Book Description
This book examines the failure of the Socialist government that held tenure in Spain from 1982 until 1996 to combat unemployment. Sebastián Royo builds on interviews with policy-makers, business and union leaders, and scholars to support a new hypothesis: that the institutional dependence of the main labor union (UGT) on the Spanish Socialist Party led the Socialist government to default repeatedly on promises made to the union. This book's main theoretical contribution is to highlight an institutional factor that has not been considered in the examination of the effect of political institutions on economies, namely, the autonomy or lack thereof of labor unions from governing parties.
Book Description
These brief, intriguing case histories drawn from medical journals involve unusual symptoms disguising real problems. For example, a woman who claims to have swallowed a toothbrush while brushing her teeth is exposed as a bulimic who was actually using the brush to induce vomiting. This and other gruesome, surprising, perplexing, and humorous cases are presented as medical riddles for readers to diagnose and solve.
Customer Reviews:
a fun read.......2005-07-11
Aside from the Guiness Book of World records, I found this to be one of the best books for insomnia. The stories, though at times comically badly written as prose, do tend to have their charm. It's almost an affirmation of "if it can happen under the sun it will", but regarding the human body. Not for the light of stomach, not written forensically but in common English, it's an entertaining read.
Odd and scary things........2004-08-28
"Toothbrush" manages to be interesting, funny and scary at the same time. These stories of swallowed items and odd accidents keep physicians wondering about their patients and patients wondering about the medical profession. Who would think that mineral oil or orange juice could be bad for you?
One warning - if you have a weak stomach, you shouldn't read this near meal time. A number of the stories talk about the medical professionals getting sick and if they did, you might.
Humorous and intriguing tales of real medical experiences.......2003-10-08
Rob Myers' Woman Who Swallowed A Toothbrush And Other Bizarre Medical Cases presents over fifty humorous and intriguing tales of real medical experiences. From a life threatening body painting experience to a thyroid problem which causes a literal eye-popping experience in the ER, this is packed with intriguing situations.
Crazy stories.......2003-08-10
This is a strange and funny book. It has dozens of unusual, humorous and macabre stories, which the author claims are true.
Some of them seem too unbelievable to be true, but if Myers says they are true, you kind of have to believe him.
My favorite is "The Runny Nose", which should make everyone very fearful of going to a hospital. I recomend this as easy and light reading.

One of the most influential collections of music ever published, Style and Idea includes Schoenberg's writings about himself and his music as well as studies of many other composers and reflections on art and society.
Customer Reviews:
The Work of a Genius.......2007-03-19
Arnold Schoenberg is one of the most brilliant minds of the twentieth century, not just in the field of music. This is not only an excellent reference of some of his seminal writings, but it's also a great read for anyone who would like a better understanding of the musical landscape of the early 20th century through the eyes of a genius. His scholarship is just as beneficial to us as his compositions.
one-of-a-kind.......2006-01-08
This book is nothing short of an institution in attidude, insight and understanding toward art.
Shoenberg was an amazing teacher, artist and musician. That book is definitely a keeper, and I have bought A LOT of textbooks about harmony, counterpoint, you name it.
But that one is really unique. It's like he's there sitting in front of you and REALLY dwelling into the profoundest thoughts about music, art, life.
His thoughts, ideas, reasonings, are always very, very insightful. Like no-one else.
He is always talking very seriously, but ,like a real master, what he talks about is always full of content and meaning. Always personal yet impersonal, and very ,very intelligent (the word 'very intelligent' hardly does him justice, really .).
At times his focused sarcasm makes me laugh too,I love his clear and truly remarkable reasoning.
For the ones that would not buy this book ONLY because they do not like his music,it is a prejudice that will prevent them to discover the causes of ignorance and will also miss the opportunity to achieve clarity onto subjects that very few,if any, would confront in the way that Arnold Shoenberg does.
Amazing and beautiful.
Book Description
The performances of Luis Valdez's El Teatro Campesino, the farmworkers' theater, and Amiri Baraka's (LeRoi Jones's) Black Revolutionary Theater (BRT) during the 1960s and 1970s, offer preeminent examples of social protest theater during a momentous and tumultuous historical juncture. The performances of these groups linked the political, the cultural, and the spiritual, while agitating against the dominant power structure and for the transformation of social and theatrical practices in the U.S. Founded during the Delano Grape Pickers' Strike and Black Power rebellions of the mid-1960s, both El Teatro and the BRT professed cultural pride and group unity as critical corollaries to self-determination and revolutionary social action.
Taking It to the Streets compares the performance methodologies, theories, and practices of the two groups, highlighting their cross-cultural commonalties, and providing insights into the complex genre of social protest performance and its interchange with its audience. It examines the ways in which ritual can be seen to operate within the productions of El Teatro and the BRT, uniting audience and performers in subversive, celebratory protest by transforming spectators into active participants within the theater walls --and into revolutionary activists outside. During this critical historical period, these performances not only encouraged community empowerment, but they inculcated a spirit of collective faith and revolutionary optimism. Elam's critical reexamination and recontextualization of the ideologies and practices of El Teatro and the BRT aid in our understanding of contemporary manipulations of identity politics, as well as current strategies for racial representation and cultural resistance.
