Book Description
It is hard to think of anyone who has contributed so much and so widely to research in international public finance in the last 40 years as has Richard Bird. This volume of essays emerged from a conference dedicated to him. It also expands on our understanding of international public finance.
Bird's academic and applied work has always benefited from a far-reaching involvement with, and knowledge of, relevant policy issues in many countries around the world. The range of public finance issues to which he has contributed over the years covers practically the whole gamut of the public finance discipline: tax policy, tax administration, the interdependency between the two, intergovernmental fiscal relations, public expenditure policy, and fiscal management processes.
The topics covered in this book reflect the wide contributions of Richard Bird to the subject of international public finance, including original reviews of intergovernmental fiscal relations, fiscal policy, and tax evasion and tax administration, all with a special focus on transition and developing countries. The contributors, top scholars in their own right, deepen our own understanding of relevant problems and issues in international public finance, much like Richard Bird has been doing for many years. The book will be of interest to economists, policymakers and students.

Warm, hilarious, enjoyable, refreshing.......2005-04-17
For such a slim book, this one packs in a lot of laughs, insights, and coming of age stories that ring utterly true. Simpson has long been known as having a unique and powerful gift of using humor to make a serious spiritual point, and this book does not disappoint on that front...though, it should be noted, the author's purpose here is not primarily to get "deep" theologically, but to collect some of his favorite anecdotes, jokes, and personal life stories from nearly 50 years of ministry and travel. It's highly enjoyable and highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
wish I knew.......2007-07-26
If I had known the sheet music didn't come with the chords written above the treble staff, I may not have bought this book. So, it was a drag having to write them all in myself for my friend who plays the guitar. Also, Children will Listen and Giants in the Sky should have been included. For 18.95 I would have liked a bigger selection. I am happy with it but feel I had no choice but to settle for what was given...which seemed like 4 songs...okay maybe 8? anyways it's good but it could have been real good, even great ...but I give it 3 stars
Awsome.......2006-11-10
Sondheim is a genius and this score just proves it. It has the best of the songs from Into the Woods! A must have for any musical theare person!
Into The Woods...where's all the music???.......2005-10-14
I can't believe The Last Midnight and Moment in the Woods aren't in this book...the two biggest female solos in the show!!!
Into the Woods: A Must-Have.......2005-09-11
I love this show, and am glad to have at least this many songs from it in one place. However, I wish several more songs were in it, like the whole of "Children Will Listen" and the second "Agony." Oh well -- I guess they have to give us some incentive to buy the complete vocal score. Great songs, though.
Lesser Sondheim Makes an Interesting Vocal Selection........2004-09-19
This is definetly not my favorite Sondheim show. It tends to repeat it self too much, and the music becomes long in the tooth after a while. However, for the vocal selection, they picked some wonderful highlights.
Titles include: INTO THE WOODS, AGONY, IT TAKES TWO, STAY WITH ME, ANY MOMENT, NO MORE, and NO ONE IS ALONE. The reductions make it simpler to play. In fact, I find it the easiest of Sondheim's scores to play. Not to say that a beginner could pick it up and play it, but an intermediate player probaly would find it enjoyable.
Some people bemoan the fact that "Children Will Listen", and "Giants in the sky" are not included here. "Children will Listen" is published seperately, and "Giants..." is included in "All Sondheim Vol. 4". That is if you absolutely want to have those two songs, otherwise it becomes a tad bit costly.
If you enjoy this musical, the vocal selection seems a good place to start to understand this popular score.
Product Description
This is a combination of sheet music, scenes from the original broadway production, credits associated to Stephen Sondheim. The sheet music are for the songs: Into the woods, agony, it takes two, stay with me, any moment, no more, no one is alone. The last page lists the cast from the play

The Writing's On The Wall.......2005-10-02
If you've been to Graceland, this book will bring back wonderful memories. It's what Graceland's all about: Elvis fans communing with Elvis. I've been to Graceland, I've written on the wall, and I've read the wall. It's funny, touching, slightly goofy, in loving memory graffiti, and this book captures that spirit. It's a great little addition to any Elvis collection.
