Customer Reviews:
Excellent Text and Reference.......2006-02-12
This book addresses what is arguably the most critical area in running any organization today. Without the right people on the team, employers will confront one costly problem after another. Bringing the best people on board the right way can make a tremendous difference in an organization's success. The answers await you in these pages.
As a reader of this review, you should know that I am a Certified Management Consultant who specializes in workforce and workplace issues. I am very much involved in the subjects addressed in this book and stay current in the field. I do not know the author.
I was impressed with the comprehensiveness and timeliness of this book's content. Looking with a critical eye, I found very little to change or add. The vital topics are well-covered, and the few things I may have added are not essential to the human resources practices involved in bringing the right people into organizations the right way.
Readers can gain a considerable amount of valuable knowledge reading this book from cover to cover. In fact, I would encourage business students at the graduate or undergraduate level to read this volume and become comfortable with the abundance of knowledge and wisdom offered in these pages. That said, this book will stand as an easy-to-use reference resource for human resource professionals and senior line managers and executives
The book is well-written, using language that makes it easy to read and easy to use. The 15 high-content chapters are supplemented by eight appendices providing forms for use in the recruiting-hiring process. The text includes guidelines, questions and scripts for interviews, checklists, and focused explanations. Summaries at the end of each chapter are followed by end-notes that will enable the reader to dig even deeper into a specific subject in the rare event that the chapter presentation hasn't covered it enough.
As you might expect, the Fourth (2006) Edition is current down to Sarbanes-Oxley and the latest in on-line recruiting. I'm often skeptical of books that carry the higher prices-this one is $49.95, but in this case I have no problem validating the cost-benefit of investing that kind of money...and probably a lot more.
A word to seasoned human resource professionals who think they have most-if not all-of the answers because they've been working in the field since it was called "Personnel:" You need this book. It's current, it's deep, and it's comprehensive. If you have not seen the previous editions, you will be blown away by the power of this book. Your incredibly busy schedule not withstanding, you'll find yourself investing time reading what Diane Arthur has to share about what's happening right now in your field.
A road map for HR practitioners.......2001-05-01
Diane Arthur's 'Recruiting, Interviewing, Selecting & Orienting New Employees' is a must read! As she writes, "Recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and orienting new employees are specific skills. How well you practice these skills can directly affect many common organizational problems, such as turnover, employee morale, and absenteeism. By carefully implementing the methods described in this book, your organization can greatly improve its employer-employee relations and its level of productivity."
With revised, updated and newly added chapters, this book is a resource full of practical, straightforward samples and explanations of what works and doesn't work.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommend.......2007-05-19
Irish flute and whistle style is sometimes difficult to explain, even face to face with an instrument in-hand. Grey Larsen has managed to do it in a book. The Essential Guide is thick and a bit overwhelming at first glance, but it is well organized and can be tackled one chapter at a time. It is a complete treatment of Irish style and ornamentation, incuding correct rhythms and very effective fingerings. Larsen has explained intricate techniques like double-cut rolls and crans clearly and effectively. He has also written chapters on articulation, breathing, and even on how to translate Irish techniqus to silver flute. If you're only going to buy one book on Irish flute and whistle, this should be it.
The Bedrock of Instruction in the Irish-Style Flute.......2006-08-29
This is one of the finest books of musical instruction for any instrument that I have ever read. Grey starts the book with the assumption that the reader knows next to nothing about the Irish style flute and its traditions. Layer by layer he inculcates you into the playing style and the musical heritage of Irish pipers and flutists. He has developed a logical, comprehensive notation system showing the learner how to accurately reproduce the rapid fluttering ornamentations used by Irish pipers/flutists/pennywhistlers. Virtually every aspect of making music with a wooden flute (or pennywhistle) is covered, including ergonomic hand and body positioning, musical breathing, fingering exercises, but mostly how to get THE SOUND of that gorgeous instrument, the Irish-style flute. Grey is a keen observer and analyst who apparently compiled notes for years in order to write this book. This is a labor of love from a great teacher and performer. It will be the foundation of instruction for Irish style flutists for many, many years to come.
The Complete and Essential Tin Whistle books.......2004-09-12
They are both very good books but not really aimed at a complete beginner. These are more for someone who is trying to build a better foundation to their basic playing. Especially if you are trying to undestand ornamentation. These books have very good clear explanations and plenty of exercises to practise them.
If you buy the Essential Guide then you do not really need to buy the Essential Toolbox as most of it is contained in the Essential Guide.
