You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll read it again and again!.......2000-08-07
Nancy Moser's take on the life of the typical wife and mom is right on! She is the master of the clever turn of phrase and her insight into family relationships is keen. You'll take away incredible encouragment from this book but reading it feels like plain ol' fun! Lots of real-life examples, plenty of spiritual 'food'. Highly recommended.
Similar to Erma Bombeck with a spiritual point. Excellent!.......1998-05-10
Short, easy-to-read pieces that really hit home. I could relate. I liked the humor combined with the spiritual lesson. The people lived their faith in every day circumstances. It made me laugh and cry. Covered kids of all ages, relatives and a woman's personal spiritual walk.
Book Description
Designed for use as a method book, this book allows the teacher to vary the approach according to the needs of the student. The book can also be used as a source of carefully graded pieces, for use with any first-year method.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Starting Book.......2004-04-10
I teach piano and have found this book to be superior to numbered method books. The tunes are good and the gradual increase in difficulty is easy to teach. The second accompaniment to be played by the teacher is always interesting and supportive. These are very musical beginning pieces. I recommend this book without hesitation
Young Student and Adult Student Piano Method Book.......2000-08-21

A Great Book For Insiders!.......2002-08-11
As someone who has dabbled in the erotica business, I highly
recommend this most enjoyable and readable volume to those both inside and outside the business. It is a work of scholarship that can be read and enjoyed by the general public as well. The censorship issues it raises are still with us today, in forms
more insidious than ever. I congratulate the author for delving into an area of our society most would prefer to ignore or avoid.
Erotica and Censorship.......2001-05-24
This is a wonderfully conceived and splendidly executed history of the most important formative period of American erotica. Here, thanks to Gertzman's scholarship, the reader will find information available nowhere else: on marginal publishers and sexy books, and on the police and officials who tried to suppress them. The book chronicles investigations and campaigns by assorted smuthunters such as the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, the Post Office, ambitious district attorneys, and the FBI. Gertzman breaks out the huge volume of erotica from underground presses into useful categories, and discusses each in detail, having drawn on neglected archives and hard-to-find resources. For all its careful scholarship, the book is a fine read. The discussion of Samuel Roth, perhaps the most notorious of all American pornographers, is itself worth the price of the book, because it allows Gertzman to speculate on the essential value of pornographers to a culture.
Interesting Story of the Jewish Presence in the Eroticia Bus.......1999-12-10
The author tackles the question of why people who distributed books which were banned or critized as pornography were often Jewish. He has done his homework, digging up prominent examples, and makes comparisons between the other kinds of dirty jobs immigrants and their sons did, and the publishing and selling of smut. Sometimes, this "smut" was great literature; sometimes it was just plain curious and brought in good money during the depression. You get to know some of these men pretty well. You do not like them much, maybe, but you do understand. The author does a good job of explaining the career of the most famous of these publishers, a very complex and haunted man you diskike, but feel sorry for too.
The symbiotic relationship of the writer to his material........1999-11-20
While this author has obviously researched this book emphatically, his personal closeness to the subject has left holes in the text that make the read a bumpy ride. Too much is assumed of the reader when historical fact is alluded to instead of described. I had hoped for a kind of insight into the history that still left me titillated but instead felt like I was in the surgery room of the local hospital. Some of the detail veered off the beaten path and made for a somewhat dry read.
An entertaining history of publishing & censorship.......1999-08-26
This is a very readable, entertaining and well researched study of a period of American book publishing equivalent to the previous century's "Wild West". There are the "bad guys" (the censors) and the "good guys" (the authors and publishers and free speech attorneys) and all are presented as the idiocyncratic characters that they were. There is also an explanation of the whole social mileu that created the battlefield in which this struggle for the freedom to read took place. A great deal of previously unpublished bibliographic material about American erotica is presented, and the footnotes, set at the end of the book to be non-intrusive, contain additional wealths of information for the scholar and academic. The text is enhanced by many vintage illustrations and photographs, often gleaned from private collections.

