A pleasure to read this book. I listen to a classical music station which includes interesting facts about the musicians' private lives. One day a guest mentioned that she knew where the host was obtaining these interesting facts. So it is a secret no longer; it's this book. Lives of the Musicians is light reading with approx. 2 pages of facts per musician, so it is not an in-depth look at their private lives; however put it on your "Fun" reading list. Great musical resource!.......2007-03-12

My daughter has been studying piano for two years and she is fascinated by the people who score the compositions she learns to play. In school she learns about a different composer each month and always wants to know more when she comes home. She also has a love for anything historical. This book was a great addition to our reference collection because it reaches her on several levels. We happened to come across it at the library and, after reading a few entries, we decided we'd like to buy it. Lots of bookstores stocked the paperback edition, but only Amazon had the hardcover in stock. This is the kind of book you really want in hardcover so that young children can more easily flip through the pages and study the humorous illustrations.

The book includes entries on 20 musicians from a wide range of styles, backgrounds, and historical periods. The entries are engaging for adult readers, yet accessible for a younger audience. My daughter is six and was totally engrossed in the stories of Chopin, Mozart, Clara Schumann and others. I know we will come back to this book again and again.

This is a great book! My piano teacher checked it out from the library and loved it so much I had to buy her a copy! The illustrations are adorable and the bio's are so interesting. A lot of interesting stories that really give the great masters a very human quality! I love reading about the musicians that I'm currently playing! If you are into music and want to know just how human they really were this is a great book!

My daughter's piano teacher gave her the assignment to read about Mozart as she started her first Mozart Minuet. My daughter was 7 at the time, and although she was reading at above 3rd grade level, I was shocked to find that there was NOTHING available on the internet or in her school library that give her information on composers at HER level. I finally found "Lives of the Musicians" and have actually purchased the book. It's just that good. She is able to read about each composer (for the most part the language is about her level, although she DOES need help with some of the words), and each section is engaging enough to keep her attention.

This book is a must for anyone with a child that wants or is assigned to learn about the great composers.

I'm an alumna of the University of Illinois, and was never very comfortable with the concept of "Chief Illiniwek." But I had no idea the role that Indian sports mascots have had in obscuring and distorting both the history and current status of Native peoples. Spindel's book examines the unique nexus of the history of Native peoples, football, the Big Ten, land grant universities, anthropology, wild west shows and photography, among others. In a careful and quiet way, she weaves these areas together to explore why these "mascots" are so demeaning to us all.

Uncovering the truth behind the myth.......2000-12-16

During my high school unit on Native American history and culture last fall, I used the Illiniwek issue to show my students the subtleties of racism. I wish at the time I had Spindel's book to drive her best point home: that white America needs its Native American symbols to justify our presence here on this continent and to forget a significant part of our shameful history. We also refuse to acknowledge the issues present day Native Americans face because then we would have to face up to the crimes of our founders. That it why supporters of Chief Illiniwek refuse to listen to the very people they claim to honor.

This topic is extremely controvesial and Carol Swindel handles the topic very well. She takes time to present both sides of the issue including a history of both the Illini Indians and chief illiniwek. It's difficult to read this book and not be affected by both sides of the issue. I applaud Swindel for having the courage to write a comprehensive study of the use of racist mascots in America. A must read if you are a Big Ten or Illini fan.

The truth about the chief.......2000-09-30

For fans and foes of the cheif illiniwek controversy, this book is a must. Spindel takes the time to research the history of the Illini Indians, their culture and their demise. She has also researched the history of the University's symbol and presents and unbiased documentary of the origins. It's diffcult to read this book and not change your opinion on the issues. Well worth the time and money invested in reading this work.

If you're brand new to web page authoring like myself, the "Bible" is an excellent guide. I bought it on the strength of a review here at Amazon.... Everything "ep" wrote on that review is true. The Quick Start Book is exactly what it is - a quick start, and it's good. It helped me quickly understand the basics of FrontPage 2000.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Bible by Edelbrock and Karlin is an excellent supplement to an excellent software. It's not perfect, like "ep" pointed out, but I'm building a departmental intranet using only this book and the program's user help index.

