Book Description
Expanding Literacies presents eighteen fresh essays that explore how English teaching at both secondary and post-secondary levels can be made more work-relevant. The book shows teachers, administrators, and workplace trainers how to put aside disabling dichotomies of school versus work in favor of preparing students with new skills for new workplaces. Within a theoretical context that encourages development of situated uses of language, the volume identifies ways to reshape traditional English classes so that students are prepared to be successful in work environments that demand teamwork, problem solving, and complex communication skills. Some chapters examine the escalating literacy demands of specific workplaces: manufacturing, health care, chemical and nuclear industries, and high-tech settings. Predictable yet fascinating.......2000-05-20
This book presents a well balanced and well researched comparison of gender roles and women's work both inside and outside the home in 4 countries: China, Japan, the US and England. This book is well supported with lots of data presented in the form of numerous tables throughout the text. I don't believe the authors carried out any new studies for the work. Instead, they pull together data from a number of published sources, in particular, the Social Change and Economic Life Initiative (SCELI). The results of their study are predictable in that their findings seem to confirm cultural stereotypes of (in)flexibility of gender roles in the countries studied. Nevertheless, the details of the data are quite interesting.

Super fun to read and share.......2004-01-23
this is a really unique, fun book. You use it more than read it. I spent about 3 hours reading this and Love book with my husband...going back and forth with our favorite observations in the book. I had to steal it back from my daughter (she is 19)

Wonderful.......2003-02-03
The William and Constance Starr's book is written by two professional musicians, Suzuki teachers and Suzuki parents of 8. It is based on the extensive personal experience and close interaction with Shinichi Suzuki while living in Japan and by hosting him at their house in the US. The book's main themes are the practice of teaching children music using Suzuki method and topics relevant to raising children in general, each taking roughly a half of the book.
The narrative is both inspirational and practical, while the chapters are to the point: a statement is made and illustrated by a real life example. The book is certainly an invaluable companion for a Suzuki parent with advises ranging from choosing a teacher and supervision of practice to child's participation in orchestras. But it also should appeal to any parent who feels that raising children is one of his top priorities: nurturing a positive self-image with a "yes, I can" attitude, importance of tradition, woes of sibling rivalry and significance of correct diet are some of the issues that the book tackles.
I would recommend this book to any parent.
Good Book for Suzuki Parents.......2001-07-05
I was recommended this book by my kids violin teacher. I found this book to be full of very helpful advice and great perspectives. The authors are both music teachers and parents and the perspective they provide is helping greatly as my kids are learning Suzuki violin. It's a must read for any parent who has a kid learning a musical instument.

A great little piece of work.......2005-09-01
Many people have complained that GURPS is too generic. That the GM and players have to work to breath life into a campaign. This wonderful little book addresses that issue quite nicely. The author has created 67 detailed nasty critters; their characteristics, their goals, their methods, and their environments. Then he provides 2-3 "adventure seeds" for each monster that the GM can flesh out quickly and easily to create adventures of varying degrees of complexity and challenge. These "adventure seeds" are extremely well done and GMs might want to buy the book just for all the adventuring ideas put forth there.
The creatures span all manner of time and space and could be used in a science fiction, fantasy, historical, or even a super-hero campaign with little effort.
My only complaint is that there's no way to index the creatures power against the strength of the party. It might well take some experience and possibly some GM intervention to avoid accidentally killing the party. There is an index in the back that provides a thumbnail sketch of all the critters but some sort of power rating would have made the book perfect instead of extremely good.
The descriptions are wonderfully macabre and the artwork does a great job of further setting the tone. There's no question that the author really enjoyed creating this book. There's still some lingering questions about the type of personality that would come up with some of these monsters, but that's not your problem. Just go out and buy the book and enjoy how it pumps up your campaign without any extra effort on your part.
The first time I wet my pants in years.......2000-11-11
I read this book at night and was so scared that I didn't want to get out of bed to pee. It brought back some wonderful memories of my childhood but cleaning it up was a pain. Also, my wife was pretty upset. I was almost successful blaming it on her but the center of the stain gave me away.
I have used a lot of these creatures in my space/fantasy/old west campaign. The creatures are very creative and the outstanding artwork alone is reason enough to buy this book.
I didn't really wet my bed. But I thought about it. Maybe tonight...

There's even a literary edge with playlists like '10 songs raved about in Murakami novels'. Each of the Playlists has a nugget about the song (why you want it on your iPod), and a listings of where it's from (remember CDs?).

Listmania Fun.......2007-01-09
This is a small concentrated book for all the "listmaniacs" out there. I would prefer a more thematic approach and not so much artist related lists. You can certainly find some good ideas for playlists and easily explore music genres and artists that you always wanted to listen but didn't know where to start from. Oh, and the guest celebrities lists are fun and interesting too. But still, I would recommend it for hardcore listmaniacs and not to everybody.
Ear-Irresistibles.......2006-07-24
All of a sudden the whole world of music is there for you...and how do you choose? You think a Surf music theme would be totally tubular, maybe you've always loved sultry Philly Soul and want a taste of some gem you haven't been exposed to yet. Providing wonderful fodder to fill up your iPod, this also does the trick for zippy casual reading.
Of course there's editorializing...and I loved disagreeing with a lot of it--the point is to ignite some ideas. My only regret is that it wasn't longer.
Rough guide for Playlists.......2006-07-14
This music guide is a good starting point for someone looking for Playlist suggestions.
What I like: A wide range of music styles. Even if you used only a few suggestions, there would be a very eclectic selection of music on your MP3 player.
What I didn't like: Jazz, Blues, Soul, Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Alternative, and even Bubblegum are well covered; there are some categories that are given short shrift. Pre 20th century classical(c'mon now Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven don't even rate a playlist?). Also given the bum's rush are artists such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, and Kenny Chesney. All of these guys have a single playlist "Men with Hats". While Loretta, Dolly, the Cash and Carter families are given their due, there is little if any(couldn't find it)of Reba McIntire, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Rimes, and Shania Twain. I know, I know, people who have MP3s AND like these artists are in a minority. However, it isn't a tiny minority.
This was another aspect I disliked about this book; gratuitous political opinions put in the lists. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but, if I wanted to read about "Bush-Fuhrer" or what have you, I could read Daily Kos or other political tracts. This is book on suggestions for music play lists. Tell me what's good about a particular song and why it should be on my MP3 and stick to that.
Suggestions for improvement: Some online music stores such as iTunes do not carry certain artists. It would be helpful to indicate as such.
Irresponsible play list.......2006-05-28
This book is so weak that the author actually quotes George Clinton in his dubious Funk category- "The glide in your stride and the dip in your hip," but doesn't include the absolute master funk in his playlist. And no Rod Stewart or Jeff Beck. This is a total waste. NO MUDDY WATERS?
