Book Description
One of the major contested issues in contemporary social policy is that of welfare--how it should be available, to whom, on what terms and by what means. The debate on welfare has taken place across the developed world, and has spread to developing nations: it encompasses a wide range of ideological positions and consumes a large proportion of the resources of states that provide it. This collection reprints the essential scholarship exploring the ramifications of welfare and the state over the course of the twentieth-century, drawing material from a range of disciplines and with a geographical coverage across all major developed countries.

Customer Reviews:
Lowell would laugh at this one..........2006-05-01
I was a friend of Lowell's.
I found this book extremely disappointing. It seems as if the author did some online research and talked to a couple of people that knew the band.
The claim of providing insight into the origination of the songs was almost completely bogus.
Even worse was the lack of factual and personal information about Lowell himself. Shoot, if I described the time we spent together and recalled the stories he told me you would have a much better idea as to who he was.
I agree with the person that wrote that it is better than nothing, but not by much. Lowell deserves a documentary on film and it is my intent to make one, if it's the last thing I do
Lastly, I was with Lowell when he wrote "Kokomo". The song happens to be about me. I never had much of a poker face and Lowell would often laugh at my expressions. He also liked my perfume and knew that I was a friend with many other musicians at the time. Regardless, he knew that he was my best friend and that my loyalty was to him and him alone.
He was the best man I've ever known. He had an incredible sense of humor. He was a man of honor and integrity. The wheels were always turning inside his brilliant mind. He read Scientific American Magazine in his spare time and listened to "World Music" before it was even coined as that.
He had an amazing amount of charisma and it was interesting to watch both men and women compete for his attentions. Most anyone that came in contact with him was drawn to him.
He was that kind of guy. He was generous and kind, talented and humble. Exuding an absolutely magnetic and magical energy to those around him.
It's a real shame that no one realized how sick he was before he went on the road in 1979'. When I saw pictures of him taken a month before he died, I cried. Shaking my head in wonder that those close to him could not see in his face that he was not well. It seemed so obvious, especially when I compared those pictures to ones taken of him 6 months earlier.
But sometimes we don't see that which is right in front of us.
I promise my documentary will provide considerable more insight, into this amazing and talented individual.
I know the band as well and when I contacted them about being involved in his documentary they did not respond. So, sadly they may choose to remain silent. But many of his other friends will be glad to contribute to this project.
There Will Never Be Another.......2006-02-25
I'll keep this simple. Lowell George was one of a kind. If you are a Little Feat fan, this book is essential. Where else can you get an in-depth study of the man and his music? And, Mark Brend has done an excellent job! Stop reading me and buy this book.
Lowell and Little Feat.......2006-01-21
An interesting read...I have liked LF since about 1976 and saw them once in 79...best concert I ever went to...I was shocked to hear that Lowell had died as young as he was and I miss his vocal talent and slide guitar...I read this book a couple years ago not long after it was released , not the best bio but not pretending to be either...it covers a lot of ground but I was hoping for more...I think it is a good read for any Lowell Gearge fan , a nice casual interesting easy to take book...
The only Lowell George biography.......2005-08-13
This book read somewhat like a textbook, however, it is the only biography of Lowell George that I am aware of. Because of that, I think it is worth the purchase. Although not the most exciting book, I wanted to learn more about Lowell George and it helped me do just that. Also, in the back of the book there is a list of all the known collaborations and session work that Lowell George did throughout his career, which is useful in exploring more work by the Doctor.
Hopefully not the last Lowell George Book.......2003-04-22
I love Lowell Georges music. I love the work that Little Feat did with him at the helm of that great band. I bought this book, like others, because it was about Lowell & his music. It is clear that the author wanted a chance to review every song and every little contribution that Lowell made to them. But I'm not sure that he particularly liked many of the songs. There are a lot of quotes from the Lovin Spoonful alums, and very little from Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and other names most Feat fans associate with the original Little Feat, and Lowell George. If you are the type of fan that likes to sing along and tap your feat to the great licks, if you have been listening to Little Feat for as long as you can remember, don't buy this book. You'll probably find you favorite song shredded by this complete review of the music you love, by someone who isn't as interested in the sum as he is in the parts. This isn't a biography, it's more like a revisionist history. Lowell should be listened to not picked apart. Long Live Lowell George!
Book Description
This irresistible read is packed with fun facts and tasty tidbits about Disney, from stories about the entertainment empire’s founding family to the inspiration for many of the popular theme park attractions. Memorable dates include:
• May 11, 1904 — The great surrealist painter Salvador Dali was born in Igueras, Catalonia. His 1946 collaboration with Walt Disney was one of the most unusual partnerships in the entertainment industry.
• December 2, 1929 — The Haunted House, in which Mickey Mouse takes shelter from the storm in what turns out to be a well populated mansion, was released in theaters. This movie was the first time animators created what was to become a popular Disney setting.
• January 9, 1937 — The release of Donald Duck's second film, Don Donald, proved that Donald was capable of carrying a series without any help from Mickey. It also served as the debut vehicle for a ducky girlfriend called Donna, who was later renamed Daisy.
Released to coincide with the company's 18-month-long 50th anniversary celebrations, Today in History: Disney has something for Disney fans of every generation.

