Book Description
Ray Charles (1930-2004) led one of the most extraordinary lives of any popular musician. In Brother Ray, he tells his story in an inimitable and unsparing voice, from the chronicle of his musical development to his heroin addiction to his tangled romantic life. Overcoming poverty, blindness, the loss of his parents, and the pervasive racism of the era, Ray Charles was acclaimed worldwide as a genius by the age of thirty-two. By combining the influences of gospel, jazz, blues, and country music, he invented, almost single-handedly, what became known as soul. And throughout a career spanning more than a half century, Ray Charles remained in complete control of his life and his music, allowing nobody to tell him what he could and couldn't do. As the Chicago Sun-Times put it, Brother Ray is "candid, explicit, sometimes embarrassing, often hilarious, always warm, touching, and deeply human-just like his music."

Ray.......2006-11-10
The book is great and I am enjoying getting to know Ray through his words.
Oh yeah.......2006-08-27
"The most clear-eyed and honest celebrity autobiography I've read."
That back cover blurb, by somebody famous I've never heard of, is exactly right, including some details I'd probably omit from my own autobiography. What makes this book wonderful is, as you'd expect, Ray's voice. You've heard it in his music, and now you can read it in his book. I highly recommend it.
"Don't change a goddamn word!".......2006-05-05
David Ritz is a lucky man. In the course of his life he wrote autobiographies for Soul legends as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. These bios were the result of long and intimate conversations, a fan boy's dream come true. All these autobiographies are interesting not only for the lives they portray but also for the era they take place in. At the time these artists were at the height of there career America was changing. During the sixties when the civil rights movement reached its peak they had there biggest selling records and were pushing the boundaries of the genre they were operating in.
It is often argued that Ray Charles and artist like him played an important part in the civil rights movement. His records crossed over from R&B to Pop, allowing the white middleclass teenagers to be introduced to Black culture. Not everybody had the patience or commitment to go to a civil rights rally; everybody can enjoy a good piece of music. Not only did Ray cross over he wrote some new rules as well. Ray was one of the first to combine Jazz, Soul and Country, appealing to a very broad audience of all colors and dominations. Ray was as much appreciated by the college kids up north and the hillbillies down south. Ray integrated concerts and gave the black man a human face, which at the time it was sadly lacking in mainstream white America.
David Ritz describes his conversations as some of the most frank yet closed he's had throughout his career. Ray never left out the sordid details of his life; the drugs and infidelity is vividly portrait. All of it written down in raw language, Ray liked to swear! At times you forget Ray is blind as he describes the women in his life, "Man the things I've seen" he even exclaims when he talks about his nights of sex on the road. Yet he also found Ray lacking the capability to reflect on the why's in his life. In contrast to Marvin Gaye who thoroughly analyzed himself, Ray seemed to ride the current, act on instinct and gut, without asking why he made the decisions he made. We find Ray Charles claiming that he did drugs, drugs never did him. Ray tells us his music comes from his Soul, he sang it as he felt it. Inevitably it was his unwillingness or unable ness to reflect that made him such a robust performer. When David Ritz asked Ray a couple of years later if he wanted some revisions for a reprint Ray exclaimed "Don't change a goddamn word!".
The Genius of Soul Recounts His Life--In His Own Style.......2006-04-07
This is a very real, sometimes funny, sometimes bitter, sometimes poignant memoir from The Genius of Soul himself, of the first 45 or so years of his life. His frank, no-holds-barred style, frequent use of strong language, and free-living attitude toward drugs and sex may put some people off; but the book is well worth reading for his candid account of his upbringing influenced by two strong and loving women, learning to be independent and deal with his disability without self-pity, and his rise in the music business to a hugely successful career. I found it refreshing and enjoyable, because Ray put himself out to readers just the way he was-faults, charms, humor, strong feelings and powerful talent-and his story makes us want to remember what a blessing he was to the world. I wish he had written a follow-up of his later life.
interesting.......2006-04-05
I read this book after the movie "Ray" came out. I enjoyed the book a lot, but found there were a few things that he talks about that were portrayed differently in the movie, so I wondered which were true. I was a little surprised at how honest he is in the book about his womanizing and lack of interest in birth control or whether his casual encounters would result in contracting STD's. He was an amazing man and musician, and I admire his talent, but was a little disappointed at his lack of morals in a lot of cases. I wonder how his dear mama would have felt about it, if she had lived to see his adult life. The book is a great read and very insightful into Ray Charles's life, he leaves no stone unturned.

