The Red Violin Caprices: for Solo Violin
Manufacturer: G. Schirmer, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0634001841 |
Book Description
The Red Violin Caprices (duration: ca. 10 min.) are derived from John Corigliano's music for The Red Violin, which received the 1999 Academy Award for Best Original Score. The Caprices were composed especially for Joshua Bell. "These Caprices, composed in conjunction with the score for Francois Girard's film The Red Violin, take a spacious, troubadour-inspired theme and vary it both linearly and stylistically. These variations intentionally evoke Baroque, Gypsy, and arch-Romantic idioms as they examine the same materials (a dark, seven-chord chaconne as well as that principal theme) from differing aural viewpoints. The Caprices were created and ordered to reflect the structure of the film, in which Bussotti, a fictional 18th-century violin maker, crafts his greatest violin for his soon-to-be-born son. When tragedy claims wife and child, the grief-stricken Bussotti, in a gesture both ardent and macabre, infuses the blood of his beloved into the varnish of the instrument. Their fates thus joined, the violin travels across three centuries through Vienna, London, Shanghai and Montreal, passing through the hands of a doomed child prodigy, a flamboyant virtuoso, a haunted Maoist commissar, and at last a willful Canadian expert, whose own plans for the violin finally complete the circle of parent and child united in art." - John Corigliano

The Sport Star: Modern Sport and the Cultural Economy of Sporting Celebrity (Published in association with Theory, Culture & Society)
Barry Smart Manufacturer: Sage Publications Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 076194351X |
Book Description
Why are sport stars central to celebrity culture? What are the implications of their fame?Proceeding from a broadly based discussion of heroism, fame and celebrity, Smart addresses a number of prominent modern sports and sport stars, including Michael Jordan (basketball), David Beckham (football), Tiger Woods (golf), Anna Kournikova and the Williams sisters (tennis).
He analyses the development of modern sport in the UK and USA, demonstrating the key economic and cultural factors that have contributed to the popularity of sport stars, while examining issues such as race and gender, the impact of professionalization, growing media coverage, the role of agents and the increasing presence of commercial corporations providing sponsorship and endorsement contracts.
This book situates the sport star as the embodiment of the various tensions of age, class, race, gender and culture. It argues that sporting figures possess an increasingly rare quality of authenticity that gives them the capacity to lift and inspire people. The book is a major contribution to the sociology and culture of sport and celebrity.

As Seen on TV: The Visual Culture of Everyday Life in the 1950s

Opening with a photograph of a 1950s Disneyland home designed in the shape of a TV (by those fun-loving futurists at MIT), this book's text and photos consistently maintain a balance between insightful social commentary and critique and sensitive recapturing of the essence of visual broadcast's dawn.Book Description
America in the 1950s: the world was not so much a stage as a setpiece for TV, the new national phenomenon. It was a time when how things looked--and how we looked--mattered, a decade of design that comes to vibrant life in As Seen on TV. From the painting-by-numbers fad to the public fascination with the First Lady's apparel to the television sensation of Elvis Presley to the sculptural refinement of the automobile, Marling explores what Americans saw and what they looked for with a gaze newly trained by TV. A study in style, in material culture, in art history at eye level, this book shows us as never before those artful everyday objects that stood for American life in the 1950s, as seen on TV.
Customer Reviews:
"Life In The Age Of Television Was A Feast For The Eye...".......2000-09-06
Marling merges era icons, fads, and seminal events more seamlessly into social statement than Halberstam did or Kammen attempted. Her understanding of cars evolving into social statements segues best into the image of Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock and Roll" for whom the "gorp"-covered Cadillac was chariot of choice. (she also credits Martin and Lewis with exposing the entertainment's dual sensibilities during early TV).
Marling also writes of home convenience from new appliances and quick dinners colliding with the rustic, more honorable life many felt had been replaced. This clash inspired and popularized Grandma Moses' idealized portraits of American country life, Walt Disney's scale model re-creation of small-town America at Disneyland (and on the accompanying TV program), and Betty Crocker's shorthand version of motherly mentoring through General Mills' best-selling cookbook. Marling's chapter on Walt Disney's inspirations for creating the park is among the book's most fascinating. But a chapter on "American Bandstand," should Marling have chosen to include it, may have tied even more loose ends together.
The book may also have done with some re-arrangement; the closing chapter accurately and humorously chronicles the 1959 Richard Nixon-Nikita Krushchev "kitchen debate." But its tale of form of function, argued by its most important leaders at the peak of Cold War hysteria, may have been more effective introducing Marling's tale. The book may then have received more social context by stating sooner Nixon's belief, according to Marling, in "style as a manifestation or a symbol of difference and, in difference, multiplicity - the possibility of choice - as...connecting idle consumer fetishism to ideology." This would also have more closely tied the 1950s' garish color imagery with its parallel, grainier black-and-white images (Nixon, the Cold War, and Joe McCarthy, a standout 50s figure seen on TV but not in this book.) Nonetheless, "As Seen On TV" is a fun, informative read for those wishing to understand the reasoning behind an era's unforgettable images.
Very interesting book with wonderful photographs.......1999-05-26

