Book Description
Understanding United States Government Growth develops and tests alternative explanations of government growth since World War II. It opens with an analysis of debate about the causes and consequences of government growth, including the excessive government view that the public sector has grown beyond the scope demanded by citizens due to its own structural defects, and the responsive interpretation that government has gown because it has reacted appropriately to external public demands. The authors review the major political and economic explanations for government growth and criticize earlier empirical attempts to test these explanations. In the second half of the book, they distinguish four components of government growth: growth in the cost of government and growth in the scope of government activities in three domains--transfer payments, domestic purchases, and defense purchases. Both responsive and excessive explanations of each of these components of growth are developed and tested to allow an evaluation of the validity of the two contrasting views about "big government".

Book Description
1001 Blues Licks presents 1001 riffs in a variety of blues styles to be played within the standard 12-bar format. This is the ideal book for beginners seeking a well-organized, easy-to-follow encyclopedia of blues licks, as well as consummate professionals who want to take their knowledge of the blues to new heights.
Customer Reviews:
Great Value.......2007-07-16
This 1000 blues lick book and the 1000 jazz lick book are some of the best values on this site for practising musicians. The blues book is broken up into styles and the jazz book is broken into progressions. Licks are the next step after scales. They are real life applications of scales. The blues licks are visceral and require vibrato. The jazz licks are longer and require dexterity and accuracy. There's no tab but you can do that for yourself as a memory aid. I'm not a great music reader but these are single lines and thus not difficult to read. Once you learn how to play the lick in one position you should learn most of these licks in at least two other positions which makes them easier to translate to other keys. You can also reverse and invert them for additional color. If you love lines and phrases as much as I do I'd recommend buying both books !

Book Description
The Expediency of Culture is a pioneering theorization of the changing role of culture in an increasingly globalized world. George Yúdice explores critically how groups ranging from indigenous activists to nation-states to nongovernmental organizations have all come to see culture as a valuable resource to be invested in, contested, and used for varied sociopolitical and economic ends. Through a dazzling series of illustrative studies, Yúdice challenges the Gramscian notion of cultural struggle for hegemony and instead develops an understanding of culture where cultural agency at every level is negotiated within globalized contexts dominated by the active management and administration of culture. He describes a world where âhighâ culture (such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain) is a mode of urban development, rituals and everyday aesthetic practices are mobilized to promote tourism and the heritage industries, and mass culture industries comprise significant portions of a number of countries’ gross national products.
Yúdice contends that a new international division of cultural labor has emerged, combining local difference with transnational administration and investment. This does not mean that today’s increasingly transnational cultureâexemplified by the entertainment industries and the so-called global civil society of nongovernmental organizationsâis necessarily homogenized. He demonstrates that national and regional differences are still functional, shaping the meaning of phenomena from pop songs to antiracist activism. Yúdice considers a range of sites where identity politics and cultural agency are negotiated in the face of powerful transnational forces. He analyzes appropriations of American funk music as well as a citizen action initiative in Rio de Janeiro to show how global notions such as cultural difference are deployed within specific social fields. He provides a political and cultural economy of a vast and increasingly influential art eventâ insite a triennial festival extending from San Diego to Tijuana. He also reflects on the city of Miami as one of a number of transnational âcultural corridorsâ and on the uses of culture in an unstable world where censorship and terrorist acts interrupt the usual channels of capitalist and artistic flows.

Customer Reviews:
Billie Rae Bates has written an excellent book.......2006-04-09
From one Dynasty author about another, I think Billie Rae Bates has done an excellent job in presenting Dynasty's facts. I have the e-book version and found it to be sleek, put together quite nicely and a wonderful reference guide for the series. She is to be commended for putting together not only this but her other books and a website to be proud of. I wish her nothing but success in all of her endeavors.
Judith A. Moose
Different kind of book.......2006-04-01
I bought this book and enjoyed it. It's not supposed to be a big behind the scenes tellall. The author is upfront about that. It's portrayed as a refernce guide, not a history. The author avoids gossip and sticks to the facts about the show (cast guide, characters and so on), and I liike that. I don't particularly care to read speculations or rumors that may or may not be true. I bought the e-book or one of the author's other guides and enjoyed that, as well. So don't think of this book as one that's competing with other books out there that tell the story behind the scenes. the goal of this one is different. And the author is a very good writer (much better than me!!!) with a great command of the English language. I enjoyed it. "Dynasty" is a great show that I used to watch as a kid, and I love to read aobut it. (Favorite character: Adam!!!!)
Not much bang for the buck.......2006-03-28
I bought this book to see if it has anything not covered in the book by Judith Moose and Paul Keylock. I was disappointed when it came because there's really nothing to it. Nothing really about the history of the show and where are the pictures? The author says she's a journalist so how hard would it have been to get photos of stuff other than books opened to Dynasty or The Colbys. Even the cover (salt and pepper shakers and a plate) lacks the style that Dynasty was known for. This reader's suggestion is to save your money.
Very disappointing book.......2005-10-24
This is a very poor book, I was very disappointed in receiving it. It's useful only for cast list, but also if it's not expensive, I really do not recommend it. Avoy it...
Clever.......2005-03-15
Positive take on the show (not like the lame TV movie that was on recently). The Catfight Count (as this author call it) is pretty funny, and the writing elsewhere in the book is snappy and fresh. THe write-up on every episode (no episodes are missing) is long enough without being drawn out or boring. I enjoyed it. It's good to have while you're watching the episodes, especially if you missed a day. The show has been showing in my country for a while, and I think it's still on SoapNet in the U.S.

