4 out of 5 stars Good, not great resource.......2001-03-15

If you are looking for a job in a specific city, a job bank book is a great way to get started. If you do not currently live in that city and have easy access to their local resources, it is especially valuable. It is a great way to start identifying companies and job search resources in that region. Comapnies are listed by industry and size. Some companies even have HR contacts listed.

But don't expect huge job search boosts from this--the job searching techniques section is not particularly good. As in any successful job search, you still have to pound the pavement to discover the best opportunities.

        Book Description

In the early ‘80s, the music industry wrote off hip-hop as a passing fad. Few could or would have predicted that the improvised raps and raw beats busting out of New York City’s urban underclass would one day become a multimillion-dollar business and one of music’s most lucrative genres.

Among those few were two visionaries: Russell Simmons, a young black man from Hollis, Queens, and Rick Rubin, a Jewish kid from Long Island. Though the two came from different backgrounds, their all-consuming passion for hip-hop brought them together. Soon they would revolutionize the music industry with their groundbreaking label, Def Jam Records.

Def Jam, Inc. traces the company’s incredible rise from the NYU dorm room of nineteen-year-old Rubin (where LL Cool J was discovered on a demo tape) to the powerhouse it is today; from financial struggles and scandals–including The Beastie Boys’s departure from the label and Rubin’s and Simmons’s eventual parting–to revealing anecdotes about artists like Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Foxy Brown, Jay-Z, and DMX.

Stacy Gueraseva, former editor in chief of Russell Simmons’s magazine, Oneworld, had access to the biggest players on the scene, and brings you real conversations and a behind-the-scenes look from a decade–and a company–that turned the music world upside down. She takes you back to New York in the ‘80s, when late-night spots such as Danceteria and Nell’s were burning with young, fresh rappers, and Simmons and Rubin had nothing but a hunch that they were on to something huge.

Far more than just a biography of the two men who made it happen, Def Jam, Inc. is a journey into the world of rap itself. Both an intriguing business history as well as a gritty narrative, here is the definitive book on Def Jam–a must read for any fan of hip-hop as well as all popular-culture junkies.

        3 out of 5 stars Rough Patches.......2007-04-05

I am extremely happy that there is a book that depicts the origination and rise of hip-hop however the sentence structure is quite rough to get through. The reader can flow through paragraphs of events for a couple of pages however, when meeting a new character, the author has a tendency to link various people and companies and sometimes events to that one character, within two sentences. Therefore, it takes the reader some time to figure out if the author is actually talking about the new character or the other items that were linked to the new character.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any avid fan or musician in the industry..........2006-05-09

Rarely do you find a book about the history of the music industry that actually works to make you feel as if you are a part of what is going on. DEF JAM INC. by Stacy Gueraseva is an inspirational take on the creation of not only a new breed of record label, but the ushering in of a completely mindblowing era of music, musicians and moguls. Being a musician I was utterly inspired by this insiders perspective on the rise, fall and subsequent resurrection of the legendary DEF JAM label. The reader is immediately drawn into the lives of this incredible cast of "real-life" characters... You will feel as if you're in that cramped NYU dorm room with Rick and his crew while he's cooking up his scheme for releasing music for and by the local hip-hop DJ. You'll be there in the clubs with Mr. Russell Simmons, hard working and smooth-talking his way to the top. DEF JAM INC. gives you never before seen insight into the heart of the label during it's tough starts and shows the industry from the artist's perspective in ways I've yet to experience elsewhere. Without ruining the read, I just have to say, if you love great music and want to know where hip-hop came from, DEF JAM INC. is an invaluable tool on the path to hip-hop enlightenment... A musician's must have.

5 out of 5 stars The truth about "Def Jam, Inc.".......2006-05-09

As the sister of the author and the designer of the cover for "Def Jam, Inc.," I have witnessed firsthand the creation of this book and I feel compelled to leave a comment. There is a reason this book was called "Book of the Month" by Maxim Magazine, and a "fast-paced history of ingenuity, scandal and pure Hip Hop" by Source Magazine. There is a reason it was selected for the New York Public Library's prestigious 77th annual "Books for the Teen Age" list.

And that reason is- "Def Jam, Inc." is amazing. It accomplishes the most challenging of all tasks- to both entertain and inform. It is a bonafide page-turner, the kind that conjures up cinematic imagery. To get the stories for this book, Stacy had to track down reclusive recording artists like Slick Rick and get them to open up about the past. She spent time with Rick Rubin at his house in LA. She sat in conference rooms for hours, interviewing Lyor Cohen. She rode in limos with Russell Simmons, getting answers from him in between his endless phone calls and emails. And that was the easy part.

