        Book Description

Darryl Trimiew examines current and historical debates regarding economic rights. What is our obligation to the poor, and how are economic rights related to civil and political rights? Beginning with the debate that surrounded President Jimmy Carter's support of economic rights, Trimiew reviews and answers the objections of those who would deny economic rights, and in the process articulates the positions of such figures as Henry Shue, Alan Gewirth, David Hollenbach, and Nicholas Wolterstorff. In addition, he argues that rights based on religion are finally more adequate than those based on purely political grounds. How we as a nation treat the poor goes far towards defining what America is. In this provocative book, Trimiew calls for a renewed obligation to the poor in a way that recognizes the interdependency of economic, political and civil rights.

          5 out of 5 stars A Great Learning Tool.......2007-02-24

My class required the textbook, but the teacher never used the book. However, I learned a lot by reading the book myself, because the teacher never explained the fine details of arranging instrument parts.

This book gets two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars The Technique of Orchestration.......2007-02-23

Thorough and masterful work. Suitable for the beginners as well as for the advanced.

3 out of 5 stars Good book... but expensive.......2007-01-09

It has a nice amount of information, but the price could be half what is costs, considering its size. It is useful, but I see no reason why it costs so much. Half the price should be the right amount, this is the reason it only gets three stars. The problem is: technical books are too expensive, if you check other books in the same subject (music, orchestration, composition, harmony) you will see for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic text, but needs some updating.......2006-09-26

I have taught Orchestration/Instrumentation three times using this book, and find it has its strengths and weaknesses. The practical information about each instrument--such as ranges, typical scorings, and excerpts--are helpful, and I think Kennan really focuses on what an arranger/orchestrator *needs* to know. I also like some of the accompanying examples/excercises in the workbook, which can save preparation time. On the negative side, there are numerous typos in the workbook that still haven't been changed through multiple editions, the photos are quite dated, saxophone is included in a chapter called "Infrequently Used Instruments" (perhaps in the orchestra, but not in band music, the subject of some discussion in the book), and some of the discussions are confusing for students (string harmonics, to take one example). While the CD is helpful for hearing subtle differences in orchestration, the orchestra is out of tune in several places and the sound quality is somewhat poor.

Overall, I think Kennan's book is good for the beginning orchestration student, with lots of practical information and exercises, but I wish that some of its more problematic aspects could be changed or updated.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful text for study and reference with a very useful CD.......2006-03-14

We used the second edition of this book when I was an undergraduate studying music theory. I loved that book and have always had it on my shelf as a reference for correct transpositions, ranges, and all the little things one needs to know to write correctly for an instrument. When I read through this edition I was simply blown away. You know how you can get attached to an older edition and not want to give it up because the improvements don't overcome the familiarity? Well, the sixth edition clearly obsoletes my trusty old friend.

The book still has the same general format in considering each family of instruments together and has all the good information of the previous editions. However, there is more information, better photographs, improved explanations, well chosen examples, great suggested readings, listenings, and assignments. And the included CD has over 90 short examples of the sounds any orchestrator needs to have in his or her mind when putting pen to paper (or pointing a mouse to the staff on a computer). The first few dozen are different versions of the same two measures of the Bach chorale designated in the book so the student can compare a variety of ways to set that four part chorale for various families of instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass, and in various combinations). Then several dozen orchestral chords of various combinations are provided. Every example is designated in the book and explicitly identified on the CD.

The appendices are also quite useful and contain ready references on ranges and specialized considerations. I especially appreciate the addition of vocal ranges since it is quite common to use voices with orchestras.

This is a terrific text for students, for teachers because the information is so well presented, and for reference after school. Heck, if all you do is read orchestral scores while listening to music, this book can be most helpful in helping you understand the instruments you are hearing and their transpositions.

          Most wonderfully done.

          Book Description

A confession is a dangerous gift — at times poisonous, at times exhilarating. Here writers explore the devastating or invigorating outcomes of sexual confessions. From the gigolo who finds his conscience upon baring his soul, to the "other woman" who comes clean (to her lover's wife!), the results of confessions range from hilarious to life-altering. Among the writers included are Hugo- and Nebula-award-winner Mike Resnick; the poster child of self-publishing success, M.J. Rose; horror and erotica writer Lucy Taylor; Bram Stoker- and Aurora Award-winner Edo van Belkom; Maxim Jakubowski, Marilyn Jaye Lewis, Stephen Dedman and many others.

Through stories and essays, Confessions explores compelling questions such as:
          • What makes a person confess and how does that simple, deliberate act affect sexual decisions going forward?
          • Do confessions feed or starve the libido?
          • Is sex better if one lives with guilt or spills one's guts?
          • Are some sexual errors in judgment best left ignored? If so, which ones?
          • When is the payoff for confession better than the silence?
          • What role do confessions have in sex play?

