Book Description
This book is designed to help people who see their first federal government job as well as federal employees who want to advance in the system. The process of getting a government job often involved preparing complex applications or specialized resumes which include the "resumix." One complication of the federal hiring process is that the resume used for federal employment is not the same as the resume used to obtain civilian employment. This book shows real examples of effective federal resumes and the "resumix" which worked for real people. This book will do a great deal to make the federal hiring process understandable as it illuminates one of the most complex features of getting a government job: writing the federal resume or "resumix."
Customer Reviews:
Civilian to Government, NOT, Military to Government.......2007-01-12
Many fine examples of civilian to government type resumes. Some with limited amount of "miltiary experience" information included. But, as a veteran, I didn't feel this book provided much guidance for a military to government type resumix resume.

Book Description
In 1871-1882 fifty Americans, along with other foreign experts, were employed by the Japanese government to develop Japan's northern frontier, Hokkaido. Their work covered a wide scope of activities, from introducing Western agriculture and industry, constructing roads and a railroad, and surveying topography and mines, to establishing an agricultural college. While examining the overall undertaking, Professor Fujita specifically focuses on the prominent members who left copious private and public records. She thoroughly examines their ideas as well as their attitudes toward an alien culture. At the same time, she shows the Japanese responses to these experts and their alien culture. This is the first booklength examination of a development project that, in many ways, approaches some of the twentieth century undertakings in scope and complexity. As such, it will be of interest to students and scholars of inter-cultural relations, and Japanese and American nineteenth-century history.

Book Description
The Swiss Family Perelman is the hilarious and unforgettable account of the master humorist Perelman's trip around the world with his wife, son, daughter, and a cello. This collection of stories, originally published in Holiday in the late 1940s, is jam-packed with Perelman's signature wit and extraordinary prose style. (6 X 9, 224 pages, illustrations)
Customer Reviews:
Buy this book!.......2000-09-18
Like most of the other stuff from the master, if you have a yen for humor with brains, please, please buy this book. A columnist for the New Yorker, screenplay writer for the Marx Brothers, humorist par excellence - do you need more reasons? How about the fact that he makes most other humorists look like college boys indulging in frat-house antics...
Buy and enjoy! And then, buy the rest of his oeuvre!!
My favorite travel book ever.......2000-01-30
Hilarious account of the year legendary humorist S. J. Perelman took his family (wife and two mid-sized children) on a trip around the world. A follow-up to the equally delightful "Westward, Ha!", his similar trip with illustrator Al Hirschfeld. They travel the South Seas and Asia, the Middle East and all over Europe, accumulating ever larger piles of impedimentia.
Every sentence sparkles with Perelman's unique and exquisite brand of "airy persiflage" (reassuring a threatening official of a tyranical oil company: "No muckraker I, I nervously assured him, but a vapid little tomtit writing elegiacs about temple bells and lepidoptera"). Not only funny, but a very interesting look at a the state of the world still readjusting itself from WWII. Heartily recommended.

