Book Description
This book offers a detailed, critical account of the economic transformation of the Czech Republic since 1989. It follows the development and implementation of a reform strategy based on `shock' therapy and rapid privatization, set against the background of turbulent political change and conflict.
The aim of the government in the mid 1990s was the creation of a `Czech' capitalism, with Czech-owned business empires and banks. A detailed analysis of developments in banking and industrial enterprises shows how the chosen strategy led instead to continuing inefficiency, flawed management decisions and uncontrolled profiteering. These combined factors contributed to serious economic difficulties in the latter part of the decade, with success stories largely confined to foreign-owned firms. After 1998, a new government attempted to encourage economic revival based upon a fresh strategy which emphasized the sale of banks and industrial enterprises to foreign owners. Even with this new reform strategy, Myant concludes that the results were, at best, mixed. Throughout the analysis, the author provides in-depth commentary on a variety of topics including the sources of economic growth, the role of the central bank, developments in banking and industrial enterprises and the impact of inward direct investment.
It is rare to find such a comprehensive book which assesses the economic transformations of a single country. The detailed analysis and pertinent conclusions will be welcomed by academics and researchers with an interest in transition economies, European integration, international finance and political science.

Book Description
The Capitol Steps look at the scandals in Washington and the rest of the country, at what people are willing to laugh about in our leaders and ourselves. Gauging what people find funny on the national scene these days, Sixteen Scandals offers a new perspective on such national affairs as Iran-Contra, Desert Storm, Bill Clinton's peccadilloes and how our nation keeps its sense of humor even during turbulent times.
Frolic through the era of "Dutch the Magic Reagan," recall the first George Bush in "A Thousand Pints of Lite," remember Bill Clinton with "The Joy of Sax" and "Libido Loca" and screech right into the present reign of The Big W with "Don't Go Faking You're Smart."
This hilarious book comes with one audio CD with 35 original parody songs and narration from the Capitol Steps, including their ever popular "Lirty Dies" routine. It also contains funny photos of the leaders of sixteen major stages in the life of our country.
The Capitol Steps are former Congressional staffers who started out making up parody songs for Senator Charles Percy's office Christmas party. (They were going to put on a nativity play, but in all of Congress, they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin.) Twenty years later, they have performed live for four presidents and have recorded 20 CDs of their songs.
Customer Reviews:
CD doesn't have complete songs.......2004-04-07
I bought this mainly for the CD, and I'm disappointed. While the 52 tracks are fun to listen to, most or all of them are just excerpts from the full songs. And the 74 minutes includes a narrated introduction to each excerpt, which adds to the educational value of the CD but makes it feel more like a history lesson than musical humor.
The Capitol Steps are great, but this book is dull.......2003-02-05
I have been a fan of the Capitol Steps for several years now. Their performances are extremely hilarious as they keep the audience laughing by wearing silly costumes, immitating politicians, and singing songs. This book tells the story of how the Capitol Steps came to be, which is somewhat interesting. It also has portions of the lyrics to their songs, but somehow they just aren't all that funny on the printed page. The book includes numerous photographs, but strangely, not one of them actually shows the Capitol Steps!
The CD that comes with it contains some of the Capitol Steps' all time classics tunes. If you don't already own the albums, this can be funny to listen to. The title is a bit misleading, though. The CD is titled "Sixteen Scandals", but it is NOT the same as the CD that the Capitol Steps released in 1997 under the same name.
Outlandishly Hilarious.......2002-10-18
This was a rather frightening, yet hysterical, trip down memory lane. So much has happened in American politics over the past 20 years. What a blessing it is to have the Capitol Steps around as the bards recording the inane antics of our elected representatives. To prove how great this book is, I've bought three copies of it - one for me and two for other friends. They are phenomenal. Here's to 20 more years of political satire!
HILARIOUS!.......2002-09-26
I've been a fan of the Capitol Steps for years, having listened to them on NPR. This book takes you through their humble beginnings when they were mere Congressional Staffers worried about being fired for making fun of their bosses and through their successes of making fun of 4 Presidents. The accompanying CD is a stitch too, and well worth the money! I recommend it!
Hilarious!.......2002-09-26
I've been so angry at Washington, DC that I forgot how funny it was! The book details the Capitol Steps origins and how they've made a living making fun of the very same politicians who first employed them in the first place. The accompanying CD was well worth the listen as well and will bide me over to their next radio show.

