Book Description
Virtual Lab inIndustrial Motor Control transforms a personal computer into a top-quality interactive, experience-based learning environment. Ideal for use independently, or as a multimedia supplement to Industrial Motor Control, 4th Edition by Stephen Herman, Virtual Lab in Industrial Motor Control enables its users to engage in simulated lab activities any time, anywhere, and without investing in costly equipment. At its most basic level, the Virtual Lab in Industrial Motor Control presents users with a control diagram that may be modified to underscore the effects of changes to variables and devices on a circuit. Activities at this stage include varying resistor or capacitor values, opening and closing switches and relay contacts, and changing connections on devices. With this knowledge, users may choose to delve into circuit building activities or participate in troubleshooting exercises that increase in complexity from single, easy-to-detect faults to more complex multiple fault detection. Review questions are also provided to reinforce motor control concepts learned through experimentation.

Book Description
Primarily focusing on the organization of production and labor use practices in the Caribbean's second largest sugar industry, this work's historical, macroeconomic, political, and sociocultural components depict the reality of today's Dominican sugar economy. The Dominican Republic has been radically altered by its internationally oriented sugar economy--its society and national culture transformed and its political, legal, and economic structures modified. This book describes the progressive replacement of national labor in the sugar industry by foreign workers. Comparing the three distinct sugar corporations, it concludes that all three exploited foreign labor. The study refutes modern slavery charges through social science theory and extensive field research. Depicting living and working conditions in the fields, it concludes that slavery charges are the result of superficial analyses of symbols. More in-depth analyses display one of the most extreme forms of superexploitation in the twentieth century. Addressing present-day labor utilization strategies in the Dominican Republic sugar plantation system, Martin Murphy focuses on three areas: the logic of production, foreign labor integration, and a comparative analysis of three corporations. His first two chapters provide an overview of the historic and contemporary Dominican sugar industry. Historical patterns of labor recruitment and use are then presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 describes the basic logic of production and use of various types of labor for the plantations of the 1980s. Murphy's last four chapters address the question of heavy reliance on Haitian labor: Chapter 5 provides a history of Haitian migration; Chapter 6 discusses factors of expulsion and attraction which condition present-day Haitian migration to Dominican fields; Chapters 7 and 8 conclude with questions of Haitian ethnicity and its relationship to production organization.

Book Description
The Celtic Consciousness, which ranges from prehistoric to modern times, contains fifty-five essays written by leading authorities on the Celtic world. Employing a diversity of scholarly approaches, and illustrated with 170 half-tone illustrations, the book examines the myths, music, history, literature, folklore, art, and archaeology of the Celtic peoples, their place in Central Europe and their connections with the Near and Far East. The book amply demonstrates that the roots of Western civilization may lay less in the Mediterranean than in the great pre-Roman Celtic presence, and how these Celtic values and perceptions have enjoyed a resurgence in our own century.