For those interested in Disney trivia this is a great book. Each date has a specific Disney fact associated with it relating to the date. This book has obviously been very well researched with a number of tidbits of information that I had not seen elsewhere.
For the Disney fan this book is a great way to get your daily dose.
Disney Fan.......2006-11-12
I am reading the book right now and am enjoying all the little tid bits of information. The book is easy to navigate through with it being set around days of the year. Though, it is easy to forget that the author is talking about a specific day being "opening day" for a movie, someone's "birthday", etc.
Great For Disney Addicts.......2006-07-14
This book is so much fun. I love having something small to read daily. Some of the trivia is even new to me!! A great addition to any Disney collectors library.
An all-inclusive and eclectic guide through Disney history.......2006-07-03
Today In History: Disney by Eve Zibart is an expansive, year-long compendium of informative "infobits" and trivia of the Walt Disney's elaborate and engaging business empire from its beginnings down to the present day -- all laid out in a kind of "fact for the day" format. For example: March 10th (1938) "The Old Mill" not only continued the studios' nearly unbroken streak of Best Animated Short Subject Oscars but also earned Walt Disney his first scientific and technical Oscar for the development of the multiplane camera. A Famously moody and dramatic film almost nine minutes long, "The Old Mill" depicts a Storm as it threatens a farmyard mill and the animals who make their home inside. Eventually, of course, the storm passes, the sun returns, and all is well. -- Name That 'Toon: Which animated film marked the first time mickey was digitally animated, using the technique developed for the Mickey's Philhar Magic attractions? (it gives the answer) and Disney Quiz: What is the former First Lady Nancy Reagan's surprising connection to the Disney movie "Aladdin?" -- the answer is provided). Compiling a wealth of fun knowledge and trivia quizzes on the history of the Disney theme parks, movies, television programs, technical accomplishments, memorable characters, the Mickey Mouse Club, and so much more, Today In History: Disney offers creative calendar of fun facts throughout the yearly on a "one-a-day" setup. The result is an all-inclusive and eclectic guide through Disney history. Today In History: Disney is enthusiastically recommended for all Disney fans.

Goofy shows you the sports of the ancient olympics and now........1998-12-20
This book is the best book in the world, and that's the truth! I read it from my school library a bunch of times. I want it more than anything in the world right now. It's so good!
Book Description
This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love. This unusual school had old railroad cars for classrooms, and it was run by an extraordinary man-its founder and headmaster, Sosaku
Kobayashi-who was a firm believer in freedom of expression and activity.
In real life, the Totto-chan of the book has become one of Japan's most popular television personalities-Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. She attributes her success in life to this wonderful school and its headmaster.
The charm of this account has won the hearts of millions of people of all ages and made this book a runaway bestseller in Japan, with sales hitting the 4.5 million mark in its first year.

Ascending the status of a classic.......2007-06-02
Honestly I read this book over 25 years ago and thought that this book has long been discontinued. I guess this proves what a time-tested treasure it is. The author, a TV celebrity in Japan, recalls her childhood and the unorthodox school she went to. Absolutely adoring in the simple story of how a concerned mother tried to do the best for her daughter and how a simple man did his best to give a bright and meaningful future to the few children who comes into his life.
It is the type of book that makes you wish that there were more teachers like him and that you had a teacher like him.
The little girl who grew up to help so many other little girls &boys........2007-03-14
This is one of my all-time favorite books. First published in Japan in 1981, this beautiful book depicting the true story of innocent little Totto-chan, her family, friends, and above all, the innovating educationer she befriends in the years leading up to, and during the first years of WW2, remains a national best seller in Japan to this day. I don't have any children of my own, but if I did, and if Tomoe-Gakuen (the elementary school Totto-chan attends) existed today, I would immediately enroll my children there. Since there is not, I hope I have the good luck of finding somebody like Sosaku Kobayashi to help make my child the happiest and kindest child in the world.
It was due to this book's beauty that then UNICEF Executive Director, James P. Grant persuaded those working at UNICEF to appoint the author, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi (who is Totto-chan grown up), to UNICEF's International Goodwill Ambassador, enabling her to visit and help children in need all over the world.
For people who have read this book and those who have not, I also recommend "Totto-Chan's Children : A Goodwill Journey to the Children of the World" by the same author. It tells the story of Totto-chan grown up, still big-hearted as ever, striving to help children in need. Check it out!
Gentle Leadership.......2007-01-12
In 1969 I was part of a group of teachers who created a school much like that featured in Toto Chan. We thought we were on the "cutting edge" of educational practices without knowing that a school in Japan had been delivering many of the same holistic, humanistic educational practices over a quarter of a century before. I'm sure many U.S. educators who thought/think they were/are in the vanguard of educational practices would appreciate this beautiful story of a dedicated educator and his students.
Unforgettably good.......2006-08-12
I have not read a better book which has made me laugh, cry, love, and ponder over is such a way! This book is awesome and worth much more than 5 stars.
Amazing! What school should be like..........2006-07-10
I only just started this story last night and I'm already wanting to put everything else off to finish it! As a teacher, frustrated with "the system" of education today, this is a refreshing, exciting look at a unique school of railroad car classrooms, lunches of "something from the sea and something from the mountains," student-centered learning (Wow! what a concept!)from the eyes of little Totto-chan. If the rest of the book proves to be as great as the first part, I will be recommending it to all my teacher friends. It's a quick, fun read for anyone! Two thumbs up!