This Is Why There Is A Bridge and Tunnel.......2006-04-22
I had been reading and loving Mr. Kogan's analysis of the music of our lives for many years. I had a collection of clippings of his work, but like most of what I had, I lost it in Katrina. While my city is hardly recovering, when I found this collection of Kogan's writings, it was like I had recovered some of the most important memories of my youth. Much of the music I write has been informed by Kogan's insights, and I can't recommend this book more highly for anyone who listens to music with more than their ears.
THE Most Interesting and Intelligent Writing About Music.......2006-03-14
I have been reading and enjoying Frank Kogan's work in the Village Voice for years. It is a distinct pleasure to read such thoughtful and thought-provoking articles. For example, Frank's observation about country & western as "split emotionally between a desire for home and family on the one hand and the urge to range wild and free on the other" was, for me, a sort of "aha" insight: as soon as I had read it, I recognized the truth of it, but I'd never quite thought of it that way before. Whether or not I enjoy the music he writes about, I always find his comments worth reading.

Red, Bill, and Harold, flushed out their international success on the small screen, are proud to bring the Possum?s-eye-view of the world to Canadian Literature.
And the U.S. of A.
It?s all here — the wit and wisdom from the men of Possum Lodge — including:
• The Possum Lodge Charter and Pledge
• Camping tips (A tree is just a campfire waiting to happen.)
• Ice fishing hints (Do not fight the boredom. It is an intrinsic component of the sport.)
• Red Talks to Teens (Let?s make this clear — plaid shirts and baggy pants aren?t grunge wear, they?re Lodge wear.)
• Harold Speaks (Okay. The Future of the World. Or specifically, how I hurt myself shaving.)
• Handyman Corner (The one and only Dumpster Cottage)
• Classifieds (For sale, a big large brown and blue thing. I?m not sure what it is but it looks real important and valuable.)
• And more songs and poems than you?ll know what to do with.
And if you buy this book, you?ll have a handy little gadget that works even if the dog has hidden the remote.
Customer Reviews:
I'm a man, but I can change, I guess........2002-09-09
Some women might want to call "The Red Green Show" chauvinist because there's nothng but men on it. Have you ever noticed that? Actually, I can remember one episode that had a beautiful model pretending to be Bernice, Red's never-seen wife. But that was the one and only woman I have ever seen on the show. I said women COULD call it chauvinist, but if they watched it, they SHOULDN'T. It's a show that does nothing but make fun of men. And it is funny.
This book takes some of the best material from the show and kind of throws it together. You'll meet pretty much all of the Possum Lodge members; a wierd collection of some of the goofiest regular guys you'll ever meet. I'm a particular fan of Buzz Sherwood who alledgedly can fly his airplane around Possum Lake, but when you're that stoned all the time, how do you do it? You might be glad to learn O.L.D.M.A.N. Sedgwick's full name.
If you're a regular viewer of the TV show, then you don't need me to tell you to buy this book. If you haven't seen the show, find it somewhere on you local PBS station, or gripe to the station for not carrying it and get one of the videos. Then, maybe you'll appreciate this book and maybe you'll buy it, or something.
Well, Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati. (you'll need to read the book or watch the show carefully to figure that out.)
A must-have.......2001-07-10
This book is all of the hilariousness of The Red Green Show laid out in book format. There's Red giving advice to middle age guys, Harold's advice to teens, Red's songs, Harold's for-sale and other announcements, and so forth. I recognized some of these from the show, but by no means all. (Then again, I have not been lucky enough to see every episode.) Then, there's piles of information on Possum Lodge: the pledge, the charter, the rules (yes, they have some), Lodge merit badges, a history of Possum Lake, the transcript of a Lodge meeting (complete with Old Man Sedgwick, Stinky Peterson, Moose Thompson, et al.), a Meet Your Member bio of many member, [pant, pant, pant] and so much more!
This book is great. As soon as I got it I immediately started reading it out loud to my wife (her gardening book couldn't possibly have been as good as this one!). Don't be fooled, the jokes start right at the beginning of the book (if you can find it). This is a great book, a must-have for all Red Green Fans. Hurry up and buy it!
hilariously funny.......2000-01-13
I bought this book for my husband, because he loves the show. He has had to fight me to get hold of it to read. It is a must buy!
For a 100 great chuckles - get this book!.......1999-06-10
Nobody should be without this book! It is a real piece of humour in writing!!! Great as a gift idea for anyone!!!
Great show...great book!!.......1999-02-04
If you love the show you'll love this book!

