          Book Description

For the fortieth anniversary of the recording of"Like a Rolling Stone," the definitive biography of the song that caught the questing spirit of its time and overnight changed the rules of the possible in popular music for all time

Greil Marcus saw Bob Dylan for the first time in a New Jersey field in 1963. He didn't know the name of the scruffy singer who had a bit part in a Joan Baez concert, but he knew his performance was unique. So began a dedicated and enduring relationship between America's finest critic of popular music-"simply peerless," in Nick Hornby's words, "not only as a rock writer but as a cultural historian"-and Bob Dylan. In Like A Rolling Stone Marcus locates Dylan's six-minute masterwork in its richest, fullest context, capturing the heady atmosphere of the recording studio in 1965 as musicians and technicians clustered around the mercurial genius from Minnesota, the young Bob Dylan at the height of his powers. But Marcus shows how, far from being a song only of 1965,"Like a Rolling Stone" is rooted in faraway American places and times, drawing on timeless cultural impulses that make the song as challenging, disruptive, and restless today as it ever was, capable of reinvention by artists as disparate as the comedian Richard Belzer and the Italian hip-hop duo Articolo 31."Like a Rolling Stone" never loses its essential quality, which is directly to challenge the listener: it remains a call to arms and a demand for a better world. Forty years later it is still revolutionary as will and idea, as an attack and an embrace. How Does it Feel? In this unique, burningly intense book, Marcus tells you, and much more besides.

5 out of 5 stars some Blakean breakthrough into the heavens of poetry..........2007-07-07

This reader thought he knew this era-shattering Dylan song and its contexts; but this book kept enriching it start to finish, and showed as well how it nearly did not happen, could have easily been abandoned in the drafts of the studio or the maze of putting Bloomfield and Kooper in on it. I was a CT kid in the shadows of Forest Hill concert, and in truth I was applauding that electric guitar like it was some Blakean breakthrough into the heavens of poetry, same thing when I heard the Byrds sing Turn Turn Turn or Tambourine Man. Re Dylan, Marcus keeps raising spectral contexts out of the airwaves, shows how the song breaks into the `great time' and afterlife of music created by Sam Cooke and Robert Johnson. This books shows how Dylan was using the top 40 as an access into that depth of folk-pop poetry coming out of the future, making a future America happen in the present, endure as a legacy and obligation. I can see how a poet such as Dylan would be grateful for such a reading, breaking his poetry into the invisible republic of the spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Let Us Now Praise Famous Pop Songs.......2007-04-21

Marcus, especially in this book, reminds me of James Agee. Not Agee the reactionary film critic, but the ecstatic Agee of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men - the way he could look deeply and lovingly at a sharecropper's cabin and find every splinter and stain luminous and profoundly human and dignified. Check out Agee's riff about listening to Beethoven with your head crammed into the speaker and cranking it up until it hurts. When Marcus digs into his obsessions it can be like that, revealing details of perception and levels of feeling that you can't imagine having missed.

On the downside, Marcus also shares Agee's tendency to lapse into rambling and grandiosity, and the words can pile up and stumble over themselves, leaving you wondering what the hell he's talking about. He has so many ideas and passions, and wants to draw connections between his subject and so many other things. When it works it can be fascinating, but sometimes it's a bit of a stretch, and you wish he would at least not try to cram them all into one sentence/paragraph/page. In this book especially, I often found myself wishing for a stronger editorial hand to rein him in and clear up some of the log jams. It raises an interesting question about how far you can push journalism in the direction of literature and have it still be effective. After all, Agee's great tome began as a magazine article that got out of hand...

But I like to watch Marcus' mind at work, even when he goes off the deep end. He's one of my favorite writers to argue with; I may occasionally think he's full of it, but I admire the effort. When so much music writing is either lame fanboy drivel, shallow blurbage, or arid academic nonsense, it's a pleasure to read someone both passionate and scholarly who is prepared to dig so deeply, to stake a claim that this music (whatever it is - in this case Dylan's) really matters.

3 out of 5 stars A really good magazine article that went undited........2007-04-03

There are many interesting facts regarding the cultural and musical importance of this song and many good anectodes from the studio. However, the interesting parts could have made a decent magazine article (and have already) while the rest is quite rambling and bloated. Still, a decent enough book and if you don't know much about the song or its importance, not a waste of time.

1 out of 5 stars Where's That Zero Star Option When You Need It?.......2006-09-06

I happen to believe that Bob Dylan is the most important American artistic voice of the last half century at least. I also happen to believe that Like a Rolling Stone is the best rock song ever. If one does not believe those two things, Greil Marcus' hyperbolic huffing of a book is not going to convince you. Only Dylan's work will do that. If, on the other hand, you do already agree, Marcus' hip pomposity is pointless. Is the man capable of writing a sentence without layered metaphors and with fewer than twenty-five words? By the evidence in Like a Rolling Stone, no. If you want to know what Dylan is and means, read his own Chronicles, not this.