The research alone was a monumental task, one that would make many others give up. And the book-writing process required numerous all-nighters and months of blood, sweat and tears. It is hard for someone who hasn't witnessed the writing process to fully understand just how much works goes into it.

But herein lies the payoff- 300 plus pages of remarkable stories, first-person accounts, anecdotes, thrilling hip hop history-- the life and times of a fascinating and exciting record label. The book is written with energy, intelligence, style, passion and respect for the subject. It is a thorough account of every corner of Def Jam's rise- from its executives, to its artists, to even its famous album covers. It is not sensationalistic pulp. Reading "Def Jam, Inc." has opened my eyes to the infinite possibility for personal accomplishment. It is a story of the American Dream like no other. Read it and let inspire you to be better and to live your life to its fullest.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Story but Poorly Written.......2006-05-08

The story of the rise of Def Jam is a fascinating part of hip hop history because, in many respects, it laid the groundwork for hip hop as we know it. Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin are arguably the Wright Brothers of hip hop because they took an artistic genre (rap) and contrary to popular corporate opinion - which did not believe rap would be anything more than a passing fad - made it fly. This book details the rise of Def Jam from its beginning in Rick Rubin's NYU dorm room to the present.

Even though the story is very interesting, the book is poorly written on a number of levels. First, Stacy Gueraseva worked as the Editor-in-Chief for one of Simmons' magazines and her bias to her former employer clearly shows through. There is very little critical analysis of the negative side of this company (e.g. its glorification of violence, guns and the objectification of women).

Second, Gueraseva often fails to tell the entire story of specific characters in the book. For example, the most compelling figure in Def Jam's history is Lyor Cohen, who was with the company for over 20 years and figures prominently throughout the entire story. Unfortunately, the author does not fully explain his personal history (like she does with Rubin and Simmons). We get only tidbits of his personal bio - e.g. he is Israeli, he went to the University of Miami, he is a "family man" now. He is obviosuly different than most people in the Def Jam story but for some unknown reason, the author does not elaborate on his personal story. You get to the point where you want to yell at her "ok, tell us more about him!" but she never does.

Additionally, the author spends a lot of time detailing Def Jam's rise in the 1980s but only gives the post-1995 era a short look. I feel the rise of Jay-Z to President of Def Jam is one of the most interesting developments of Def Jam Era but we only get about 3 paragraphs discussing this part.

Finally, the writing is extremely average. The sentence structure was repetitive and there were several grammatical errors. It was quite noticeable and took away from the flow of the story.

In all, even though this is an interesting story, it deserved a better researched and written history.

          Book Description

From essays about the Salem witch trials to literary uses of ghosts by Twain, Wharton, and Bierce to the cinematic blockbuster The Sixth Sense, this book is the first to survey the importance of ghosts and hauntings in American culture across time. From the Puritans’ conviction that a thousand preternatural beings appear every day before our eyes, to today’s resurgence of spirits in fiction and film, the culture of the United States has been obsessed with ghosts. In each generation, these phantoms in popular culture reflect human anxieties about religion, science, politics, and social issues.
Spectral America asserts that ghosts, whether in oral tradition, literature, or such modern forms as cinema have always been constructions embedded in specific historical contexts and invoked for explicit purposes, often political in nature. The essays address the role of "spectral evidence" during the Salem witch trials, the Puritan belief in good spirits, the convergence of American Spiritualism and technological development in the nineteenth century, the use of the supernatural as a tool of political critique in twentieth-century magic realism, and the "ghosting" of persons living with AIDS. They also discuss ghostly themes in the work of Ambrose Bierce, Edith Wharton, Gloria Naylor, and Stephen King.

1 out of 5 stars The worst of the worst.......2004-02-10

3rd party D20 stuff has never impressed me anyway, but seeing this abomination sinks the industry to a new low. The first one was a bad enough book, but the sequel...let's just put it at PAINFUL. Avoid this book like the plague and maybe we can start to show 3rd party developers that they're going to have to come up with better material than say "The Ultimate Quintessential Legendary Tome to Female Half-Dwarven Half-Thri-Kreen Ninja Paladins"

1 out of 5 stars More trash from Fast Forward. (Warning: A heated Review!).......2004-02-07

Is there justice in this world? How can ANYONE let those fools at Fast Forward games near a d20 again? This book, much like it's predecessor, is a piece of garbage.

