      Book Description

Examining the social and intellectual collision of the American reform tradition with immigrant Marxism during the Reconstruction era, Timothy Messer-Kruse charts the rise and fall of the International Workingman's Association (IWA), the first international socialist organization. He analyzes what attracted American reformers—many of them veterans of antebellum crusades for abolition, women's rights, and other radical causes—to the IWA, how their presence affected the course of the American Left, and why they were ultimately purged from the IWA by their orthodox Marxist comrades.

Messer-Kruse explores the ideology and activities of the Yankee Internationalists, tracing the evolution of antebellum American reformers' thinking on the question of wage labor and illuminating the beginnings of a broad labor reform coalition in the early years of Reconstruction. He shows how American reformers' priority of racial and sexual equality clashed with their Marxist partners' strategy of infiltrating trade unions. Ultimately, he argues, Marxist demands for party discipline and ideological unity proved incompatible with the Yankees' native republicanism. With the expulsion of Yankee reformers from the IWA in 1871, American Marxism was divorced from the American reform tradition.

            Book Description

Decades before Georgia became the cradle of the modern Civil Rights Movement, generations of its African Americans waged a historic struggle to abolish the institution of slavery. Now Michael Thurmond presents this unique, fascinating story of black Georgia from the early eighteenth century until the end of the Civil War.

Thurmond's book argues that Georgia was founded on high moral principle, although all practical arguments for a slave free Georgia, including its role as buffer for Carolina plantations, were used by its founder, Oglethorpe, to "sell" his idea.

Against the assumption that only a slave economy could succeed in the South, Thurmond describes Darien and Ebenezer, successful settlements without slaves. Their residents, unlike those of Savannah (the clamorous malcontents), supported Oglethorpe in his resistance to the change in charter.

"Oglethorpe took particular exception to an assertion by David Hume, the Scottish philosopher, that dark skinned people were genetically inferior to white Europeans and incapable of civilized behavior. `What a historian!' he exclaimed, `He must never have heard of Shishak, the great Sesostris, of Hannibal, or of Tirhaka, king of Ethiopia, whose very name frightened the mighty Assyrian monarch.' "Oglethorpe was certain that if Hume had studied the matter, he would have discovered `that Africa had produced a race of heroes.'", page 41.

Oglethorpe predicted that if slaves were allowed in Georgia, that institution would one day destroy Georgia. He was right, and we've been rebuilding ever since 1865.

"The knowledge of letters even in the lowest degree, is too often supposed to carry with it a sort of qualification for an easy life, and an exemption from a laborious one and the latter being the Negroes lot, they might perhaps bear it with more unwillingness, or seek some desperate means of ridding themselves of it." Henry Melchoir Muhlenger, a Georgia colonist, page 35.

Thurmond goes on to recount the history of education of blacks in Georgia, the statutes on manumission (Slave owners who, in deference to the concept of jubilee in Biblical slavery, or to the fact that often the slaves in question were their own children and the mothers of their children, wished to free their slaves on their death beds were, ultimately, forbidden by state law from doing so, just as slaves were ultimately forbidden to buy their own freedom.), and the history of black soldiers in the Revolution, Spanish Florida, Seminole country, and the Civil War. "If you wish to know hell before your time, go to St. Simons and be hunted ten days by n*****s." A soldier in a Confederate landing party, page 197.

Regarding the question of whether the War Between the States was fought to preserve the union, over states rights, or over slavery, Thurmond quotes a Confederate Colonel "...after slavery was dead, the Confederacy clung to its putrid body and expired with it" Colonel William Oates, page 253. Had white Southerners, in other words, allied with their black brothers, the Confederacy could have been preserved at the expense of slavery; but too many despised negroes more than they loved independence.

Michael Thurmond's Freedom would make an excellent high school and college Georgia history text; there is certainly nothing like it now.