3 out of 5 stars What Did You Say this Book is About?.......2006-04-07

This is about Bob Dylan, based on the title of his most famous song, or maybe about his music and others who also sang his songs. Or maybe it is about the culture and trends of that time, or about the uncertainty of American cultural identity. I don't know. I was left puzzled and a bit frustrated.

The author writes very impressionistically, and it is sometimes hard to tell what he is talking about. He includes some interesting details about particular songs and their performances, but this is not a chronological epic. The author jumps around and uses creative associations and metaphors.

Thus it is difficult to relate one song to another, one event to another, to get a picture of what was really happening in Dylan's life and music or in the culture around him, to which his music supposedly speaks. I kept feeling like something was about to happen, to be revealed, to unfold dynamically out of the somewhat surreal scatter of events, people, places and songs. But it never happened.

No culminating event occurred; no point was ever made. No summarizing reflection ever arrived to clarify the muddle and tie the pieces together.

Marcus seems to present some keen insights about Dylan (real name Robert Zimmerman) and the times, and many other music groups and songs, events and places, trends and impressions, but most of the time it is not clear just what the insight is.

Maybe that is the insight, as a commentary on the times and the spirit Dylan is thought to represent. Is this an ode to one song; a tribute to the writer-singer? A personal flight of skittish memory clips?

Somewhat frustrating reading on what would have been a good topic.

                  Book Description

Love blooms wherever people gather, and so the Internet has become the dating center for a global population of romantics. Freed of limitations posed by physical bodies, identities, reputations, or accountability, people are experimenting with new types of relationships.

Connecting in this new world, people are engaging in love and romance at astonishing rates, and often with disregard to their monogamous offline relationships. They and their loved ones are often not sure if they are cheating or just experimenting. Infidelity on the Internet will help you define cyber-infidelity for yourself. The book will come alive for you with many personal stories and individual conversations that help you understand how people have fallen in love—or what they believe to be love. It will outline their paths to virtual romance and cyber-infidelity. You will hear their experiences, share their joys, cry at their heartbreaks, and somewhere in these stories find answers to your questions.

This book is written as a survival guide. It will examine motivations and benefits, as well as repercussions and long-term effects of experimenting with cyber-infidelity. We will discuss how to understand and deal with the eleven types of virtual lovers, and we will reveal their motivations. Some people are sincere, some are harmless, and some are dangerous. Quizzes will help you decide if one's behavior has slipped into cyber-sexual compulsivity or cyber-infidelity. We will also provide you with a checklist of signs of a cyber-affair. If your suspicions are correct, we will explain the normal course of emotional reactions to cyber-affairs, and teach you techniques to manage your reactions.

We will discuss how to deal with the discovery of a cyber-affair, how to cope with the emotions that typically follow, and how to recover from its often-devastating blows. After the discovery of cyber-infidelity, decisions must be made about the future of your relationship. Infidelity on the Internet will help you think through the important considerations involved with those decisions. We will help you through the path of recovery, by teaching you how to deal with the strong and often troubling reactions experienced by both the faithful and unfaithful partners. We will suggest ways in which the unfaithful partner can help restore trust and intimacy in the relationship. Infidelity and the Internet will show you what constitutes an apology for cyber-infidelity, and how to bring closure to these painful episodes. We will also provide you with a number of resources to help you find added support and direction both online and offline.

Infidelity on the Internet is different from other books in that it is a compilation of stories as submitted to the SelfhelpMagazine.com website's “Cyber-Affairs Essay Contest,” blended with feminist psychological theory and research relevant to romance, relationships, sexuality and infidelity. This combination makes it the first truly interactive book of its kind, written with the help of hundreds of experienced web citizens, and crafted by researchers and clinicians.

So, come with us on this journey through virtual romance, real betrayal and recovery from Infidelity and the Internet.

4 out of 5 stars Disturbing but helpful.......2007-03-08

Investigating and trying to understand the dark world of internet infidelity this book has been a real eye-opener. It has helped me understand that the parties taking part all justify and rationalize their activities the same way while allowing me to feel that my feelings are the same as most injured parties. It is disturbing but helpful on the road back to getting a damaged relationship back on track.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and Objective.......2006-11-07

The language of this book is very simple, easy to follow and to understand. Infidelity online is a very recent subject, so it's difficult to find serious books about it. I'm studing this topic in my post-graduation course, and this book has helped me a lot. I think that infideliy online need to be more searched until now!

4 out of 5 stars Looking to buy It.......2006-05-15

I came online to buy this book, now that I've read it. I got it originally to see what it might have, information wise, since my ex-husband and I discussed the chat rooms and cyber situations in the past. I never thought of myself as cheating, since I kept it open to him, but it led that direction anyway, and I really wish that I'd had this book a couple years back.

                  5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! .......2006-03-04

This book helped my husband realize and acknowledge his addiction, and helped me, his wife, to understand what exactly he was dealing with. It also helped us both begin his recovery by suggesting ways to overcome and deal with this kind of addiction. I DEFINITELY give this book a 5* rating, simply because it saved my marriage.

