The Ministry is Peter Hartcher's fascinating look into Japan's most powerful, but least known institution, the Ministry of Finance. It's an institution that's firmly embedded in Japan's cultural fabric and can trace its origins back 1200 years. It's been compared to the IRS, the SEC, the Federal Reserve, and U.S. Treasury all rolled into one. And it's largely responsible for the economic mess that Japan finds itself in today.

Hartcher's account is the story of a ministry who arranges marriages for its key personnel, a place where employees rarely go home, and where staff members routinely die of exhaustion caused by overwork. Hartcher shows that even though the Ministry's nationalistic policies have helped to create phenomenally low unemployment, its resistance to open markets and increasing incompetence is a dangerous liability, not only to its own economy, but the global economy as well. Anyone who's interested in how Japan really works will find this an indispensable read.

    Book Description

Imagine the IRS, the SEC, the FED, and the U.S. Treasury all rolled into one agency, so that the resulting bureaucracy could do whatever it wanted, reporting to no higher authority. It's the stuff of Orwell in the U.S. It's reality in Japan: the Ministry of Finance, Japan's almighty Okurasho. Its power is unbridled and, as Peter Hartcher reveals in The Ministry, its actions are increasingly self-serving. This timely book is the first account in English of Japan's Ministry of Finance, the most powerful and the least scrutinized ministry in Japan, obscured until now by its cousin, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Hartcher, currently the Asia-Pacific editor for The Australian Financial Review, exposes the Ministry as only a beat reporter can: a network of good old boys who met in the elite Tokyo University Law School, and who've had very little financial or economic training, if any. What's more, the Ministry has the power to install its own members into key leadership positions throughout Japan's business world, thereby controlling most of the country's largest corporations, banks, and financial institutions. Any manager, investor, or regulator who deals with Japan should read this book. Using sources inside Japanese business and government, Hartcher documents how the Ministry, which traces its medieval origins and authority back to a divine mandate to build the nation at any cost, is acting increasingly from pure unenlightened self-interest despite the Japanese people's tireless trust in it. It is a dangerous institution to world financial markets and economic growth, and one that must be radically reformed before it's too late.

The entangling bureaucracy that keeps a chokehold on Japan is exposed at last! I doubt if the Japanese Ministry of Finance wants you to read this one! Hartcher not only exposes how the bureaucracy works but also explains why Japan will always face an uphill battle until it is conquered. An excellent look at the ceremonial democracy that manages Japan!

2 out of 5 stars Ministry of Finance.......2000-11-17

I read this book before being seconded into the Japanese Ministry of Finance, and I'm afraid that not only has much of the material suffered badly from the passage of time, but the (perhaps inevitable) selective use of anecdotes risks leaving the unwary reader with a rather warped view of the MoF.

The workings of the Japanese political system and the bureaucracy have been subject to many critiques however, although Hartcher limits himself to examining just the MoF, he does not sufficiently focus his analysis to produce a truly enlightening text. Sadly, certain areas of the book are also subject rather exaggerated and, while such liberties may help make dramatic titles and sell copy, they do not make for informed debate.

Although there are very few other English language texts that focus on the MoF, this one is not scholarly and I would advise you to skip it (there is another book on MoF by Brown - available on Amazon - but I have not read it yet). Gerald Curtis provides more insightful comment into Japanese politics, and Takatoshi Ito offers a far better review of the workings of the Japanese economy. These texts may be more general, but they will give readers a more balanced and rounded view of the Japanese political and economic system.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating peek inside the inner-workings of the MOF.......1999-10-12

Very informative, very revealing, very insightful!

Hartcher leaves no stone unturned in his mission to detail the power base assembled at the Ministry.

5 out of 5 stars great insights into a world that few ever see.......1999-03-09

fantastic investigative reporting with compelling analysis. as easy to read as a good spy thriller and as informative as a good textbook. valuable reading for anyone interested in Japanese finance and the relationship between bureaucrats, politicians, and business.

      Book Description

This first full length expose in English of Japan's all-power institution, the Ministry of Finance, not only reveals the inner workings of the Ministry but also sounds a warning about the impact of its growing abuses of power on world financial markets. Japan's Ministry of Finance-the mighty Okurasho-controls the majority of the country's largest corporations, banks, and national financial institutions. Yet, it bows to neither Parliament nor the Prime Minister. In effect, its actions can sway the Japanese economy and affect financial markets worldwide. The real danger lies in the fact that it has focused on nation building at any cost, acting increasingly from pure unenlightened self interest-as evidenced by its role in the recent Daiwa scandal. This timely and engaging book sound a warning that any manager, investor, or regulator who deals with world markets, and especially with Japan, cannot afford to ignore.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Topic Marred by Serious Flaws.......1999-06-21

Redneck Heaven was a disappointing hodge-podge on the sector of the American population that consider themselves "rednecks." Though it promises to deliver the goods, it consistently falls short, and the blame for this is as much the editor's as the author's.

Bultman's chief theme here is that American rednecks are a continuation of ancient Celtic tribes. While it's an interesting theory, Bultman doesn't seem to have the scholarship to back it up. Nevertheless, she frequently returns to it.By the end of the book, the reader is sorely tired of this deathless refrain.

