Customer Reviews:
This book is for everyone!.......2006-04-09
Teens and adults alike will be inspired and moved by this most amazing book. I'm very inspired by others who rise above the challenges of life-not in a sugar coated way, but in a real, down to earth way. The endings are not always perfect, but they are always inspiring. This book brought me to tears, for the sadness of some young people's trials, but mostly for the way each of these amazing young people are changing the world with their actions. They are the light of hope. (Okay, so I'm corny!) It really doesn't get much better than this.
From a girl who finds herself terribly lonely after a move, to a boy who loses a limb, to a boy from a gang, to battling illness or drugs, and many more, each a different story, a different challenge, the teens in this book represent everyone. Kudos to Jackie Waldman!
If you work with teens, if you are a teen, if you're related to a teen, if you were a teen: read this book. Be inspired. And then share it.
I'd give it ten stars if I could. Highly recommended!

Compelling.......2002-07-11
This book is amazing. Every story brought tears to my eyes. Every single young adult (some are probabally adults by now) is amazing in their own way. I can't wait to see more of Mrs. Waldman's work! You have to read this book to realize that not every teen in America is on their way down, to a life on the streets. Many people think all teens are bad news...read this it will change your mind. I wish all kids in america were like these amazing kids
Read "Teens" and Renew Your Faith in America's Youth.......2000-04-02
The stories of the 30 teens who contributed to this book by Jackie Waldman truly inspired and moved me. Their courage to reach beyond their own personal pain and give to others is nothing short of heroic. Our country is in good hands with young people like these contributing and getting involved. If you have children, teens or pre-teens, this book should be required reading. Thank you Jackie for sharing their stories with us. I would also recommend Jackie's first book "The Courage to Give" and look forward to any follow-up books that she may have in the works.

Book Description
A History of European Women's Work draws together recent research, lively personal accounts and statistical evidence to take an overview of trends in women's work from the pre-industrial period to the present.
Deborah Simonton discusses the definition of work within and without patriarchal families, the status of work and the skills involved. She examines local as well as Europe-wide developments, contrasting countries such as Britain, Germany and France. She considers women's own perceptions of work and its place in their lives as well as age and class, to present a rounded account of the shifting patterns of employment and the continuities which are evident in the women's own experience.

Book Description
Together in Rhythm is a complete guide to Drum Circle Music, a unique music facilitation approach that supports the highest standards of professionals in music-based disciplines. The book and 80-minute DVD provide the learning resources needed for anyone to successfully create in-the-moment drum circle activities for education, wellness, development, training, and recreation. The layout is easy to follow and the information is clear and concise. In addition to the core material, there is a strong personal aspect to both the book and DVD that reflects Kalani's 25+ years of experience through the many photos, stories, quotes and tips.
In Chapter one, Kalani provides an overview of drum circles, the Drum Circle Music approach, and its various applications (community, educational, therapy/fitness, and training). Chapter two outlines the DCM philosophy, process, and illustrates the importance of its key concepts and how they are crucial for creating the best possible outcomes. It also provides numerous activities and strategies for facilitating successful musical and interpersonal outcomes. Chapter three familiarizes the reader with the world percussion family of instruments and various ways individuals and groups can make music together. Chapter four demonstrates Kalani's effective facilitation techniques from the three main categories and introduces Kalani's drum circle notation system, DCMI (Drum Circle Music Iconography) that has many applications, from helping visual learners to cross-curricular support in the classroom. In chapter five Kalani presents six effective drum circle activities that can help! anyone have immediate success with groups of all sizes. (Each activity also appears on the DVD). Chapter six shows how to present a Drum Circle Music event in a step-by-step process that is easy to follow. This section also features special tips for music stores. Chapter seven dives deeper into the DCM approach with strategies for creating a holistic experience for all the participants, creating meaningful personal connections, and helping the reader learn about and apply the theory of multiple intelligences which is widely recognized as a way foster learning and aid in the developmental process of diverse populations. Chapter eight shows how to present four unique cooperative learning games. The games are outcome-oriented activities that are designed to reach specific developmental goals. Each game is presented in an easy-to-follow format and shown on the DVD. (More games can be found in the companion book, The Amazing Jamnasium). Music educators, music therapists, trainers and counselors will find these particularly useful in their work. Chapter nine addresses the needs of specific populations and offers many activities, strategies, and tips for creating effective programs that address their needs. Special populations include Community Circles, Educational Circles, Training & Development Circles, and Health & Wellness Circles. Kalani addresses the finer points of music facilitation, including how group drumming can benefit our health and ways to make sure the experience is safe and supportive for all participants.
The chapters are supplemented with a wealth of information including an instrument guide, an instrument quick reference chart, how to build an Instrument kit, rhythm basics, a table of DCMI symbols, information about DCM Training Programs, and an overview of the National Standards for Music Education.
The 80-minute DVD shows a complete drum circle event from start to finish (with DCMI in the upper left corner of the screen), games and activities, interviews with Kalani and the participants, and demonstrations of over 25 World Percussion instruments.

