It's a wonderful book. Really the Anointing ofGod was upon the Author while he was writing this book. It explain simply but deeply what music is and the purpouse it was created for and how the enemy corrupted it and is using it to steal souls from God's Kingdom. And, finally, it makes you know how you are supposed to use music to bring praise and worship to the Almighty God.

Though I bought a copy of this tantalizing book sometime ago, I still relish it as a tremendous job by Sullivan, whose Glamour Girls Then and Now is also proof of the man's excellent work in the field of covering glamour goddesses.

50`s nostalgia........2001-06-28

Thanks to this book I could finally put a face on some names. Some were totally unknown to me.My favorite? Jennie Lee! I `ve read articles about her before but this book helped me to find out more about her.She`s plump BUT so sexy. All the ladies are not especially charming for me.If you are a fan of the 50`s glamour girls this book is for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed Steve Sullivan's book on some forgotten glamour gals of the 50's and 60's.I particularly enjoyed reading about Joy Harmon and Cynthia Myers.Joy Harmon was an adolescent fantasy of mine ever since she popped out of her clothes in "Village of the Giants."Myers may have been beautiful,but she proves she's no brain surgeon when she states that she went to the Democratic convention in Chicago in 1968 and met Adlai Stevenson.He'd been dead 3 years by then!Oh,well.All in all,an excellent book!

A delicious slice of nostalgia.......2000-03-19

It all begins with the cover. It is classically, quintessentially 1950s: a gorgeous, nearly-nude blonde pin-up, sun-kissed, radiant, wanting nothing more in the world than to please me. This delightful photo by Bunny Yeager sets the perfect tone for "Bombshells," a wonderfully entertaining book that takes us back in time to a more innocent age and the glamorous gals of the '50s and '60s.

Steve Sullivan's full-length chapters on 10 pin-up favorites of that era includes some of my personal all-time favorites. Cynthia Myers, Playboy's Miss December 1968, was one of the most astonishingly beautiful women ever immortalized in a centerfold, and co-starred in the best movie Russ Meyer ever made, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." Her chapter gives us more insight into this compelling lady than we've ever been granted before, and the photos--including three of her classic Playboy images--make the book worthwhile in themselves.

Yvette Vickers--so fondly recalled by "camp" movie lovers for "Attack of the 50-Foot Woman" and "Attack of the Giant Leeches"--has had a truly remarkable life both in Hollywood and in her many celebrity love affairs (Cary Grant among them). It's a story worthy of an entire book, but until that happens her chapter in "Bombshells" will be definitive. The photos are absolutely irresistible, too.

I thought no one else would remember Sabrina, the bodacious, outrageous "Jayne Mansfield of Britain," but thankfully Steve Sullivan does, and tells me things I never knew about this explosive blonde dynamo. And Joy Harmon! How could anyone who's ever seen the classic chain-gang scene in "Cool Hand Luke" forget that tormenting blonde played by Joy? I was unaware of the wide range of other parts she played as well, and about how she grappled with the "Bosom Mania" culture of her time, until reading her chapter.

"Bombshells" is a book that brings back a flood of fond memories, gives us rich anecdotes we'd never heard before, and dazzles the eye with its sizzling photo images. Anyone who loves the pop culture of the '50s and '60s, and glamour girls in general, will love this book.

One Thumb Halfway Up.......2000-02-28

I share Steve Sullivan's fascination for glamour girls, but was rather disappointed in the women he selected for this book. Virginia Bell was singularly unattractive and has been justifiably forgotten; Cynthia Myers was an overrated and depraved doxy, ideal for the usually vulgar Hugh Hefner and the always vulgar Russ Meyers; Sabrina was, at best, a third-tier entertainer; and I've never understood why Sheree North was considered even remotely attractive. The book is saved, at least to some degree, by the chapters on more interesting women -- e.g., Yvette Vickers.

Sullivan's criteria for his selection is a mystery. To be sure, there are glamorous women other than Monroe and Mansfield worth writing about, and they can be from the second tier, such as Sue Ane Langdon. But why focus on what amounts to the bottom of the barrel? A pity.

I got this book for my PC Technology Class, I've used it for 2 weeks, and I just hate this book. The thing that gets me mad the most is that its ALL OVER THE PLACE. They'll be talking about the BIOS, then go to expansion slots for like 3 pages, and then go back to Bios's again (pg 197-208). It's very confusing to follow, they should have sections, instead of cramming everything without header titles. The only good thing I like about it is that is has a lot of info, but if you have the time, and patience to find it, then this book is probably OK for you.

Just In Time.......2006-03-10

Taking a computer class one night a week is more than enough for any average person w/ a full-time job. After the registration, the school location and the reality of how much books cost new these days. Amazon came through for me a week before class and this was after tracking all the various campuses and tips from friends. Buying the book used same me easily $30 to $40. The is in great condition, you would of thought it was new.