Why? All the monsters, sorry 'demons and devils', are EXACTLY like each other. The writers managed to scrape up a few more peasant-scaring beasts for us to hate...

And lets take on the description. Best in the industry? These people are possibly the WORST writers I have ever had the misfortune to read. No, Monte Cook and Skip Williams are the best. Not some pathetic third-party company wasting paper! Acclaimed? Who the heck are you asking? No gamer I met would even touch the books with a ten-foot halberd! How can someone 'loath a beastie' when the thing is so horribly unbalanced it can't attack with out the DM having to fudge a die roll. Everything gamers could've asked for? Who the heck are you talking to? The gaming club for the blind and midly retarted?

ARGH! Stay far, far away from ANY Fast Forward game! One or two, the Encyclopedia of Demons and Devils series is plain AWFUL!!!!

I have tried the AOL's cd that gives free connection for 3 months, and when I wanted to cancel the subscription (because I changed my home address) it was impossible to stop the bank tranfers. As incredible as this may sound, AOL claims that they cannot cancel my subscription because I don't remember my password. Even when I am able to confirm all other information (credit card number, date of birth, social, etc), they refuse the cancel the subscription.
When I talked to my bank, the bank clerk told me that many people have had the same problems with AOL. I have met dozens of people in my University that faced very similar problems with AOL.
AOL has a very bad approach to business and found a easy and certain way of losing customers.

I've used AOL for three years, and this provided an excellent reference. The real reason I purchased this item was as a gift for someone who was just learning AOL. She not only never used AOL before, but also never turned on a computer. With this great reference, she can send email to multiple users, set up and display her buddy list, and change her preferences. While these tasks may sound mundane to seasoned AOLers, this book helped my student become comfortable using AOL.

                          Book Description

This A-to-Z encyclopedia includes entries on women who made pioneering scientific discoveries, as well as others whose work was characterized by lifelong, dogged perseverance. There are professional scientists together with enthusiastic amateurs—all of whom were single-minded in their science-based endeavors.

This book contains entries for approximately 400 women who contributed to scientific development from 1600 to 1950. Those included come from countries around the world (excluding North America, covered in the two volumes of American Women in Science). Scientists from a wide range of fields are included, from aeronauts to zoologists. Each entry is accompanied by a bibliography with full references, enabling the reader to follow up the information given. The book also constitutes a valuable starting point for further research on individual women scientists.

In Humanity, English ethicist Jonathan Glover begins with the now commonplace observation that the last 100 years were perhaps the most brutal in all history. But the problem wasn't that human nature suddenly took a sharp turn for the worse: "It is a myth that barbarism is unique to the twentieth century: the whole of human history includes wars, massacres, and every kind of torture and cruelty," he writes. Technology has made a huge difference, but psychology has remained the same--and this is what Glover seeks to examine, through discussions of Nietzsche, the My Lai atrocity in Vietnam, Hiroshima, tribal genocide in Rwanda, Stalinism, Nazism, and so on.

There is much history here, but Humanity is fundamentally a book of philosophy. In his first chapter, for instance, Glover announces his goal "to replace the thin, mechanical psychology of the Enlightenment with something more complex, something closer to reality." But he also seeks "to defend the Enlightenment hope of a world that is more peaceful and more humane, the hope that by understanding more about ourselves we can do something to create a world with less misery." The result is an odd combination of darkness and light--darkness because the subject matter of the 20th century's moral failings is so bleak, light because of Glover's earnest optimism, which insists that "keeping the past alive may help to prevent atrocities." He cites Stalin's bracing comment, made while signing death warrants: "Who's going to remember all this riff-raff in ten or twenty years' time? No one." At one level, Humanity is a book of remembrance. But it's more than that: it's also an attempt to understand what it is in the human mind that makes moral disaster always loom--and a prayer that this aspect of our psychology might be better controlled. --John J. Miller

                            Book Description

This important book confronts the brutal history of the twentieth century to unravel the psychological mystery of why so many atrocities occurred--the Holocaust, Hiroshima, the Gulag, Cambodia, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and others--and how we can prevent their recurrence. Jonathan Glover finds disturbing similarities in the psychology of those involved with atrocities, yet offers hope that the development of a political and personal moral imagination can empower us to resist all acts of cruelty.