I'm a fan of a number of authors in this book and their stories did not fail to impress me: M. Christian, Marilyn Jaye Lewis, Stephen Dedman, Sage Vivant, Lucy Taylor, Maxim Jakubowski. Great stuff. A handful of stories, however, were pretty awful and if it weren't for those, I could have given this book five stars. I'm still wondering how "Odd Habit" ever got into this book (or published at all)... It's a really ridiculous story. Overall, there are some excellent stories in the book, but beware of the two or three duds.

          2 out of 5 stars S A D L Y.......D I S A P P O I N T I N G.......2007-05-17

I was very sadly disappointed by this book. I had bought, (and truly
enjoyed) Mr. Ellison's GAMBLE TO WIN: ROULETTE book......and expected
this volume to be a compendium-reprint of it, and Mr. Ellison's other
gaming books, in slightly smaller print. A compendium book would obviously save me money, and since I had enjoyed Mr. Ellison's GAMBLE TO WIN ROULETTE book so much, I decided to buy this one, and see what he had to see about other games, too.... I looked forward to being entertained and instructed on how to play these other games, as well as reviewing Mr. Ellison's views on roulette.....

This turned out not to be what happened. This book is not a compendium, but a re-write, (in the roulette section), and a set of confusing explainations (in other games' sections). In the roulette section, gone
was the humourous aside of what to do if an alien invades your casino, or
at-home game. Gone, too, were the clear explainations of how to play the game and how to win. In place were complicated meanderings that were so complex and incomprehensible, that I wondered if this had really been written by the same person whose other book I had enjoyed so much! I didn't dare waste my time of what I feared would be similarly confusing if not incomprehensible explainations of other games........

The only good thing I can say about this book is that, being a hard-cover volume, it gives a PICTURE of Mr. Ellison, as the soft-cover GAMBLE TO WIN; ROULETTE book, did not. From the wisdom imparted in the Roulette book, I had expected Mr. Ellison to be at least 45, and perhaps balding and paunchy. How delighted I was to discover that, from the picture on the jacket, he appears to be far younger, and quite handsome, as well!
I look forward to his writing many more books, (baccarat, blackjack and slots await!), and I earnestly hope that they are given the humourous, erudite, and hightly intelligent treatment given in his Roulette book....and not the over-complicated meanderings, disappointingly found here.

1 out of 5 stars One of the most asinine books I've seen.......2005-11-21

After correctly stating that random events are independent of each other, the author spends the rest of the book directly contradicting this, claiming that there are "trends," that some tables are "hot" or "cold," etc. This is claiming that past random events really do affect future ones -- the book is a rehash of the old "gambler's fallacy." In reality, the odds on a spin of the wheel or a roll of the dice never, ever, ever, ever, change. There's no such thing as a "hot" table or a "trend."

All you really need to know is the formula for EV (expected value). It is:

          ((probability x payout)-bet)/bet

If the number is negative, it's a bad bet.

If you want to gamble, read some poker books, get some good poker software and practice, practice, practice. IF you're good, you can beat the rake (and the other players). All other casino games are losing propositions, period.

5 out of 5 stars By very far the best book on gambling I have ever read........2001-09-13

This book is a pleasure to read. Ellison describes the psychology and mechanics of gambling better than any other author I have read. He is a superior writer. It's been painful for me to read Patrick, Scoblete, Grafstein etc.-really very painful. I enjoy Ellison because he is a refined intelligence reporting clearly and elegantly from what is after all, a sewer of sorts. Gambling is not a good thing. Gambling is related inevitably to moral and emotional degeneracy. Naturally, I enjoy it as often as I can. Ellison writes as a literate gentleman for the great unwashed hordes-wonderful dissection of the underbelly of the beast that is gambling. Mr. Ellison, hang on to that pen.

5 out of 5 stars Teaches you how NOT to lose!.......2001-02-05

This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in playing seriously. True, the author does not give you a specific system to use. He gives you much more! He gives you all the tools you'll need to survive the mighty opponent we call the casino. He teaches you how not to lose first, which by my experience and other pro-gamblers I have spoken to, is MORE important that how to win. If you can control yourself, your urges and recognize the casinos weapons against you, you are on your way to winning. Now, that being said....he does give plenty of information, advice and a few strategies on how to win. In one section of the book, he teaches you how to build a large bankroll from $100 sessions in stages and outlines exactly how to do that. I am a much better gambler because of it.