This book is good, but the problem lies in the application software itself. Frontpage is the worst ever happens to me. If I'd known Dreamweaver, I'd never had spent 2 weeks learning the Frontpage. You'd love the bible series if you're a beginner, but if you want something more advanced, then look else where.

Two stars for the quickstart, the only thing of value.......2000-04-27

A bloated piece of junk.

If you want crossbrowser compatability, don't buy FrontPage. p. 462 "The bottom line on DHTML effects: they only work with Microsoft's browser. TIP: The DHTML effects are controlled by an included JavaScript file called animate.js. You can also edit this file to deal with the Netscape browser."

Isn't that why I bought the *(*$&$#* book! GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN ACTUALLY USE!

If you want ASP, don't look here either. Chapter 18 refers you to "a later chapter", chapter 21 refers you back to 18 and "a later chapter" that I couldn't find, I think I was just too annoyed to search.

I am so disappointed with this book (and the limitations Micro$oft imposed on FrontPage) that I'll probably dump FrontPage altogether and get DreamWeaver instead.

The Bible on Hiking Shenandoah National Park.......2007-04-02

Someone suggested I purchase this book when I started hiking Shenandoah National Park (SNP) over 20 years ago. I've since purchased and been given other hiking guides to the region but none come close to the practicality and readability of this consummate guide. Most importantly, the balance of detail is perfect -- everything of interest from botanical to historical observations are here without getting lost in the woods. The author loves what he is writing about and it comes through. If summitting "Old Rag" is the best hike in the SNP (and I think it is, although the author opts for the trail up Hogcamp Branch), consider this the "Old Rag" of hiking books. You'll need to buy it used but it will be a long time before it goes out of date.

Best hiking/touring guide ever written.......2006-09-03

One of my (many) peculiarities is that I love to read hiking guides, even for places I've never visited and probably never will. They may appear to be dry tabulations of mileages and directions and features, but in all cases the authors' love of the landscape comes out in some small way or another, and it's fun to catch the authors being personal when they're trying to be dry.

But Henry Heatwole's book is different. Whereas other authors try to hide their personalities, and you have to work hard to catch it as it sneaks out, Heatwole allows his personality to flow out easily yet unobtrusively. His love for the landscape of Shenandoah National Park is tangible and contagious. His love for a thoughtful, considered life is a bit harder to find, but it's there as well. Again it is unobtrusive, but this is in some sense a philosophical guide to living a good life as well as a touring guide to the Skyline Drive and a hiking guide to Shenandoah's many trails.

I recommend this book even to those who will never visit Shenandoah.

"THE" Book On Shenandoah National Park!.......2001-12-01

This book is out of print because the author has passed away and there are (unfortunately)disagreements on updates. Today, one would have to buy at least three hiking books, a general park overview book, a park history book and a few maps just to remotely compare to the information included in *this* book!

Mr. Heatwole provides an enjoyable mile-by-mile overview on the park. Containing incredibly detailed information on trails (hikes by milepost, length, estimated hiking time, elevation changes, etc.), park animals, plants, weather, camping, waterfall heights, geology, mountain range names and more, this is THE book on Shenandoah National Park!!

Perfect of its type.......2000-05-01

The late author not only knew and loved the trails of S.N. Park intimately; he had the rare gift of organizing his material for maximum usefulness to the reader. A vast amount of information is in the book, yet none of it superfluous, and it never overwhelms. The author wrote with an understated charm reminiscent of Frost's New England characters. Some of the book's facts are obsolete, but only a very few. The guide is not merely descriptive, but charitably evaluative, thus doubling its unsefulness. Any who love the Park and its trails will surely treasure this book; it has no equal or replacement.