A wonderful keepsake.......2000-10-29
This brought back so many great memories of our last trip to Graceland. What a clever book!
Almost as good as being at Graceland.......1998-12-25
If you've been to Graceland, then you've probably written on the wall, and this wonderful book brings back all those good memories! I laughed and cried at the graffiti Wright has collected.

Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide
ASIN: 0415362024 |
Book Description
Using our favorite Springfield family as a case study, Watching with The Simpsons examines the textual and social role of parody in offering critical commentary on other television programs and genres.
In this book, Jonathan Gray brings together textual theory, discussions of television and the public sphere, and ideas of parody and comedy. As a study, including primary audience research, it focuses on how The Simpsons has been able to talk back to three of television's key genres - the sitcom, ads, and the news - and on how it holds the potential to short-circuit these genre's meanings, power, and effects by provoking reinterpretations and offering more media literate recontextualizations.
Through examining television and media studies theory, the text of The Simpsons, and the show's audience, Gray attempts to fully situate the show's parodic humor within the lived realities of its audiences. In doing so, he further explores the possibilities for popular entertainment television -and particularly comedy- to discuss issues of political and social importance.
Customer Reviews:
A book for the Simpsons Geek in all of us.......2005-06-22
Jonathan Gray has guest lectured several times at a class I teach on The Simpsons and Philosophy at UCB, and I whole heartedly give his work my highest endorsement. Gray's knowledge of parody is well-articulated and incisive and he has a way of conveying his ideas with savvy and wit. Unlike some of those other Simpsons books which have found their way onto bookshelves, this one strikes a balance between satisfying that Simpsons geekdom we all crave and a solid theoretical acumen. His knowledge and love of The Simpsons is top notch, and this book easily compares with the very best of the Simpsons books already published, such as those by Alberti, Pinsky, or Turner.
Book Description
In the not-so-distant past, color reproduction was considered a craft--one handled by skilled craftspeople using proprietary systems. Today--thanks to the proliferation of desktop systems and devices--everyone and their uncle can get their hands in. But the bottom line is this: It¿s still a craft--and to apply color consistently and correctly across various hardware, software, and output devices, you need this hands-on project based guide. As the only Apple-certified tutorial on the topic, this book cuts through the theory to go straight to the heart of the matter: How to set up a Mac OS X-based workflow for those situations in which you employ color: photography and image capture, page layout and content creation, and output (to desktop printer or press). Author and color expert Joshua Weisberg distills a complicated process to its step-by-step essentials through a series of lessons and exercises that you can follow while using the files on the companion DVD.
Customer Reviews:
Horrible.......2006-09-14
Rather than present genuinely useful information on the various theories behind color management which can be applied to a wide variety of situations, the author of this book instead chooses to pad page after page with promotional fluff advertising a select handful of software products the reader is encouraged to purchase in order to follow along. Granted, you can't build a printer profile without a spectrophotometer of some kind, but the tone of the book is generally "go buy this and you're done" rather than "this is what needs to happen and here are a variety of ways you can choose to accomplish these goals". Apple might have invented color management, but they've let their ColorSync CMM grow horribly stagnant (and buggy) over the years, and this officially endorsed training manual reflects the company's priorities unfortunately well. Hopefully Aperture's belly flop will convince someone at Apple that people really do care about this stuff and spur someone into action, but until then, buy Bruce Fraser or Abhay Sharma's book instead.
Demo applications don't work.......2005-09-25
This book has a serious flaw. It includes a demo version of ProfileMaker, which you need to use to create profiles in Lesson 4. Unfortunately, the demo version doesn't actually allow you to create profiles, so you can't complete the lesson! In other words, you really can't use this book unless you spends hundreds more on various software and hardware to actually do the color management.