"A major contribution to our understanding of how social protest came to be so strong and how Black and Chicano theatre contributed to the synergy of those times." --Janelle Reinelt, University of California, Davis
Harry J. Elam, Jr., is Associate Professor of Drama and Director of the Committee on Black Performing Arts, Stanford University.

Safety Monitor provides hands-on, step-by-step, practical instruction for parents to protect their children from exploitation, sexual predators, adult-only content, pornography, and other harmful content that comes with computer and Internet access.
Customer Reviews:
I bought this book because...........2003-02-15
of all of the cyber safety books out there, the advice from Safety Monitor comes from a cop that is out there everyday, putting cyber predators behind bars. Who better to give advice to parents like myself.
Sullivan really takes me through the process step by step starting with the profile of an online predator -how to identify one, and finally how to avoid and protect your family. The book ends with a plethora of valuable resources from security software to smart cyber behavior, and finally various national organizations that identify and support this very important issue..
Detective Mike Sullivan patrols the cyber playgrounds and teaches parents how to do the same.
VERY INFORMATIVE.......2003-02-15
I am so very thankful for this book! My kids spend a lot of time online and I just couldn't imagine one of my kids being unfortunate enough to stumble into dangerous territory. I bought this book after seeing Detective Mike Sullivan on The Oprah Winfrey show teaching parents of the dangers that children face online. I purchased this book as a preventative. I really enjoyed thechapter on ways to to talk to your child about the dangers that children face online. How do I bring it up? How do I gain their trust? How to I get them to take me seriously? Another chapter that I found INVALUABLE, was about protection software that I could install in my computer. Sullivan gave me the tools to safe-proof my child's computer.
I recommend this book to all parents!
A Lifesaver!.......2003-01-09
Recently, my child began corresponding with a stranger online. My child started receiving sexually explicit photos from this person. I honestly didn't know what to do. I taught my child not to give out any personal information, but I did not know how to monitor her emails or how to stop her from "accidentally" surfing pornographic websites. I felt helpless. I purchased Safety Monitor and began my online education.
I hate to admit this, but my child can navigate through the internet better than me or my husband! How are we to protect her? Detective Sullivan not only taught me how to take control of my family's online experience, but he did so in a language that I can understand.
I am most grateful for this informative book, and urge all parents of children online to start educating yourselves now.
Not A Very Good Resource..........2002-12-14
I purchased this book as a parent, and find it fails miserably in it's mission. While I give credit to Mr. Sullivan for his intent, this is a poorly written and illustrated book. It lacks depth, has a profound bias, and many other serious shortcomings. For example, the chapter on "Child Protection Software" fails to even mention any of the top software packages available to parents, i.e., Surf Watch, Net Nanny, or Cybersitter among others. It has all the appearance of a serious case of "selling out" to the few software companies mentioned. In addition, the "Further Resources" section at the end of the book is a wasteland. It contains few useful "resources", and many of those it does have are geared toward law enforcement, not parents. This is just not a very good book and I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. If you are still interested, wait for it to come to your local library.
Must Reading for Concerned Parents.......2002-09-18
Safety Monitor is must reading for concerned parents. In the information age parents often become overwhelmed by Internet technology. Coach Mike makes it easy for parents to understand the problem (the safety of their kids), how to interact effectively with their children about the Internet and its use, and what to do if a problem occurs. The parent will know what to do and who to call if help is needed.
This books empowers parents to do what they do best, monitor the behavior of their children. This alone makes Safety Monitor a must read for parents.
Book Description
How does the past matter in the present? How is a feeling of 'ownership' of the past expressed in people's everyday lives? Should continuity with the distant past be seen as simply a nationalist fiction or is it transformed by local historical imagination?
While recent anthropological studies have focused on reconstructing disputed histories, this book examines the multiple ways in which the past is used by people as a critical resource for interpreting the meanings of a changing present. It poses the issue of the felt relevance of the past in constructing present day identities. The Greek island of Kalymnos is a barren and seemingly bucolic setting of tourist imagination. But its history has been one of almost continuous occupation by foreign powers and of often fierce resistance. This has made Kalymnians particularly sensitive to seeing their island in a much wider context and to understanding the 'games played by the powerful'.
In examining changing gender relations, European integration, and local perceptions of the war in the former Yugoslavia, this book brings together local, national and international perspectives in a unified field. Controversial contemporary practices of dynamite throwing and dowry giving serve as tropes through which Kalymnians explore alternative ways of living in a changing world. Further, the author argues persuasively for the crucial importance of situated fieldwork in 'peripheral'places in understanding the issues and conflicts of a transnational world. This book serves as an highly readable case study of the complex connections between local and global discourses and practices, and how they are shaped by their relationship to the past.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but with an academic bent........2007-09-13
For an academic book the author gives us a great tale of the social norms prevalent on the island that the the whole novel revolves around. He describes the islanders and how they interact with their present and past traditions, in a very clear and easily understood manner.
