Book Description

Individuals with autism are seven times more likely than other people to come into contact with police and their responses to encounters with authority may not always be appropriate. Private investigator and autism advocate Dennis Debbaudt explains how typical manifestations of autism spectrum disorders, such as running away, unsteadiness, impulsive behavior or failure to respond, may be misunderstood by law enforcement professionals, with serious consequences. For parents or carers of those with autism, he offers advice on how to deal with problems arising from their encounters with professionals in positions of authority. Aimed at raising awareness and improving communication, this is a much-needed book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read........2003-07-23

This is a must read for all law enforcement personnel, fire departments, emergency medical technicians and especially parents of children with autism. It is so important that communities use this resource to recognize the characteristics of persons with autism and strategies to help should they encounter a person with this neurological disorder. As a parent, this was a real eye- opener and made me realize how much work and education needs to take place in my own community. Thank you Mr. Debbaudt for this book!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, Practical, and Very Important.......2002-08-06

Debbaudt does an excellent job on two fronts" First, explaining to law enforcment professionals how to identify and deal with autistic people, but also encouraging parents and caretakers to take responsibility for educating their loved ones on how to deal with the police in order to avoid tragedies. People with developmental disabilities are seven times more likely to interact with the police than people without disabilities. This is an important issue, and this book is an important contribution towards helping ameliorate a significant problem.

5 out of 5 stars Law enforcement ignorance of autism endangers communitites.......2002-04-29

As a mother of a four year old autistic child, I'm plagued with the worries of "what will happen to my child when I'm gone." As such, we have set up our wills and our estates to take care of him. However, there are even more practical issues to worry about that Dennis Debbaudt brings to light in his book. People with develeopmental disorders are seven times more likely to come into contact with law enforcement than regular citizens. Our autistic children are socially impared, and the ignorance of this disorder is rampant among police ranks and other "first responders" to an emergency situation. Often "autistic traits" can be mistenterpreted as drug abuse, hositlity and beliegerence, dementia, or suspicious behavior that can appear as criminal intent. People with autism have been accidentally killed in crime situations, or have given false confessions to crimes they didn't commit largely due to police ignorance of this disorder.

This is a good primer for police and other first responders. It gives a good overview of why certain investigation techiques are not effecitve in dealing with autism. The second half of the book is directed at parents and caregivers - with good tips about informing local police of your child's condition, keeping your child safe at home, in school, and while traveling. There are also tips on spreading autism awareness to police and other first responders on a grassroots basis.

      Book Description

This work searches for the existence and timing of turning points in real wage and productivity growth in Britain and the United States during the late 19th-century, a time of technological advancement and stagnant real wage growth. A Bayesian econometric model identifies shifts in the economic conditions of both countries that contributed to the growth of organized labor and widespread labor unrest. This model directly estimates a break's location and significance-a far more rigorous approach than is usually taken, and one which eliminates the subjective visual identification of the break.

There is a long-running debate over the existence of a downturn in British economic performance, and recent research focuses on the relationship between real wages and productivity. This study locates a decline in British real wage growth in the early 1890s, originating with a concurrent cost of living increase. The location of Britain's productivity decline coincides with that of the U.S. Yet American real wages stagnated a decade earlier than did British, due to the U.S. immigration wave of the 1880s. A combination of higher prices (experienced by both countries in the early 1890s), and the immigration surge after 1900, further suppressed U.S. real wage growth.

Satirist Paul Krassner has collected a number of his outrageous pieces in this exuberantly in- your-face collection. The longtime editor of The Realist, Krassner may be a self-proclaimed "psychedelic relic," but Kurt Vonnegut Jr., in the introduction to this collection, asserts that Krassner's writings are "emphatically not nostalgic, but raffishly responsive to the here and now." Puncturing pomposity wherever he finds it, Krassner joyously skewers those on the left as well as those on the right, and while his prose is often indelicate, it's also often hilarious. As Vonnegut notes, Krassner can make very serious matters seem ridiculous, and then his readers can decide for themselves what is serious and what isn't.