1 out of 5 stars The wrong path.......2000-09-07

If you want to play games of complete chance, there are any number of books available through Amazon or elsewhere that can explain how these games work and how one plays them. Ellison does some of this, but then spends much of his book talking about how to "spot patterns" and how such nonsense can be used to "beat the house" at games like roulette and craps.

          Nonsense.

Spend your money wisely, and buy a book that shoots straight. Ellison's "wise guy" tips will only make one person wealthier-- Ellison.

If you are tired of cloudy, non-specific examples relating to security, this book is great. It details, with examples, exactly how to perform security functions. I use it for a research group I am heading (www.nmt.edu/~ccravens) and it is definitely an incredible find for our purposes.

4 out of 5 stars A good purchase if you don't have the first edition.......2004-06-03

I reviewed the first edition "Anti-Hacker Tool Kit" (AHT:1E) in August 2002. This second edition (AHT:2E) follows only 18 months after the original was published. I don't believe enough time has passed to warrant an update, even though tools can evolve quickly. In certain aspects the book suffers from a lack of updates from AHT:1E author Keith Jones, who found the publisher's demands onerous. Nevertheless, AHT:2E is a must-buy if you didn't read AHT:1E.

The major additions to AHT:2E include a new chapter on firewalls, which doesn't really add anything new to the common body of security knowledge. A new chapter on host hardening covers Titan and MSec. Tools like THC-Amap, THC-Hydra, HFNetChk, Ettercap, Wellenreiter, and Kismet make appearances as well. Whereas Trinux was only mentioned in the first edition, it gets welcome coverage in the chapter on building live response bootable CDs. Updated material on Nmap, NetScan Tools, SuperScan, Scanline, and commercial forensic suites is included.

The remainder of the book is largely the same. Particularly, chapters on Netcat, X, VMWare, Cygwin, backdoors, source code auditing, port redirection, war dialers, and open source forensics appear very similar to AHT:1E. Deleted from AHT:2E are Whisker, Twwwscan/Arirang, SMBGrind, and Nbaudit. Comparisons with the first edition are somewhat complicated by the rearrangement of tools and chapters in AHT:2E, but I thought the new organization made sense.

Aside from the information on using Trinux, AHT:2E seemed to lack new contributions from an author with real forensic experience. Keith Jones' original material is still present, but advancements in the forensic arena are not covered. For example, AHT:2E should have addressed Keith's tools in the Odessa project, such as Galleta (cookie parsing), Pasco (IE history recovery), and Rifiuti (Recycle Bin examination).

Overall, AHT:2E is an excellent book, but I don't believe a second edition was needed 18 months after the first was published. The AHT look and feel has spawned the "Anti-Spam Tool Kit," which I plan to read and review shortly. Perhaps future AHT books will split out various sections (assessment, forensics, etc.) into separate volumes, making it easier to manage the series.

3 out of 5 stars OK as reference.......2004-05-12

While reviewing the second edition of the AntiHacker Toolkit, I managed to keep my general disdain towards tool books (see my review for a first edition) in check. Thus, I managed to find the book more valuable than the first edition.

I liked that the authors framed the book as being "about tools" and not "about security". The book will not teach you security concepts, but rather what the current tools are and (to some extent) how to use them.

The book offers coverage of Windows and UNIX, attack and defense (and investigation) tools. As the authors state, it does indeed make a good companion for "Incident Response" by providing a bit more details on the tools. Reading up on the methodologies before starting on the tools is a good idea.

I also liked that they highlighted the changes and new material added for the second edition. However, if the book offers to cover a laundry list of tools, some omissions look pretty suspicious. Where is Bastille in "Host Hardening"? Where is "scanrand" in scanners? Some tools (such as Nessus and Snort as well as commercial scanners) would have justified a bit more details (due to their relative complexity and diverse functionality).

The book will make a valuable addition to a library of a security professional. Although most or even all of the information there is available online after some googling, having it in one place is not a bad idea.

Anton Chuvakin, Ph.D., GCIA, GCIH is a Senior Security Analyst with a major security information management company. He is the author of the book "Security Warrior" (O'Reilly, 2004). His areas of infosec expertise include intrusion detection, UNIX security, forensics, honeypots, etc. In his spare time, he maintains his security portal info-secure.org

            3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm........2003-11-12

Does it concern anyone else that every prior review was written with third-grade English?

I haven't actually read the book, though it seems to be a re-hash of every other security/hacking/cracking book on the shelf. In fact, virtually every "hacking" book on the shelf at Borders and B&N seems to recount the same basic tenets, and yet... still more emerge.

I guess I need to write my own book, eh?