                  5 out of 5 stars A good reality check.......2002-04-28

This book defines and tries to explain internet infidelity. It shows the hurtful and destructive effects of internet infidelity on all parties concerned, often using case histories to illustrate types of behavior and the potential effects.

This book became a "reality checkpoint" for me when I needed it most. My husband kept telling me that there's nothing wrong with chat room encounters because they "aren't real" (whatever that means), that chat room encounters are no worse than looking at a pornographic magazine, and that, in any event, it's all my fault. For a while, I was plagued with grief, guilt and self-doubt. This book helped me see the excuses, denials and finger-pointing for what they really were. If you are having self-doubts and are beating yourself up emotionally, take a look at this book.

                      Book Description

Few scientists have made lasting contributions to as many fields as Francis Galton. He was an important African explorer, travel writer, and geographer. He was the meteorologist who discovered the anticyclone, a pioneer in using fingerprints to identify individuals, the inventor of regression and correlation analysis in statistics, and the founder of the eugenics movement. Now, Nicholas Gillham paints an engaging portrait of this Victorian polymath. The book traces Galton's ancestry (he was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and the cousin of Charles Darwin), upbringing, training as a medical apprentice, and experience as a Cambridge undergraduate. It recounts in colorful detail Galton's adventures as leader of his own expedition in Namibia. Darwin was always a strong influence on his cousin and a turning point in Galton's life was the publication of the Origin of Species. Thereafter, Galton devoted most of his life to human heredity, using then novel methods such as pedigree analysis and twin studies to argue that talent and character were inherited and that humans could be selectively bred to enhance these qualities. To this end, he founded the eugenics movement which rapidly gained momentum early in the last century. After Galton's death, however, eugenics took a more sinister path, as in the United States, where by 1913 sixteen states had involuntary sterilization laws, and in Germany, where the goal of racial purity was pushed to its horrific limit in the "final solution." Galton himself, Gillham writes, would have been appalled by the extremes to which eugenics was carried. Here then is a vibrant biography of a remarkable scientist as well as a superb portrait of science in the Victorian era.

3 out of 5 stars The Title Sums it Up.......2007-07-27

A word to the wise, heed the title and sub-title of this book. It is not a very good all around biography of Sir Francis Galton. The book does bring you up to his first accomplishment, African exploration, very directly. Other chapters occasionally touch on some of his life-milestones like marriage and his relationship with the Royal Geographical Society. The majority of the book discusses his theories and scientific achievements. The book delves deep when it arrives on Galton's ideas and experiments in the field of genetics and hereditary traits. The reader will wonder why the book takes such great pains to explain Galton's outdated Victorian genetic theory. A quick perusal of the author's bio shows that he is a professor of genetics.
Sir Francis Galton does not have much name recognition today, but his name pops up in various books about the history of African exploration, statistics and genetics. He was one of a hand-full of renaissance type geniuses that Britain produced during the Victorian Age. They had wide ranging interests and consequently wide ranging discoveries. Galton is also credited with discovering the uniqueness of fingerprints to each individual. He began the modern type of data collection through scientific surveys and he correlated the results statistically. His improvements in the field of statistics are still used today.
There are not too many biographical books about Sir Francis Galton
This book may be a little too much for the casual reader looking for some general information . The reader must be prepared to skim over the deeper sections.

3 out of 5 stars Dense with detail - for committed Galton students only.......2006-06-11

This biography of Sir Francis Galton is clearly well-researched. The difficulty, however, is that while the author writes individual paragraphs in an interesting, descriptive style, the paragraphs themselves come one after another in confusing sequence, with so much detail that it is difficult to follow or focus on the main thread.

A much more readable Galton biography is the one published in 2004 by Martin Brookes, which obviously used the same primary sources and contains much of the same information (in some instances, almost word-for-word.) The Gillham book has the advantage of having visual representations of Galton's graphs, tables, etc., and contains a deeper level of scientific detail. If you are more interested in the life of the man, what made him tick, and his place in history, go with the Brookes version.

Note: Gillham's version has an extensive index; Brookes' version has none.

4 out of 5 stars Less a biography than a history of a nova among stars.......2004-03-14

A comprehensive life of Sir Francis Galton busting with detail. Unfortunately more about what he did than about what he was or how he came to be. In the later parts he is hardly mentioned in page after page while the abstruse arguments of his disciples are rehashed ad nauseum. There is a "tinge" of calling Galton a racist and he's connected to Herrenstein's The Bell Curve -- which dates this book. In truth, Galton was an amazing and varied genius who created much of statistics and the idea of "intelligence." One can't help but notice the incredible group of connections between Galton and other Victorian intelligensiae such as JBS Haldane, J Clerk Maxwell, William Kingdon Clifford (whom some think is the model for H.G.Wells' "Time Traveler") and others. On balance, a qualified recommendation. Lots of notes and a remarkable subject. Yet, I would have liked more information on Galton's own mental processes. The story reinforces the idea that the Victorian age was really interesting and chock-o-block with interesting people.