Good resource, but only to a point. . ........2006-02-17

I enrolled in an online course with Thomson Education Direct (which has recently changed to Penn Foster). The course was designed to prepare me to pass the A+ exam and this textbook was part of the package I received after I graduated. The book is loaded with information and includes end-of-chapter questions and exercises to help you prepare for the A+ exam, plus a CD with further instructional material and test questions. I take the tests first thing, to see where I stand, and find that, unfortunately, the test questions are riddled with mistakes, but I think, No problem. Though the book is a fifth edition, the CD is probably a new thing and that could account for the mistakes. I'll just use the textbook to check the test questions and make sure they're correct.

Unfortunately, the textbook, because it is designed to be used in a classroom setting, provides no answers for the end-of-chapter questions and exercises, so if you're studying independently, it's impossible to check your work to make sure you're correct. I thought, No problem. The student manual lists an instructor's edition which comes with an Electronic Instructor's Manual, Solutions to all the end of chapter material, ExamView, PowerPoint presentations, Figure Files and a Daily Lesson Planner. All you have to do, according to the ad, is go to the listed website (http://www.course.com/pcrepair). So, I go to the site, type the author's name, Jean Andrews, into the search box, up comes the book, and I order it, no sweat. With shipping it runs right around $83.00, a lot for a book, but since it will prepare me for the A+, I'm willing to spend the money.

Unfortunately, it's a waste. The book that arrives is exactly like the student's manual I already have, no answers to any questions at all. I think, No problem. I'll just call customer service to see when the additional resources are going to arrive.

Unfortunately, I am told I can't get the additional resources, because I am not an instructor. Not only that, I learn that because I am a private buyer, I cannot send the Instructor's Edition back and get a refund. Two facts they fail to mention on either the website or in the student's text. I am also informed that the additional resources, supposedly included with the textbook, come at an additional cost. I think, Now, we've got a problem. I'm out $83.00, and Thomson's attitude seems to be "Too bad, so sad." Not exactly what I expect when this entire misunderstanding is due to their faulty advertising.

I'm sorry I ever ran across Thomson, if this is the best they can do for their customers. They seem to be a lot more concerned with preventing cheating than helping someone get certified, because this textbook was provided to me AFTER I graduated from their course when the resources that could help me answer the questions were no longer available to me. Also, you have to wonder, if all the instructor's resources aren't available to the average joe, why are they listed in the student's manual with a source where you can buy them? When I get my A+ certification, I'm sorry to say it will be in spite of Thomson, not because of them.

This book was required for a hardware class I was taking at a local community college. There are literally dozens of books that cover the A+ objectives that are FAR better than this one. I didn't care for how the book was organized, it seemed to jump from topic to topic with no logical pattern. I suggest Michael Meyers All-In-One A+ Certification Exam Guide.

Diamond, industry's essential element.......2006-08-30

People have been fascinated by diamonds for centuries, and scientists tried for about a century to produce them in a laboratory for about a century before they succeeded in a General Electric lab in 1954. This is the story of that quest. It is told with a liveliness and thoroughness quite unusual and delightful. Hazen describe the failed attempts of the early researchers, in some detail, and shows how one of the legends taught to me long ago as a child are bogus. Moissan could not have produced diamonds by the method he described.

The story of Charles Parsons' (the inventor of the steam turbine) attempts was new to me and made me respect him all the more. Thirty years of failed attempts by one of the foremost mechanics of the early twentieth century showed the world just how challenging the synthesis was. Hazen gives a lively account of Percy Bridgeman's exploits in opening up the whole field of high pressure research to systematic study. His clever double-piston apparatus is clearly described, and I was entertained to learn how he published a couple of papers on how to measure pressure in it without divulging its geometry.

The final breakthrough by Hall and coworkers at GE is described in some detail, and the controversy over credits and rewards is laid out for all it is worth. The personalities and their foibles and eccentricities of giants are always quite something. I hugely enjoyed this, and wound up sympathizing with Hall. Then Hazen goes into the modern developments of the scale-up to a quite profitable business, which is very impressive stuff. This is all still developing and changing decades later, and Hazen even includes some well-informed speculation on the importance of the newer vapor phase processes as well.

I really enjoyed the fact that the book included lots of pictures and diagrams of the apparatus. Adds a lot. This is thrilling science and you'd have to be quite the cynic to think otherwise.

Informative history of man-made diamond.......2000-10-04

In this book Mr. Hazen presents a comprehensive, interesting, and fair history of the development of synthetic diamond. His treatment of some of the controversial historic elements is even-handed and accurate and he presents complex scientific information in a way that is easy to understand. This book is a must read for anyone interested in high pressure research and a you'll-be-glad-you-did for anyone interested in science at all.

Science writing at its best.......2000-01-08

This is an absolutly riviting books documenting the science and the people behind the centuries-old pursuit to make the first synthetic diamonds, as well as the new science of ultra-high-pressure that was developoed along the way. You'll leanr how peanut butter can be made into diamonds, how bombs are exploded underground to make ultra-fine diamond crystals, and how the highest pressures ever obtained by science are done with an apparatus that can fit in the palm of your hand. An absolute must for students of science and technology.