Book Description
“Storage Networks Explained has much to recommend it.
…a rarity in the literature of digital data storage – a complete exposition of both the base subject matter and its applications, which at the same time offers a level of readability making it suitable as an introduction to the subject. Storage Networks Explained is also flexible. It can be read cover-to-cover, browsed, or used as a reference. I recommend Storage Networks Explained as an essential component of any active information technology library.”
Paul Massiglia, Technical Director, VERITAS Software Corporation
Storage networks will become a basic technology like databases or local area networks. According to market research, 700f external storage devices will be connected via storage networks in 2003. The authors have hands-on experience of network storage hardware and software, they teach customers about concrete network storage products, they understand the concepts behind storage networks, and show customers how storage networks address their business needs.
Storage networks provide shared access to stored data from multiple computers and servers, thus increasing storage efficiency and availability. They permit information management functions such as backup and recovery, data mirroring, disaster recovery, and data migration to be performed quickly and efficiently, with a minimum of system overhead.
This book explains how to use storage networks to fix malfunctioning business processes, covering the technologies as well as applications. A hot topic that will become increasingly important in the coming years.
- One of the first books to focus on using rather than building storage networks, and how to solve problems.
- Looking beyond technology and showing the true benefits of storage networks.
- Covers fibre channel SAN, Network Attached Storage, iSCSI and InfiniBand technologies.
- Contains several case studies (e.g. the example of a travel portal, protecting a critical database)
- Endorsed by the Storage Networking Industry Association.
- Written by very experienced professionals who tailored the book specifically to meet customer needs including support with supplementry material on Troppens website and Preface written by Tony Clark.
Provides basic application information key for systems administrators, database administrators and managers who need to know about the networking aspects of their systems. As well as systems architects, network managers, information management directors and decision makers.
This book also supports applications for graduate students and other relevant courses in the field.

Warehouses are often seen as a necessary evil: places that stop the flow of goods and thus increase costs without adding value. But the truth is that they have a critical part to play in supply chain management, and warehouse managers should be centrally involved in the strategic aspects of any business. Excellence in Warehouse Management covers everything you need to know to manage warehouse operations as part of a streamlined and holistic system, fine-tuned to serve the customer and drive the bottom-line. With thinking points, self-assessment exercises and case studies Stuart Emmett challenges you to consider your own operations in a new way, and plot a course into the future.
Customer Reviews:
Good content, if somewhat dated, substandard translation.......2007-05-12
As a reader of Wiley books since my undergraduate days, many years ago, I have come to respect and enjoy their high quality, and have, over the years, purchased and recommended quite a few, both for the companies I've worked with and for my personal professional library.
It is therefore a deep disappointment for me to read "Storage Networks Explained", originally published in German, and translated to English in 2004.
My disappointment is not with the technical contents - the book was obviously written by experts in the field, and give a complete (if slightly dated) review of the field of storage networks. In terms of contents, my expectations are fulfilled. However, the translation of the book from the original was done in a sub-standard manner, resulting in an uncomfortable reading experience. All too often, my concentration was broken by having to re-read sentences and trying to understand what the original authors were trying to say in German, as the phrasing in English is awkward and unnatural at best, and ofter plainly wrong.
The information I needed was there, but getting it was made harder than necessary due to the poor translation and editing. A newer book that's up-to-date and even a bit better in terms of style and ease of reading will well-deservedly remainder all the copies of this work. Until such a book is out, non-German speakers who wish to get a decent overview of the field will have to struggle with this.
Best storage book in the market.......2006-11-09
Overall, this is the best storage book that you ever read .