4 out of 5 stars Name Drops Rippling in the Acid Rain Puddles.......2006-10-31

I like Krassner, I've long had an interest in the '68 riots and the Chicago 8 trial, and the bigger picture of this unique point in time, when streams of cultural changes, political chaos, and advances in street psycopharm all pooled together, each synergistically amplifying the brew. This book, with forward from Vonnegut, is billed as the collected satirical writings of Krassner. They are presented in reverse chronological order, starting with his eulogy to yippie turned yuppie Jerry Rubin. It's all very interesting bits and pieces, but it strains to rise above that level. There is no shortage of names being dropped, Patty Hearst, Phil Ochs, Timothy Leary, Norman Mailer, Terrence McKenna, Allen Ginsberg.

Well, that's okay. There's a time for linearity. Then there's a time for humorous blathering; irreverent jags just on the periphery of being smart observations on the absurdity and hypocrisy of the human condition. Krassner is no Lenny Bruce, no Hunter Thompson, no Groucho Marx, and he seems to get that. But he's hung with those guys. That's cool. So he can talk about that in an interesting, disorganized way.. He's like an entertaining, old and semi-manic guy you meet at a bar or a show who goes on and on. And it's super-entertaining for awhile. Then it wears a little thin and you make some excuse to get out of there. And that's something at least.

There's a scattered feel to all his essays, like listening to an audiobook on your iPod without realizing it's still set on shuffle. Speaking of which, I am sad to say I wrote a great review, a positive and informative review, of the 30 G iPod and it keeps getting rejected. They say it is too much personal information and not enough about the product. I've edited and edited, I've gotten it down to less than 100 words of personal stuff, related to the product, in a single paragraph, in the middle of close to 400 words of accurate and glowing information about the iPod. But they won't take it. I think because I go into detail about the Shiva playlist I've found myself making, the morbid exercise of picking songs to be played at a memorial service for me if I die unexpectedly. The kind of party where people are really sad, the hurt is fresh (I write "I've just been harvested and cremated. No, wait- make that plastinated. No, no- make that fossilized," it was funny). Music plays, people drink and mingle, and several people independently comment to each other that "you know, Marc would have really loved this, it's too bad he can't be here to see it." That was it, enough personal information to kill my review of the iPod. Just heartbreaking.

Anyway, Krassner's a cool dude, I recommend his writings. I'd give it 3.819 stars if not constrained to integers. Worth a read, though I don't recommend sitting and reading cover to cover. A little dose here and there does the trick. Speaking of which, you've really got to love a guy with the ambition and audacity to get Groucho Marx to take LSD.

4 out of 5 stars Adventures in the Counter-Culture.......2005-09-20

Radical in the Sixties, radical since, radical today. Krassner is one of those rare specimens - a Sixties radical who survived with his sense of humour intact. It's easy to see why. He doesn't take himself seriously, he realises the essentially futile (but essential) nature of trying to change society, and he is instinctively anti-authority.

This book consists of a collection of short stories from various points in Krassner's life - from the nineties to the fifties and all points in between. It's irreverent, sometimes infuriating (sometimes you just want him to talk straight and seperate facts from hyperbole), and thoroughly entertaining and informative.

Krassner hung out with all the cool cats, and he's probably the only one still around to tell the tale. He'd be the first to accuse himself of escaping the wrath on account of his role as a CIA deep cover agent.

Highly recommended for people interested in 'what happened in the Sixties', mind-expanding drugs or radical American politics.

As good as a book you will read on the history of television in this country. The author does a great job in tracing where television started and where it is today. For anyone who is interested in reading about the decline in the way we get our news I highly recommend this book.

