      Book Description

The Washington financier who first proposed creation of a trust fund to retire the national debt has written a book outlining a new plan that would prevent Congress from raiding the fund to supplement the cost of regular government programs. In 1982 he suggested a temporary 5% tax on manufacturers sales. The income would go into a debt trust fund similar to the highway trust fund. The $1 trillion federal debt would have been retired in five years (by 1985 or 1986) under that proposal. In the past decade, however, federal trust fund have not fared as well. For example, contributions to the social security fund essentially are "borrowed" for the regular budget. The trust fund contains federal I.O.U.s. A special tax that raised secure funds exclusively for debt retirement might well get public support. Without federal interest payments, the 1992 federal deficit would have been cut to $114 billion from $314 billion. Washington banker and attorney Charles W. Steadman, who made the 1982 proposal, now has eliminated the trust fund from his method of paying off the debt. In The National Debt Conclusion: Establishing the Debt Repayment Plan, (Praeger Publishers, November 1993), Steadman lays out his proposal to eliminate the debt in ten years. Steadman would issue new debt bonds for existing federal government debt securities in a single exchange. A sales tax at the producers' level would be dedicated solely to paying off the new debt bonds on schedule. There would be no trust fund. The rate of the sales tax would be scheduled to raise only enough money each year to call the bonds scheduled for retirement in that year. The debt bonds could be retired only by income from the special purpose tax. Steadman's plan establishes a contract between the government and the bondholders, who would have no claim on general funds of the United States. The Congress would have no way to borrow from the debt retirement receipts. Steadman argues that America must adopt a fundamentally different fiscal structure before the debt burden ultimately causes collapse of the nation's financial structure.

5 out of 5 stars Interviews executed with tact and prfessionalism.......2006-01-22

Anthony's book shows us, the reader, how interviews can be handled in a professional, smart way to engage the subject, triggering that person to open up and reveal the business of music and the creativity of his/her soul. My favorite interview is where Keith Richards talks about his daughters sneaking into bed with him while he is asleep and waking up to find them next to him.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of rock n' roll wit and wisdom.......2005-11-11

Written by one of the most esoteric giants of rock n' roll writers, "In other words" is simply funny and fascinating. Anthony DeCurtis sure got around the music scene and it's all here. 7SD rocks!

5 out of 5 stars This book is simply superb, especially for Eight Legged Baboons.......2005-11-10

Octaroons (people over 100 and baboons with eight legs) will find this book absolutely wonderful. I found out about this fine book from my good friends, Andy Breckman and Friedman, International Comedic Envoy for the UN. However, this show is pathetic, but just as hilarious as the Wikipedia one. Everyone should buy this book. Seven Second Delay Rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Zen of Rock.......2005-10-15

I had the distinct pleasure of listening to Mr. DeCurtis speak to my History of Rock and Roll (taught by the best teacher ever) class at Indiana University in the Spring of 2004. This was definitely one of the highlights of my collegiate acamdemic career. Anthony's knowledge and experience in the music world is astonishing and his way with words in the recollection of his stories give his listeners a feeling that he not just a writer, but a true music fanatic. In fact, I was so enthralled by Mr. DeCurtis' stories, I attended every section of the classes he was scheduled to address that day. Although I have not read this particular book, I have read his others and would highly suggest them. Based on my readings of his other books, and seeing Anthony speak, I plan to buy this book as soon as I can, and I would bet that I will love it, and most other music lovers will as well.

            Book Description

The past several decades have witnessed thousands of studies into children and the media. Yet, much academic research is still in its infancy when it comes to our knowledge about the uses, preferences, and effects of different media. This distinctive volume moves the field forward in this regard, with its insights into the latest theories and research on children and the media. Author Patti M. Valkenburg explores "screen" media (i.e., television, films, video and computer games, and the Internet), and focuses her study on the most fundamental topics in the study of children and the media.

In each chapter, Valkenburg examines an essential topic on children and the media: the effect of media violence, children's emotional reactions to news and entertainment, the intended and unintended effects of advertising, and the uses and effects of computer games and the Internet. She has structured the chapters to provide an overview of existing theories and research on a particular topic, and supplements the work of others with her own ground-breaking research findings. She provides a careful and even-handed treatment of research in children's media, and includes current and noteworthy studies.

As a resource for study in children and media and media psychology, this volume provides a timely and thorough examination of the state of theory and research. It will serve as a valuable reference for scholars and as an engaging text for advanced students.

For the millions of GPS owners who love their GPS units but don't know all they can do with them, this fun guide shows that a GPS can do a lot more than just calculate a location. Dozens of illustrated examples show how a GPS can be attached to a multitude of devices, including dogsleds, race cars, hot-air balloons, windsurfers, pet animals, ski racers, hockey players, and sailboats. Each example includes maps and photographs to inspire hobbyists, airline passengers, athletes, animal lovers, drivers, teachers, and students to track and map their activities. How to incorporate GPS mapping technology in the classroom in order to reinforce science, math, and geography curricula, provide the groundwork for project-based learning, and show students that their schoolwork is important and relevant is discussed.