Thought provoking but repetitive essays, with two standouts.......1999-07-01
Review excerpted from The Journal of Southern History, May 1999, Volume LXV, by Jennifer Delton, Skidmore College.
This collection of essays is organized around a familiar, yet still unsettled question: did Jews in the South resist white supremacy? If so, did they act out of narrow self-interest or a larger humanitarian vision? Was Jewish opposition to white racism the result of a few individuals who happened to be Jews, or a prophetic mission on the part of Jews as a group? These questions provide the departure point for the sixteen essays in the book....Taken together, the essays offer a more specific and grounded understanding of what life was like for southern rabbis caught between the caution and conservatism of their congregations and the moral imperatives of their faith.....The book covers the period from the 1880s to the present. Three essays deal with the understudied 1880-1940 period, the rest focus on the post-WWII civil rights movement. Arranged chronologically, most of the articles detail the life and experiences of an individual rabbi in a wide variety of southern congregations. ...What emerges is a clear picture of the moral quandary in which southern rabbis found themselves, between serving their conservative congregations and speaking out against racial injustices. Southern rabbis nimbly negotiated this predicament by quietly educating their congregations or by joining the larger fight for civil rights.... The essay format lends itself to repetition. Each essay recounts the history and problems of black-Jewish relations in the South, the statistical data, the dilemma faced by southern rabbis, and examples of Jewisn southerners' vulnerability...The same story unfolds in each essay: a beleaguered spiritual leader who wants to do more but is caught between two different imperatives. There are two notable exceptions to this. Hollace Ava Weiner's delightful essay on Rabbi Sidney A. Wolf is seemingly unconcerned with the question of whether or not Rabbi Wolf had "done enough" and conveys what it was like for a midwestern Jew to come to a place like Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1926 and make himself and his ideas about racial and religious tolerancre an integral part of life there. In a different way, Marc Dollinger also moves beyond the question of whether rabbis did enough to analyze the complex relationship between northern and southern Jews during the civil rights movement. Although offering a comprehensive and diverse set of experiences..., the recurrence of the same story means that the questions raised by the essays rarely get explored in any depth....For instance, many of the rabbis entered civil rights work through their work in interfaith organizations. What exactly were the philosophical and organizational connections between interfaith activities and later civil rights activism and might these connections offer some insight into the later limitations of a black-Jewisn coalition? Similarly, what does it mean that Rabbi Charles Mantinband of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, had to sneak off, behind the backs of his temple members, to participate in the civil rights movement? Casually recounted in the Clive Webb essay on Mantinband, that anecdote raises a number of questions about religious leadership and particularly the question at the heart of this book -- can we talk about specifically Jewish mission to fight racism if the rabbi has to disconnect himself from his community to do the right thing? But in the end, this limitation is a mark of the book's strength. There is a wealth of useful and thought-provoking material in these pages that goes far beyond the book's stated intention.