2 out of 5 stars Tendentious and dull.......2007-10-01

For anyone who hasn't lived through the last 50+ years, this may be a useful review of all the terrible things that have happened and mistakes made. For those who've been aware citizens, it's on the dull side.

5 out of 5 stars Humanism in the 20th century.......2006-03-05

A good description of major political and moral issues and problems in the 20 century. Written prior to September 11.

5 out of 5 stars An immoral history.......2004-12-03

Glover's book travels some well-worn ground but in a way that cleans the moral mirror and forces the reader to take a long, hard look at the dangerous steps, often baby steps, that have preceded horrific events. I appreciated the way Glover's writing reached across the lines of various disciplines, not in a pretentious way, but so as to demonstrate that all of the ways we have learned to think about human behaviour must be mobilized to look ourselves in the face. This book breathes depth into the title Chris Browning chose for his groundbreaking work, _Ordinary Men_. A disturbing but stimulating book.

2 out of 5 stars Better on history than philosophy.......2002-05-02

Readers who pick up this book probably think they are going to be reading a discussion centering on ethical thinking in the 20th century with some mention of historical events. Not entirely so. This book is more a compendium of the great mass murders of the 20th century with some comments on the abuse of the enlightenment and Nietzsche.

Glover gives cursory descriptions of the atrocities in Nazi Germany, the USSR, Rwanda, Cambodia, and Yugoslavia (Nothing about the murder of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, though.) He also discusses World War One, the My Lai massacre, Hiroshima and the Cuban missile crisis. In a way, the book is a kind of Cliff's Notes for these 20th century events. He doesn't offer anything new, but if you didn't take a contemporary history course or haven't been reading the newspapers, this is a book for you.

A problem with this book is that Glover feels most comfortable on well-trod ground. There doesn't seem to be nearly so many books about, say, Rwanda as there are on Nazi Germany, but still most of the book is about Nazi Germany. Glover notes that Stalin and Mao (and proportionally to the population, Pol Pot) were responsible for more deaths than Hitler and Himmler, but Nazism still has "a unique moral horror." Perhaps so, but the reader may also feel that Glover spends so much space on Nazism because there is so much more material to mine. Indeed, he doesn't reach far for his material. His sources include William Shirer, Hannah Arendt, Robert Conquest and Barbara Tuchman. Even the reader who hasn't read much contemporary history will have a feeling of déjà vu.

Like Allan Bloom, Glover portrays Nietzsche as the villain of the 20th century. Partially because Nietzsche urged men to be hard and to close their eyes to pity, Hitler and Stalin did just that. This might be true in Hitler's case, but is it true in Stalin's, Mao's, and Pol Pot's? For them, wasn't Marx, who is barely discussed here, more of an influence? Did Nietzsche also help cause the genocide in Rwanda and was Lt. William Calley thinking about "Also sprach Zarathustra" as he led his men into My Lai? Glover does mention Heidegger, but he is more interested in Heidegger's vanity and willingness to use the Nazis for career advancement than in his influential but "nebulous and elusive" philosophy.

Didn't Cambodia or Yugoslavia or Rwanda also have native philosophers who prepared the ground for disaster or who became collaborators when the murderous regimes came to power? There isn't much about them here. Although this book is supposed to be a "moral history" of the 20th century, the summaries of events are better than the summaries of ethical influences on these historical events.

If someone were really interested in learning about the terrible events of the 20th century, he or she would first skip to the back of the book and go find the materials that Glover used as references. After reading those, the reader would look for still more books. Alone this book will suffice only for those who want a thumbnail sketch of the terrors of the last century.

3 out of 5 stars WOW, the obvious!.......2002-04-11

If you want to read a 400 page book that will state and re-state obvious truths that any thinking person has reached considering man's inhumanity to man, then buy this book! It does have some impressive journalistic history of genocides, and correctly places Maoist China in there unlike many such works, but it is very repetitive and though Glover is supposed to be a philosopher one will find nothing ethically challenging here (did you know genocide is wrong? DUH).

From the supplier: Wood products companies and environmental organizations are at odds as to the effects timber logging has on the world's tropical forests. Industry groups, backed by some universities and scientific researchers, contend that logging does not result in deforestation and that, on the contrary, it helps provide people with jobs and encourages the adoption of forest sustainability practices. Environmental groups, however, refuse to accept these arguments, saying that logging opens huge tracts of forests to other destructive activities.