                Book Description

In Waiting for Godot in Sarajevo, David Toole seeks to come to terms with what it means to live a life of dignity in a world of undeniable suffering. Using as his backdrop Susan Sontag's staging of Act I of Waiting for Godot in war-torn Sarajevo, Toole skillfully weaves together Friedrich Nietzsche's views on nihilism with Michel Foucault's analysis of power to produce a politics of tragedy, or what Toole calls a "politics of dying." Such politics are then used to shed new theological light on the Christian apocalypse and what it means to be alive at the end of the twentieth century. In making his argument, Toole draws innovative connections between such diverse figures as John Milbank, Alasdair MacIntyre, Euripides, John Howard Yoder, and Norman Maclean (author of A River Runs Through It and Young Men and Fire), all the while using Beckett's play as a compass for his direction. The end result is a fascinating, eminently readable, unexpectedly adventurous theological inquiry into the meaning of life.

4 out of 5 stars Toole's writing is both clear and illuminating........2000-07-29

This is not a book for those who want to live a comfortable life, avoiding sorrow and despair at all costs. It is instead a moving work intended for readers who have either experienced the suffering in this fractured world or who are compelled to know more in general about the human condition.

In Waiting for Godot in Sarajevo David Toole portrays a world fraught with endless and often escalating conflicts, a world pregnant with pain and death. He seeks to answer the pensive questions: How do we come to grips with the endless suffering in this world? How can we live a good life in the face of suffering Toole answers by telling us that, in today's world, we are confronted with three alternatives from which we can choose: despair (nihilism), tragic resignation (fatalism) or hope (apocalyptic faith).

The opening chapter of this book is set in 1993 Sarajevo, Bosnia, at the height of the slaughter and carnage. Taking place is the stage performance of Samuel Beckett's play "Waiting for Godot." Susan Sontag directs this work during a time when Sarajevo was both battlefield and concentration camp. "Waiting for Godot" is a powerful play that depicts tragic politics, the art of suffering, dying and, of course, the eternal waiting that accompanies suffering. Godot, for whom the cast waits, represents hope, a potential redeemer.

In Toole's words, "I began in Sarajevo and that Sarajevo both is and metaphorically represents a world of suffering." This suffering is simply another instance of the unfolding in nihilism that Nietzsche declared would be the distinguishing mark of both the 20th and 21st centuries - Sarajevo depicts for us the despair of radical nihilism."

Make no mistake, this is not a summer-day-at-the-beach read as the text is complex and challenging. Toole deals with the philosophy of great minds and thinkers such as the following: Fredrick Nietzsche, Martin Heideggar, Michael Gillespie, John Milbank, John H. Yoder and Michael Foucault. However, do not despair, Toole's writing is both clear and illuminating. He has done us a valuable service as he spurns today's doomsayers who proclaim "this world is a world with no bounds, no constraints and a world run amok." He challenges us to believe in a life that has meaning, dignity and God's presence. Recommended

                5 out of 5 stars A must-read book on Christianity and the 20th Century........1998-12-11

David Toole's book is an outstanding contribution to a world struggling to reconcile the fundamental tenets of Christianity with a modernized (some would say post-modernized) materialist, and secular world. Indeed, for all our church going etc., we are a society that will not think twice about desecrating creation to put up yet another strip-mall.

What Toole's book so clearly and so provacatively demonstrates is the philosophical underpinnings that have lead to our more dominant and invisible ideologies. Rather than trotting out a history of philosophical thought and putting a bunch of dead white guys through their paces, Toole deftly organizes his discussion thematically, bringing together brilliant historical/cultural analysis with modern philosophical thought and theological insight. In the process, Toole has written what is perhaps the most nuanced--and clear-- presentation of Nietzsche in the English language. Most scholars would give their arm to have accomplished that. Toole goes even further. In linking together philosophy, history, and theology, Toole provides an insiteful, and downright stunning analysis of our contemporary "global society".

Not since Ched Meyer's "Binding the Strongman" has there been such bold undertaking to resituate christianity's profound political dimensions with how we live and think--it should be on the bookshelf of every activist-christian who is concerned about the world and taking a moral position in it.

The only thing confusing about this book is why it is not getting enormous readership. Although Nietzshe, Foucault, and Beckett do not exactly make for light reading, Toole's clarity and poetic vision make this an enormously accessible and engaging read. This is the book that the New Yorker crowd should be discussing as a way out of dead-end secularism and materialism. Reviewing it in under 1,000 words is almost impossible. It cannot be discussed enough.