Book Description
Out of the hardscrabble port city of Liverpool, England, there emerged a rock n roll group that would become the most celebrated of all time. And the soul of that group was John Lennon, the Smart Beatle, who with his mates changed the way the world looked, partied and lived. From the days in a Hamburg basement club to the Ed Sullivan Show to the movies to the White Album, the music traced a phenomenal trajectory. Along the way came his beloved Yoko and sons Julian and Sean, the breakup of the Fab Four, the fascinating solo albums, and finally, in the end, an assassins bullet. Life was there with John and the Beatles from their first visit to these shores till the final days. This exultant tale is told in vivid photography and words, as John is brought to life in a truly special volume from the editors of Life.
Customer Reviews:
Nice compilation.......2007-05-16
This book has a lot of nice photos i've never seen before. The one i really like is in the first pages, where is a compilation of John Lennon's ID cards. It's great.
Lennon is GOD.......2007-02-24
This is a nice book of memories of the world's best musical genius of all time.I still miss him. We lost a lot when we lost him.
What was it about John Lennon?.......2006-05-01
I can't figure it out. What is it about John Lennon that makes his photographs so fascinating, fresh, and appealing all these years after he was killed? Is it because he is the only Beatle that didn't grow old? Is it because he is the image of my generation's youth? Is it because of the music he created that still resonates today? Is it simply because he was so photogenic? Is it because he was an enigma, someone we thought we knew, someone we wanted to know better? Is it all of these things, or some combination?
I don't know; but this book is a haunting joy. It features John alone, with the Quarry Men and Beatles, with his family, in shots there were staged, but often shots that gave us a hint of the real person. The book is composed of the work of several photographers that spent time with John and got to know him. The photos and brief write-ups give some insight into the real person, one that is nicer and more vulnerable than the persona that he fronted. You get a real sense of personal loss that the photographers felt after he was killed by a madman in 1981, a loss that was personal for the rest of us too - for some reason. (Again, what is it about John Lennon?)
Not a bad retrospective.
It was 25 years ago.......2006-03-20
For anyone who loved John Lennon and who was alive when he was murdered, the memory will never leave you. Everyone will remember exactly where they were when they heard the news that was horrifying and shocking. For me, it seems like yesterday when my brother walked into my bedroom and said, "Howard Cossel just announced on Monday Night Football that John Lennon was shot." There's no way to describe the numbing agony of that moment and its aftermath. For people of a certain age, this moment marked a turning point: an end of childhood innocence and the death of an icon of a generation.
This book is an excellent one for people who weren't around in 1980 and don't have actual memories of John Lennon. For those who have long followed his life, there are no new photographs or information contained here, but it's still worth the ride. It's heavily weighted towards the Beatles years, but there is still adequate coverage of the Dakota years and the assassination itself.
To sum up: excellent for newbies, adequate for long-time Lennon lovers.
John Before And After.......2006-01-27
John Lennon a man true to his words also standing not behind them but with them. That and his freedom in music is what made him big.Though what about his life before decaying behind fame and all the riches in the world?LIFE really captured Johns true essence from his middle class childhood to his stardom in the fab 4 to the final days of the limelight before he was murdered. That murder has came and went about 25 years ago and he will never be forgotten his motives were a strong point and LIFE helps his legacy live on.So many photos (WICH IS A TRADEMARK) with little to no information but with the supplied info you get a good idea at John's day to day life.(and the general person he was)
The point of it is to case a legend 25 years after his untimely death. Not any death but a MAsterful Musician.

A New Religious America: How a "Christian Country" Has Become the World's Most Religiously Diverse Nation
ASIN: 0226293211 |
Book Description
In this intriguing history, James Gilbert examines the confrontation between modern science and religion as these disparate, sometimes hostile modes of thought clashed in the arena of American culture. Beginning in 1925 with the infamous Scopes trial, Gilbert traces nearly forty years of competing attitudes toward science and religion.
"Anyone seriously interested in the history of current controversies involving religion and science will find Gilbert's book invaluable."—Peter J. Causton, Boston Book Review

Customer Reviews:
Facsinating: lives struggling with the deepest questions...........1999-04-12
Gilbert argues that conflicts between science and religion caused remarkable episodes where American culture was "assembled and integrated." His historical analysis, which begins with the Scopes antievolution trial of 1925 and ends with the construction of the Sermons from Science pavilion in the Seattle World's Fair of 1962, concludes that these episodes affected Americans "across class, professional, regional, and religious boundaries." He believes that the most important were the Scopes trial, which shattered a nineteenth-Century compromise between mainstream Protestantism and a populist science of common sense, and postwar realization of the perils of the atomic age, which led to political, religious, and intellectual critiques of professionalized science.
Gilbert, a professor of history, eschews the fine details of historical scholarship in favor of a pleasingly broad view. His dramatis personae includes not only scores of scientists, religous leaders, theologians, and politicians, but also filmmakers, popular authors, and public intellectuals of nearly every stripe. Gilbert is chiefly concerned with these peoples' connections with organizations and institutions, for example the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the Moody Bible Institute, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the Religious Research Association, the Committee on Cultural Freedom. He also discusses a similarly wide range of scientific, religious, and popular periodicals, books, and movies such as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Astounding Science Fiction, Immanuel Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision, and the Moody Institute's documentary (produced for the U.S. Air Force!) God of the Atom.
Gilbert's book succeeds rather well, for it provides the reader with the joy of discovering how all these come together in a surprisingly beautiful web of lives struggling with the deepest questions about our world and our place in it.

