This testimony to working life illuminates the stories, adventures, and wisdom of New York transit workers. More than 100 transit workers were interviewed to discover just what goes on behind the scenes of public transportation. The challenges are legion: the danger of working next to high-voltage power lines in a system that operates 24 hours a day for 7 days a week; workers risking their own lives to save others, an act that often leaves them as witnesses to pain and death. In their testimonies, workers express the importance of bonding with their colleagues for protection as well as companionship.

Then there are the scams that workers cope with daily, such as the "blind" man who puts egg membrane in his eyes to implement his begging routine; "token suckers" who use soda cans to trap fare tokens for resale; holdups and gang activities that make many workers' jobs even more difficult and dangerous. I definently enjoyed reading it...some of the stories are amazing. I want a job in transit, and this book showes what ill face when i get it. Cant wait. This is an unauthorized, but very favorable, biography of Green Day, one of the world's biggest punk music bands.

The trio that became Green Day grew up in small towns near San Francisco. Each coming from difficult family circumstances, they fell in love with punk music (the Dead Kennedys, the Sex Pistols, the Buzzcocks, among many others). They formed a band, and soon became mainstays at a place called 924 Gilman. It was little more than a vacant building, but it quickly became a West Coast punk rock mecca. On any given night, veteran punk bands and bands playing their first gig would share the bill.

In the early days, Green Day was constantly on tour. They played basements, squats, anywhere they could plug in their instruments. Some nights, their audience might reach double digits, and other nights they might actually get paid for their efforts. They were living the punk rock lifestyle, fueled by large amounts of alcohol. They were loose and slacker-like about many things, but they were totally serious about their music.

Slowly but surely, they were building a fan base. Their first two albums, on a small punk label, did really well, eventually selling in the hundreds of thousands. Their first major label release, Dookie, in 1994, was a blockbuster, eventually selling 10 million copies. Marriage, fatherhood and burnout became a part of their lives, so they cut back on the incessant touring. But they were now filling major arenas. While some punk music can be indistinguishable from very loud, random noise, a big influence for Green Day was 1960s British bands, so there was actual music in their songs. In 2004, they released a concept album called American Idiot, another blockbuster and Grammy winner, giving their view of present-day America.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Of course, this book is highly recommended for those who own any of the band's musical output. It is also recommended for anyone, yours truly included, who has seen a video or two of theirs on TV, but who knows little or nothing about punk music in general, or Green Day in particular.

It is one of the best books on latest version of SCJD J2SE5. It gives you insight of project and way to complete your SCJD project with confidence. You should buy if you are preparing for SCJD like me.

Best book for SCJD and standalone.......2006-06-22

Most of the time people who are preparing for SCJD will buy this book but it is good beyond that. Second edition give you practical example on actual project. It is kind of parallel to what you are doing in SCJD. Author is active member on javaranch and gives very useful tips to all post in SCJD forum. I think people who want to improve Java skills on application side should look into this book as well.

I am using it for SCJD exam. Good luck to all.

SCJD Exam with J2SE 5.......2006-06-13

Let's face it. The Sun Certified Java Developers Exam is tough. If you are serious about passing, this is an excellent book for anyone wishing to avoid the common pitfalls associated with many of the projects. The authors reveal various approaches to many of the issues that need to be resolved, discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of each. I found the authors' information on Threading, Building the GUI, logging, configuration, RMI vs. Sockets and "putting it all together" all extremely helpful.

Even though the book has already helped me pass the exam, I will continue to refer to it, because it is filled with great information that applies to development in the real world, as much as it does in the SCJD Exam.

great preparation and guidance for SCJD.......2006-04-24

The SCJD exam is tough and time-consuming. It requires a good deal of effort. So no surprise there are only like two books out that cover this topic. Fortunately, this book does a great job.
I'm an experienced developer, so I was already familar with many of the concepts covered in the book. Where this book was valuable to me was in the guidance it provided through the SCJD process. It helped me complete the assignment faster (I did it in half the time I had originally estimated). And gave me more confidence when it was time to submit my work.

If you havent read the actual state papers it may be confusing. Most of them are extracts or abstracts of the original document, so quite a bit is missing as it is. I havent read this book, but my universities library had the whole collect of Calendars of Letters and state papers, Domestic series which has all of the documents from Henry's reign. If you liked that book, you may try and read those, although I am not sure you will be able to buy them, at least a low cost.

You'll be surprised at what you don't know about The Divorce!.......2005-12-08

These are letters from those years when Henry was breaking with the Catholic Church in order to marry Anne Boleyn (and, not incidentally, eliminate its influence on English matters of state). It is part of the Uncovered Editions series, which publishes historic official papers not previously available in popular form.

I'm a great believer in going to original source material, and this book shows that it's well worth the effort.

The machinations and manuverings are fascinating, as Henry and the Emperor each seeks to engage the Pope in his own interests. When a rumor spreads that the Pope has died, letters are sent calling for threats and bribery to install a Pope favorable to the King's cause. But he's not dead, after all.

The Papacy and the Church are clearly shown as weak and vacillating, ( not to mention corrupt, as the Pope rewards those who contribute to his wars with cardinal's robes). The King doesn't exactly come off well, either, as one has a hard time believing that he really believed the dispensation invalid. His behavior towards Wolsey, whose strenuous efforts in his monarch's behalf were a failure, was, to put it mildly, ungrateful.

Two quibbles (resulting in a "4" rather than a "5"). The title is a tad misleading as it implies that the letters were written by Henry, and although some are, the majority are from other players in the Divorce. Also, the notes could have been more expansive.

Despite that, it's a most interesting collection.

Interesting for Tudor Scholars.......2003-01-25

While I wouldn't recommend this book for the casual reader who wants to know more about King Henry VIII, for scholars, it's wonderful to be able to see the original source documents that are so often briefly quoted in biographies.

This inevitably leads to wrong decisions because the uncertainties of the cost/benefit analyses are often magnitudes higher than that estimated by the economists. Therefore, these analyses should be replaced or supplemented by the concept of sustainability to aid the decision-making process.