Customer Reviews:
Lightwave 8 in depth information.......2006-11-20
If you need a good tutorial on Lightwave 8, this is a good starter book. Suitable for introductory information on the capabilities of LW8.
Doesn't really reveal the power of Lightwave.......2006-11-01
The book is probably good for someone, who wish to do very simple things with Lightwave. I don't think this book is a good for people who are serious about 3D. Going through all the menus may be good, but it is not necessary in 3D. The book explained all menu items but failed to focus on the principles of Modelling techniques. Little was also mentioned about Animation. It is simply written, but did not help me much. Lightwave online tutorials are actually alot more helpful.
A little vague...even for a beginner........2006-04-03
Nothing goes in-depth at all. I know it is intended for beginners but it's still pretty weak in my opinion. I understand the intention is to show you the path and leave the rest to you, but it barely even lets you know there is a path.
I would personally recommend one of Timothy Albee's books for learning lightwave tools from the beginning, as I have read his books as well. As a complete reference as well as slightly more in-depth training, go with Dan Ablan's Inside Lightwave series books.
I honestly feel I have wasted my money in buying this book.
For Beginners Only.......2006-03-26
I had no idea this book was really intended for Beginners to Lightwave - and I mean Absolute Beginners. The writer even admits that they have only been using Lightwave for a few months before writing this book, so anything more advanced than telling you what some of the buttons and options available refer to is beyond the scope of the book.
And it's quite misleading - for example, the amazing image of the building that is throughout the book on each chapter heading page would be impossible to create using the information this book provides - you'd need several years more experience and learning before getting to be good enough for that.
A disappointing purchase.
Revealed Series "ROCKS".......2006-02-22
If your interested in 3D Animation for Games or Movies this series of books from Thompson Learning is the way to go. Obviously Newtek will be releasing Lightwave v. 9 soon and I'm sure Amazon will be able to provide the copy of that book also. These books are perfect for the beginning 3D artist because they explain and visualize what you need to do in all of the tutorials, as opposed to books written for veterans which assume the reader knows where everything is located.

Book Description
Now published for the first time in one beautifully bound volume, these 27 lectures, delivered in 1998, present a new perspective on the early days of one of America's most influential "small towns," and its impact on New York State and the nation. In 1998, the Town of East Hampton commemorated its 350th anniversary with a year-long celebration, the centerpiece of which was a lecture series presented by noted national scholars and historians, all experts on various aspects of the area. The series covered East Hampton's history from colonial 17th century to the present day, and included lectures by:
* Richard S. Dunn, Ph.D., on "John Winthrop, Jr., of Connecticut-The First Governor of the East End"
* T.H. Breen, Ph.D., on "Trade and Community: East Hampton's Curious Commercial Origins"
* Dr. Robert C. Ritchie on "East Hampton versus New York"
* Dr. Langdon G. Wright on "The Origin of Government in East Hampton"
* Christopher M. Collier, Ph.D., on "East Hampton: A Strategic Outpost of Connecticut in the 1660s"
* John M. Murrin, Ph.D., on "East Hampton in the Seventeenth Century"
* Paul Goldberger on "East Hampton Architecture: Plain and Fancy"
Located on the East End of Long Island, New York, East Hampton is one of the most famous "small towns" in America, and home to some of the country's most artistic and influential people.