Customer Reviews:
Could be worse.......2003-09-23
This book is far from ideal. My background is computers, and I'm used to documentation being written to tell me what I need to know, quickly. This book is a set of tutorials--it is NOT a reference. When I need to know something specific this book is nearly useless. If you don't really know what you want to learn and want to be led through a series of exercises this book may be useful. However, if you're starting from zero, I recommend "AutoCAD 2002: No Experience Required" by David Frey, which is written much more clearly and will more quickly give you a taste of all (or most) elements of AutoCAD. Omura's book required spending too much time on things I didn't need to know to get to what I did want to know.
Another major complaint is that this book is loaded with typos and errors. Clearly it was not proofread. Numbers in examples don't add up (example: last paragraph on p. 221: two times twelve is NOT forty-eight), assumptions are made about all settings being in their default positions (not safe if you're using someone else's computer) and commands that have not yet been covered are referred to. In the chapter on AutoLISP both the first and the second example programs have typos in them and if you don't have a programming background you could tear your hair out trying to figure out what you're doing wrong. I started to keep a list of all the errors I found, but it seems there's one every couple of pages. (Incidentally, I didn't find a single typo in David Frey's book, and I went through the entire thing.)
Finally I should mention the CD-ROM. The first thing this CD-ROM did was crash the computer I was using. After rebooting--twice--it still crashed when trying to run the installation program. This was running a recent installation of Windows ME with over 500MB of RAM. I was able to copy the example files off the disc manually, but this whole package clearly meets a very low standard of quality assurance.
Fortunately I'm about at the point where I'm able to find what I need in the online documentation, and this book was not completely useless in teaching me enough to reach that point. However, I find it hard to imagine there isn't something far superior out there that I could have used instead. This book could be worse, but it's far from ideal.

Book Description
War-from 25,000 feet up.
During the Vietnam War, Ed Cobleigh served two tours of duty, logging 375 combat sorties and over 1,000 hours of combat time in the F-4D Phantom II fighter/bomber. Unlike so many others, he made it back in one piece. And he returned with an experience-and a perspective-that those of us on the ground could not begin to understand.
In War for the Hell of It, Cobleigh shares that perspective in an intimate account of his life in a war filled with moral ambiguity and military contradictions. This is an unprecedented look into the state of mind of a pilot as he experiences everything from the carnage of a crash to the joy of flying through a star-studded night sky, from illogical political agendas to his own dangerous addiction to risk.
With the aviation thrills of Flight of the Intruder and the military pathos of M*A*S*H, Cobleigh gives a stirring and emotional description of one man's journey into airborne hell and back.
Customer Reviews:
Great 'no BS' account of the air war in vietnam.......2007-09-24
Sarcastic and honest. Really funny (and sad) view of a fighter pilot it RVN.
His discussion about naval aviators cracked me up, "I kept asking them about their flights and all they wanted talk about was their damn landings..."
Really good read
It was like my own diary.......2007-08-04
I was at Ubon after this was written but kept finding myself saying, "yeah"! It could have been my own diary. Little comments like the smell of Thailand, eating beef salad, zotting (original laser bombing designation). This book what everything I remember about my tour and have highly recommended it to family, friends and those were there as well.
Red Badge of Courage redux..........2007-07-11
Lt. Col Cobleigh has created a literary masterpiece that is a must read for anyone interested in all aspects of being a fighter pilot.
Welcome home, Sir.
I concur.......2006-08-27
I served at the same time, in South Vietnam flying F-100s. Fast Eddie nailed it. I guess our time and job made us share more than exactly where we flew. I wish I could write and recollect as well as Cobleigh, but I sure enjoyed looking back.
I kind of lost it at his ending thoughts. Tears were shed for many things, lost comrades, frustration and anger. But, most of all, for the realization that the most intense, and maybe best times of one's life was concluding.
I am ordering more copies for family and friends to help them understand.
A bonus - superior writing and narrative. I hope he writes more. Retiring as an Lt. Col. says he stayed flying. I would like to learn of his decade following, as it changed USAF forever, and I missed it serving my family as a civilian.
What the Captain means is..........2006-08-26
Combat memoirs get written years after the events. During that time the bad gets erased in memory and the glory gets accentuated. It's way too easy to forget the puking at the back of the revetment and remember the John Wayne swagger that you never really had at the time. Heroism comes so easy in retrospect and from the safety of a position in front of a word processor screen that it is rare to really read honest admissions of the things that went bump and bang in those deadly nights. Ed Cobleigh (another Fast Eddie)tells about the war as it was in an assault on all of the senses. Sights, sounds, smells and feels come at you from all of the unusual places of a combat environment with a skill that few aviation writers have brought to the table before.
I've been disappointed in way too many fighter pilot memoirs that turned out to be self-aggrandizment coated in public relations hogwash. This book is different. It's real. It's visceral. It's the way it was and the way I remember it as well.
It wasn't a good war, but it was the only one we had and Ed Cobleigh went and did what was asked of him and hundreds like him. He shows very clearly what was good and what was bad about the conflict. This is must reading if one is ever going to hope to get a glimpse of the madness of that war. And, it ain't fiction.