                4 out of 5 stars High-grade, low-math intro to vertex shaders.......2007-09-28

The current generation of GPUs puts a huge amount of rendering power at your fingertips. This book gives a great intro to a range of highly versatile techniques, including bump maps, shadows, complex illumination models, fog, non-realistic rendering, and lots more. You need a little math, but only what's given here. For example, you'll need to know what a dot product is, and the formulas are given. You won't need to know all the extras, like the geometric and trigonometric properties of dot products - those are simply stated where they become useful. Best, the entire discussion is illustrated with simple, legible samples of working code. The cut&paster gets off to a running start. This book really delivers what the title promises: Cg, by means of clear discussion and useful examples.

The book does not deliver what the title does not promise. For example, the authors discuss the effect of finer or coarser tesselation on image quality, but give no idea how to create the geometric models. Because the authors discuss only what goes on inside the GPU, they scarcely mention how to get your shader programs into it, and scarcely mention vertex shaders at all. Those aren't defects in the book, they're choices made by the authors. This book does a lot, but you'll need other references, possibly more than one of them, if you want to build a complete application.

Advanced graphics programmers have probably seen most of this before, and the barest beginners are still struggling with their box's shrink-wrap code samples. If you're ready for the second and third steps of graphics programming, then this could be very helpful. The "gallery" section could be a bit longer and the images a bit bigger, but this is really a how-to book and succeeds nicely in what it set out to do.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to shaders.......2004-06-05

This is a well written book covering the Cg shading language. It contains a lot of useful information about Cg and graphics programming techniques in general. Unfortunately, I felt like it didn't cover as much of Cg as I would have liked, making the book less useful than it could have been.

The book starts with a history of shaders and programmable hardware, an overview of Cg, and a summary of related technologies, such as HLSL and CgFX. It then spends some time covering the syntax and semantics of Cg, and then moves on to the core material of the book, in which the authors explain key graphics pipeline functionality and how it can be implemented using Cg. The book concludes with several appendices covering the Cg runtime, CgFX file format, and Cg standard library, as well as other reference material.

The topics covered include transformations, animation, lighting, environment mapping, bump mapping, fog, shadow mapping, toon shading, and projective texturing. The explanations are all clear and understandable, in particular the chapter on bump mapping, which is one of the easiest introductions to the topic I've encountered. Features of Cg are introduced as needed while explaining these topics, rather than introducing them all at once, which is very conducive to learning. In addition, the authors include warnings and workarounds for techniques which may not be supported on older hardware, as well as advice on attaining optimal performance.

I have two primary complaints about the book. The first is that they never really discuss the application code using the shaders, which made it a bit difficult to understand how they fit in at times. The second is that the book isn't nearly as complete a reference as you might expect. For a great deal of the functions and functionality in Cg, they simply refer you to the Cg reference manual. Although this electronic document is freely available, it's fairly brief at times, so a more detailed explanation in the book would have been appreciated. Similarly, I would have liked to have seen more detailed explanation of CgFX, as well as examples of using it.

Overall, though, this book does a very good job of introducing the reader to Cg and to shaders in general. If you're new to these topics, I'd recommend it. Even if you're a DirectX programmer intending to use HLSL, you'll find this book useful since the languages are identical (though the usage is of course different). If you're already an experienced graphics programmer with some knowledge of shaders, then you'll likely be able to find everything you need in the freely available documentation instead.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Cg.......2003-12-06

My review here is from an experienced OpenGL programmer's perspective.

This is an good introduction to the Cg shading language. It goes well beyond the free introductory PDFs on Cg that you can download from the nVidia site, and will quickly bring you up to speed. If you are unfamiliar with the new generation of graphics cards with programmable GPUs, you will love the introductory chapters. There is also an excellent chapter on bump mapping - the best, practical explanation of the technique I have ever seen. (Other books keep harping about tangent space, without explaining *why* you choose tangent space - never mentioning that it *is* possible to do it in object space.)

                Now, for a few gripes:

                1. There is no clear explanation for how exactly information (say, a calculated light position) should be passed from the vertex program to the fragment program. There are many ways to do this, and there is no suggested way of doing this. (eg: I can use out float3 var: POSITION, NORMAL, COLOR0, TEXCOORD0 - which one should I use and why?)

