Incredible!!.......2005-11-24

This book is beyond belief! Anyone who considers themself an old-school hip-hop head HAS to have this. Just in flipping through the pages I am amazed at the detail of all the information presented. Case in point, I was part of a group that made a record back in 1983. I totally lost track of not only the record, but the rest of the guys in the group( Rickey G & the Everloving 5). I have searched all over the internet, ebay.. everywhere I could think of and I never found any information about this record. Yet here it's not only listed, but the actual Label from the record is shown as well. In addition the comments mention that it was Rahzel's (from the Roots) first record. How could he have known that??? Incredible!

I always knew there were alot of independent hip-hop records in the 80's but when I read this book and saw all the detailed and numerous listings it was like someone had punch me in the face...wow! I never expected it to be this much... Freddy Fresh deserves much respect for preserving this invaluable info and keeping old school hip-hop alive!...

Freddie Fresh's photo appears on the inner sleeve of Boogie Down Productions' first album, so he's no new jack. This latest revision of his invaluable book defies all expectations. The attention to detail and the uncovering of lost classics on impossibly obscure labels, some of which existed to release a single 12", is a labor of love. It is impossible to withold admiration for someone who actually cares profoundly about the *history* of hip-hop. Loving With a Vengeance: Mass-Produced Fantasies for Women.......2000-04-21

This is a great book for anyone interested in contemporary women's studies. Modleski looks at women's entertainment genres (soap operas, romances, gothic novels, and women's film) that have previously been over-looked by critics and theorists alike. Modleski gives a convincing argument for resistence within the orthodox plot that shows how these seemingly simple-minded story lines offer women a chance to escape subjectivity and find a place of power in a patriarchal society. Though Modelski's argument can be a bit hard to wade through, it is worth taking the extra time to understand her point. It will influence the way you look at popular women's entertainment forever.

gives solid grounding.......2005-09-06

With the just released AutoCAD 2006, Shih focuses on teaching the basics of two dimensional drawings. Much simpler than the three dimensional abilities of AutoCAD of course. But some students will need a solid grounding in two dimensions. The book furnishes this at length. Perhaps in some parts the exposition may seem a little slow, if you have had any prior experience, in any layout package, with the material. But keep in mind that Shih is writing for the total novice. Though if you are the latter, you will need some simple maths background [especially in trigonometry].

Needs more synthesizing.......2007-09-25

Accurate, detailed, long, too long. All the information you need and more is here, put in chronological order, from all sides, the planning and the making, the would-be's and the were, the personal interviews and recollections and the reporting. But it reads more as a police report than as an author book.

When it dwells into diplomacy and he-said and the other-said, its interests plummets, it becomes boring and frustrating. It's a huge work of collecting data all right, doing interviews to tens of people, etc, but I think readers would appreciate a more synthesized book than this one. Be specific, get to the point, don't just pour information like from a broken faucet. The author may use this as a lecture tool or as a text book in some college course, but for the general audience it's not fun.

Pick up this book it's just amazing. it gives you details in a very understandable way. it's full of drama and a great page turner.

Slouching Toward the Apocalypse.......2007-07-14

If you only have time for one book about the Six Day War, make it this one. One may choose to quibble with this or that to show off one's discernment, but quibbles quiver before the stern mountain of fact piled up by Mr. Oren. Un-spun facts are the most valuable thing to a history buff. This book has them. Read why the war started. Read how the Superpowers set out their pawns. Learn the real meaning of the "arab street" and why it is important. Watch what happens when national leaders get caught up in their own propaganda. One caution, after reading how the brightest and best, from all of the countries involved, acquitted themselves, you may be tempted to follow the biblical injunction to "put not your faith in princes" with renewed conviction.

This is an excellent book about the six-day war. The author is fair and impartial in his description. I Highly recommend it.

Dense history of the war that still defines the Middle East battle lines.......2006-10-27

I looked at this book on a cross country flight back when it came out in 2003, and all I wanted to learn was the detail that everyone asks about a fight, namely "Who started it?" The 6 day war was sparked when the Egyptians blockaded the Straits of Tiran, thus isolating the Israelis from receiving imports at Eilat. This little detail doesn't go far in helping one grasp the situation. The drama of the war's outbreak is vividly drawn here. Apparently, the stress was so great that Yitzhak Rabin had a nervous breakdown in late May (p91 in the paper version), which was described publicly as "nicotine poisoning". It was in fact so great that he submitted his resignation to Eshkol, who refused it. As is well known, the Israeli air force struck first, knocking out virtually the entire Egyptian air force, and bombing the run ways with cratering missiles that prevented any surviving planes from taking off. Absurdly, the Egyptians publicized that they had won the first day's battle, and went on to claim that the Israelis had been tricked by "balsa wood" versions of airplanes. Today, one wonders if Americans aren't being similarly duped about Iraq's current state of affairs. It's essential to have the paper version alongside the CDs, since the book includes useful maps and photos. The narrator, Robert Whitfield, read this book in British English, which leads to nice turns of pronunciation, such as s-edjule for schedule, etc. It's more comic when MacNamara, the secretary of defense under Johnson, gets a Scottish inflected name.

In this fascinating new account of Old Regime Europe, T. C. W. Blanning explores the cultural revolution which transformed eighteenth-century Europe. During this period the court culture exemplified by Louis XIV's Versailles was pushed from the centre to the margins by the emergence of a new kind of space - the public sphere. The author shows how many of the world's most important cultural institutions developed in this space: the periodical, the newspaper, the novel, the lending library, the coffee house, the voluntary association, the journalist, and the critic. It was here that public opinion staked its claim to be the ultimate arbiter of culture and politics. For the established order this new force was to prove both a challenge and an opportunity and the author's comparative study of power and culture shows how regimes sought to keep their balance as the ground moved beneath their feet. In the process he explains, among other things, why Britain won the 'Second Hundred Years War' against France, how Prussia rose to become the dominant power in German-speaking Europe, and why the French monarchy collapsed.

Very illuminating.......2005-03-12

I am fairly knowledgeable about the 18th century, but this book brought me some brilliant new insights and new viewpoints - especially on 18th century Prussia, on the popularity of George III and (oddly) of Joseph II. Superb illustration through the history of culture of how the 18th century monarchy in France, unlike that of Prussia and England, failed to connect with the "public sphere". I found the omission of the Dutch Republic regrettable and a few passages a little tedious; but for me the book ranks with Orlando Figes' Natasha's Dance (see my review) as one of the few books about periods with which I am pretty familiar that has given me so many new angles to think about.