Customer Reviews:
Too Tacky!.......2006-09-26
I found this book diffiuclt to use, like it's a commercial for the show. The projects were either difficult or lame; come on, cut up a dress for curtains? Maybe my grandmother would have done that in the 30s, but I'm not about to cut up any of my clothing for curtains when I have K-Mart and Target to turn to. Most of the projects were pretty tacky, and below K-Mart and Target standards.
Try "Instant Impact" instead.......2006-06-30
Although this book was ok, the Trading Spaces book, "Instant Impact," was far better in my opinion.
Inspiring But Too Much Fan Club Stuff.......2006-04-07
I liked that it had lots of room photos and tips for projects. Some turned out a bit odd or too home-made for my taste. Who really wants a dark blue wall with silver 5-inch squares stuck on it? I wish I could sew, then I could make a curtain out of a thrift shop dress. It would save lots of money over shopping at Penny's or Sears.
It really does get you to thinking of transforming garage sale finds and throwing around some paint to do a budget makeover for a room.
I didn't really need 13 pages listing episode-by-episode what had happened in each weekly show. I wanted decorating ideas, not a fan club book. Just skip past those parts and enjoy the photos and project ideas. Happy decorating!
There are better budget decorating books out there.......2004-08-24
There are a few good ideas in this book that inspired me, but you really need to have a lot of skills to do most of the projects. For example, it suggests that you can easily paint your own wall hangings, but forgets that some people may not be that artistic. Another suggestion is to build your own bench-style slatted coffee table, as if everyone has carpentry skills. It also says that you can make your own slipcovers, pillow cases, and drapes, just like the ones they show. Sure, it would be cool to have custom-made fabric drapes if I were a seamstress.
There are some step-by-step projects throughout the book called "Thrifty Projects". In one, it tells you how to make a storage bench in 7 steps, but with all the materials you'll need (NOT including all the tools!), it would probably be cheaper to buy one (definitely less hassle!)
Like the title, there are room makeovers from $100 to $1,000. The same room is showed redecorated with first $100, then $500, then $1,000. I was disappointed that every $100 room included paint, which cost at least $50 (except for one room project, it cost $12). Oh, and they only include four of these $100 to $1,000 featured room makeovers in the entire book, despite the title.
If you're interested in Theme Rooms, you may find this a useful book; although, they look a bit tacky to me. I thought the Safari Room was cute for a college student, but the Prison Themed Bedroom was downright creepy!
The Bottom Line: This is basically an advertisement for the television show. In fact, you're better off just watching the show, because there's nothing new here. They only show projects from shows they did, complete with a convenient little program guide in the back. Unfortunately, they left out a Table of Contents, so you have to flip through the book to find something you're looking for. Also, you need to already possess the skills and knowledge to do these "budget" ideas, and the four main ingredients for almost all of the room ideas are paint (and lots of it), fabric, MDF (instead of plywood), and floor tiles.
I'm going to insert a little peeve here I have about all decorating books I've read (about 5 so far): I rent an apartment in a community complex, so I'm not allowed to paint the walls or remove the wall-to-wall carpet to put in tiles or wood floors. Yet in EVERY book I've seen, the emphasis is on paint. Also, why does almost every living room have wood floors AND fireplaces? If any designer/decorator can redecorate a room with a soft white paint job, beige wall-to-wall carpet and white blinds (not allowed to remove them either), and no fireplace for a "focal point", then I would call THAT a decorating challenge!
Fun ideas, but too many fan club fillers.......2004-07-09