"Writing a global history of the second half of this century is, of course, an impossible task."
You've got to give Cambridge fellow David Reynolds credit for such frankness, but it certainly didn't stop him from setting out to accomplish the impossible. Thankfully, Reynolds succeeds brilliantly, as becomes quickly clear from this marvelous, unbelievably readable 860-page survey, roughly bookended by the Berlin blockade and the fall of the Berlin Wall. The project is impossible, "of course," thanks to the subject's staggering size and complexity, but Reynolds takes this in stride, admits his limitations, and digs into a robust, good-spirited, and even-handed analysis, intimidating as a whole but approachable and engaging in its parts.
One World Divisible does tackle it all--the political, social, and cultural changes of an era that witnessed ever-increasing unity, interconnectedness, and globalization. All the usual suspects--the cold war, the decolonization of Africa and Asia, the rebirth of post-war Germany and Japan--get predictably thorough treatment, but Reynolds also takes on the "feminist earthquake" of women's lib and the pill, examines how advances in electronics and genetics far outweighed the impact of exploiting the atom, and even tracks the global spread of "Coca-colonization" and rock & roll. Through it all, Reynolds's readable voice and thoughtful organization keep you reading; discrete, intuitive chapters such as "Israel, Oil, and Islam," "Color, Creed, and Coups," and "Chips and Genes" give you just enough to chew on along the way. A fine beginning to W.W. Norton's ambitious Global Century series. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Global change has accelerated at an unprecedented pace in the last half-century. The trajectory of change points in different directions, with the world growing at once more interconnected and more fragmented. Commerce and migrations, television and the World Wide Web suggest a story of growing interconnection, while at the same time the proliferation of nation-states and the divisions rooted in religion, race, and material inequality tell of separation and conflict. David Reynolds's brilliant history captures both themes and grounds them vividly in the people and events of the last fifty years. Reynolds captures the great political events: the Cold War, the Chinese revolution, independence movements, Vietnam, and the fall of the Soviet Union, and broader developments: economic and population growth, the spread of cities, vast technological change, genetic manipulation, and the creation of a digital world. Carefully avoiding an encyclopedic approach, Reynolds integrates these themes into a narrative with authority, vision, and style. A volume in the Global Century series, books by outstanding scholars on the history of the world in the twentieth century--general editor, Paul Kennedy. 24 pages of illustrations.