Credibility is further strained by numerous fact errors (Boadicea, the warrior queen of the British tribe, the Iceni, is not spelled Boudicae and not pronounced Boodika, as the author instructs, "I'm a W-O-M-A-N" was popularized by Peggy Lee in the fifties and not Maria Muldaur in the seventies, calves do have hooves when they are born . . .) The problem with these sorts of errors is that they cast a pall on the authority Redneck Heaven purports to have. The much vaunted "interviews with famous rednecks" appear only in the first few chapters and come across as name dropping.

Finally, the production values of Redneck Heaven are decidedly substandard. Pages are bound out of order, photographs lack cutlines and sidebars are inserted in such a way that the reader has to stop and search to keep his place in the text.

This is a fascinating subject and Ms. Bultman has a wealth of wonderful material here. It's a real letdown that it wasn't a better-organized, better-produced and thoroughly fact-checked book. What a worthy title it would have been.

            5 out of 5 stars Need-to-know Americana.......1998-05-04

"Redneck Heaven" is a wonderful, enlightening look at an often misunderstood major segment of our culture. Ms. Bultman does us a great deed in separating Rednecks from "trailer trash" and helping us see that more of us are rednecks than we might want to admit. After reading this book, I was quick to realize how many people could be defined by the information provided (one of the first people I recognized as a true redneck was Charlton Heston). Congratulations to Bultman for elevating this segment of our society from the stigma it undeservingly suffered for so long.

5 out of 5 stars redneck heaven is a heaven to read.......1998-03-12

redneck heaven looks at our national celt vs anglo saxon cultural contradictions. why are we obsessed with paula jones instead of looking hard at how the dow jones is screwing small town america? are the rednecks who fight our wars, make our jeans and harleys this society's villians or corporate america's victims? read this book and find out.

            5 out of 5 stars Cultural Eye-Opener.......1998-02-19

A really great read for those of us who think of ourselves as "jist American." A kind of "Roots" for the Scotch Irish!

5 out of 5 stars Red hot mama's self help manual to fun.......1997-11-18

Wow. I never knew redneck women were so smart. They can be the boss and have fun at the same time. Didn't know this was a self-help book, but it is and how. The writer should win the Pulitzer for cool. And funny. It's the funniest darn book I've ever read.

Misha Stefanuk has created a fine book for jazz pianists in his JAZZ PIANO SCALES & MODES. Concise, logical, and enjoyable learning experiences sum up this fine book. For the jazz pianist interested in the variety of scales and modes available, this is an excellent reference book. For example, take a close look at page 15 on scales, and the information given. Other sections of great interest include the exotic scales and scales by key, and chords. This a book to share with friends. It is also a book that offers new insights each time it is opened. Well-written, flawless in concept. Congratulations to the author on a job well done!

Ads are everywhere. They are accused of making us smoke, drink, lose weight, and buy things we don't need. But of course we can see through them--or so we say. So how do ads work? How do they draw on and shape the rest of our culture? Ad Worlds is a readable introduction to the ways ads are produced, transmitted and interpreted, drawing on work in cultural studies, discourse analysis and marketing. It argues that advertising is not monolithic or all-powerful, and illustrates the complex and unpredictable effects of ads as they travel through the different worlds of the client, the agency and the medium--before ultimately reaching ours. Myers focuses on the strategies that shape an ad, its circulation, and the responses to it. Each chapter is centred on an analysis of memorable (or not so memorable) ads from Britain and the United States, on posters, on television, or on the World Wide Web. This book deals with critical perspectives on advertising but also shows the author's genuine enjoyment of ads, their ingenuity and excitement.

                  Book Description

From its first appearance in 1978 to its final episode in 1981, Blake's 7 was a series which pushed back the boundaries of what was possible in TV science fiction. Despite the attempts made by critics over the years to deride it for its low-budget special effects, sometimes-dubious costume design and overly middle-class casting, Blake's 7 continues to remain popular and to gain new audiences, due to its intelligent treatment of powerful themes of human evil, rebellion, love and death. In this book, Alan Stevens and Fiona Moore go beyond the stereotypes and look at the background to and the writing of the stories. Including technical details, overviews of the production of the series and in-depth analyses of every episode, together with a number of previously-unpublished photographs, this book is the ideal companion for anyone interested in the development of TV science fiction during the late seventies. "... a wealth of detail about the early development of the series." From the foreword by series producer David Maloney.