Title is a misnomer.......2005-06-09
This book should be titled Color Management in Adobe Applications on MacOS X. I picked up this book with the expectation of finding tips on how to print using Apple's Colorsync color management facility but most of the book simply covers printing using Adobe's color management system, which has totally different controls to Colorsync.
While coverage of printing color-managed prints from the Adobe applications such as Photoshop are quite comprehensive, there is hardly any discussion of how to print from a non-Adobe application that uses Apple's Colorsync.
From that perspective, this is a book that is comparable to Real World Color Management but from a less technical, more hands-on viewpoint since RWCM covers Adobe's color management system pretty comprehensively.
It would behoove the author to plug this gap in a future edition because there is a dearth of documentation on Colorsync. Each iteration of Colorsyn brings in new features but leaves it up to users to basically poking around a black box which has a multititude of buttons, levers, and switches but no manual.
Simple introduction to color management on MacOSX.......2005-02-28
A fast book you can read in one day, full of large screenshot all in color.
A step by step book to configure your color workflow in Mac OS X for home or professional, in a only-Mac or Mac-PC office.
A chapter is for Adobe Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design.
There is also a chapter for a web-based color management.
Great Book.
Not too impressed.......2005-02-20
At first when I started reading this book, I was amazed at how fast I was flipping through the pages! I loved it and kepts going. The first part of the book explains color and its management within Mac OS X pretty well, I was impressed when I learnt so much about the color sync. untility and other stuff like that. However, the more I read the more I felt like I was going through the chapters a little too fast for my liking. Why? Because I found that a lot of the times the author would repeat what he said before, making it a bit repetitive....
As much as I do not own a Gretag Macbeth Eye-One or any of those devices that calibrate monitors and other things, I learnt about them in the book. One thing I found odd was that I got pretty much the same information from apple.com's PRO section's online seminars..which was a bummer when I found out.
Anyways, I'm still a bit confused about color management and might have to indulge in another book for a clearer understanding of it. This book just seemed like it didnt explain everything enough for me to really understand. It's easy to follow and click step by step, its hard to understand what you're really doing so u dont need to refer to a book everytime...
Book Description
PFC Franklin Miller arrived in Vietnam in March 1966, and saw his first combat in a Reconnaissance Platoon. So began an odyssey that would make him into one of the most feared and respected men in the Special Forces elite, who made their own rules in the chaos of war.
In the exclusive world of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Studies and Observation Group, Miller ran missions deep into enemy territory to gather intelligence, snatch prisoners, and to kill. Leading small bands of battle-hardened Montagnard and Meo tribesmen, he was fierce and fearless -- fighting army policy to stay in combat for six tours. On a top-secret mission in 1970, Miller and a handful of men, all critically injured, held off the NVA in an incredible Alamo-like stand -- for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. When his time in Southeast Asia ended, he had also received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, an Air Medal, and six Purple Hearts. This is his incredible story.
Customer Reviews:
Don't start this book if you have to wake up early........2007-04-19
I'm not opposed to all wars but I was very much against our involvement in Vietnam. I thought then and still think that we should have been helping the other side. I bought this book wanting to hear what combat was like there from a special forces soldier. Fortunately, the book didn't get into the politics but simply told about his life and job, which was to collect intelligence and kill the enemy. His bravery and what he went through is mind boggeling and the descripions of battles are riviting. I stayed up way past my bedtime reading it.
VERY difficult to put down once you start reading it!.......2006-04-20
WOW, this is one of the most gripping and moving accounts of personal combat and experiences in Vietnam that I have ever read. I had great difficulty putting this gem down, as it is directly related in first-person and the author does a magnificent job of making you feel as if you're right there alongside the subject of the book (Franklin Miller).
Nothing is held back, and if you've ever served in the military, you'll fall right into step with the narration. Everything is presented in all its gory detail, so if you're a little squeamish, you might want to skim across a few sections. The ending is particularly heart-wrenching, especially the afterword by the author's widow.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the up-close and personal views of combat in Vietnam.
A True American Hero.......2005-08-12
As Command Chaplain For US Special Operations Command I had the profound honor of presiding at This hero's funeral. During the months before he died, I spent some days at his home in St Petersburg to offer some spiritual care.