It does deserve 5 stars but..........2004-09-01
...it probably isn't the book to start out with. That's not to say it doesn't have alot to teach because it does. There are lots of exercises and runs and they are on the 2 cds as well. I think you may want to have played a few months before getting this book. There's another book put out just after this one that seems the better one to start with. That is the Tin Whistle Toolbox book. This book here though, the Essential Guide..., has over 30 songs at the end, also on one of the cds, and these are great to learn and play. Some are played on the Irish Flute, which is an octave lower than the tin whistle and not easy to play. What is a little easier is the low whistle which is essentially an Irish flute with a whistle attachment so it's not hard to produce a tone but it is more difficult to play than the regular whistle. It's kind of funny because some of the tunes as I mentioned are played in this octave lower form and so are some of the exercises, and just at random. This is ok though if you have a hankering to play the Irish Flute or Low Whistle because you can get a feel for how they'll sound on these. Since they are an octave lower they are also easily relatable to the regular whistle. There are a couple of good chapters in the book on the Irish Flute specifically related to technique. There's hardly a mention of the Low Whistle so if you're thinking of getting into that check out another book just on the Low Whistle. There is one I see on Amazon if you type in Low Whistle. It also has a cd. Getting back to the Tinwhistle Toolbox book. It's supposed to have more exercises suited for beginners and although it has parts of tunes, for an extra $15.00 you can buy a third book with all 18 tunes complete that are only excerpted in the Toolbox book. Yikes! There's a Teach Yourself Pennywhistle set with a book cd and video if you search in VHS on the Amazon site that's really good if you're just starting out and the Tinwhistle Tunebook by L.E. McCullough has 4 cds and over 100 tunes that are great for learning and for experienced players as well. This is a better bang for your buck than The Essential Guide. That said The Essential Guide is quite a book and if they lower the price or you get it thru a second party seller for less you may well want to get it.
Excellent, and not just for fluters.......2004-03-09
The first few chapters, in which Larsen covers the basics of Irish traditional music, are required reading for anyone wanting to participate in this musical culture, especially if not born into it. The rest of the book is a must have for fluters and whistlers, and will also prove extremely helpful to Uilleann pipers. There hasn't been as thorough an examination of how Irish music works, from any perspective. He introduces a new, clear way of notating tunes that will become the standard. As technical and scholarly as the content is, Larsen is never dry or academic. The two CDs are an added bonus.

Customer Reviews:
Game is no longer available online.......2004-09-06
Amazon really needs to get rid of this listing this game hasnt even been available for over a year already. Thus making the book completely pointly.
It was pointless before that anyways.
for beginners only.......2002-11-05
I bought this book after having played the game for about a week and a half. In that week in a half I had already learned most of everything in the book. Unless you're just a total newbie to cars I wouldn't suggest buying this one. You'll do just fine diving right into the game. Most of the info is out of date and it doesnt even cover the rare cars and parts in the game which is one of the main reasons I bought it.
A good guide.......2002-05-16
I found the guide to be extremely helpful. I'm not a big car part expert, and I found the explanations and tips to be very helpful.
There's good info on the tracks, and a lot more info in the guide.
A few of the tips are out of date, but it's an online game, and constantly being updated. But - it does a great job on the basics to get you going.
A good read.

Waste of Paper.......2002-03-29
Don't bother with this one, it's full of insultingly obvious information. It basically doesn't help you at all, it just says to set up your car the way that works best for you, and keep it that way, yet it offers no advice on how to do so.
This book doesn't mention some important issues in the game (rare parts, rare cars), and is completely WRONG on others...(ie: it says your might accidentally buy damaged parts in auctions...ALL the parts in the auctions are NEW)
If you play the game for more than 1 hour, you'll know more than this book could ever teach you.

Book Description
Treating Bismarck as a man of his time, the author surveys his political policy and actions as well as investigating the psychology of a man whose life and achievements continue to be a source of controversy.
Customer Reviews:
I love these types of books........2007-09-22
I really love books like this one. Now this book may not be the definitive, authoritative biography of Bismarck and it certainly leaves out some key points, but the book is only 288 pages. The book is not supposed to be the definitive work on Bismarck's life. I don't see how someone could pick up a book that is less than 300 pages and think that it will have everything they need to know about one of the greatest politicians the world has ever seen.
So why do I like this book enough to give it five stars? The book is very well written and Mr. Taylor has a nice style so the book is entertaining and easy to read. It is also filled with very good information and, for its size, the book does a very good job hitting the major highlights of a very important historical figure. I think the book does a fantastic job giving the reader a lot of information for the pages read.
I really like these short, well written books on history. They make reading about a topic that is outside one's course of study or interest accessible. The relative small size of the book means it isn't as intimidating as other works and hopefully gives the book a wider audience.
The main thing is know what you're buying here and you won't be disappointed. You cannot get a definitive biography of Bismarck into 300 pages or less, but you can get a really good book that is informative and fun to read. I really liked this book and I think others will enjoy it as well.