If you are in music, education and rhythm. And how to share with others. You need to read this book.
The book I've been looking for.........2006-08-25
I am grateful to Berry Bernstein for introducing me to drum circles at a Music Therapy Conference in Nashville. That was around 15 years ago. This is the book (and DVD) that I have been looking for ever since. A very practical methodology; good activities and concepts, excellent DVD with examples, and plenty of resources with which to expand. If I could have only one resource, this would be it. It presents so well the how, what, and why of drum circle facilitation. I am looking forward to receiving the companion volume, Jamnasium. Thanks Kalani!
An absolute must for the evolution of group music making!.......2006-07-09
Kalani has been prolific in his media works. Communicating important concepts on many percussion instruments in the past, he has now created a concisely eloquent manual on group music making. Of the three popularly accepted books on drum circle facilitation, this was the last one I read. While I enjoy all three books, I personally believe that this book is the best organized, best communicated, and most engaging of the three. Kalani communicates his ideas with clarity, using a "less words say more" approach. Sequentially speaking, Together in Rhythm begins with the important descriptive and philosophical underpinnings of the Drum Circle Music approach. The book then offers an introduction to the "mechanics" of facilitation and rhythm games, and then the logistics of creating group events, be they for training and development, music education, general community, or wellness. The book continues with an instrument guide, and ends with many appendix resources.
There are two things in my mind that stand out in this book that are part of what separates it from the other books out there. First, during the well-thought out sequence, Kalani consistently returns to his concise underpinnings in order to elaborate important points throughout the book. This contributes to the books overall organization and ease of use. Second, Kalani has developed a facilitation notation system called Drum Circle Music Iconography. The symbols are easy to use, and offer an invaluable tool for creation of musical sequences, and more importantly, analysis of our facilitation skills through visual representation and recollection.
As if that weren't enough (and no, I don't have Kalani's gift for concise speaking ; ) )
The book also comes with a DVD. The video gives the all important visual reference of facilitation cues and sequences in action, as well as an introduction to many percussion instruments and how they can be played. It is an excellent accompaniment to the book, making it's offerings relevantly sequential as well.
As a part of my profession, I conduct various types of drumming programs with many populations. This book, as well as attendance of one of Kalani's Drum Circle Music workshops, have been invaluable assets to my personal development and subsequent implementation of group music making. Therefore, I highly recommend Together in Rhythm to current facilitators, music educators, music therapists, and anyone interested in drum circle facilitation.
Together in Rhythm.......2006-07-08
Percussionist/Drum Circle Facilitator "Kalani" has created the ultimate owner's manual for beginning drum circle facilitators. The operative word here is "comprehensive;" Kalani's well-conceived approach is thoroughly explained throughout this 102 page text. Beginning with the first chapter ("What is a Drum Circle"), the reader is given a guided tour covering all aspects of this popular activity, including Kalani's philosophy, techniques, recommended games and activities, instrument guide, etc. The accompanying DVD (included) reinforces the book material and shows Kalani facilitating a circle and being interviewed.
Although other types of drum circles are discussed (community, training and development, and health & wellness), Kalani's specialty is the educational drum circle, and along with its companion book, "The Amazing Jamnasium," (64 pgs., with CD), "Together in Rhythm" will be a boon to classroom teachers. His system of symbols and notation, which he calls Drum Circle Music Iconography, the many suggested musical games, and the accessibility of percussion instruments should help to make this activity user-friendly for even the youngest participants.

Gramophone, Film, Typewriter (Writing Science)
ASIN: 0804726426 |
Book Description
Early practitioners of the social studies of science turned their attention away from questions of institutionalization, which had tended to emphasize macrolevel explanations, and attended instead to microstudies of laboratory practice. Though sympathetic to this approach—as the microstudies included in this book attest—the author is interested in re-investigating certain aspects of institution formation, notably the formation of scientific, medical, and engineering disciplines. He emphasizes the manner in which science as cultural practice is imbricated with other forms of social, political, and even aesthetic practices.
This book offers case studies that reexamine certain critical junctures in the traditional historical picture of the evolution of the role of the scientist in modern Western society. It focuses especially on the establishment of new disciplines within German research universities in the nineteenth century, the problematic relationship that emerged between science, industry, and the state at the turn of the twentieth century, and post-World War II developments in science and technology.
After an Introduction and two chapters dealing with science and technology as cultural production and the struggles of disciplines to achieve legitimation and authority, the author considers the following topics: the organic physics of 1847; the innovative research program of Carl Ludwig as a model for institutionalizing science-based medicine; optics, painting, and ideology in Germany, 1845-95; Paul Ehrlich's "magic bullet"; the Haber-Bosch synthesis of ammonia; and the introduction of nuclear magnetic resonance instrumentation into the practice of organic chemistry.