                    Book Description

In 1943, J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant, charismatic head of the Manhattan Project, recruited scientists to live as virtual prisoners of the U.S. government at Los Alamos, a barren mesa thirty-five miles outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Thousands of men, women, and children spent the war years sequestered in this top-secret military facility. They lied to friends and family about where they were going and what they were doing, and then disappeared into the desert. Through the eyes of a young Santa Fe widow who was one of Oppenheimer's first recruits, we see how, for all his flaws, he developed into an inspiring leader and motivated all those involved in the Los Alamos project to make a supreme effort and achieve the unthinkable.

                    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-08-23

I was a pre-teen during WWII living on a farm and was negatively impacted by all of the bad news coming out of the war. Not until the last year of the war, did the US seem to be winning. The scenario was not terribly different than we are hearing today.

Against this background, I am always interested to read details of what was actually happening in various elements of the war effort. 109 East Palace is one of those marvelous reads of men and women accomplishing wonders that helped to bring the war to an end. This is better than science fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Fills in the human side of Los Alamos.......2007-03-04

I've always been fascinated by the wartime development of the atomic bomb, and I've read a number of mostly technical works such as "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes. Many of the scientists and engineers who were at Los Alamos have written stories and memoirs of the events at Los Alamos, but "109 East Palace" does a great job of filling in the human details of the people who worked and lived at Los Alamos from 1943-1945.

The story is told from the viewpoint of Dorothy McKibbin, a young widow and mother who Robert Oppenheimer hired to run the office (109 East Palace Street) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, through which people and supplies funneled into Los Alamos. Through her eyes, the chaos and horrific conditions of crowding thousands of people into a site intended for only a few hundred gave me a much greater appreciation for what was accomplished in such a short time.

The book follows the timeline of events at Los Alamos, with many anecdotes and characterizations of the key people there. It's a fascinating story of a disparate group of scientists and engineers from different backgrounds working together for one purpose and succeeding. The atomic bomb was developed, of course, and two bombs forced the Japanese to surrender, ending World War II. The author follows up on postwar events, especially the life of Robert Oppenheimer up until his death in 1967.

Some excellent photographs really bring the places and people in the story to life.

Highly recommended if you're interested in the development of the first nuclear weapons.

5 out of 5 stars Dad loved it.......2006-11-06

I got this for my dad, who lived in Mountainair as a child, somewhat fascinated by the news that drifted over from the Los Alamos facility. I always struggle to think of gifts for him, and I feel I've succeeded when I find a book that qualifies as a page-turner in his hands. This one definitely did, and from the little I read of it I can see why.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of History.......2006-11-05

This is an easy to understand, informative book about Los Alamos and the making of the atomic bomb. It would have been better if the book covered more of the aftermaths of the dropping of the bomb. After reading the book, one is inclined to want to learn more about the bomb, and the Cold War.

5 out of 5 stars Lifting the Veils of Secrecy Surrounding the Manhatten Project.......2006-08-22

This book should be read in conjunction with: A Wall Street Tycoon and the Secret Palace of Science That Changed the Course of World War II.
Both are by the same author and she covers the who, what, when, where, why of the major advances in physics and the theorectical and the technological races to win the Second World War. .
By thoroughly researching the viewpoints of many observers and participants in the Manhattan Project and the development of radar , she mined the facts and melds them and presents the reader more insights into the personalities and politics as well as the sciences than most (if not all) of the participants could themselves.
For those of us who experienced the depression and WWII but who never learned how the Atom Bomb and Radar came to be and how the Allies won the war technologically, these books are priceless.
The virtual battalions of unsung heroes are presented in context.
These two books also show how history should be researched and presented in order to be understood and factual too.
If you have children or grandchildren, buy copies for them to keep and read many times to grasp the evolution of the bomb and radar and to begin to understand how wars are really won or lost years before they start.

In this acclaimed historical study, Alexander Saxton establishes the centrality of white racism to American politics and culture. Examining images of race at a popular level—from blackface minstrelsy to the construction of the Western hero, from grassroots political culture to dime novels—as well as the philosophical constructions of the political elite, it is a powerful and comprehensive account of the ideological forces at work in the formation of modern America.