                  Book Description

The equation has come to embody the mystery and terror of modern science. It Must Be Beautiful is a wide-ranging collection of writings that lift the lid on some of the most influential — and notorious — equations of all time. This book brings together gifted scientists and writers, including Nobel Prize winners, to interpret the scientific work of the 20th century and place it in historical perspective. Each essay presents the essence of an equation, explains why it is fundamental, defines its scope and limitations, and finally states its importance in the wider intellectual and popular culture.

3 out of 5 stars Good biography, mixed science.......2007-03-15

This is very much a mixed bag. There are many interesting anecdotes and lots
of biographical information. There are many glimpses of science and good descriptions
of scientific controversies. Feuds. About half the essays are about theoretical
                  physics.

The essays vary considerably in their attention to the equation that is supposed to be the
subject of the essay. In some, it really is the subject. In others, the equation could have
been omitted and a little editing would allow the essay to be published in a different book
                  about science.

The Drake equation does not even belong in the book, since it is not a great equation of
modern science. It is an example of a technique widely used in engineering and business,
particularly in estimating and forecasting. But the debates over the factors in it were
interesting, and the SETI effort is science. Even failures can advance science.

The "Environmental Fairy Tale" about the Molina-Rowland chemical equation has some good
science, but so much propaganda that I came to doubt much of what I thought
I had just learned. Gaia theory is mentioned without doubting it. The precautionary
principle is mentioned as a good thing. The recent warming trend is clearly blamed on us.

Equations means mathematics, but there is not much math. In one place there is an attempt
to explain the subscripts of a tensor, while elsewhere the idea of a logarithm is explained
                  every time it is used.

Most readers that would consider any book about science will probably find portions they like
and parts they dislike. Be cautious about the average rating of this book. One review is
present twice, and one three times.

5 out of 5 stars 'It Must Be Beautiful" is truly BEAUTIFUL.......2006-08-17

This book is written so that anyone with a general science background can understand the importance of the work and discoveries of these great minds. It demonstrates how their work has played a strategic roll in the historical events of our time and how it may affect the very future of mankind.
Besides analyzing the studies and writtings of these scientists, the book also gives us a very good description of their character and personality. One actually feels a personnel contact with each of them their unique traits are so carefully described. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in science or history and to every college and high school student.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the read - some excellent contributors !.......2003-10-31

At first I was disappointed - the most beautiful equation in the world, e^i.pi = -1, was missing! As I read the book, I looked back at the title : great equations of Modern Science, not of Modern Mathematics. And indeed that is what the book is.
However I do have a few criticisms :
I knew by reputation only 2 of the 12 authors - who were the other people? Long after I had searched out their biographies on the web, I found them at the front of the book - but before the title page rather than after - how strange to put them there, or not at the back of the book ?
I didn't think the Drake equation was that `great' - and in Oliver Morton's chapter he places the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Costa Rica when in fact its in Puerto Rico.
In the opening chapter, Graham Farmelo briefly alludes to `British Astronomers announcing their results' without explaining what it was they were looking for and what they found? Only in the later chapters by Peter Galison & Roger Penrose respectively do they take pains to explain that Sir Arthur Eddington measured the bending of starlight during an eclipse.
I was confused in the chapter on Schrodingers Wave Equation - it didn't describe the form I was familiar with. Then in the notes at the end of the book Arthur Miller explained the more general form - and confessed that the `time' element had been ignored - rather a strange omission in my opinion.
Shannons Equations & the Logistic Map were both new to me - and very interesting they were.

This book had some of the best insight on equatiion form i have read in the rescent past.I could read larger sections of it without haviong to go grab a bottle of asprin. The insight it gave on the personal lives and how the evolution of the equation came to be from raw base form to what we learn now is amazing. The sections on Diracs eqaution I found the most intresting. I would reccommend this book to anyone intrested in math and not just the text book side. It takes almost and artistic veiw on math which i have never seen before. Very intresting .

                  5 out of 5 stars It is!.......2003-03-03

The quantities on the two side of each of the equations in the book, are from science, or from life. The equations result from scientific experiments or from pure theory. Planck's equation signaled the start of atomic physics, and Einstein's E=m c^2 , the continuation. Dirac's equation reveals the secrets of the electron. All the equations predict physical reality; and yet they are strikingly simple to state, perhaps not to fully understand.-- They *are* beautiful! . Really! They are also fundamental discoveries that affect us all. Schrodinger's equation [along with the equivalt formulation of Heisenberg] puts quantum theory on a solid footing, and started wave mechanics. Shannon's equations initiated the age of information technology. And there are more: relativity, astronomy, dynamics, chemestry... The book consists of chapters written by authorities in the field, Roger Penrose, Steven Weinberg..., but no [or at least very little] knowledge of science is assumed on the part of the reader. Highly recommended!