Customer Reviews:
.NET from 50,000 feet.......2004-02-15
This 156 page book, is an ultra condensed book on the Microsoft preferred design for .NET applications. Like many Microsoft books, this one is poorly written. It is obvious that the book was created by a team with a whiteboard, from an outline then filled in later.
The resulting disjoined book is somewhere between an explanative book and a reference.
Not recommended.
I've been looking for something like this.......2004-01-03
I'm not a Microsoft fan at all. But this book is really helpfull in answering lots of designing questions that arise when trying to design a complex system. It explains, tier by tier, layer by layer, all that has to do with OOD, security, communication, etc.
I'm really happy with this book. Although it has no examples or deep info about anything, it provides lots of links to MSDN articles with the missing info. I strongly recomend it.
More worthy than appears........2003-12-30
Yes, this book is more abstact than applicable. Yes, this book covers general design rather then specific approaches. Yes, this book covers information that is not new. That does not mean this book should not be recommended.
I strongly believe that software engineers need to read more abstract, general books such as this along with the specific, applicable type books. The help keeps us focused on problem solving as opposed to solution techniques. Both are needed to keep us fresh and effective in out roles. Kind of like spring training for baseball players - relearn the game basics and practice the needed skills.
Application Architecture for .NET is one of those books that should be read because the information is technically sound, is relevant to today's computing environment, and provides a solid understanding of designing enterprise level applications. Also, the book is short, direct, and straight-forward ( as a good abstract, general book should be ).
If you want or need a book to provide a concrete approach or a specific solution, no, this book is not for you.
But if you want a book to learn or keep abreast of the direction of current application design and the direction of application architecture, it's worth reading.
Oxymoronic.......2003-12-20
The notion of application architecture applied to a "framework" like .NET is somewhat oxymoronic. This book is credited not to individuals but to Microsoft itself, and such books tend to be more marketing-oriented pitches about how cool Microsoft's software is than serious documents containing deatiled technical information. It has all the right buzzwords like "patterns" and "distributed solutions," but there's little of substance here that couldn't be gleaned elsewhere in a less pedantic package.
Nothing new for the experienced developer.......2003-11-21
There's a lot of sensible information and guidelines in this book, but its main problem is that most of it is a bit abstract, and should be known material for experienced developers or architects.
For inexperienced developers or people just starting out on the path of good software architecture, this book may provide some insights, but doesn't offer much practical advice on how to solve concrete problems.
However, it is a pretty good and comprehensive survey of the state of so-called "best practice" of .NET architecture as it looks today, and I didn't encounter much that I couldn't agree with.
As it is a blissfully short book (157 pages including appendices) compared to most books on software development, it may be worth if you need to get a quick overview of the subject. However, the tone is rather dry and condensed, so don't expect those 157 pages to be a light read.

Book Description
Providing the chronological setting for many of Shakespeare's plays, various swashbuckling novels from Sir Walter Scott's to Robert Louis Stevenson's, and such Hollywood films as Braveheart, late Medieval England is superficially well known. Yet its true complexity remains elusive, locked in the covers of specialized monographs and journal articles. In over 300 entries written by 80 scholars, this book makes the factual information and historical interpretations of the era readily available. Covering political, military, religious, and constitutional subjects as well as social and economic topics, the volume is easy to use, comprehensive, and authoritative. It provides a useful resource for undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, and educated laymen. Rightly characterized as an age of crisis, the 14th century saw the Hundred Years War, the Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, the Avignon Papacy, and the Great Schism of the Western Church. All placed great stresses on English society, aggravating old problems and creating new ones. In the late Middle Ages, parliament became an important element in English government; Cambridge and Oxford universities attained European-wide reputations; and general literacy increased. The Church remained a paramount religious, political, and social institution, but its independence and intellectual monopoly slipped. The entries in this book synthesize recent scholarship on these and other historical events. While emphasizing political, religious, constitutional and military topics, the book also provides brief introductions to social, economic, cultural, and intellectual topics. It is a valuable guide for those wishing to understand this complex, tumultuous, and until recently, poorly understood era.