Customer Reviews:
Wilderness of Warped Mirrors.......2007-08-16
Reading "The Intelligence Game" is like becoming trapped in a fascinating looking-glass time warp. The teams are MI5/SIS, CIA, and KGB; their captains are Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan (replaced late in the game by George The First Bush--actually George II, if one counts Washington), and Mikhail Gorbichev. The constantly changing rules of the game seem to have been written by Lewis Carroll for one of his Alice books, and, if one of the minor players cries "foul"--or in the words of Alice, "You're nothing but a pack of cards!"--governmental referees rush out onto the playing field waving rule books of "official secrets." As the recalcitrant player is promptly escorted to the penalty box, a frantic, but usually unsuccessful, attempt is made to bind, gag, and keep him there until the game finishes. What the spectators in the stands do not know, however, is that the game will never finish.
Like Phillip Knightley in his 1986 book, "The Second Oldest Profession," Mr. Rusbridger, writing in 1998-99, argues that the intelligence community (on all sides) is an expensive, often-delusional, not to say corrupt, self-perpetuating oligarchy, whose survival depends both on the cloak of governmental secrecy and on the conjuring up of new enemies, both real and imaginary, to be forever feared. Food for thought in the post-KGB twenty-first century, as the game goes on.
And on . . .

Book Description
The authors in this book argue that our dedication to maintaining beautiful lawns is contributing to the serious environmental problems facing the planet, and they offer strategies for creating and caring for aesthetically pleasing and ecologically sound lawns. This new edition updates the original text and adds a chapter and illustrations showing what progress has been made in the ecological management of landscapes over the past decade.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, an easy & fascinating read.......2003-04-08
This book's forté is 2 things: Its' explanation of the negative impact of millions of monoculture, traditional lawns - not on just the environment, but on the lifestyles and wallets of those who tend them. And then it offers sound advice (which does -NOT- start with "get rid of your existing grass") which can be easily followed by the average homeowner. The solutions proposed in this book are not radical, unattractive schemes, and most of the suggestions offered will result in a BETTER LOOKING YARD and savings of time and money. I read it from cover to cover twice. I hope to soon have my yard working for me, instead of me working for my yard.
I found a good compliment to this book in "The Lawn, A History of an American Obsession," by Virginia Scott Jenkins. If you're interested in more of the history and background of the entire lawn concept, (and some neat old pictures of advertising,) you'll love this book. It explains how agriculture, chemical companies, the garden industry, golfing, housing developments, world wars, etc... and the advent of new inventions have come together to result in an entire lifestyle revolving around 'the lawn.' The complete answer to the question, "Why do we have lawns, and what did people used to have around their property?" Read this, then read "Redesigning" to see what having all these lawns does to the world and the people in them, (and, of course, suggestions for improving things in your own little slice of the world.)
Inspirational and informative!.......2002-02-22
This is a wonderful resource about a very important environmental problem - the American lawn. The diagrams are especially clear and complete. It provides the history of the lawn, scientific background about the problems associated with the lawn, and also gives very practical advice about how to create a Freedom Lawn. I initially got this book (first edition) from the library, but decided this was one I wanted to have for my personal reference - especially since the second edition includes updated information.
scholarly - good for critical discussions.......2001-10-26
Most Americans do not realize how much their tastes in gardening have been affected by marketing on the part of lawn care companies. Nor do they seem to realize what environmental havoc they wreak through the lawn care practices preached on TV, and promulgated every time they watch the Masters Golf tournament on TV and think they should try to emulate those greens and fairways at home. They have been seduced into an unrealistic world that wastes their time (why mow?), money (why put fertilizer down 4 times a year?) and the environment (Do they really even have the weeds or bugs in their lawn that the 'weed and feed', and 'grub killers' are prescribed for? If not, why are they paying extra for the privilege of putting down toxins they don't even need?)
This book is a scholarly approach to reviewing the problem - highly recommended if you tend to ask "WHY?" before "How much?"
It changed my habits.......2000-03-28
This book was truely a revalation for me. I consider my self to fairly conservation minded, yet I had know idea how much more I could do. This book taught me, more than anything else, that it truely is the little things that count. I liked it so much I gave copies to my family of christmass.