Bismarck , Europe and Politics in general.......2006-04-15
Bismarck may be read by high school students, housewives and educated men and women...A.J.P Taylor wrote to several audiences at once. So I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a well written book and wants learn about the facts of Bismarck's accomplishments. Furthermore "Bismarck" is a great example of what politicians do and say. The Difference between what constituents want to hear and what great politicians actually do. Examples are when British politicians make anti-Euro currency declarations in order to gain votes, while at the same time quietly adopting European integration measures. Conversely Italian politicians agreeing quickly to sound pro-European Integration, while all the while in practice stalling every European integration measure so as not to loose voters. This book is a great introduction into Parliamentary and extra parliamentary manoevuring, the basics on Right,Center,Left and the Grand coalition,or all party initiatives for US readers.
Summing up,Bismarck is a pre-requisite to understand European politics and history as well as great lessons in practical politics.
Great History Book.......2006-03-04
Entertaining to a fault, Taylor's book is more of a history book with a very Bismarck and German slant then a strict autobiography. It is an easy read and gives one a really good sense of what was going on at the time.
Bismarck as only Taylor can write him.......2006-02-25
Taylor's thesis is not meant to be an all inclusive telling of Bismarck's life from beginning to end; rather it highlights the most important events which made him famous, often notorious. As with The Second World War, Taylor takes a controversial stance in presenting his topic in order to disclaim the common misperceptions of Bismarck as a warmonger and tyrant bent on German dominance. By using reliable first-hand sources, Taylor shows how Bismarck often opted to go against popular opinion to assure peace in Europe. While this may sound entirely contradictory to contemporary historical record, Taylor does show how every goal set and made by Bismarck was ultimately to his advantage.
Taylor's Bismarck is a concise look at arguably the most influential statesman in Germany if not the world. No noticeable bias is present in Taylor's portrayal of Bismarck as he shows strength and weakness, success and failure in equal portions. While it is not all inclusive and is written for an audience with a certain level of prior knowledge of 19th Century German history, Bismarck is well composed, easy to follow and educational.
Great Statesman is Really Ordinary Guy.......2005-03-24
This is a remarkable book of history. I was surprised to find myself reading it from cover to cover. Usually I read a book like this for a while, read a mystery or adventure or science fiction, then read some more, but not this time. While I am not up on my German history and this book expects some knowledge to be had, it was still very interesting. At times you feel that the author is an apologist for Count Von Bismarck, but other times, you can see he is just giving a true to life account, warts and all. Count Bismarck may need someone to apologize for his excesses, because he would not do it, and because he was a very great man, who should be remembered for his greatness.
The politics of the day are a bit hard to understand for me (I just do not understand why certain wars are fought or not: why were the Balkans so important to Austria-Hungary? Was it defensive? Was it land and people power (income from the farms and woodlands, etc.)? Was it social, id est, families and clans fighting for each other?), but to read about the philosophical and personal interplay of Count Von Bismarck and the other heads of state, brings to life some of the challenges the politics of the day. It also brought to light the real start of the German Federation. No one ever taught me that Germany was not a country before because it was like the United States before the constitution was adopted, as opposed to France or England, who had royalty overseeing the whole of the country. It is no wonder it did not have colonies before 1860 or so.
Book Description
"Politics is the art of the possible," Otto Von Bismarck famously said, and here, in his own words, the art of politics is laid bare by one of the most prominent and influential European statesmen of the nineteenth century. These are the intimate reflections and reminiscences of the man who unified the independent Germanic states into one nation, and whose subsequent promotion of the new country's colonial ambitions earned him the title of the founder of the German empire. This first volume of what must be considered an essential historical document details Bismarck's early life, from the political views of his youth and his entrance into public life through his work in government ministries and his time at the Court of Munich. It is vital reading for any informed, in-depth understanding of modern European history. AUTHOR BIO: OTTO EDUARD LEOPOLD VON BISMARCK (1815-1898) was born into a family that had belonged to the nobility from the fourteenth century. He studied law at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin, and later served as prime minister of Prussia, from 1862 to 1873, and as Germany's first chancellor, from 1871 to 1890.
Customer Reviews:
A very important part of German history.......2007-04-21
This is the largest collection of Bismarck's writings in English. A very useful guide to understanding German history. You might want to check out my list on German history to learn more.

Book Description
One of the major concentrated activities of the past decade in control theory has been the development of the so-called 'H-infinity-optimal control theory', which addresses the issue of worst-case controller design for linear plants subject to unknown disturbances and plant uncertainties.
This second edition features a more streamlined presentation of the results included in the first edition and also contains substantial new material, reflecting new developments in the field since 1991. Among these are the nonlinear theory; connections between H-infinity-optimal control and risk sensitive stochastic control problems; H-infinity filtering for linear and nonlinear systems; and robustness considerations in the presence of regular and singular perturbations. Also included are a rather detailed description of the relationship between frequency-and time-domain approaches to robust controller design, and a complete set of results on the existence of value and characterization of optimal policies in finite- and infinite-horizon LQ differential games.
The authors believe that the theory is now at a stage where it can easily be incorporated into a second-level graduate course in a control curriculum, that would follow a basic course in linear control theory covering LQ and LQG designs.