Book Description
The cost of a bullet can be as little as eight cents. Assassination has long been more common than anyone (particularly anyone in government) likes to admit—it is the great-untold secret at the heart of the nation-state. As President George W. Bush continues to introduce Hollywood cowboy terminology like “dead or alive” and “bring it on” into our international political discourse, we are entering a new era of assassination where the “eight-cent option” has been given a new and disquieting legitimacy.
Belfield’ s darkly fascinating exposé of the business, its hired killers, and their paymasters, includes excerpts from CIA, Al-Qaeda, and Soviet assassination manuals. Placing the most important hits of our time in their proper historical context and examining the business from a remarkably objective yet honest standpoint, Belfield shows how assassinations, while posited by governments and the United Nations as random, isolated acts of violence, are in fact quietly sanctioned examples of ruthlessly strategic statecraft. He offers an eye-opening account of how Kennedy made the Vietnam War inevitable by the elimination of President Diem; and clear evidence of assassinations where the official version simply is not true, including those of Bobby Kennedy, Yitzhak Rabin, and WPC Yvonne Fletcher.
Customer Reviews:
American Ostrichs.......2006-01-31
This author, Richard Belfield, stepped on a few toes with this book, and as is always the case, an ostrich will cry out when someone tries to pull his/her head out of the sand.
Official documents from the U.S. government, formerly classified as Top Secret and Eyes Only for the President, were recently declassified, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act (http://foia.fbi.gov/). These documents indicate that between October 1960 and April 1961, in Cuba alone, the CIA introduced 75 tons of explosives in 30 secret aerial missions, and 45 tons of weapons and explosives in 31 Marine infiltrations. These materials were used to perpetrate 310 attacks with bombs, derail 6 trains, and set fire to 150 factories and 800 plantations. Between 1959 and 2003, more than 800 terrorist attacks were performed, including 78 bombings against civil populations and 61 airplanes hijacked. (Now you know why the U.S. government was not too keen on putting air marshals on planes. They would have been killing our own CIA agents.) These documents also linked CIA agent and Cuban exile, Luis Posada Carriles, with many terrorist attacks, including the bombing of a Cuban airliner in 1976 that killed 73 people. As for biological aggressions, the African Swine Fever Virus was introduced, forcing the sacrifice of half a million pigs. During the "Reagan and Bush Sr. administrations", the dengue hemorrhagic fever was introduced, affecting about 344,203 persons, with the record case of 11,400 who fell ill in a single day-July 6, 1981.
What nonsense!.......2005-07-18
I am the author of this book. There is not a single conspiracy theory in it. It is meticulously researched and heavily footnoted.
It is actually the case that after a serious of botched assassinations, the KGB were well out of the business by 1980. Don't just take my word for it. It is a matter of historical record. This is also the view of Professor Christopher Andrew of Cambridge University, England, who has written extensively on the subject and is the world authority in this area.
Your anonymous reviewer cites the case of the attempted assassination of the Pope. The facts are these: after a lengthy trial, the accused (who were Bulgarians not Russians) were all acquited as there was no evidence against them. I produced a TV show when we asked Clare Sterling what evidence she had against them. She admitted - on camera - that it was just a "hypothesis", which sounds like a conspiracy theory to me. There is a ton of evidence that she was a CIA propagandist. She is obviously a bit of a heroine to your reviewer but she is a genuine conspiracy theorist. When asked what had happened after they were acquitted, she replied that the very absence of evidence proved that the Russians had done it!
I then detail how the KGB got back in to the business, assassinating Dudayev, the Chechyn leader. So much for political bias!
As a matter of record, I do not implicate the CIA in the assassination of JFK. I make the point that he was a serious advocate of the use of assassination in foreign policy, that this is highly contagious and that the Agency was just one of a long line of people accused. I also make the point that though they plotted to kill him, it does not mean they actually did it.
As for Kennedy/Lumumba, the context here is the use of the word "removal" for assassination. The point is that the Kennedy brothers used it and that it was in widespread use in Washington in the two years before Kennedy became President. I might add that it is also clear from the Church Committee Report, which investigated this, that Kennedy was speaking to the CIA telling them to set up an assassination capability long before he formally took office. A meeting took place at Agency headquarters a week after his Inauguration Speech to establish an "executive action" capability. It was the third meeting of this informal committee.
As for his point about the use of the phrase Soviet Union. Well I could have used the correct title of Commonwealth of Independent States, but quite frankly I don't think many people would know what I was talking about. Calling them Russians is not accurate either. Similarly, I use the title MI6 for the British Intelligence Service even though their correct name is SIS. There are times when understanding is more important.
one sided, sensationalistic, and anecdotal.......2005-07-06
I don't know why I expected more from this book, but it's really not much more than a rehash of existing conspiracy theories. I had hoped he might try to pull together the common threads of all 20th century political murders, and perhaps develop a theoretical approach to the issue of assassination, but he doesn't really do this. He is much more interested in making sensational claims for which there is little evidence.
I was quite amused by the author's one-sided view of the assassination business. In his view, the Soviets tried to pull some incompetent assassinations in the 1950s, but then they pretty much got out of the assassination business after that. He ridicules Claire Sterling's theory that the Soviets were behind international terrorism and assassinations in the 1970s and 1980s (according to him, she was a "CIA propagandist" who fed the world "a steady diet of Cold War nonsense of plots and conspiracies"). But when it comes to American, British, and Israeli assassination plots, his standard of evidence is very different indeed. No dismissive talk of nonsense conspiracy theories there, no sir. In fact, he bends over backwards to connect the CIA or MI5 to every possible political murder and assassination attempt, including Sadat, Princess Diana, Pope John Paul II, the bombing of the La Belle disco, police constable Yvonne Fletcher, Mountbatten, plus of course the usual "biggies" (JFK, RFK, Martin Luther King Jr). So, the author has never met a CIA conspiracy theory he doesn't like, but the Soviets, Cubans, and other left-wing regimes are more or less completely blameless. Get the picture?
It's very difficult to share the author's outrage that the Special Air Service killed some IRA terrorists in Gibraltar in 1988. He spins a theory that MI5 somehow set up the SAS to do the deed... but who cares? The IRA guys might not have been holding guns at the time they were shot, but they were dirty and they deserved what they got. Similarly, I can't share the author's indignation that the US is in the "public assassination business" because it targets al Qaeda leaders with Hellfire missiles. Nor can I agree with the author that this makes the US morally equivalent to the people it is trying to kill.
The book is readable enough, but contains a number of egregious errors that an editor with some historical knowledge should have caught. For example, he talks about the Kennedy brothers "continually kicking" the intelligence community to kill Patrice Lumumba - but Lumumba was killed before JFK took office. He repeatedly refers to Russia in the 1990s as "the Soviet Union". Problems of this sort raise questions about the author's real understanding of his subject.

