With the introduction of new production methods and technological innovation, tradesmen and workers encountered new challenges. This study examines the development of trade unions as a manifestation of working class experience in late Gilded Age America. It underscores both the distinctive and the common features of trade unionism across four occupations: building tradesmen, cigar makers, garment workers, and printers. While reactions differed, the unions representing these workers displayed a convergence in their strategic orientation, programmatic emphasis and organizational modus operandi. As such, they were not disparate organizations, concerned only with sectional interests, but participants in an organizational-network in which cooperation and solidarity became benchmarks for the labor movement. Printers coped with the mechanization of typesetting by promoting greater cooperation among the different craft unions within the industry, with the aim of establishing effective job control. Building tradesmen exerted a pragmatic militancy, which combined strikes with overtures to the employers' business sense, to uphold the standards of craft labor. Cigar makers, especially handicraftsmen who found their position threatened by machinery and the growth of factory production, debated the merits of a craft-based union against the possible advantages of an industrial-oriented organization. Garment workers, caught in the snare of a sweating system of labor in which wages and work loads were inversely related, organized unions to mount strikes during the busy season in the hope of securing higher wages, only to see them whither in the midst of slack periods.

Lots of experience went into this book. I will use it for my guide on the road. Only thing, I wish the author would have covered more of the angles and pit falls of the business of gigging - the agent(s), recording studios, venue owners, and lawyers - only his personal experience; not other road-rat wisdom (in dealing with scams and dead-beats). The author should keep writing new editions of this publications (the music changes in shady colors?). I give the book 4 stars, minus one star for its lack of comprehensiveness.

I'm only about 3.5 chapters into this book and to me it's the best book on getting the business end of a music career I have ever come across. I have a stack of music business books about yea high and they are mostly very good, but Hal's is far and away the top gun. He not only demonstrates the logistics of getting a band started, how to ask a club/venue booker for gigs, how to set up the money end, but he also looks at the inner psychology of what it takes to be a touring/performing musician, and does it so that all the hard work you take on looks manageable. Not only is this a good book for entry or mid-level musicians, it's a great read for ANYBODY who would want to start his or her own business. Sometimes it's a little dry and hard to read, but the information it contains is so valuable I don't mind at all. I highly recommend this book from a "road rat" who has been there and done that.

The Best Book on Constructing.......2005-09-08

It is possible to learn to construct crossword puzzles without The Random House Puzzlemaker's Handbook, but you will save a lot of time and effort by reading this book first.

While other books (by William Sunners and Helene Hovanec, to mention two) cover much of the same territory as The Random House Puzzlemaker's Handbook, Rosen and Kurzban present the information in a clear, step-by-step format that takes you from the history of crosswords to constructing your own simple puzzles, to how to submit for publication. There are exercises and templates, as well.

The book is a little out of date when it comes to markets, since it was published in 1995 and is now out of print with no prospect (at the moment) of a new edition. And the technology has left them behind, too, with nearly every professional constructor using software such as Crossword Compiler. But the rules of the crossword game haven't changed, or the strategies to use when your software has done all it can and you have to come up with that last corner.

The Random House Puzzlemaker's Handbook also includes chapters on constructing diagramless puzzles and cryptic crosswords, as well as excellent instructions on making acrostic puzzles.

If you can't see paying the going price for this out-of-print and hard-to-find book, maybe you can find it at the library, or even through inter-library loan. It's well worth the wait.

This is a great quick way to understand the basic functions of the various nodes in shake esp when you are new to the software. If you want to dig through the 1000 page user manual when your learning the basics, go ahead, but if you to cut the fat and get a basic understanding this book is right for you.

An expensive but necessary little book. There's really nothing else on the market that shows expanded views of the (deep, very deep) Shake interface. Damian Allen ought to be commended for so clearly mentioning on page 3 how the Unix-based browser and $HOME works. I couldn't find my desktop in Shake till he explained it and had nobody to ask. Thanks! Looking forward to Allen's next Pro Training volume.

Shake is very full of tools and this book will help you in production line but remember this is quick-reference that some helper very shot and many picts and texts too small. Quality of print are drop in many pages, I think publisher should redesign layout of this book.

Before the light pollution of the late twentieth-century, the stars and constellations were a fairly common part of western knowledge, and the ability to navigate by the stars was a universal skill. Much of that skill and knowledge is all but lost to the larger section of western society.

This book helps to reconnect with the environment without the use of portable electronic devices.

I was able to learn the "6 Constellations, 4 Stars, A Planet, A Galaxy, And How To Navigate At Night" (Okay, I already knew the big and little dippers and Polaris...so I had a head start.)

If you are curious about the stars and constellations, there is no easier way to learn them.

What a wonderful book!!! My husband borrowed this book from a friend and after one night of use, we bought it. It is amazing how quickly you can learn the stars and constellations. They were not kidding when they said it only takes an hour...we are proof, at age 60, that it can be done!! Buy it, you won't be disappointed. Also great for kids

I just returned from a sailing holiday in the Florida Keys and took Stikky Night Skies with me - The book is fantastic. The first evening out under the stars I was able to lead a pretty comprehensive tour of the night sky from the cockpit.

I had read the reviews that mention a problem with the binding but had no problems. In correspondence with the publisher they explained that an earlier print run had been problematic which has now been fully resolved.

For anyone who has a copy with a binding issue they can be reached through their own web site Stikky Dot Com. They will happily replace any title with the a binding issue a per the guarantee on the back cover.

I highly commend this title to lovers of the outdoors, campers and sailors alike.

Easy way to learn to recognize constellations.......2004-02-25

A simple but effective approach, "Stikky Night Skies" teaches the reader how to recognize six constellations, 4 major stars, a planet, and how to always determine north in the night sky. Besides showing the constellation pattern and describing how to recognize it the book contains multiple pages of actually night skies to practice on. After completing the book it is fairly simple to locate each of the constellations mentioned.

I did have one problem with the book. The gluing method used to attach the cover on my copy was of such poor quality that the cover came off with just one reading. Of course it can just be glued back on with good quality hot glue, but you would expect it to be of better quality from the beginning.

Other than this one caveat, if you want to know how to recognize a handful of constellations that you can use as a base to learn other ones, you can't go wrong with "Stikky Night Skies".

After all the reviews I read here I expected a lot more. Before I cover the content of this book let me tell you that the binding of this book is pittyful - it fell apart after the first indoor use. The printing quality appears to me like a cheap black and white newspaper print (no pictures or decent draws), just that the paper is somewhat thicker. The book consists only of black pages with wihte dots on it resembling stars. In one or two easy sentences on each page you are supposed to figure constellations. It works and in an hour you are about to find 5 or 6 constellations in the book.
But for whom is this book made for???
Little kids?- No, nothing is explained about stars, solar system, universe etc. Just to find a few constellations won't hold up a kids interest for very long.
The newbie astronomer? - NO. There is no explanation given to nothing. So it is not only that you know nothing about the basics of astronomy, it also fails to live up to it's own expectations. Most people will be surprised that they don't find the constellations they found so easily in the book. Thats because they've been told nothing about the seasonal constallations, the difference between the northern/southern hemisphere, no directions given where to find stuff, nothing about the rotation...
So here comes my personal guess what this book is good for:
If you wanna impress your girlfrind with your newly acquired skills and you want to take no effort... this is it. You just have to be lucky to be in the right place at the right time of the year ... and most importantly, she shouldn't ask any question like "What is this bright misty arc overhead?" , "Is a shooting star a fallen star?". Those questions will embarrasse you to nature, because you couldn't answer them from the content of this book.
Honestly again, get yourself T. Dickinson's "Nightwatch" and you will find all constallations easily and constantly at any time of the year. You will know the answers to all the questions an interested rookie might ask himself.
