Easy to understand reference book........1998-01-04

I attended a Fiber Optic class taught by Mr. Pearson and found him to be an excellent instructor. This book is written the same way he teaches and is easy to understand. Since I don't build fiber cables on a daily basis I keep this book in front of me when I do build them. If you have never been taught to build fiber cables you can learn how from this book. However, you should note that building good fiber cables takes practice no matter how you learned to build them. Read this book carefully and you can do it.

The book was good but I was looking for more of a price guide, however, my husband is enjoying it.

An interesting read but loaded with errors and typos.......2004-05-05

Having been a record collector for over 40 years, I am always interested in new books on the topic. One can never know everything about the hobby and indeed, I gleaned quite a few new pieces of information from this book. (A collectable three 8-Track Beatles set exists, as do 78s of such 60's evergreens as Ray Charles' "Georgia On My Mind" and the Everly Brothers' "Cathy's Clown").

However, this book is littered with inaccuracies. The reference to Arturo Toscanini as an opera singer who refused to sing on record until 1936 is ludicrous - not only because Toscanini was a conductor and not a singer, but because he did in fact record with the La Scala Orchestra during the pre-1925 acoustic era.

The Russian State-owned record label is referrred to as "Melodisc" rather than its correct name, Melodiya.

The author claims that there was no U.S. issue of the Black Dyke Mills Band's Apple single "Thingumybob" (There was - Apple 1800 - I own it.)

And from page 98, this pearl of wisdom about tape speeds: "[Reel-to-Reel] Tapes were issued at two speeds: 7 1/2ips (inches per second) and the sonically superior 3 3/4 ips, the standard to which both the later 4-Track and 8-Track cartridges adhered.." Ask any audio engineer which speed is "sonically superior". I could make this review a mile long with such examples.

There are also plenty of misspelled names here too: Paul Gayton (Gayten), Hal Blain (Blaine), Deutsche Gramophone (Grammophon), and on and on, but you get the point. This book is an interesting read, but if you know the subject, these errors come frequently and get more irritating each time. Backbeat Books needs to hire a proofreader.

Which Arturo Toscanini are we talking about?.......2004-01-31

In an excerpt from this book posted on amazon, the statement is made that one Arturo Toscanini set the record industry back, in the 1920s, by refusing to allow his voice to be recorded. The Arturo Toscanini that most music lovers remember was conducting La Scala and the New York Philharmonic around that time. We don't think he was singing. Can the author address this? Perhaps I read the excerpt wrong. In this case, we're not talking about an obscure historical figure.

Informative and well-written.......2002-12-29

Although my first impression of this book was mixed - originally I wasn't happy that Thompson had devoted almost two-thirds of the book to overviews of individual record labels - after I started reading it I discovered that there is a lot of essential information contained in his look at the various labels, including when they started, who founded them, and some of the collectable (and not so collectable) artists signed to them.

The first third of the book is equally worthwhile. The author discusses not only the collecting of vinyl, but also delves into 8-tracks, cassettes, CDs and virtually all other types of recorded media. It's obvious that he knows what he is talking about. All too many books dealing with collecting something-or-another often are written by uninformed writers who seem to have just discovered whatever it is they are writing about.

I didn't care much for his "Top Ten Collectables" boxes that are scattered throughout the book - but that's a minor point, and a matter of personal preferance. Although in writing a book of this nature, it is essential to discuss "what it's worth", but for me, that's the least important aspect of the book.

Thompson has written an excellent, well-researched book on a subject that has had, with the exception of price guides, very few volumes devoted to it. One can hope that any future books dedicated to record collecting will be as enjoyable as this one is.

Lukewarm.......2007-06-06

Interesting read, but the same theme of "Vivian disliked Bill" and "Bill disliked Vivian" kept repeating over and over without giving out too many details. I like real juicy, gossipy insiders view but this only skimmed the surface of the two actor's relationships to one another. The book mostly focused on the two individually rather than both of them together. You get a detailed description of Bill and Vivian's acting careers and how they evolved, which in my opinion, wasn't that interesting. I had to skim over a lot of pages because it just wasn't that insightful. "Next Bill went to this play. Then he went to that play. Then this one. etc. etc." Come on, give us the scoop! :) So that's why I only rated it 2 stars. I'm a huge I Love Lucy fan, but this book doesn't even have a reserved spot on my bookshelf. I'm selling it, anyone interested? Like new condition!