Book Description
Following in the footsteps of its successful predecessor, this new edition introduces the basic tenets of music theory and partwriting skills. A new design features visually striking pedagogical aids, allowing students to progress through ever-more challenging exercises at their own pace or to dip into the text at any point to brush up on specific skills. The authors have retained the self-instructional format of the previous two editions, with tests at the end of each part, while adding new quizzes at the end of each set and a cumulative test for Parts One through Six. Numerous examples from the music literature-a new feature of this edition-reinforce the theoretical concepts covered in each set; an appended study anthology of ten complete pieces allows students to see how individual concepts are woven into the fabric of a composition. The companion CD, keyed to specific frames in each set, provides immediate aural reinforcement.
Customer Reviews:
Unfortunate Revision.......2007-02-28
The previous edition of this book was set up in such a manner that the pages on the left side of the book were upside down. You would work through the book one way and then flip it over to work through the other way. Since you use a little card to cover up the answers on one side of the page it made it very easy to work quickly and drill yourself without revealing the answers until you needed them.
This edition while retaining the division of the page between answers and questions puts the instructions and information on the full page and is printed 'normally'. It takes a great deal more effort than the last edition to situate the card over the answers and you are constantly forced to remove it to read the instructions. A quick glance is all that is needed to come to ruin questions for drills. Also you have to write along the middle hump of the book which was not necessary in the previous revision due to everything being on the right side of the right page.
I am disappointed that they changed such a useful book and made it so cumbersome and poorly thought out. I would recommend tracking down a used (but unmarked) copy of the last edition as none of the information has really changed inside the book.
review of Programmed Course in MusicTheory by J. Clough.......2005-08-03
The information is laid out in a nice step-wise way. Repititions make it easy to assimilate the material. I am confident that working my way through the material will help me understand the music that I enjoy playing.
Great for homeschool moms with some music background........2004-07-07
I have a degree in music performance and have used this book successfully many times with my fellow homeschool moms and their kids. In private lessons and in more formal group settings this book has been most helpful, even with those who have had no musical background at all. Children from age 10 to 18 have learned the lessons from *cover to cover* with weekly instruction over the course of a year with me.
Additionally, once the lessons were completed we moved into sight-singing and ear training books (also from the Norton editions) and early part-writing. I feel that this book is actually better organized than the texts used in the theory classes at my conservatory (it was published after I graduated). There are some typos in the text and I would prefer that the answers were not quite so readily accessible(you might feel differently though), but other than that, I highly recommend this text.
Still the best programmed music theory text.......2002-01-28
The latest edition of this book has lost much of the classical simplicity and directness that made the previous editions so successful. Ugly icons crowd the page, statements are watered down, but still the text is far clearer than the other popular programmed text by Harder & Steinke. A student considering entering a conservatory or music school would be well prepared having worked through this book.
I'm dissapointed to see Norton's changes, and the increase in price, but I still recommend this text--it still is the best self-instruction program out there.
A very good book.......2001-01-26
I bought this book to brush up on my theory before returning to school for a 2nd undergrad degree in music, and I think it's helpful for three reasons. First, I've made it through the first 4 parts with relative ease, but I've also picked up enough tidbits of information to make it really useful. (I always knew how to play a major triad but never thought of the fact that it's made up of two 3rds, a major under a minor, or that a minor chord is a minor under a major.) Second, it is forcing me to memorize things like key signatures for minor keys, which I used to figure out by thinking of the relative major key. (That takes enough extra time to make it awkward at an audition.) Finally, it is a workbook, so you are expected to write the answers right in the book. It helps me to remember when I have to take the time to write the answer down, rather than just thinking of it. I haven't complete the entire book yet, but I know I'm just getting into the things I don't know!
All in all it is helping me to combine my practical performance knowledge with the reasons "why". I'm sure that understanding will lead to better performances.

Inventing Tom Thomson.......2005-02-12
This 234-page book gathers its material from the few biographies and semi-fictional novels about the life and death of one of Canada's greatest artists, Tom Thomson, who drowned in Ontario's Algonquin Park in 1917. She makes no great effort to sort out fact from fiction but rather uses what she finds to argue that Thomson's story is inextricable from the how the nation came to embrace woodsman-artist Thomson, as brother, colleague and discoverer of the nation's spirit.

Solidworks 2005.......2006-07-30
To ALL,
As a long time Autodesk user, I recently started using Solidworks, I am self-training myself and with the help of this book, I have a better idea of what makes SW tick. The book paid for itself in the first 5 minutes when I found the helix command that had a tutorial on making springs with hooked ends.
I highly recommend this book for everyone who is starting out in Solidworks. Very easy to read and understand, the layout is well thought out and will enhance your learning experience.
After reading 2 chapters.......2006-07-25
I have been a solidworks user for over a year. In just reading the first 2 chapters I picked up tips that were never taught in classes and helped improve my speed. I will review this again after I am further along.
The only drawback to this book so far is the annoying misspellings, and very WRONG use of English sentence structure- which makes yor mind hit a brick wall every time you catch one. I wonder who the editor was?
Slow starting but decent examples and a good teaching resource.......2006-03-16
I am an experienced SolidWorks user who was looking for supplemental information to build my knowledge base and help me prepare classroom material. This manual starts rather slow (4 chapters of sketching) but in the end, the information you need to create basic SolidWorks models etc. is there. CAD-CIM provides additional teaching resources which have saved me some prep time. (These resources have to requested separately) The only real disappointment is that there is no information on advanced features such as surface modeling included.
Excellent tutorials.......2005-10-25
Excellent tutorials for new users as well as existing users. Theory is good too, but you need more time to read thru the commands. Reading only tutorials can teach you everything about SolidWorks. Theory can be used for reference. Learning objectives on the first page of chapters give quick view on what is discussed in that chapter. I give a very positive rating to this book.
A well explained textbook a begginer on this software can choose.......2005-10-21
The step by step procedure involved in writing this textbook interestingly guides the user into the usage of tools and commands. The format and method adopted for writing this textbook is simple and easy to understand. This holds good for the beginers. This textbook can also be used as a reference guide for the basic tools that are discussed from the software.

