Book Description
STARTING IN LIFE, first published in 1910, offers today's graduates an inside look at the professions they have to choose from. Surprisingly relevant, these profiles cover the sorts of tasks a reader might expect from the career, the sort of salary he might make, and the level of respect he might receive from the community. From acting to practicing law, working in the armed services to trading stocks and bonds, many of the professions listed in this classic volume are no different from those of this century.
Included in each chapter is advice from history's finest and most celebrated working men, including Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, Mark Twain, J. P. Morgan, Thomas Edison, George Dewey, and many others. Although there is a great deal of information to be found here, it's equally enjoyable to see how far we've come--women don't appear, and the writing is distinctly vintage: "In order to avoid failure, young people must have a strong start and the ability to recognize opportunity. In order to realize one's true ability, it is important to be in the right profession. The lazy boy, even though he may be a mechanical genius, would better keep away from railroading. The slow boy has no business in the railroad business; nor has the quick boy, if his rapidity is not under the control of dependable discretion."
Anyone who is "just starting in life" will want a copy of this clever tome.

Pretty Darned Funny.......2002-08-14
I picked this up on a whim at my local library. This is some pretty funny and surreal stuff-what comics are supposed to be about. It has a style that harkens back to the early days of comic strips where there were less hardfast rules. Forget about Dilbert and Garfield and especially the wretched Sally Forth and try and find a copy of Reid Fleming.

Book Description
Visions of Belonging explores how beloved and still-remembered family stories -- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I Remember Mama, Gentleman's Agreement, Death of a Salesman, Marty, and A Raisin in the Sun -- entered the popular imagination and shaped collective dreams in the postwar years and into the 1950s. These stories helped define widely shared conceptions of who counted as representative Americans and who could be recognized as belonging.
The book listens in as white and black authors and directors, readers and viewers reveal divergent, emotionally textured, and politically charged social visions. Their diverse perspectives provide a point of entry into an extraordinary time when the possibilities for social transformation seemed boundless. But changes were also fiercely contested, especially as the war's culture of unity receded in the resurgence of cold war anticommunism, and demands for racial equality were met with intensifying white resistance. Judith E. Smith traces the cultural trajectory of these family stories, as they circulated widely in bestselling paperbacks, hit movies, and popular drama on stage, radio, and television.
Visions of Belonging provides unusually close access to a vibrant conversation among white and black Americans about the boundaries between public life and family matters and the meanings of race and ethnicity. Would the new appearance of white working class ethnic characters expand Americans'understanding of democracy? Would these stories challenge the color line? How could these stories simultaneously show that black families belonged to the larger "family" of the nation while also representing the forms of danger and discriminations that excluded them from full citizenship? In the 1940s, war-driven challenges to racial and ethnic borderlines encouraged hesitant trespass against older notions of "normal." But by the end of the 1950s, the cold war cultural atmosphere discouraged probing of racial and social inequality and ultimately turned family stories into a comforting retreat from politics.
The book crosses disciplinary boundaries, suggesting a novel method for cultural history by probing the social history of literary, dramatic, and cinematic texts. Smith's innovative use of archival research sets authorial intent next to audience reception to show how both contribute to shaping the contested meanings of American belonging.