New uses for old toys.......2002-06-07
My kids got tired of their toys. i got tired of buying them new ones. So I found this book and discovered through it....new uses for the toys they already had. It was like buying all new toys. I cannot recommend this book enough if you don't want to go out and buy new toys. And, it teaches kids the science behind the toys, which is an added benefit.
This is Fun +++++.......2001-03-29
I bought this book at a bookstore and liked the content. It is a very easy to use book to use with children. I have used it with my kindergarten kids and my kids who are older at home. There are so many good ideas and concepts to learn that even we teachers can learn from it! I like the book very much...in fact so much that I am going toget this author's other books through Amazon!
Science in Seconds with Toys.......2001-03-24
My kids got tired of their toys. We do not have the money to buy new ones, so my eye caught this book. I LOVE IT!!!. The book gives a whole new adventure to our kids toys. They not only learned some important science concepts with them...they now look at all of their toys and try to think of other ways to use them. This book saved me money and taught my children some important academics! I highly recommend!

"It's best not to look at the clear cut," Robert Leo Heilman writes, describing his grueling work as a tree planter in the timber country of Oregon. "You stay busy with whatever is in front of you because, like all industrial processes, there is beauty in the details and ugliness in the larger view. Oil film on a rain puddle has an iridescent sheen that is lovely in a way that the junkyard it's part of is not." Heilman's fine collection of essays, which gives the reader an inside look at the society of loggers, environmentalists, and people who never stop laboring while trying to survive, beautifully illuminates the details of the working life. Alternately joyous and heartrending, evocative of Thoreau and Whitman, these essays by a man who has lived the life he writes about, deserve to be read by a wide audience.
Book Description
This is a collection of personal essays by an author who knows what it means to be a logger, tree planter, mill worker and roofer in the "marginal population" of the Umpqua Valley in Oregon. In honest, gritty prose, Heilman writes about the complex relationships between work, nature, family and community at a time when community itself is as endangered as any job or tree.

What Fulghum is to Kindergarten, R.L.H. is to Douglas County.......1999-10-10
As a Douglas County transplant and an English teacher, I relished both Heilman's depictions of life and livelihoods as well as recognized his elevation of the spirit and humanity of this portion of the globe.
One may compare the witty short-takes of Robert Fulghum's "Kindergarten" series and Norman McClean's "River" collection to that of Heilman's "Over-stories".
This collection of writings is refreshingly simple backwoods as well as elevated highbrow. It is both for and about life, as one man has experienced it, told in such a way as to be universal in its appeal and understanding.
I use these stories in my classes to bring the world my students live in within the walls of academia. If nothing else, then to show them that it is possible to enjoy and recognize the beauty of something even when you feel you are surrounded by nothing at all.
