The Body Impolitic is a critical study of tradition, not merely as an ornament of local and national heritage, but also as a millstone around the necks of those who are condemned to produce it.

Michael Herzfeld takes us inside a rich variety of small-town Cretan artisans' workshops to show how apprentices are systematically thwarted into learning by stealth and guile. This harsh training reinforces a stereotype of artisans as rude and uncultured. Moreover, the same stereotypes that marginalize artisans locally also operate to marginalize Cretans within the Greek nation and Greece itself within the international community. What Herzfeld identifies as "the global hierarchy of value" thus frames the nation's ancient monuments and traditional handicrafts as evidence of incurable "backwardness."

Herzfeld's sensitive observations offer an intimately grounded way of understanding the effects of globalization and of one of its most visible offshoots, the heritage industry, on the lives of ordinary people in many parts of the world today.

The humor in this book is tongue and cheek but in a stupid kind of way. Most of jokes (Dennis Rodman, OJ Simpson, Bill Clinton, etc.) show their age and aren't really that "timeless". Most of the cartoons take up a full page and are only mild chuckles.

Choking With Laughter.......2000-06-08

I must first confess I am not a cigar smoker and bought this book for a friend who is. He sat down with it and proceeded to chuckle and laugh and gaffaw. Then he began reading it aloud. It is funny. It's smart funny. It's a pretty quick read. It would fall under the catagory of bathroom reading. It's full of short pieces. You can jump in and out anywhere. It had a lot of energy. I really enjoyed it.

Awesome Book.......2007-08-19

This book is an excellent teaching book for anyone!
Here are the songs: Chorus from "Judas Maccabaeus" by G.F. Handel, Musette by J.S. Bach, Hunters' Chorus by C.M. von Weber, Long, Long Ago, by T.H. Bayly, Waltz by J. Brahms, Bourree by G.F. Handel, The Two Grenadiers by R. Schumann, Theme from "Witches' Dance" by N. Paganini, Gavotte from "Mignon" by A. Thomas, Gavotte by J.B. Lully, Minuet in G by L. van Beethoven, and Minuet by L. Boccherini.

I've only played a couple songs so far, and they are beautiful. I like the Suzuki method because each book gives you a solid foundation and a little taste for the next book to come. I have this CD that comes with it, and the songs are WAY too fast for me to play along with. Also, the book gives you fingerings above most notes, which is a little drawback.

The bottomline is that the Suzuki series is excellent and I would recommend it anyone beginning the violin! :D

What player revolutionized chess? What player found chess a chaotic game and left it nearly a science? Which player did more to advance the way that chess was played, perhaps more so than any other player who ever lived? Which player was the first to systematize the rules for the art of defense in chess? The answer to all of these questions is: Wilhelm Steinitz.

The "rap" on Steinitz today - from my dealings with players on dozens (!!) of Internet chess servers - is that he was a boring player who could not play well. They also think he did not play interesting games and he could not play tactics. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. (His game with Bardeleben from Hastings, 1895; is considered by most experts to be one of the grandest games of chess ever played.)

If you want to read and own a book that was lovingly and carefully written by one of Steinitz's own descendants, then get this book. You will read an account of his life that is interesting, and was painstakingly checked for accuracy. In the back, you get about 20 games by GM A. Soltis, that are carefully annotated - with a completely new perspective. This is easily one of the highest quality books (and the most prized) in my entire collection.

If you want every chess game that Steinitz ever played, a good companion volume to this one is the collection of all his games, published by Sid Pickard of Dallas, TX.

A remarkable biography of the first world chess champion William Steinitz. Excellently written by one of his descendants Kurt Landsberger, tells the story of a unique personality, who despite great odds, succeeded in maintaining his supremacy over some thrity years of competitive chess. The book is first a biography, and second a collection of about fifteen selected games which are annotated in appropriate detail by Grandmaster Soltiz. In telling Steinitz's story, Landsberger also brings to life many of the other characters of Steinitz's time and numerous historical sidelights that period. Although everything is capable of being improved, this effort I believe is the best work of its type, and essential reading for anyone interested in one of most significant personalities in the history of chess. Aside from the excellent contents, the book maintains McFarland's very high standards of chess publishing.

This book is a pretty good reference manual. It is better than most of the other books in explaining topics without a lot of extra techical jargon or fluff.

Excelent Migration Guide for Exchange 2003 !!!.......2005-04-09

If you are about to tackle a Migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 or from Exchange 2000 to Exchange Server 2003, this book is the guide you have been looking for. The author will tell you what you need to know in order to plan your migration and design the new Windows/Exchange 2003 environment. The book lists all the tools out there that can help you make your life a lot easier and it will take you through the process in a step-by-step fashion. On top of all the author does a wonderful work in aticipating most posible questions from the reader. I migrated from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 two servers in the same Active Directory Forest but in two different locations. All in a single weekend. I give it 5 Stars and a standing ovation. This book is a must have tool for a smooth Migration to Exchange 2003.

We just completed our migration to Exchange 2003, and this book helped us plan the process, gave us a solid outline on how to test the migration process, and walked us through our live production migration. The book also helped us better understand the administration tools in Exchange 2003 along with tips on ongoing maintenance and management practices that we have put in place. This was the best IT book I've ever owned, packed with great information!

Has it All !!!.......2005-02-07

This book was recommended to me by our Microsoft TAM as the best Exchange 2003 book on the market. He was right, this book has real world information on how to successfully architect Exchange 2003 and migrate existing mail to the new environment. We used this book as our bible through most of last year. I just bought 5 more copies of book to hand out to my team as we need the same real world recommendations to administer and manage our Exchange 2003 enterprise, as well as tune and optimize our servers. This book makes designing, implementing, and supporting Exchange 2003 simple, and if you follow the procedures in the book, it actually does make what we thought might be complicated processes a whole lot easier. I describe this book as the guide for "real" Exchange architects, implementers, and administrators who want to know a lot of information quickly and succinctly.