Java Examples in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell)
ASIN: 0596002831 |
Book Description
Java just keeps growing, adding features, functionality, complexity, and tempting developers to growl with frustration. The new 1.4 release of Java 2 Standard edition increases the size of the platform by 50%, to 2757 classes in 135 packages. How are you going to figure out what this means for your applications? As always, Java in a Nutshell has the answers. The new 4th edition still contains an accelerated introduction to the Java programming language and its key APIs so you can start writing code right away. And with more than 250 new pages, author David Flanagan quickly brings you up to speed on new features that come with version 1.4:
- High-performance NIO API
- Support for pattern matching with regular expressions
- A logging API
- A user preferences API
- New Collections classes
- An XML-based persistence mechanism for Java Beans
- Support for XML parsing using both the DOM and SAX APIs
- User authentication with the JAAS API
- Support for secure network connections using the SSL protocol
- Support for cryptography
The book contains O'Reilly's classic quick-reference for all the classes in the essential Java packages, so you can dive in and find what you need to make the new 1.4 version work for you. For as long as Java developers have existed, Java in a Nutshell has been ready, willing and able to take you right to the heart of the program, turning those frustrated grrrrss into purrrss of satisfaction. No wonder readers of Java Developer's Journal voted this the "Best Java Book" the past two years in a row!
Customer Reviews:
The best offline reference for Java.......2006-07-14
For those that find that Javadoc hard to read (like me) or aren't "always on" the internet, this is a great alternative. The first few chapters are particularly - short, sweet and to the point - a cross between Javadoc and a cookbook and is quite readable.
Decent yet lacking.......2005-03-23
Java: In a Nutshell (4th ed.) is a decent reference manual for quick lookups. Be forewarned: it's very terse. This helps and hurts it; the Java language is pretty hefty itself, so concise reference is valuable, however sometimes I've found it to be a little bit on the lacking side when I really needed fast and easily understandable reference.
Not a must-have, but definitely not a waste.
Way too terse to be useful.......2005-01-30
This book is way too terse to be useful. Modern Java development tools will help you use the correct class method signatures anyway. Buy the posters instead and give yourself a visual overview instead.
Best guide for the working programmer.......2004-07-02
This isn't a textbook. It's a handbook, and gives good, clear descriptions of every corner of the Java language. Java isn't a big feature-sodden language, but has a few obscure corners. If you just can't remember the syntax for up-reference from an inner class, you'll find it fast and explained well.
The API guide is fairly complete, but terse. Well, it has to be - the API keep growing. No one book could hold a complete description of everything. Sad to say, earlier editions had more complete API descriptions. The second, for example, had a very good introduction to reflection. As the Java API grew, however, the old descriptions had to shrink to make way for the new, and the reflection discussion was squeezed out. Still, it gives a good quick look at the API. This isn't as complete as the Javadoc API information, but is hugely more browseable. Use this to direct your query into the right area, then use Sun's Javadoc to get the details.
If you have room for only one Java book, make it this one.
-- wiredweird
2007 PS to the 2004 review: Flanagan's new edition on Java 5 supercedes this version of the classic. The new version has all the strengths of earlier editions. It covers language basics and Java 5 extensions even better, except for some rough spots in generics. It covers the fast-growing standard library even worse. If coding Java pays your paycheck, then upgrade. If you work on legacy or casual code, the 3rd or 4th edition, plus easy access to javadoc, might still serve you well enough.
I love my nutshell.......2004-06-11
I keep this book by my side and reference it at least twice a week. An integral part of my Java programmer's desktop library.

Book Description
In this work an endeavor has been made to supply the long felt want of a Hindu classical dictionary. The main portion of the work consists of mythology, but religion is bound up with mythology, and in many points the two are quite inseparable. The chief geographical names of the old writers have also received notice, and their localities and identifications are described so far as present knowledge extends. Short descriptions have been given of the most frequently mentioned Sanskrit books, but only of such books as are likely to be found in the works of European writers.