Good Biography.......2007-01-24

While it sometimes summarizes too much, it gives a lot of insight into the lives of Vivian and Bill. This is the only book to learn about the interesting life of Bill Frawley. If you read The Other Side of Ethel Mertz, the book will seem repetitive.

This book had so much useless information I could barely get through it. What a waste of paper! I have loved watching the Mertzes on I Love Lucy, so I bought this book to learn a bit more about them. Well, with the info that is in the book, that task could have been accomplished in 10 pages. Instead there is a lot of useless, BORING, information that no one cares about. Furthermore, It paints such ugly pictures of both of those people. I am sorry I every bought this rag. If you love Lucy & the Mertzes, you will honor them by NOT purchasing this book!

Great book for all I Love Lucy fans. These are 2 people you can't find on the biography website. Enjoyed the book very much. I Love Lucy would have not been the same without Fred and Ethyl. No one could have played the parts as well as William Frawley and Vivian Vance. A must read book.

As Web Services get implemented, this book can be a vital tool in planning for the deployment. The authors have a rigorous methodology to estimate the many performance issues encountered when you try to build out an actual Web Service. They discuss important ideas like content delivery networks, which cache or mirror content at different physical locations, so that the response time to a user's query is minimised. And it also adds redundancy. Think Akamai, for instance.

A crucial aspect they explain is how to develop a cost model for a data centre facing a certain expected rate of queries coming in from the net. Practical advice on what things to cost out and how to do so, as shown in various examples.

Most books on Web Services published after this book often discuss the networking together of various services. Using WSDL or BPEL to describe these configurations. BPEL may not have even existed in 2001 when the book was published. But the book is certainly not outdated. Nothing in it is tied to a specific version of a Web Services grammar. Those other books are more about explaining the syntax. Few delve into actual deployment scaling issues that cannot be avoided if you have to go live.

Old friend gets facelift and becomes more beautiful.......2002-07-06

Although the title is new, this book is based on the authors' 1998 book titled "Web PErformance Metrics, Models and Methods (ISBN 0136938221). This book is more than a minor rewrite - the chapters are in a different sequence, and each has been updated. None of the information that made the older book such a valuable resource was lost in the process. For example, the material on queuing theory and analysis remains, and it among the best written tutorials in print. What has changed includes:

(1) Shifting of focus from client/server and web server environments to web services, with an emphasis on performance characteristics of SOAP and UDDI. Client server issues are still covered because these issues are still germane.

(2) An emphasis on architecture and how performance and capacity fit into a larger picture. Network and server performance characteristics are examined in detail.

What hasn't changed includes the excellent material on performance and benchmarking basics, detailed analysis techniques, and the support for this book that the authors provide on the book's web site. I especially like the Excel spreadsheets that you can download to use in conjunction with material in nearly every chapter.

Overall, this is one more of a series of books on various aspects of performance and capacity management. I also recommend reading their companion book, "Scaling for E-Business: Technologies, Models, Performance, and Capacity Planning" (ISBN 0130863289), which covers the applications level of e-commerce systems and seamlessly complements the material in this book.

Santiago Camacho is a well known Spanish Journallist. His books use to be controversial but showing the facts in a well documented and objetive manner, surpasing the documentaton quality avaible on internet.

On my opinion, one of the most overwhelming facts exposed on the book is the "stolen roots" of the christianity, showing the similarty between scriptures of ancient civilizations, and the depicted ones on we know as (catholic) Holy Scriptures.

Other impressive fact documented on this book is how Third Reich put a big effort on chasing his esoteric roots in very disparated places like Southamérica, Antártida and Tibet.

Is a must read books for whom want to know the things that shall never appear on mass media.