The book I've been waiting for........2006-08-29
Finally, a good book about application development with mozilla is available. Cross out the 'Rapid' from the title if you don't like it, because the book actually covers application development with mozilla in general (although it really is rapid with mozilla ;) ).
This book is a must for anybody out there who's up to develop user interfaces or lightweight, portable applications and doesn't want to use Eclipse and Java.
Virtually everything you need to know is covered in clear and unmistakeable descriptions. Examples are included and the good structuring helps using the book as a reference.
Five gold-stars to you, Mr. McFarlane! Within one day your book made it into the hall of fame on my bookshelf!
A must have for XUL development.......2005-10-08
If you're thinking about learning XUL, this is a must have. I haven't been able to put the book down since it arrived at my door. The best part of it yet has been the explanations about javascript. This is as valuable for XUL as it is for normal web development. I've already started and almost completed building my first mozilla application.
a bit disappointed.......2004-11-29
As other readers pointed out, though this book has a lot of information it is a bit messy making it hard for completly newbies to the Moz platform. Every chapter took me one or more deep re-reading (which is not something I appreciated very much).
The code provided is desperatly buggy (-3 stars) and only works with Mozilla 1.4 (precisly, 1.4.1 it won't work!). And as the author points out debbuging is not easy.
Fact is, there's not many books around on the subject.
Do not buy this book.......2004-10-02
I have amassed a large collection of guidebooks, learn-by-example books, and technical reference manuals over the years. I have a fairly short temper when it comes to poorly written books, so I tend to feel them out either at the book store, or if possible, online.
RAD w/Mozilla is no exception. I downloaded the free PDF version from the publisher's website, and have for the last 4 hours, been beating myself senseless trying to make heads/tails of the example code. In a word: Useless.
While the book itself is written in easy-to-read manner gramatically, it absolutely fails as a step-by-step guide for building an app with Mozilla.
Quite simply, the author has spent zero time, or so it seems, consolidating his examples. The slipshod manner in which he presents the examples, by scattering a piece here, a piece there, leaves the reader completely lost as to the continuity of the code. I find myself backtracking from chapter three to chapter two in order to make any sense of the NoteTaker code, and even then, nothing coalesces.
Don't buy this book, it's just awful. Instead, download the PDF available on the publisher's website. Either way, you, the reader, absolutely must follow each section of the book alongside the Errata on McFarlane's website. Without this, the book is nothing more than kindling.
Scientific approach.......2004-07-30
This book gives a very thorough introduction to the Mozilla platform. Some familiarity with XML, CSS and especially javascript and programming in general is certainly useful.
It takes a little time to get used to McFarlane's style, and the structure of the book. If you're in a hurry you might be better of with the O'Reilly Mozilla book.
This book looks quite thorough from a theoretical point of view. It even comprises a small overview of javascript.
Fundamental concepts of the Mozilla platform, like XUL, XBL, RDF, XPCOM and the structure of Mozilla applications, to name just a few, are explained thoroughly and clearly.
If you're serious about Mozilla programming, and have the patience to get a firm grasp of the basics, this is an excellent book.

Book Description
"If you do not know where you come from, you will always be a child." Cicero wasn't talking about being a child in the sense of enjoying life in a state of ignorant bliss. He was, rather, adamant that those who don't understand their origins are consigned to a life without power or authority, without the ability to act fully in the world. Love, Sex & Tragedy is acclaimed classicist Simon Goldhill's corrective to our state of ignorance. Lifting the veil on our inheritance of classical traditions, Goldhill offers a witty, engrossing survey of the Greek and Roman roots of everything from our overwhelming mania for "hard bodies" to our political systems.
Marx, Clark Gable, George W. Bush, Oscar Wilde, and Freud--Goldhill's range here is enormous, and he takes great delight in tracing both follies and fundamental philosophical questions through the centuries and continents to the birthplace of Western civilization as we know it. Underlying his brisk and learned excursions through history and art is the foundational belief, following Cicero, that learning about the classics makes a critical difference to our self-understanding. Whether we are considering the role of religion in contemporary society, our expectations about the boundaries between public and private life, or even how we spend our free time, recognizing the role of the classics is integral to our comprehension of modern life and our place in it.
When Goldhill asks "Who do you think you are?" he presents us with the rarest of opportunities: the chance to let him lead us, firmly but with a wink, back two thousand years to where we are.
Customer Reviews:
Bringing Ancient Greece Alive.......2006-10-31
A very few authors have the ability to make History live, and in this wonderful book the author achieves this. He demonstates how the teachings and the lives of the ancient Greeks permeate our lives, affecting our sexual mores, politics, social lives, entertainment, and how we feel about love and war, about ourselves and others. Indeed, it is difficult to think of some part of modern living not affected by these ancient people. His writing is replete with interesing examples and stories.
The section on Greek Tragedy is worth the price of the book by itself. Having reread the discussion on the Tragedy of Oedipus several times, I find it both difficult and stimulating, getting me to haul out the old tomes I have from college days, particularly the plays of Sophocles (I have started on "Oedipus the King"}.One of the signs of a good book is that it makes you want to read others on the subject.
I urge you to buy and read this book. You will find it very stimulating and enjoyable and will want to add it to your permanent library.
Greek Sex, I mean it's so interesting..........2006-02-25
I bought this book because I like all things Greek - it really fascinates me. I study ancient Greek for the hey of it! This book begins great, too. It starts with the BODY. Anyone who is anyone has seen those sculptures, and maybe this comes from being a hetero female, but I am convinced as to the ideal male body being discovered back in the Greek days. Apparently they were too, since a woman was seen as "deformed." They preferred instead to have sex with "boys." And this book told me all the details. I can't help it, I like Greek tragedy and philosophy and the origins of democracy and all that, but I also like to hear about erect phalluses and how exactly this "Greek love" worked. I got it with this book (along with the other stuff).
Check it out! Maybe you'll slow down a bit when he starts talking about early Christianity, but before that I swear you'll be riveted!
Democracy, art and love - the Greek was there first!.......2005-02-20
If you were in doubt before, you wont be after reading this book: The classical Greek and Roman world influences how we look upon almost everything today. So, if we want to understand modern life and our place in it, for real, we must study our Greek and Roman heritage.
Goldhill does a wonderful job of making the connections from the classical world to our world. His insights does indeed help us tackle our often quite confusing contemporary world a little better. Historical knowledge is always useful! Here it is even entertaining! :-)
-Simon
Clark Gable, Gladiator, and Cicero.......2004-11-21
Simon Goldhill has written a splendid and charming book about how ancient Greek and Roman cultures shape our lives, without us even knowing it. Much has been made in recent years of how politicians turn to ancient authorities for guidance and justification in making difficult decisions. Members of the Bush administration, for example, invoked Thucydides and Herodotus during the build up to our attack on Iraq. And, yet, as Goldhill so smartly explains, we need not view the ancients as distant mentors: they live and breathe within us, for better or worse--influencing everything from how we view sex and gender to what entertains us to how our government works. From sex symbols to sporting events, we are impacted by the cultures of our deep past. Amassing a dazzling array of examples, Goldhill is a wonderful synthesizer and storyteller. Highly entertaining, this book is recommended for any general reader, including young adults, interested in ancient history.