                  5 out of 5 stars Exceeding expectations.......2006-04-01

Michael Trott's GuideBooks are an invaluable reference for the serious Mathematica programmer. The unsurpassed symbolic computation engine, superior programming paradigms, lightning-fast numerics, and state-of-the-art visualization can justly be considered four of the main pillars of the Mathematica system, and Michael Trott, himself a well-established and renowed expert programmer at Wolfram Research, provides the most in-depth coverage available in these areas. Unlike the contents normally to be found in a numerics book, this numerics GuideBook includes several methods and principles from other fields of mathematics and programming. This GuideBook is truly astonishing in terms of its breadth. The material is highly relevant for the ambitious numerics programmer, and the writing style is very readable, fluent, and consistent. The structure of the material is logical and break-free, and the examples are very well-chosen.
Several elucidating examples also further the knowledge about the mathematical or physical subject matter itself. Just to mention a few, I was amazed to discover that magnetic field lines of stationary flows are NOT closed in general, and some examples of modern mathematics and physics literature are used in contrast to classical physics, such as the continuous time random walk on a graph or quantum carpets in a solution, which provides an interesting classical vs. quantum variant. And next to textbook examples the reader will find many "real life" examples interspersed throughout the book as well, which makes the results quite "tangible".
Michael Trott includes a great comparison of Mathematica's superior compilable machine precision arithmetic (bytecode, instead of machine-code compilation), high-precision arithmetic, and interval arithmetic, all three of which are needed frequently depending on the numerics project at hand.
Needless to say, the book shows a profusion of carefully chosen graphics that help understanding the matter or result instantly. Here Michael Trott's expert ability as a graphics programmer is indispensible.

Dirt cupcake mix, as American as apple pie. Nipple lightener from Japan. Tick juice, indispensable in Venezuela for black magic love rituals. Sunglasses from Zimbabwe with shades cut from plastic juice bottles and no lenses. Korean disposable straw sandals made especially for mourners and corpses. Is this stuff cool or what? But wait--there's more. Flip through this book in search of international weirdness, and it's a pretty sure bet you'll wind up absorbing some sobering information about sex, death, destruction, poverty, and the arrogant ways of multinationals. Under the guise of an ultrahip consumer's guide to the world's nifty stuff--divided into sections labeled "Food," "Fashion," "Animals," "Body," "Soul" and "Leisure"--1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a subversive crusader for human rights and ecological awareness.

Sure, you can find out how to buy your very own Dom Perignon-flavored sorbet or a CD of "Music for Healthy Pets." But you'll also stumble upon objects like the cute little bright green Russian-made PFM-1 antipersonnel mine, "a favorite toy of generations of Afghan children" punished for their curiosity by a double whammy of liquid explosive and tiny blades. On other pages, seemingly innocuous objects--like the sweetly lumpy doll couples made of tree bark by Elliot Chitungu of Zimbabwe--turn out to have a bitter subtext. (Chitungu, who is gay, makes all his couples heterosexual; in his country, homosexuality is a criminal offense.) Other objects are examples of savvy recycling, like the paper made in Malawi from elephant dung and recycled cardboard.

With straightforward descriptions in both English and French, unblinking photographs of young people modeling even the most outré objects, and a Yellow Pages that includes information about little-known charitable organizations worldwide, this is a fun book with a heart of gold. --Cathy Curtis

                    Book Description

A humorous and educational guide to "everyday" stuff from all over the world Things, objects, stuff, trinkets, tools, materials, gadgets, the things we use, abuse, throw away, cherish, depend on: these are the things we own, simple objects for our everyday lives. They may or may not hold special meaning to us, but their importance, as objects of cultural identity, is unmistakable.

Produced by COLORS under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, famous for his controversial Benetton campaigns, 1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a humorous and educational guide to stuff from all over the world. Discover the wonderful absurdity of a priest's portable mass-in-a-briefcase kit, or the stunning difference between flyswatters from Zimbabwe and South Korea. Ogle at the juxtaposition of neoprene surfing shoes and bullfighting slippers; have a gander at a can of blowfish soup. You'll see that what is ordinary halfway across the world (or perhaps for your neighbors across the street) may be totally foreign to you.

In case you see something that you absolutely must have, check out the yellow pages section at the end of the book; here you can find out where to get it and even how much it costs, as well as lots of little tidbits of interesting information to make your journey complete. Next time you pick up your toothbrush or comb your hair, you may think twice about the things that you use every day - perhaps they're not so ordinary after all.

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.

This digital document is a journal article from Journal for Nature Conservation, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

                              Description:
As conservation planning increases in scale from specific sites to entire regions, organisations like The Nature Conservancy face a critical need for GIS-based tools to evaluate landscapes on a regional scale. An existing, field-based approach to analyse the diversity of a landscape is by delineating natural community types, which is a time-intensive process. This study evaluated the utility of using an existing, GIS-derived landscape diversity model as a predictive tool for mapping natural communities on a large (8369ha) upland forest site in the northern Taconic region of Vermont. The GIS model incorporates four geophysical factors: elevation, bedrock type, surficial deposits, and landform. A significant level (@a=0.05) of association between eight pairs of landscape diversity unit (LDU) types and natural community types was found. However, the strength of these associations is low (Cramer's V values = <0.172), suggesting a poor predictive efficiency of landscape diversity units for natural community types. The results suggest that variables in the LDU model are relevant to natural community distribution, but the LDU model alone is not an effective tool to aid in mapping of natural community types of upland forests in Vermont. Until better landscape-level techniques are developed, the role of this type of model is limited to screening the landscape for areas with a particular set of geophysical characteristics, which can help an ecologist interpret the patterns on the landscape, but cannot substitute for a field-based approach to natural community mapping.