                2. The vertex and fragment programs are given as such without any calling code. This may be really tough for beginners.

                3. It does not provide a good reference to all the built in Cg functions. In many cases, you have to guess whether a function returns a value or modifes a parameter passed in. For example, there is only 1 line in the book about the faceforward(Ng, I, N) call. What is Ng? Does this function return any value?

                4. The utility value of this book will plummet after you go through it once, since it is only an introduction. So I feel it should be priced accordingly. $45 is too much. I recommend getting it used, like I did, for half the price.

I like the book, but it is definitely not in the calibre of the Red book. (The OpenGL programming guide)

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction, not very thorough........2003-12-03

This book is very good to get yourself started with Cg, but lacks technical details and advanced topics. Once you're on your way coding shaders, you're better off with NVidia's free cg_toolkit.pdf which is included with the Cg SDK.

3 out of 5 stars Promising new technology.......2003-11-29

That's a promising technology for future of game programming. It's for advanced game programers only, no basic stuff here.

I particulary found it hard to follow.
Some things are not in deep explained, and I really don't like to program without classes (Cg uses the C structs way).

Elie Wiesel, the 1986 Nobel Prize Winner, Holocaust survivor, and author of more than 40 books, has something to say about almost everything. Conversations with Elie Wiesel, containing highlights from more than 20 television interviews with journalist Richard D. Heffner, gathers some of Wiesel's best thoughts on subjects such as "The Intellectual in Public Life," "On Being Politically Correct" "Religion, Politics... and Tolerance." The book has a few broad, unifying themes--most notably the dynamics of individual and community responsibility, and the proper role of the state in our lives. But Conversations contains no sustained arguments. It is, instead, the record of a mind in action--the passionate thoughts of a person whose confidence in the significance of his own life is the ground of his generosity towards others:
I have the feeling, honestly, that my life is an offering. I could have died every minute between '44 and '45. So once I have received this gift, I must justify it. And the only way to justify life is by affirming the right to life of anyone who needs such affirmation.
                  --Michael Joseph Gross

                  Book Description

Conversations with Elie Wiesel is a far-ranging dialogue with the Nobel Peace Prize-winner on the major issues of our time and on life’s timeless questions.

In open and lively responses to the probing questions and provocative comments of Richard D. Heffner—American historian, noted public television moderator/producer, and Rutgers University professor—Elie Wiesel covers fascinating and often perilous political and spiritual ground, expounding on issues global and local, individual and universal, often drawing anecdotally on his own life experience.

We hear from Wiesel on subjects that include the moral responsibility of both individuals and governments; the role of the state in our lives; the anatomy of hate; the threat of technology; religion, politics, and tolerance; nationalism; capital punishment, compassion, and mercy; and the essential role of historical memory.

These conversations present a valuable and thought-provoking distillation of the thinking of one of the world’s most important and respected figures—a man who has become a moral beacon for our time.

5 out of 5 stars A moral voice for the Mankind .......2007-02-14

Elie Wiesel here speaks with Richard Heffern on major questions of our moral and ethical life. The fourteen chapters of this work discuss such questions as "Am I My Brother's Keeper" " The Role of the Intellectual In Public Life" " The State: Its Proper Role in Our Life " " On Being Politically Correct" "Nationalism and Upheaval" " The Anatomy of Hate"
"Taking Life Can it be an Act of Compassion?" " Making ourselves over in whose Image?" " The Mystic character of Memory" " Anti-Semitism"
Heffern a veteran broadcaster is an extremely intelligent moderator. Wiesel is as always wise and humane . He for instance in the opening dialogue talks about the problem many of us face, of where to focus our attentions in a world in which there are so many problems, so much suffering, so much need for help. Wiesel the witness of the 'Shoah' whose book 'Night' perhaps more than any other made a wider publc feel the horror of the 'Holocaust' is not simply a spokesman for the Jewish people, but for all of Mankind. He is a person who cares and has done much to help. His description of his first efforts in Biafra shows once again how he extended his caring for all of mankind.
Anyone who wishes to have real insight into the moral and political dilemnas facing Mankind today should read this outstanding book.

How does one review a book by Wiesel? He speaks the truth, is a modern day "righteous Jew", and makes one think of the meanings of life

                  5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking conversations.......2004-11-04

Elie Wiesel is an extraordinary figure in history and literature. As a Jew who survived the Holocaust and horrors of the concentration camps when he was but a child, he has spent his life questioning the very nature of his faith and his fellow human beings. In "Conversations With Elie Wiesel" readers are given the opportunity to hear his viewpoint on a wide range of topics that concern America, and the entire world, today.

These conversations have been honed from numerous interviews with Richard D. Heffner, moderator of the public television show "The Open Mind." Together these two men discuss religion, tolerance, hate, compassion, capital punishment - almost every so-called hot button that exists in the political, social and moral concerns of our world. Elie Wiesel proves himself to be a thoroughly intelligent man, who raises questions even while recognizing that some may never be answered. His distinct experiences and his Jewish faith play a role in all that he says or does.

These conversations are interspersed with interludes that give true Wiesel fans insights into the inner workings of his mind. Wiesel argues for the necessary role of compassion in human interactions. We need to care about our brothers, in spite of our differences, if there is to be any peace and understanding within our world. He holds out hope for the day when everyone could come together and put aside all the differences and squabbles that separate us and tear us apart. This truly is a thought-provoking read for anyone interested in religion, philosophy, and the fate of our world.

Cargas shows great knowledge and understanding of Wiesel's work. The respect he has informs the interview and makes it a dignified and sometimes moving conversation. This is one of the first of the many books of interviews with Wiesel which will appear through the years. And it is a very good one indeed. Anyone who wishes to understand Wiesel's basic point- of- view on many issues would do well to read this work.

                                    Book Description

This book describes various approaches to the Inverse Galois Problem, a classical unsolved problem of mathematics posed by Hilbert at the beginning of the century. It brings together ideas from group theory, algebraic geometry and number theory, topology, and analysis. Assuming only elementary algebra and complex analysis, the author develops the necessary background from topology, Riemann surface theory and number theory. The first part of the book is quite elementary, and leads up to the basic rigidity criteria for the realization of groups as Galois groups. The second part presents more advanced topics, such as braid group action and moduli spaces for covers of the Riemann sphere, GAR- and GAL- realizations, and patching over complete valued fields. Graduate students and mathematicians from other areas (especially group theory) will find this an excellent introduction to a fascinating field.

                                      Book Description

This monograph is a self-contained text book which assumes only that the student has a certain level of mathematical sophistication. The introductory chapter cover such topics as Sylow p -subgroups, solvable groups, and the structures of finite, abelian groups, thus providing the student with a firm foundation for the study of the Galois correspondence.

Appendices covering group actions, the Sylow theorems, generators and relations, Euclidean domains, principal ideal domains, unique factorization domains and linear algebra have been added to provide a more in-depth coverage of abstract algebra.

The Galois correspondence itself is presented with many well-constructed, concrete examples and exercises of varying degrees of difficulty. Some of the diverse applications of the Galois correspondence are presented, including the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, the unsolvability of the general quintic, classical constructibility problems, Wedderburn's theorem on finite division rings, and a special case of Dirichlet's theorem (concerning the existence of infinitely many prime integers of the form nk + 1).

This self-contained text, with its clear exposition and abundance of examples, exercises and applications is an excellent guide for hte student who is seeking an understanding of the power and the elegance of the Galois correspondance in mathematics.

Standard material, and honestly, there are better texts out there, even online. The proofs are clear, but my feeling is that the author could have picked up speed a bit faster without sacrificing neither depth nor clarity. Look somewhere else or check it out in your library before buying.

I have had this book in a course in Galois correspondence. It was ok, but I felt that I should have had more group theory before I started with this book. I also missed solutions to the exercises given in the book. But all in all good book.