Excellent and Informative.......2006-08-29
It is wonderful and rare to find a book that is essentially philosophy written in a way that makes it a pleasure to read. A few of the topics discussed:
* How the modern image of the body was formed in the gymnasium of ancient Greece, which had personal trainers, fad diets, etc.
* How St. Paul and the early Christians considered marriage an "honourable institution" meaning not nearly as good as chastity or celibacy, but much better than fornication.
* How self knowledge must include knowledge of the history of one's culture.

Book Description
In this evocative book the reader follows Edward Stokes on an unforgettable journey across Hong Kong's natural landscape, learning along the way the story of Hong Kong's environment. By way of photographs and entertaining narrative the author takes us through Hong Kong's wild places - towering peaks, grassy hills, wooded valleys, and coastal waters - revealing the surprisingly varied life that survives among them. This book documents the dramatic changes to Hong Kong's hills, valleys, and coasts, from their natural origins millions of years ago to the effects of overdevelopment in the 1990s. The author brings to light the unrelenting natural and man-made challenges to Hong Kong's environment - climatic conditions, population pressure, industrialization, and pollution. He celebrates the present beauty and grandeur of the remaining wild places, and highlights the recent damage wrought by man.

Makes the Most of Hong Kong's Unique Wilderness.......2000-06-07
Inexhaustable hiker Ed Stokes has produced THE book of Hong Kong's natural beauty. The photographs alone raise this large book to coffee-table status, but the text offers fascinating glimpses of the SAR's (that's Special Administrative Region's) history.
It served me well when I wanted to find some new places to hike in Hong Kong. No really useful maps here (that's not the point of the book), but all the photos are accurately labeled, making his discoveries - like old abandoned villages and picturesque coves - a snap to find on government maps.
Really a valuable keepsake for anyone living in or visiting Hong Kong.
Fantastic Guide To Hiking in Hong Kong.......2000-04-16
This is an indispensable guide to trails in and around Hong Kong island. Stokes exposes the reader to aspects of Hong Kong that are overlooked by most tourist. The reader soon realizes that there is a treasure of wild places on this relatively small island. I was inspired to explore all the trails he suggested.
