If you're looking for a quick way to pass the ExCET, this isn't the book for you. If you're willing to put in some time and really read, analyze, and discuss the passages in this book, then you may be on the right track. "Becoming a Teaching in Texas" isn't going to pass the ExCET for you, but it will give you an excellent structure in which to think about the way you've handled classroom situations in the past and the way you will teach in the future. I received this book as part of the $3000+ Project PACE program in Region One. This book was worth more than all of the workshops and Blackboard courses combined.

I bought this book for myself because it's so funny, and my then-girlfriend took it and read it, and sure enough, we never got married! It has hilarious tips for staying single including: "get along GREAT with his mother." Another good one is "have an image problem" which includes this sample dialogue:
Her: Do you think my thighs are fat?
Him: No, I think your thighs are beautiful.
Her: Then you think fat is beautiful.
Him: Well, if you don't like your body, why don't you start working out?
Her: So you do think my thighs are fat!
Him: No, I think your thighs are beautiful.
Keep repeating this conversation until your relationship is over. (It won't take long.)

A Mixture of Real Advice Disguised in Female Humor!.......2001-12-07

Amongst men, they will say, "Chicks aren't funny." Well, here's a book that a lot of women will buy for the humor, but a good portion of the advice could be very helpful. This is one of the books that I used as a resource for my book. I believe that the biggest problem that most women have in dating is "spooking" men away early. And here's a book that tells women in a woman's voice what might trigger this. I particularly find things like #19 "Use baby talk in bed, #41 "Have a prejudice, #55 Talk about therapy, #69 "Overdress", and #89 "Don't laugh at his jokes," to be very good examples of "spooking." I think it's a fun read that would make for a good woman-to-woman joke, but there's real good relationship advice in here, but not properly contextualized. Bottom line: men get spooked easily....you only get a few chances at the big one.

Useful, but insensitive........1999-03-31

While this book does have a good amount of useful advice, the author can sometimes be a little insensitive. For example, in the part about attending singles' events, she writes that the only men you'll find there are "over-the-hill prowlers and socially maladjusted geeks." Well, I'm a male, I attend lots of singles' dances, and yes, I guess my social skills are a little weak. Gee, thanks for your kind words of compassion. Perhaps a woman who refuses to consider someone without the deliverance of Robert Redford deserves to be single forever. She might meet someone with all the "geekiness" of Bill Gates.

Oh, and by the way, over a year ago I met a nice woman at one of these events, and we've had a great relationship ever since. I'm sure glad she didn't read the book.

Accurate keyboard reductions.......2005-05-23

Like most of Schwartz's published music, the selections included in this collection are scored well for voice and keyboard alone. The vocal line in never interpolated into the accompaniment figure, allowing the pianist to have much more fun than is often the case with coma-inducing boom-chick reductions. Because of this, the aspiring pianist may have a more difficult time reading the music than his/her trained counterpart, but none of the music should prove overly demanding for anyone who has seriously studied the instrument. The music feels great under the fingers, and-as is the case with most of Schwartz's scores-proves to be a good study in rock/pop pianism.

The ever-popular "Lost in the Wilderness" is scored a whole step lower than the original show key (here it is in G Major). The vocal ornamentation at the end of the "Lost" bridge isn't written out and there are several places in "Stranger to the Rain" where the music director of the cast album allowed vocal liberties that are not represented in the printed music (whether or not you like them we can assume that they weren't Mr. Schwartz's ideas). All in all a good a good source of material.

FANTASTIC!.......2002-11-18

Im actually in a production of this play right now, and theres only one thing better than listening to the cd, and its seeing it! I highly recommend this and my other favorite Schwartz show Godspell. My favorite song is "The Wasteland" not because thats my solo, but because its a brilliantly written piece of music.

Children of Eden.......2000-04-08

I saw the actual play 2 times and loved it both times granted i saw it at my high school with our own cast performing it. But the songs were still awesome and that intern inspired me to purchase the CD, Some of my favorite songs are :"In Pursuit of Excellence", "The Wasteland", "Spark of Creation", "The Naming", "Generations", "Ain't it good", "The Perfect Day", "Piece of Eight" well lets just say that i loved them all. Stephen Schwartz is an absolute GENIOUS! TINA GONZALES,JEFF GWALTNEY,CHRIS CAUSEY,COLT CLARK,CHELSEY STONE,BRICK STONE, KRISTEN NASH and ESPECIALLY ERIN SMOOT ARE AWESOME! NOT TO MENTION MRS. The Children of Eden vocal selections are wonderful. If you haven't heard the music, make sure you do - it's some of the greatest ever. My only complaint is that the selections left out some of the best songs, namely "Generations."