MAGNIFICENT SERVICE.......2007-04-07
I have been ordering textbooks for about a yr.now from Amazon. By far, this is the best service I have come across.
Thanks for your excellent customer svc.
well done book marred by bias.......2002-12-06
Admirable in its goal and ambitious in its scope, David Reynolds' One World Divisible offers a truly global history of world events since 1945. Overall, it is a decent summary of the period (if 700 pages can be termed a summary) and could easily and confidently be used as a textbook for almost any modern history course, either as the central text or as a complement (I read it in class focusing on the Cold War). It touches on events in all parts of the world and also on social, economic, political, cultural, and technological trends. Reynolds does a particularly good job of chronicling the years of revolution 1989-1991, when so much was happening in so many different places.
However, for all its utility and detail, Reynolds' political opinions appear far too often--enough that it detracts from the book. Certain words and phrases (such as family values) receive the scornful, mocking quotation marks that academics often use. The tobacco industry is attacked. The American gun lobby is also criticized, and their positions result from a "selective reading of the Second Amendment." The Reagan administration, among other things, is termed "fanatically antigreen." "Many" senior Republicans who sought to impeach Clinton were also adulterers. Samuel Huntington is reduced to an opponent of multiculturalism. Margaret Thatcher responded to the Falklands crisis not only with resolution but also "relish." Vietnam protesters were "dignified."
I am also not quite convinced that his linking of various fundamentalisms (the American Christian Right with Islamic fundamentalists, for example) is appropriate or accurate. And his paean to series editor Paul Kennedy was a bit overdone. Beyond the political bias and some minor flaws of analysis, the book functions fairly well at least as a timeline and also as a generally cohesive picture of the past 50 years.
Simply great.......2001-04-14
It is hard to believe but this breakthrough is a tangible reality. Full of in-deapth research, it covers a wide range of fledging issues in a humourous style. I enjoyed reading it.
One World Divisible; idea of global society - risible.......2001-03-13
Tackling world history of course is no laughing matter and although Reynolds exhibits his sense of humor throughout, there is no doubt that he takes his work seriously (based on the massive amount of research that went into this book) and there is nothing frivolous at all about the central theme of 'One World Divisible'. The basic view is that world history since 1945 has been very contradictory. Reynolds sees a "dialectical process of greater integration" but also "greater fragmentation". He says "the tools of unification...also served as weapons of disintegration - creating new states and sects, reinforcing old cultures and nations". This view of world history as one of change through the conflict of opposing forces is not limited to the ideological battles of the cold war nor even the armed battles of regional hot wars. Reynolds includes the conflicts arising from "reaffirmation of national culture in the face of globalization". Forces that act to seperate at the same time that instant communication, technological revolutions and the global economy are shrinking the world; opposing forces that make the idea of a global society ludicrous. Reynolds however is not talking about a 'Clash of Civilizations' as in Samuel Huntington's book; he still sees world history since 1945 as being primarily a story of nations, not cultures.
In steering away from focusing on cultural influences in world history Reynolds gives us his own personal cultural perspective. The book, he says, is "a limited and personal view"; personal being that of a white middle-aged English academic. The world view of many historians fitting this description sees the cold war as the fulcrum on which all latter 20th century history rests. Not so with Reynolds. He sees this as Western self satisfaction and a blinkered view of history and he certainly does not see victory in the cold war as any great portent for the West. There is a much broader view here, and a wealth of knowledge about the wider world; other worlds even, such as the 'Third World' or the developing world.
'One World Divisible' is encyclopedic; it's full of statistics, tables, dates and mini biographies of world leaders. The amount of data available, strangely enough, is one of the weaknesses of the book. Reynolds has an easy narrative style and a dry sense of humor that make reading enjoyable, but the humor is not able to hold out for the distance - over 800 pages, and the narrative can't quite bring all the data together neatly enough. In the end the book suffers from the same fate as Reynolds' history - coming together but also apart - one book divisible.
competent book but has significant flaws.......2000-07-17
It is indeed quite difficult to encompass two human generations across the whole planet in a single volume of usable length. An author who undertakes such a task is faced with the dilemma of providing facts at the expense of thematic treatment or vice versa. I think that Mr. Reynolds has struck a competent balance. He does not rise to the level of Mr. Barzun but we should not level heavy denunciation for that fact. I imagine that Mr. Kennedy, the general editor of the series is more or less pleased with Mr. Reynolds' effort. That having been said, I am very disappointed in the level of care taken with the presentation of this volume. I have no training as an historian and do not spend my professional days dealing with these facts and issues. But even I was able to spot multiple factual errors in the volume. For example, the long-time ruler of Tunisia was Habib (not "Hamid") Bourguiba. And the recent president of Costa Rica--who won the Nobel Prize, for God's sake! --was Oscar (not Roberto) Arias. These mistakes on relatively simple items diminish the reader's confidence that the rest of the book is accurate. On a personal level, Mr. Reynolds' penchant for running down the character and capacity of American presidents (no matter what party) got a little tiresome. And do we really need to hear about Nancy Reagan's astrologer, not once but twice? Also Mr. Reynolds, like many leftish academics, has not the faintest clue what "supply side economics" was. Once more, people: the tax rate reductions DID NOT cause the deficits. The amount of revenue the treasury realized grew at the same rate under Reagan as it grew under Carter. Supply side economics said nothing about the spending side and it was here that the deficits arose. Finally, the book itself was very poorly proofread.

Product Description
The leading thinkers from the cognitive science tradition participated in a workshop sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories in July of 2003 to discuss progress in building their models. The goal was to summarize the theoretical and empirical bases for cognitive systems and to present exemplary developments in the field. Following the workshop, a great deal of planning went into the creation of this book. Eleven of the twenty-six presenters were asked to contribute chapters, and four chapters are the product of the breakout sessions in which critical topics were discussed among the participants. An introductory chapter provides the context for this compilation. Cognitive Systems thus presents a unique merger of cognitive modeling and intelligent systems, and attempts to overcome many of the problems inherent in current expert systems. It will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of cognitive science, computational modeling, intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction.