Good overview of storage networking.......2006-02-13
This is one of the best books I've encountered in many years. What I like about it:
- Describes everything (using illustration) from file-systems and volume managers down to transport concepts like fibre channel, iSCSI, infiniband, VI
- Goes into concepts like mirroring, snapshots and other technologies in an easy to relate manner.
Despite the relatively high price, I give this book an A and would heartily recommend it. However this book is not for programmers or those intending to design things. Neither is it for sales/marketing folks who just want to know key buzzwords. Its more for technologists, CTOs and others interested in how things work with regards storage networking.
Succinct overview of Storage Networks.......2004-10-19
A very good translation of the german text. There are a few areas where the translation falters but overall excellent. This is not an implementation book. It's meant to be a general overview of the Storage Network universe. The authors focus on Fibre Channel SAN which is still dominant in large corporations and gaining popularity among mid level companies. The book does a good job of explaining the plus/minus of all the competing standards as well as giving an infrastructure map of each of the technology setups. If you want to understand the ABCs of Storage, your journey should start with this book.

Customer Reviews:
PRETTY GOOD.......2007-07-23
This book is gokay for introduction of Chemical Reactors and all that. However, I would highly recommend that you purchase a used one. It just not worth buying a new copy.
Worst Chem E book ever.......2003-11-15
I think this is the worest Chem E book ever. too bad its one of the only aviablable books for reaction engineering since levenspeil was the first to do alot of these things back in the 50s and 60s. there are numerous mistakes in every chapter. Be weary when using this book to study from.
A decent undergraduate book.......2001-06-26
CRE is not a bad book. The author does a good job of explaining reactor design fundamentals, from simple kinetic models to complex reactor systems involving heat/material transfer or multiple reaction contents. He lays the groundwork well early on be using simple, clear examples. There are numerous typos (mostly in the text, though, not the problems. The text itself is in large and legible type. In addition, the book is not overcrowded-like a lot of life science books-with meaningless pictures, text, history, etc (but it might take the boredom meter to a new level for some readers). Although not a big deal, Levenspiel uses some language that makes you kinda wonder what planet he came from. Also, the author puts all the variable nomenclature at the beginning of the book, which is really annoying because you have to flip back and forth until you memorize each character variable. Other than that, it should be adequate to get you through the course w/o a great deal of trouble.
Too detailed.......2001-01-18
As a final year undergraduate, I find that this book is fairly useless. Although the information is in there, it is nigh on impossible to find. It would probably be of use to someone who is working on research in that field, but to a student who has not yet done such detailed work, don't bother. Save your money and spend it on beer.
A good book at higher level.......2000-06-28
I used this book as a textbook in my undergraduate. In an undergraduate study, it is necessary to have new concepts explained to you in a unified manner so that ones sees where all the chemical engineering subjects are heading to. Chemical reaction engineering (CRE) basically deals with energy and material balance applied to chemical reactors to achieve a given purpose. The book tells you all the fundamentals about the chemical reaction engineering, the underlying principles but fails to draw this message straight that CRE is nothing but application of energy and material balance. And at undergraduate level, I could not draw this inference on my own and learned it in the graduate class when I took the advanced level course. The book also does not deal with the modern tools of solving reactor design problems with computers. We used Fogler's text book for first few classes in Graduate school. I would recommend this book which could be used as an undergraduate as well as graduate text/reference book. If you need to go to the earlier work and want to pursue research in this field, then Levenspiel is good as it has some original work references ( I believe this is an old book on CRE). Once you have the feel for the subject than the use of this book is undisputed. But if you are using this book to study CRE first time then I would recommend you use some good text book.
Additional comments 6 years later: I am currently using this books to solve some real industry problems and it has become clear to me how good this book is. Though I stick to my earlier comments which were written when I was fresh in to my graduate school for two reasons: how I felt about this book in my undergrad class and how much I learned from Fogler in Graduate level class. But Levenspiel does good justice to all the concepts in chemical reaction engineering and would definitely recommend it as a reference book. It provides many ways to analyze a chemical data and interpret it to determine the kinetics.