The Worst Book I Have ever Read........2007-01-15
The author of this book is a liar for one, and two he absolutely hates Americans and America. He is very bias and has nothing good to say about anybody in America, a history book should not be so prejudice.
Example: During the 50's Catholic churches would have English classes to teach Mexican immigrants English so that they could better themselves and get better jobs. The author accused them of trying to rape the Mexicans of there culture and assimilate them. How can you blast someone for trying to help?
Don't buy this book unless you have too as I did for a Class. I suggest Rain of Gold.
Mexicans have always been oppressed.......2004-08-28
R Acuña's treatise of Mexican Americans (now called Chicanos or Pochos) includes what many would call 'the Underside of American History' (search title). The fact is, America waged war against the Mexicans, using many of the same methods that we now accuse those of Iraq or Bosnia of using, and differs little from the 'ethnic cleansing or genocide of the modern world. In school, most US Americans are given a glossed-over summary of key US propaganda regarding the history lessons that politicians want people to know, rather than an objective, 'tell-it-like-it-is/was' history that encompasses true social responsibility.
The wars waged against the mostly poor mexican countrymen, living in Mexican territory, under siege from an offensive US American anglo army, parallel little of the 'good american' reputation widely distributed today. The author, in his extensive research, pulls up countless accounts of slaughter, rape, torture, mutilation, and abuse of mexican men, women, children, mostly incited as a sort of blood sport by American cavalry, enlisted men, volunteers, and associates, as well as the leveling of Mexican cities and towns just for target practice. To add to the war crimes, most of the Americans involved, even the command of Zachary Taylor, were never brought up on any charges, nor even in the most slightest way, reprimanded for their actions. Of course, if the truth were known by many, or the school kids of today taught the real truth, Perhaps people would have an entirely different view of what America Wants vs. what America will do to get it.
Great Basic Review of Chicana/o History.......2003-02-09
Mexicans, and for that matter People of Color in general, have occupied an important space/place in the labor force. Historical documents and current trends only serve to demonstrate that without Mexican labor, the development of agriculture, mining, construction (universities), railroads, and highways would have been considerably slowed to a crawl in the Southwest. Even if Mexicans are to be regarded as important or at least acknowledged to have had a presence in the Southwest, it has not been until the recent fifty years in which we have begun to see in depth scholarly work focused on the working classes--including Chicana/os.
Professor Acuña is able to provide some of the most basic underpinnings of Chicana/o History. This book provides basic information that can be used to supplement a teacher in providing a more thorough history of the United States in a strict standard based High School Course. Knowingly, if one is using this book at a level higher than high school or if it is the base of an ethnic studies, its use becomes of central importance due to its demonstration of injustices, experiences, and mediatory experiences of the Chicana/o community. Although Acuña has received criticisms for his usage of words/depictions in the trajectory of the Chicana/o experience, they are unfounded. The book tries to present experiences--experiences that decimated, raped, and destroyed Chicana/os as a community.
Additionally, take a look at the sources as a form of guidance towards more books and articles that can only serve to further knowledge and teaching material.
Furthermore, the amount of existing work and the topics that are being written about remains limited.
Occupied America.......2001-09-18
Every view that we will ever see about history is a view that is skewed by personal feelings. As historians, it is our job to figure out what is fact and what is feeling. This book may not be the most objective book about the history of the Xicano people, but it spoke to me in the same way that the Anglo child finds solace in the played out text books found in school. I relate to the stories that Acuna tells, and I enjoy his point of view. He is a wonderful historian, and worthy of being put in the same class as Zinn (A people's history of the U.S.) I hope you enjoy this book, and listen to the frustration in the writing. It is the key to the Chicano's history in a society where Anglo paradigms edit the truth.
Excellent, Scholarly, Objective.......2001-06-09
I am a PhD Candidate in Political Science at the Claremont Graduate University and found this book by Dr. Rodolfo Acuña excellent, objective and well researched. The only persons who would not like this book would be from the extreme right wing who do not like true history to be written.

Occupied America.......2006-05-01
Occupied America has evolved from my belief that the history of Chicanos in the United States must be reexamined. My framework has been the Chicano's struggle for liberation, for being a Chicano myself, I have experienced the inequities of this supposedly democratic society; I have seen that people of Mexican extraction in the United States are, in a very real sense, captives of a system that renders them second-class citizens. As a historian, I wanted to know what has happened in the last 124 years that has kept Chicanos at the short end of the proverbial stick. Traditional explanation of racism, nativism, and economic exploitation provided only a partial answer, in my opinion. Other groups have been the victims of such forces, but - with the obvious exceptions of the Indians and the Blacks - they have managed to achieve a degree of acceptance and self-determination far greater than that of Chicanos....
I have divided the material into two parts. The first concentrates primarily on the nineteenth century and the U.S. conquest of the Southwest, with separate chapters devoted to the four major states of the ares. The second part centers around the experiences of Chicanos in the twentieth century, beginning with attempts to restrict Mexican immigration and continuing to the 1970s and the growth of the movement.