Definitely an easy read.......2006-09-29

Like so many others, I grew up watching "Three's Company", so I couldn't wait to dive into this book. Considering we're talking about a sitcom here, this is a light and fun read geared towards the super-fans. The behind the scenes stories are alternately funny and enlightening, and the author clearly went to great lengths to present all sides of the story. This is especially important, since opinions on the Suzanne Somers situation vary widely. One thing I do wonder about: considering she travelled the world studying philosophy and religion, why does Joyce DeWitt still talk about the salary dispute scandal as if it happened the other day? IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO!!!! Having said that, I highly recommend this book.

A MUST FOR FANS OF THIS HILARIOUS THREESOME.......2006-01-31

This is a super book.Filled with everything you want to know about Three's Company.Included are complete episode guides of not just Three's Company itself,but it's two spinoffs,The Ropers and Three's A Crowd,as well.This show really knew how to make you laugh.I really learned a lot from reading this book too.Like why Chrissy disappaered the way she did,and had to be replaced.Another book that I highly recommed.

This is one hell of a good book.One you can realy get glued to.
Very informative i just love it.Im a big fan of this show and every thing you would want to know about it is here.
Im buying all the DVDs as they come out of Threes company and this is like a bible to it.
Its sad to see the cast getting involved in off screen arguements.But it is realy good reading.The part where Chrissy left is in my opinion the best part,you can read that over again.Dont get me wrong i like everyone who appeared on the show, but i like gossop.And i liked Terry also.She brought a different sense of humor into the show.
The show lasted a long time but when it gets to the end and talks about how the show ended,you cant help but wish it lasted some more sesaons.I actualy thought Threes A Crowd was a bit boring.But i only saw some episoded 20 years ago.
Its interesting to think that Joyce would have liked to continued making the series, without John Ritter when he decided to leave.That would have been interesting to see how that would have gone.But thats just one of the many things you will find out in this great book.

Come and Knock on Our Door.......2004-11-01

We get it. Three's Company isn't an intellectual masterpiece. Just as the show doesn't require an "I.Q. over 56", which is precisely one of the reasons to enjoy it, the book didn't set out to rank among the historical or philosophical tours de' force in literature. Give us a break, man. Yeah, when someone says they "stumbled upon something by accident" rather than intentionally sought it out, they probably mean the latter. You don't fool me, bud!

What is presented here is not a "guidebook" on Three's Company, because again, you're right, the show isn't brain surgery. What "Come and Knock on Our Door" is, is almost more of a piece of memorabilia than anything else. I happen to think the episode guide is great. The book was a precursor the TV movie and "E True Hollywood Story" and all the other "Three's Company" expose's that followed, and is just a well-written look into the show behind and in front of the camera. Waiting for a John Ritter biography that will hopefully be written, hopefully by Chris Mann.

Three's Company forever.......2004-09-27

Wow! This book is wonderful. It is an absolute must read for any Three's Company fan. I am a huge fan of the show and consider it the funniest show of all time. This book takes you behind the scenes and covers just about everything there is to know about Three's Company. Just about everyone involved with the show is interviewed and gives their take on all the going-on. There is a great description of how Three's Company finally got on the air, the tensions and problems that developed between its stars, the decision to cancel the show, and everything in between. Suzanne Sommers comes off like a selfish, self-centered bitch, who cared about no one but herself. Joyce comes off like a bitch, too as she just bad-mouths everyone from Suzanne to John Ritter to the producers. I just don't see how she can act like she's on this high moral perch when she did a show that was very immoral (that's what we loved about it!) She came off the same way in the movie and in the E! True Hollywood story piece. John Ritter must have had a lot of patience to deal with these two. John Ritter comes off well in this book. He is a man who loves to make people laugh and that is what he's all about. He was the best physical comic I've ever seen and regardless of what Suzanne thinks, HE was the STAR of Three's Company. God Bless John Ritter and may he rest in peace. He was great on 8 Simple Rules and he was taken from us much too soon.

Very Dry and a difficult read.......2005-12-02

to be honest - this book was impossible to read. director is an exciting program and this book was impossible to read, i felt like i was trying to make it through mobey dick, and everyone knows, its hard to learn when you aren't engaged. I bought this from borders, and im planning on bringing it back there. I bought director MX 2004 Bible instead, and within reading 2 pages i bought it knowing i'd love it. This is a manual, a very dry manual.

This is a truly awesome book. Except for the scattered typos, the book really teaches a lot. You actually work through entire visually appealing real world type projects. The author takes you through step by step with plenty of screenshots to keep you on the right track.