Customer Reviews:
Ok walkthrough and reference but mediocre strategy guide.......2005-05-05
Prima's Guide to Empire Earth 2 is an ok reference guide and has good walkthroughs for 4 single player campaigns. Unfortunately, it's not much help with the most difficult part of the game - unit management and overall strategy - and doesn't include quick reference materials. I knock off a star each for the lack of in-depth strategic help as well as a value proposition that isn't great, but since the game didn't include much of this material as it should have I still recommend purchase.
First, the positives. This guide has very, very detailed walkthroughs of the single player scenarios for America, Korea, and Germany, along with Turning Point. In addition, it has detailed numbers on every unit and special unit in the game along with technologies and upgrades. Finally, there are a few extra bonuses, like resource locations on the premade multiplayer maps (so make sure never to agree to a game on one!) As such, this is a useful reference as it has a whole bunch of things that weren't included with the game as they should have been.
However, this disappoints on the strategy side. While they do discuss civilization strengths and weaknesses, there's not a whole lot of analysis. I expected a detailed breakdown of civilzation versus civilzation by era; instead, the best you get is about half a page per civilization total. Hints and tips are equally disappointing. (An example: "Pay attention to civilzation bonuses." Wouldn't have thought that one up on my own.) Moreover, as Sierra skimped on certain essentials that should have been included with the game - like a technology and unit tree - one would have expected they'd have been included with this guide as say a end-cover foldout. They weren't.
Still, this is worth buying solely for the unit reference material, at least until some devotees of the game put that on the web in accessible format. It just that this guide could have been far more.

Book Description
For over three hundred years, the Indian peoples of North America have attracted the interest of diverse segments of German society—missionaries, writers, playwrights, anthropologists, filmmakers, hobbyists and enthusiasts, and even royalty. Today, German scholars continue to be drawn to Indians, as is the German public: tour groups from Germany frequent Plains reservations in the summer, and so-called Indianerclubs, where participants dress up in "authentic" Indian costume, are common. In this fascinating volume, scholars and writers illuminate the longstanding connection between Germans and the Indians.
From a range of disciplines and occupations, the contributors probe the historical and cultural roots of the interactions between Germans and Indians and examine how such encounters have been represented in different media over the centuries. Particularly important are reflections and insights by modern Native American writers on this relationship. Of special concern is why such a connection has endured. As the contributors make clear, the encounters between Germans and Indians were also imagined, sometimes as fantasy, sometimes as projection, both resonating deeply with the cultural sensibilities and changing historical circumstances of Germans over the years.

worth a try.......2007-07-25
Worried for the future of my children (after finding my son carving evil evolutionary slogans into his forearm) I decided that it was necessary to indoctrinate some Godliness back into them. This book seemed like the perfect means of mind control, with appealing illustrations to draw them in. However, when I read it aloud to them they responded by quoting from the satanist Richard Dawkins and also conducted their own experiment (using carbon-dating) to supposedly 'prove' the age of the planet earth. Unfortunately the book did not have any specific answers to their wicked 'science' of Beelzebub. I know that everything in the book is true, but I'm afraid that my efforts to brainwash my children into agreeing was a failure.
Great starting point!.......2007-02-06
We checked this book from our library. It is a wonderful starting point for teaching your young children science. The text also exhalts God in the process. To sum it up, this book is a very fun way to introduce your young children to science and reinforce to them that God designed it all.
Genesis for Kids.......2001-11-21
I think the complete title of this book sums up the purpose of this book "...Science Experiments that show God's power in Creation!" I admit I had difficulty making some of the relationships between the days of the creation and the experiments. But this book is for younger children, not for our children that we are trying to teach the actual principles of science. This book introduces our children to science, the process of doing an experiment and gives you some commentary that isn't evolutionary based. It is fun, not complicated science.
Wonderful age-appropriate & inexpensive experiments!.......1999-08-25
This book is full of short & hands on experiments! I wouldeven suggest it for younger kids 5-8 as well. Almost all materials canbe found in the home already, and if not, they are inexpensive to buy. This is great for any family on a tight budget! People who believe in Creation vs. Evolution have every right hold to our beliefs. Contrary to what you may believe, most of us teach evolution (AS A THEORY) in addition to our own belief in Creation. We do not ignore the fact that everyone has a right to their own beliefs. We do not brainwash our children, but rather present ALL worldviews. Please refer to the age group suggested... This book is not designed to teach Einstein's theories!
A fun way to learn about God through studying His creations.......1999-02-18
My family really enjoyed reading through this entertaining book and trying the experiments which reinforced the lesson being taught.
I would highly recommend this book to parents and teachers who want to show their children that God is the Supreme Creator and how wonderfully He made everything around us. I know that "evolutionists" and "big bang theory" types will probably not care for this book - but maybe they should still read it. I find that it takes a lot more faith to believe some of science's theories of creation than it does to believe in a Supreme Creator! :-)