An enchanting read.......2004-02-20
This is a book full of detailed descriptions of the lifestyle of the Russian aristocracy prior to the revolution. I found this very helpful in setting the scene for what was to come.
Much new material was found and researched. Thirteen boxes of archive material were found in the Hoover Institution, among them Xenia's diaries covering the Rasputin affair and the Tsar's abdication. As a point of interest, the late Queen Mother provided some insights into Xenia's life in Britain in what proved to be her last ever interview.
The authors take us from the opulence and magnificence of her childhood in Russian palaces through to her death in exile in England at the age of eighty five.
Xenia was no stranger to personal heart ache, and the book deals with the Rasputin saga and the downfall of the Romanovs. Her son in law was involved with Rasputin's murder which caused her some angst. She was increasingly exasperated by her sister in law the Empress Alexandra, who seemed to her, to be bringing disaster on them all. For months Xenia did not know what had happened to her brother the Tsar, and eventually rumours of execution began to circulate. One can barely imagine what she must have felt when the appalling truth came to light.
This wonderful book covers in lavish detail the life of the Russian Imperial family immediately before and after the revolution,it is also an excellent insight to the problems faced by the Romanovs in exile.
There are 75 plates, many of which have not been seen previously, the quality and quantity of the research was self evident. The text brought the family to life and I was especially struck by the quiet dignity of Xenia.
The book is beautifully laid out and has detailed family trees at the beginning of the book, which are very interesting. Unlike some historical biographies this book is not at all heavy going. I could barely put it down.
I cannot recommend this book enough. If you already have an interest in the Russian Revolution you will be captivated, as I was. If not, I can think of no better place to start.
The authors should be very proud of themselves- my best read of the year so far.

Brain Dessert.......2003-04-02
The appeal to Dwedney and his book stems from the fact that everything he writes is game-like or puzzle-oriented; while reading him one gets the feeling that an enlightened child is guiding the learned to a new level of thinking. Dewdney takes Computer Science on an enjoyable walk through a park where he ends up teaching the discipline to rethink shortest paths and non-intersecting traversals. What's more amazing about this book is that it is perfectly suited for a coffee table where the uninitiated could accidentally pick it up and join the conversation. That is, a degree in computer science is not a prerequisite to this fascinating read. It is brain dessert.

The Politics of Improving Urban Air Quality (Elgar Monographs)
Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1858986966 |
Book Description
Improving urban air quality has become a policy priority for the European Union, national governments and city authorities as more evidence comes to light of the harmful health effects of road traffic pollution. This book clearly illustrates how to work towards effective policies for improved urban air quality. The authors argue that designing and implementing successful policies is not just a matter of deciding on the most appropriate technological solutions. A process of institution building has to take place which works towards consensus among a variety of potentially divergent interests, from the police and highway authorities to business interests and citizens. Making use of policy network theory, this volume presents studies of attempts to build such coalitions, and the factors that have often frustrated them, in countries such as Canada, France, Italy and Switzerland. This book provides a major contribution to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the policies needed to combat road traffic pollution. The Politics of Improving Urban Air Quality will prove invaluable to scholars and environmental policy makers.Books:
