Where It's At.......2001-03-22

This is a bare-bones, fat-free, reference for online jobseekers. If you have a vague sense that a site exists but don't remember its name, you can probably find it here. If you're totally new to the web or online job hunting, this book won't explain it to you. It doesn't evaluate the sites, or even structure the presentation in any meaningful way--the listing is alphabetic. What it lacks in analysis, it makes up in breadth. It's a quick, mostly accurate, overview of 250 job websites.

Some history, lots of nonsense........2000-10-24

If you can handle Marvin Kitman's repeated attempts to knock Washington off his pedestal you'll enjoy this book. I was one of those public grade school kids who labored under his stern contenance. He must have been god. Or at least god's right hand man. We outgrew this. We know he was just a man. A highly flawed man according to Kitman. Flawed, yes, but also good & lucky. George Washington was America first celebrity. We weren't going to be denied. He lost most of the battles but he did win the Revolutionary War. Actually the British tired of it and lost it. This ultimate politician was not political. In essence he was the only game in town. He had Morris & Hamilton as his spin-meisters, shady land deals & girls-friends. (Beginning to sound familiar?) He looked like a hero, acted like a hero, mostly told the truth although he didn't talk much. He was very brave & loyal especially to the electoral college delegates. Kitman asserts that the U.S. Constitution was written especially with Washington in mind. That may be true. They both have survived, no thanks to Kitman

A Musical Dictionary.......2004-01-29

This book is exactly what it says it is-terms and concepts from A to Z. Its a dictionary. It explains general classical music terms and phrases. One great thing about this book is you don't have to read it from beginning to end.
Each entry in the book is well defined (sometimes a few pages long). I read the whole book and thought it was interesting, humorous, and educating.
There are entries explaining many of the instruments in classical music (ones that are still used and some that are not). There are also sections on dynamics and notation with charts and a few helpful pictures. There is also a chart of equivalent notes.
This book is by no means inclusive. It is however, a great starting point.
Some of the terms included in this book are:
absolute pitch, aria, arpeggio, beat, cadence, cantata, fugue, harmony, key, meter, opus number, pitch, rubato, scale, sonata, tempo and rhythm.

an inexpensive introductory reference.......2002-10-04

I am a fan of Miles Hoffmann's engaging and educational "Coming to Terms" segment on NPR's "Performance Today," and this companion-style book provides an excellent source to follow with. It is like a paperback musical glossary that defines the broadest ideas and terms within the classical music world, in language that is easily understood. You will not see as much detail within the entries as you would find, say, in the thrice-as-expensive "Harvard Concise Dictionary of Music and Musicians" (my reference of choice), nor will you find as much enthusiasm for classical music as you would encounter in Karl Haas's "Inside Music," two factors which make the NPR book a bit middle-of-the-road. Nevertheless, given its size, price, and approachable contents, I would recommend this guide as THE reference (glossary/dictionary) to use for anyone new to classical music.

LIstening With Intelligence.......2002-05-01

Now anyone can understand the somewhat dazzyling array of Italian and other "foreign language" musical terms that are bantered about if one listens to classical music.

Here Hoffman provides help in the form of this companion book which includes not only forte-piano to diminuendo, but also provides neat sections on musical instrument families and what I find really helpful, "Character Pieces" such as "Etude" "Scherzo" etc.

Will enhance anyone's ability to understand what we're listening to.

Musical Training Wheels.......2001-07-06

This book is just what the doctor ordered for musical neophytes like myself who are looking for an accessible but authoritative crash course in basic musical terminology. If the difference between pizzicato and pianissimo continues to elude you, then read on. Two aspects of this book are particularly appealing. The first is Libbey's style, which is free-flowing and chatty, conveying often difficult ideas with impressive clarity (the articles on counterpoint and fugue are cases in point). Secondly, I was impressed by his essay-style approach to his various musical subjects; unlike a musical dictionary, which would be content to stop at mere definition, Libbey's book provides background, explanations, examples and opinions that do much to round out the material in the reader's mind. An impressive work indeed!

An excellent reference tool and well written........1999-06-18

Miles Hoffman's book is just as inventive and clever as his section "Coming to Terms" on NPR's Performance Today. His defintions are packed with information and witty commentary, necessitating its use for any classical music lover. For those in the business, or just those wanting to know more, Hoffman's guide is a must have because no other reference tool is as accessible or as clearly written. Suddenly, the lexicon of classical music is no longer out of reach, but instead understandable and affordable in this wonderful guide to terms.

I agree with the complaint about lack of index. Combined with the vague chapter headings, the reader really needs lots of telepathy or maybe just pre-existing knowledge to use this book as a resource. For every 10 times that I had difficulty in administering or using Project Server as a super user and I looked at this book, 9 times I walked away with no solution. I accomplished more by just trying things on my own, and Googling for hints.

This is the first IT related book I have ever bought that doesn't have an index. So I can't find anything without wading through the whole book. Is it just my copy or have the authors been a bit lazy?

I use this book as a basis for teaching others to use Project Server and recommend all clients buy it either as a course book for all admin people or at very least have one or two copies readily available.
The book provides a thorough grounding and understanding of different parts of Project Server.

Marsmanship with Rifles is appropriately subtitled. This slim (65 page) book is an excellent guide for the beginning shooter who wishes to learn more about rifles before making a purchase, or an intermediate rifleman who wants to learn more about the sport. The author has included sections on the different types of rifles, sighting systems, firing postions, and types and caliber of ammunition. His clear, concise explanations are accompanied by a number of black-and-white photographs. Unfortunately, while the photos are very helpful, they have a dark, grainy character that makes them look as though they were printed on a photocopier set to extra dark. Readers may find the two-page glossary helpful, although the four pages of study questions at the end did more to reinforce the feeling of the book as a primer than to reinforce the content. Perhaps the book is intended as material for an NRA class, since the last chapter is about that organization. While the book explains some choices of certain rifles for hunting, I as a nonhunter would have appreciated a discussion of competitions available to riflemen, a topic the author completely neglected.
