a high note in "Crusoe" whereas this book seemed to tarnish my image of the bigger-than-life Edwards portrayed in the earlier book. But, I realize that most people who read the prequel will want to know what eventually became of Edwards in his latter years, and this book answers many of those questions. I would simply admonish anyone who reads this book to absolutely get the prequel. If you read this book alone, you are getting far less than half the story of a remarkable man's life. "Crusoe" is much better written and much more touching.
This book cuts to the heart of what life is all about.......1997-11-05
Ralph Edwards of lonesome lake is a book about carving out a life for ones family in a remote wilderness. This book is such a contrast to our technical world with cell phones, internet, e mail "Big Box shopping" malls. Our lives are so full but really so empty. I felt an extreme feeling of sadness after having read this book. Ralph Edwards and his wife are now dead after having lived a hard but full life. We all struggle through life with different goals and yet we all have to face death. I felt the sadness of Ralph Edwards when he realised that he was too old to be independant and look after himself. This book has to make us all stop and concider what we are doing and what is the purpose of life. What could possibly be more important than these questions?

Product Description
In 1912, Ralph Edwards left civilization and vanished into a remote section of British Columbia. Like Robinson Crusoe, he had to make his own tools and learn the hard way, by trial and error. Unlike Crusoe, he fought for his survival against a hostile environment; deep snow, bitter cold and wild animals. This is the story of his life-long and victorious battle. "A remarkable life story well told." Library Journal. "One of the most memorable books of modern times." Chicago Sunday Tribune.

Impossible not to be awed.......2006-12-21
My father gave me this book a number of years ago. It is a hardcover version dating back to the late 50s. Early in my career, I travelled extensively in the portions of British Columbia that are the setting of this biography, and so I found it especially fascinating.
The old saying "truth is stranger than fiction" is at least partly applicable here. It isn't so much that the truth is strange as that the truth is almost impossible to believe in this story. That this diminutive man, Ralph Edwards, could single-handedly carve out a life for himself in the Canadian wilderness a week's hike from his nearest neighbors is the setting for this true story by former Reader's Digest editor, Leland Stowe.
It is a man-versus-wilderness tale that reads almost like a novel, but is all the more fascinating because it is true. It is very moving in places and I actually wept at Edwards' tenacity in overcoming odds that were not just improbable, they seemed utterly impossible. It is a story of what one man can do when he sets his mind to it, and all except the comatose will find this a deeply touching story of courage and perserverance. Not only did the man build a house and a self-sustaining farm, but an airstrip, airplane, barn, electric power generator, and much more.
I highly recommend this book as one of the most inspirational I have ever encountered. You'll read about a man who really thought of himself as nothing special, yet overcame insurmountable odds to create the life he wanted with little more than his own two hands and the natural resources that surrounded him. The book reads as though it was written yesterday, not 50 years ago, and you would be well advised not to deprive yourself of this magnificently moving story.
Interesting Facts:
Apparently the book was quite a hit when it was first released back in the late 1950s, and put "Lonesome Lake" British Columbia on the map, even though it might as well have been the North Pole in its inaccessiblity. To this day, BC attracts many visitors to its Tweedsmuir Provincial Park based on the legendary exploits of the humble Ralph Edwards of Loneseome Lake.
Edwards died in the early 1970s and was commemorated by the BC provincial government for his work in saving the Trumpeter Swan from near extinction by nurturing and feeding the flock at Lonesome Lake. His work with these magnificent creatures is discussed at length in the book.
A sequel, "Ralph Edwards of Lonesome Lake" by Ed Gould, details Edwards' latter years. In particular, Edwards lived out the last few years of his life in civilization, while his wife remained on the homestead at Lonesome Lake.
Edwards' daughter Trudy homesteaded in the area just as her father, and continued his legacy of caring for the Trumpeter Swans. She wrote a book of her own under her married name (Trudy Turner) detailing her experiences. The book is titled "Fogswamp: Living with Swans in the Wilderness."
Edwards' son, John, still conducts wilderness tours of the area and had hoped to restore his father's homestead before a fire swept through the Tweedsmuir Provincial Park a few years ago, sadly destroying Edwards' life's work.
There was, and may someday again, be a time............2003-07-01
There was a time when people thrived in living among, not against, nature. There was a time when people reveled in a world without television, mobile (or cellular) phones, television or computers. Sorry messers Gates, Jobs, et al, there really was such a time!
Ralph Williams's story seems now to be only great fiction, for his feats are every bit as phenomenal as are those now shown on the big screen. Still, even though they may seem to be fiction, I can assure you they are most certainly true. Furthermore, great as they were, his successes were not that far different from many other folks of that time.
My grandfather emigrated to North America from Norway about the same time Williams moved to Canada's British Columbia. In fact, while he trapped in B.C. Grandfather may well have met Williams. Anyway, grandfather married after a few years and moved to California where he tried to homestead a quarter section that is now part of a famous ranch on a fork of the Kern River in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Alas, the Great Depression happened along and Grandpa was told by his kin to either homestead, or stay working at their glass factory in South Gate in southeast Los Angeles. For the sake of his family he gave up the homestead and told fellow homesteaders goodbye.
That winter a terrible blizzard struck the homesteaders. Grandpa raced his motorcycle the few hundred miles to the foothills of the mountains. He then cross-country ski'd food to the stranded folks - covering a distance of 17 miles from valley floor (perhaps 2,000 foot elevation) to the farmers at some 8,000 foot high. Such a feat is reminiscent of Williams in this great classic Crusoe of Lonesome Lake.
After you read this book, get a copy of Three Against The Wilderness by Eric Collier. Both titles are worthy of collection and reading time and again!
Lingering Source of Inspiration.......2002-01-08
As a teenager (a few decades ago) this book, like no other, appealed to my sense of adventure and love of the outdoors. The passion and persistence with which Mr. Edwards crafted his dreams were a lingering source of inspiration to me. I have purchased several used copies of this book and given them to each of my three sons as well as relatives and friends - all of whom have loved the book!
The most inspiring book I have ever read.......2001-09-06
I am 15 years old and I first read this book about four years ago. My mum was given it as a present after helping a family friend to move from Vancouver Island to the mainland. I have always been interested in the outdoor life and this book has really shown me that whatever it is in life you dream of just work hard at it and you will eventually realise your dream. The book was also a great acount of how man is able to work with nature and not against it. This is the best book I will ever read and should be compulsory reading for everyone!