Even to the very end he was a man of strength and courage. He had an abiding faith in Christ that comforted him and allowed him to spend his final days encouraging and supporting his children. As we prayed he would ask me to pray for his children first becuase they were his greatest concern.
He gave me a copy of his book which I read immediately. It is an amazing story that captures the true heart of a warrior. It is a "must read."
Chaplain Lee M. Thompson
Colonel, USAF (Ret)
An inspiration to us all..........2005-05-10
I have been in the Navy for 16 years now and have seen my share of adventure, especially during my flying tour while Bosnia was still raging. It was during that tour that I rescued a paperback copy of this book from our book drawer in our barracks. It was all torn, with the pages falling out. As I carefully read it, I was blown away with Miller's inspirational, charismatic example to any service member. I could not put it down.
This book was the best Vietnam story I have ever read and it must be the defining book on the Special Forces. The only book to come close to this one (with regard to Vietnam) was Rogue Warrior by Dick Marcinko--who I met many years ago during Aircrew School.
Since my paperback copy was so ripped up, I tried to buy the hard copy of it. At the time, it was out of print so it took me years to obtain one on eBay. I highly recommend this book to service members or anyone seriously interested in reading about a true American hero!
Miller should be as well known as Audie Murphy in the 50's.......2005-04-16
I can tell you for a fact that the stories he tells are accurate because I was around him for a lot of them. I think I met him his first day in SF at the SFOB in Nha Trang, and we were both running missions out of Kontum the entire time I was there. If I wasn't around when he did some of the things he talks about,I heard about them from him or others when I got back to the camp. Of course,he was there after I was medi-evaced in Nov of 1969,so I wasn't there when he earned the MOH.
In fact,I had gotten out of the army and did the same thing 99% of the veterans did,I tried to put it entirely out of my mind. I didn't speak about it and I didn't think about it. It came as a surprise to me to walk into Walden Books one day and spot him on the cover of his book getting his MOH! "Hey! I know that guy!" I immediately bought the book and took it home to read.
This was the first I even knew he had survived, and it was the reason I got back in touch with him after almost 30 years. We shared Thanskgiving Dinner together at the unit mess at Camp Mackall the November before he fell sick and died.
If you have ever wondered about the mindset of the people who run special operations, here are the answers. If you have only read VN books written by draftees who write about the heavy drama, drug abuse, and political crap, you are going to be surprised. Not everybody in VN were draftee war protestors, and not everbody there was doing their damndest to avoid combat. Some people were actually going out of their way to carry a rifle in a combat unit. Not only that, but most people would be surprised at the high number of recon and Hatchet Force troops that extended their tours for six months after surviving the intital tour. It even came as a surprise to ME when I extended my tour. I still can't tell you why, other than I felt like I was a part of something important doing a job that needed to be done.
If you want to buy and read this book,PLEASE consider going to the web site below to buy it. This is the hardcover version of the book, and all of the money from the sales of it go to his children. He left behind two teenage children and a infant when he died. I thank you in advance if you do.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Wonderful Look at the Japanese People.......2004-12-02
I read this book for a Japanese History class. The book covers from 1600 to about 1990 the lives of famous and ordinary Japanese men and women. It was refreshing to read about how the political side of history has impacted people and society. Highly recommended!
Revealing and recommended study of Japanese social history........2002-03-29
Ably edited by Anne Walthall (Professor of Japanese history at the University of California, Irvine), The Human Tradition In Modern Japan by is an assemblage of short biographies of ordinary Japanese men and women, most of whom were not well-known outside their home area, spanning the seventeenth through twentieth centuries. Highly recommended for readers with an interest in Japanese history and culture, The Human Tradition In Modern Japan approaches Japanese history and society in a different light, as it debunks commonly myths in the United States about Japan being an entirely "homogenous" society, and successfully presents life in Japan as people really lived it from the 17th to the 20th centuries.