A ground-breaking book which challenges accepted beliefs by proving with scientific precision that consciousness involves more than just your brain and actually depends on the very fabric of the Universe.
Customer Reviews:
Ground-breaking Book.......2006-04-17
Scientists have been reluctant to accept that consciousness involves more than just your brain and actually depends on the fabric of the Universe, notwithstanding that for many years the secret services of America, the United Kingdom and Russia have used allied techniques for spying purposes.
Jeffrey Keen, a successful businessman and a physicist has been researching this phenomena for over 20 years, and has now written a book Consciousness, Intent, and the Structure of the Universe providing the missing link that some scientists have dismissed. He has identified, observed and measured universal energy fields that have not previously been detected either by the usual five senses or by existing scientific instruments. Jeffrey Keen's book, through his pioneering discoveries, unquestionably demonstrates and explains the ancient mystery of dowsing, its connection to the cosmos and its use, and ultimate acceptance, in the world of science.
To mark its 125th anniversary, the prestigious journal Science, (article in The Times 1 July 2005) compiled a list of the major unanswered questions regarding the universe, which man struggles to understand. Pride of place goes to the nature of the universe, closely followed by the subject of consciousness. Keen's book not only addresses both subjects, but it also shows in a convincing way that both of these are linked. It also lays down the foundations for further research, including techniques to adopt, and avenues worth pursuing. Keen's book is packed with the results of carefully executed experiments with meaningful graphs and diagrams. The book is well indexed, the chapters are kept short and there are summaries at the end of every chapter. This is just as well, as this book is not for the faint hearted! A general school level knowledge of science and mathematics is an asset. Some of the concepts are profound and occasionally mind-boggling!
Keen's book does not discuss the esoteric, but is firmly "fixed to the ground". This is serious scientific research, with the presented evidence referring to concepts such as mass, wavelength, field strength, distances, Fibonacchi series, and geometry.
To reflect this unique scientific research, and numerous published papers, Jeffrey Keen has been awarded the prestigious Bell Essay Award by the British Society of Dowsers. The last time this award was made was 7 years' ago.
It is up to the world of science to accept that this research is cutting edge. It is a great step forward in our scientific knowledge, which, once accepted, will benefit so much of the current scientific research being undertaken throughout the world.
Meticulous measurements of dowsable phenomena, limited awareness of healing.......2006-03-27
Jeffrey Keen has an Honors degree in Physics and Mathematics from Imperial College, London University and is Chairman and Managing Director of Swisher Hygiene UK Ltd. Keen's book is written for educated dowsers, researchers in psychic phenomena, and scientists interested to know whether there are any systematic, lawful observations about dowsing. With Keen's book, the answer is a resounding `Yes!' Keen has meticulously studied dowsed impressions of various objects such as crystals and ordinary rocks, plants and humans. He reports fascinating notes on the energy fields around single objects, paired objects, and groups of similar objects. Having explored dowsing for several decades, this reviewer was both delighted and dismayed at some of these notes.
With meticulous detail, Keen catalogues and classifies various dowsable fields and lines around objects, noting how they vary under different circumstances, such as when pairs or circles of objects are present.
Keen acknowledges that people may identify these energies through tactile sensations, as a visual aura, or through kinesiology, but feels that a dowsing pendulum offers the most reliable means for assessing these.
Keen acknowledges that the person is actually the instrument, but writes as though anyone can sense these fields and reproduce his findings. Generally accepted observations of my own and of other dowsers I've spoken with indicate that the instrument is not nearly as important in distinguishing dowsable fields as the sensitivity of the person holding the instrument.
Keen believes that kinesiology only reflects negative energies. This is totally untrue. In fact, kinesiology can be used as another form of dowsing.
Keen's strengths in this book are in his meticulous measurements of dowsable phenomena and his start at categorizing their regular and lawful nature. His weaknesses appear to be in limited awareness of healing and intuitive perceptions outside of dowsing.
Challenge your Beliefs.......2006-03-10
This book has a seriously scary title. Hopefully those who buy it will do a little research first up, so that they realise that the book is about Energy, the sort that moves and regulates the planet rather than the one we pump so wastefully into our cars. I have an interest in dowsing, crop circles and Ley Lines and this book is dovetailing into those interests. It's good to read something that is written using scientific knowledge to suport a thesis that up to now has mostly been in the realm of New Age Hokus Pokus. You never know perhaps some institution will start taking crop circles, auras or Gaia Theory seriously enough to do some valid scientifically based research. God knows the planet would thank them.

Description:
This study examined the behaviour of the microbial population in an anaerobic reactor, in terms of changes in numbers of total bacterial community, autofluorescent methanogens, non-methanogens and morphology of the autofluorescent methanogens, using epifluorescence microscopy and microbiological enumeration techniques. A laboratory-scale, continuous flow-completely mixed anaerobic reactor, coupled with a conventional gravity settling tank and a continuous recycling system, was operated at an HRT range between 24 and 12h, using dairy wastewater as the substrate. The numbers of the total bacterial community and autofluorescent methanogens both decreased during start-up. Also, the proportion of the number of autofluorescent methanogens in the total bacterial community varied from 5% to 16% during operation. In particular, the activity of the methane-forming bacteria decreased significantly at HRTs of 16 and 12h. A membrane module, instead of a conventional settling tank, would obviously have been a more effective method if recycling were required in the anaerobic treatment system.