I would recommend this book for people with an academic bent towards the arts, or who are students of the Mediterranean world and its peoples and traditions.
What makes this directly interesting, is that it gives us a view that one rarely sees in the Aegean, that of a matriarchal society (in terms of property inheritance), with a social custom of dynamite throwing. This is a revelation to me, and extremely interesting to me as a person of Greek descent.
For people with an academic bent and who enjoy discovering new people with their infinitely varied traditions/beliefs/customs, I think this book will satisfy your curiosity.
Book Description
This Omnibus edition brings together three classic volumes by the renowned historian, Bernard Cohn, India: A Social Anthropology of a Civilization; An Anthropologist Among the Historians and Other Essays; and Colonialism and its Forms of Knowledge. In the first book, Cohn traced the
development of Indian civilization by combining historical and anthropological approaches to the subject and provided a framework by example for the study of any complex society. The second book has become a legend of sorts, cited extensively in glowing terms by a whole host of scholars, who have
taken the essays in this book to be a starting point for a methodology which combines the historical and anthropological approaches. The third title is a brilliant collection of Cohn's writings from the last fifteen years, discussing areas in which the colonial impact has generally been
overlooked.
Book Description
Nearly every life form found among North American flowering plants is represented in Arizona. This amazing diversity is partly explained by the fact that the altitudinal range extends from a few feet above sea level to approximately 12,000 feet at the summit of the San Francisco Peaks. The life zone range from Arctic-Alpine on these peaks to Lower Sonoran in the southwest and Subtropical in the extreme south.
The main objective of this book is to provide means for identifying the approximately 3438 species of flowering plants, ferns, and fern-allies growing without cultivation in Arizona.
Keys for identification of the families, genera, and species are provided. Under each species the authors give the geographical distribution within and outside Arizona, and usually the altitudinal range and time of flowering. They describe economic uses, toxic or other properties, and ornamental value of many plants, giving particular attention to the utilization of native plants by the large Indian population of the state.
Introductory chapters describe the topography, geology, soils, and climate of Arizona, the several types of vegetation in relation to the physical conditions, and the proportional representation of the larger plant families. There is also a brief account of botanical explorations in Arizona since 1832.
This is the only available work on the flora of Arizona that includes the results of intensive, botanical research in the state during the past twenty years. It is based on an earlier publication, Flowering Plants and Ferns of Arizona, issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1942 and now out of print. For the present revision, a supplementary section of more than fifty pages has been prepared under the direction of John Thomas Howell and Elizabeth McClintock of the California Academy of Sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Dated, but still the best flora key for AZ. Not for amateur.......1998-03-03
This is the classic work on Arizona Flora identification. Revised in 1970, it covers nearly 4000 species of higher plants native to Arizona. This is a highly technical work of based on descriptive taxonomy. I expect that recent advances in genetic typing will soon make works of this sort obsolete, but until such advanced techniques are widely available, this remains an invaluable handbook for the specialist working with Arizona flora. This book is difficult for the amateur to use for two reasons. First, there are essentialy no illustrations, relying instead on subtle distinctions of scientific descriptions. Lacking the necessary technical vocabulary, most amateurs will be quickly frustrated. However, the book does contain an excellent glossary (excepting the lack of illustrations) so with patience, advanced amateurs can make use of the keys. The second problem is less easily solved. Many of the key distinctions are made from plant characteristics observed at widely different times of the plant's life cycle. For example, reference to the petioles or lack thereof of the seedling's cotyledons may be made followed by references to the shape or character of the seeds or seed pods. This limits the usefulness of the key in many cases where the plant is only observed at a single point in time, generally while flowering. As an amateur wildflower observer, I generally use this as a reference to confirm or refine an identification made in the field or from photographs. My initial identification, usually to at least the family and usually the genus, is generally made with the aid of other works, such as the Peterson Field Guides, various other works specializing in desert or Arizona flowers and Ricketts 3 volumes covering the Southwest. But for all that, if you're serious about wildflower identification, then this is a book that must be part of your reference library. The included ranges and flowering times will often be enough to distinguish two similar appearing species.

One Woman's Journey to the Base of the Grand Canyon.......2003-01-05
This is an interesting (true) story of a young woman who heads west to work as a teacher among the the Walapai and Havasupai tribes in Arizona in the early 1900's. Her journey takes her to the tribe settlement at the base of the Grand Canyon, where tribe members existed with little or no contact with the outside world. The story of this tribe, along with their culture and existence in the Grand Canyon is unknown to many. The book is filled with fascinating accounts of the people of the tribe and the struggles they have faced. In addition, through her personal reflections, Flora Gregg Iliff does a good job of giving us a sense of the life and challenges faced by missionaries and teachers who went West at a time when the land was still being settled.