Ambitious and mean... but not lean.......2005-08-02

A useful and more advanced alternative in relation to the Demystified series and the like. I don't know if this is really "advanced", but it's coverage of themes like creating and managing a SQL database, building a shooting spaceships 2D game, a 3D memory game, and others, was what I considered advanced for years. It was delightful finding myself making this exercises with relative ease. Not for absolute beginners, it requires some 50 hours to devote to this material. Intermediate-advanced.

Save your time and money!!!.......2005-03-06

I bought this book thinking it would teach me a great deal about Director. I had previous experience, but I wanted to further my learning. Training From the Source has always came out with great books and I thought that this would be great for learning Director more in depth. This is also the required text book for a class I am taking. And everyone is having a frustrating time with it, even the instructor.

The chapter on the 3-D game is ok, but it's the database lesson that has proved to be a major frustration. It says at the beginning of the lesson that it takes two hours to complete. It took me more like twelve. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. After double checking the code, I knew I didn't make any mistakes. So I checked the lesson file that came on the disk. It turned out that some of the sprites on the stage on the score were placed on the wrong channels. Fortunately, I had previous experience with Lingo, and was able to fix the problem. This book is not ideal for people new to Director. The graphing lesson and movie in a window lesson has proved to be equally frustrating.

In conclusion, if you are new to Director and want to build a basis for learning it, or even a novice who wants to build on their skills, then don't buy this book. Like the previous reviewer said, It is a waste of time and money.

A complete waste of time and money........2005-01-15

I bought this book for a college course thinking it would help introduce me to Director MX 2004. While it does serve some purpose, you would be better off spending your hard-earned money on any of the other ones out there. I am only two chapters into it and already I have encountered six errors, three debilitating ones that have caused a week's loss in productivity among the entire class, until our next class meeting when our professor could explain what the hell went wrong.

Castoriadis was born in 1922 in cosmopolitan Constantinople (now Istanbul)from Greek parents. He grew up in Athens in a cultivated and fertile social environment. Castoriadis belongs to the generation of Greek thinkers that left Greece (in 1945 because of the Greek civil war)and matured in Europe (Axelos, Kranaki, Papaioannou etc.). The imaginary istitution of society is his landmark work. In this work he covers several subjects (marxism, revolutionary theory, social imaginary and the individual..). A few words from this work will show the depth and clarity of his thought: "Is my desire infantile? But it is the situation we live in infantile. That the life is given to us, the law is given to us. In an infantile situation life is given for nothing;and the law is given without anything (sans rien), without a possible discussion. But what I want is the opposite: I want to live my life and if possible to give life .....The person who is in an infantile level is the person who is apolitical and conformist...the person who replaces the private father with the social anonymous father... "

Very challenging and inspiring.......2004-11-29

This book zeroes in on possibly the core issue of progress as we know it. In maximizing certain kinds of production, we are systematically "weeding out" other kinds of life. Shiva conducts a whirlwind tour of what this means for agriculture, biodiversity, the economy, politics, and human values. What do we have when only certain types of plants and people are valued? I found this a very challenging and inspiring piece of work.

Change the mono-minds.......2001-02-10

Vandana Shiva's books are essential reading for anybody who wants to explore seriously the impact of biotechnology on the so-called "third world"; on their food production, their environment, and the disappearing biodiversity of their traditional food crops. It is easy to find books that claim biotechnology is the answer to the developing world's woes. It's much more difficult to find considered and well researched investigations from southern experts and scientists on the challenges the "benefits" of biotechnology are bringing to their cultures.

MONOCULTURES OF THE MIND is a collection of essays representing such a "southern" scientist's vital perspective. Shiva makes provocative contributions in the ever expanding debate around what (and who) will feed future generations of humans in the developing world. She argues that a mono-agriculture society - where trees are seen as nothing more than timber and crop yield is the only measure for economic value of cereals - reflects a mental and political system that will lack in vision and complexity in general. However, diverse knowledge systems are necessary to address the challenges ahead of us. For example, in traditional societies, trees have multiple purposes, from food, water reservoir and shelter to nutrients of the soil around them. Timber value is only one (small) part of the whole. Traditional knowledge systems contribute in major ways to the understanding of biodiversity, ecological sustainability and cultural, including agri-cultural, diversity.

Vandana Shiva is a geneticist as well as an environmentalist and her expertise comes to the fore in her analysis of threats to biodiversity and the dramatic loss of species and varieties in modern times. She also reviews various negative impacts posed by biotechnology on fragile southern ecosystems and the dangers to southern economies.

You don't have to agree with all of Vandana Shiva's views, BUT, you should read some of her books for what she has to say and what she represents. MONOCULTURES is a good starting point.