An alternative reference to the countries of our planet
12th Biennial Edition
The World Guide has earned its place among the essential reference works that no library, school or home can be without. Not only is it highly informative, with easy-access alphabetical listings of all countries and a wealth of information unavailable elsewhere, but The World Guide also has the advantage of being produced by a research organization based in Latin America with a network of contributors from around the Third World. The book is an invaluable key to understanding global issues, as well as a definitive guide to the countries of the world. It provides everything you will find in a conventional reference work, including maps, data and statistical tables, plus a great deal more.
There are more than 600 pages of global information, with over 250 maps, 650 diagrams, 10,000 references and full index, plus a fold-out full-colour world map. The book divides into 85 pages on development themes, followed by 520 pages of country-by-country information. The final section include a bibliography and 'The Whole World in Figures' - an essential set of global indicators.

seems distorted by misunderstood patriotism.
For example, the top spot got assigned to Edison,
for some quite nonobvious reason. Sure, Edison was a fine
inventor, but even during his lifetime there were non-US
inventors whose inventions had greater impact than Edison's.
And to let him preside over the entire millennium will really
seem like the most amazing stretch of patriotism, at least to foreigners.
The unsuspecting reader is left with the impression that
Edison was the most important contributor to the light
bulb, although he was just one of those who improved it.
Goebel invented the first true light bulb in 1854,
Woodward and Evans patented one in 1875, Swan built one
with carbon filament in 1878, and Edison purchased the
1875 patent and had a team of co-workers try
many alternative materials until
they were able to prolong the burning time in 1879.
Likewise, most of Edison's numerous other patents
were just improvements of older inventions (exception:
the grammophone). Moreover, even the 19th century (leave
allone the entire millennium) saw greater
inventions than the light bulb or the grammophone, e.g,
gasoline engine and car (Benz; note that it is the car
industry that became the TwenCen's dominant industry,
not the light bulb industry), or the dynamo for making
electricity (Siemens), or the electric motor (Faraday).
Other contemporaries whose impact exceeded Edison's
include Darwin (evolution theory) and Haber (artificial
fertilizer, most influential TwenCen invention according
to NATURE, July 1999, p.415: increasing the world's
population from 1.6 to 6 billion).
Similarly, the Wright bros got the #20 spot, while
the first human flights (France, 18th century) and
the first powered heavier-than-air flight (Ader, 1890)
are not even mentioned. Even Lilienthal does not appear
in the top 100, although he performed 2500 flights
long before the Wrights.
I guess the main problem with the book is that
patriotic inaccuracies and overstatements
invalidate and actually ridicule the entire top 100 list.
A positive note: at least the top 10 event list does not seem
unreasonable, topped by bookprint (Gutenberg re-invented
this Chinese technology and thus started the Western
information age), steam engine (start of the industrial
revolution; Watt improved the previous models),
Protestantism (only major new religion of the past
1000 years), and the discovery of the New World
(Columbus, 1492).
But given this more or less convincing event
list it comes as an even greater surprise to see
one of several influential 19th century inventors
placed ahead of truly influential giants such as Gutenberg
and Watt and Luther and Newton and Einstein and Columbus.
I think it is fair to say that no decent round of experts
(say, an international group of history professors) would
place Edison anywhere near the top 30.
Anyway, the book is an interesting documentation of a
particular world view, and does contain edifying
information. I give it two stars.
Extremely fair treatment.......2000-01-12
This is the fairest treatment of the events of the past millennium that I have seen. Who would have thought of the germ theory of disease being important? They did and its in the book. Buy it.
great images, surprisingly good ideas.......1999-05-12
I bought this book in a hurry, just for the imagery. However, later, when I had a chance to actually read it, I was pleasantly surprised. It is a quite intelligent and creative summation of the past 1000 years. Although it hits all the usual highlights, this book rises above the Time-Life standard, sinking neither into sentimentality nor into thoughtless platitudes. I would recommend this book to people who are building image collections. Additionally (and I mean this in the best possible sense), this is the kind of book that should be in doctors' waiting rooms: it can be read in fits and spurts, and is a smart picture book. It might also reengage a middle-schooler who has gone off socail studies.