5 out of 5 stars delightful and practical!.......2005-11-23

This is a spectacular book that treats GPS with a light (and fun) touch without any sacrifice of technical substance. Though aimed at beginners, GPS savants will find it equally useful, both for elegant insights as well as ideas on how to teach others about GPS. I teach land navigation and regularly consult this book for inspiration regarding new ways to keep the material fresh in my classes.

5 out of 5 stars Geospatial Reading - Fun With GPS hits the mark!.......2005-10-28

During a recent flight, included with my carry on luggage was a copy of "Fun With GPS", a relatively new publication from ESRI press by Don Cooke. The author is the founder of GDT, recently acquired by Tele Atlas, and has an extensive resume, including having played a key role in the creation of TIGER.
Jumping right in, the book provides the reader with an introduction to GPS along with a useful primer on mapping and the proper use of a GPS. The "meat" of the book is really from Chapters 3 onward. This is where Cooke provides numerous informative, educational, and interesting examples of real-life uses and applications of GPS. Even better, each example explains (in detail) a fun use, detailed instructions, photos/images, useful web links, and interesting commentary.

Particularly useful (and educational) small sections devoted to mapping, GIS, accuracy, and GPS concepts & terminology are included. After all, simply capturing and storing GPS coordinates is hardly of use, particularly to the layman. It's the understanding of the data, along with integration of maps and/or GIS that really makes GPS fun! A particularly interesting and "bang on" quote from the book that really struck a cord with me... "GIS really does put the fun into GPS". My take... indeed it does!

So who should buy or read Fun With GPS? If you happen to be one of millions of users of a GPS or a GPS-enabled mobile device then you'll no doubt find this book to be a valuable addition to your library. Can the book provide specific examples that apply to your lifestyle? Likely so since numerous specific examples and applications of GPS uses have been provided. These include:
              Geocaching
              Degree confluence chasing
              GIS/mapping
              Ice skating
              Hockey
              Skiing
              Racing (auto)
              Hiking
              Sailing
              Polo
              Camping
              Golf
              Rowing
              Sky diving

If you happen to have a hobby included above then Don has provided a detailed example application of how you will find GPS to be useful and fun.

Finally, the heart of the book comes in chapters 2 and 8. Chapter 2 offers an awesome primer on mapping. Cooke uses the free ArcExplorer GIS data viewer from ESRI and the complimentary (and free) DNR Garmin program from the Minnesota DNR as the focus of a tutorial on using your GPS data with a GIS without spending a dime. Both programs are totally free and detailed instructions for use have been provided to get you up and running and help get your GPS data off the device and used within a real application.

Chapter 8 is devoted to the use of GPS in schools and in the community. Interesting sample uses focus on the use of GPS by a museum to track visitors, mapping of a restored cemetery by grade school students, and even how to write your name with a GPS track log. Students attempting any of these sample projects will no doubt get a great introductory education to mapping and geospatial concepts, but will still have some addictive fun with their GPS as well... they may also even solve a community problem or address a local conservation issue.

Fun with GPS is truly a fun read. I admit, I have a dusty, 2 year old Garmin somewhere on my desk, however, it wasn't until I read this book that I had much interest in turning it on! I plan on locating a geocache in the near future and I also plan on capturing a degree confluence or two!

Do you remember when a GPS device was expensive and heavy and only to be used for serious work? The inexorable progress of Moore's Law has laid that low. So along comes ESRI Press with this lighthearted book by Cooke. Outreach to the young masses. He talks about fun and cool things you can do with a GPS transponder. All the things we never had.

You might wish to thumb through his suggestions. See if any catch your fancy. Or, if you like these ideas, try also looking up the magazine "Make" published by O'Reilly. It has the same freewheeling spirit seen here.

Think 'GPS' and what comes to mind? Maps and photos come with each outlined project for hobbyists, athletes, drivers, teachers and more. Use GPS devices to track and map activities, or in a treasure hunt, or to GPS a model airplane's abilities: there's a lot a GPS device can accomplish, and Fun With GPS covers it all.

Some of the most famous Western movies have been set against the background of the Mexican Revolution of the early 20th century. Now, for the first time in English, Osprey offer a concise but fact-packed account of the events, armies, uniforms and weapons of those ten chaotic and bloody years, putting in context such famous but half-understood names as Diaz, Pancho Villa, Zapata, Madero and Huerta. The text is illustrated with many rare and fascinating period photographs, and with eight detailed color plates of orfiristas and Rurales, Maderisitas, Federales, Villistas, Zapatistas, and US volunteers and intervention troops.

Jowett and de Quesada bring the Mexican Revolution to life through their text. Stephen Walsh illustrated this Osprey Elite book. The Mexican Revolution was overshadowed by the Great War, even though the Revolution lasted longer. The authors note that the Mexican Revolution was really a series of conflicts between many different factions--including the United States government. Much of the Revolution would be classified as terrorism or war crimes today.

I learned quite a bit from this small book. The color plates surprised me--American Navy shore party personnel dyed their tropical whites? Makes sense, but I'd have hated to be aboard teh battleship Florida when the crew had to replace their white uniforms! The role of the machine gun in Mexico surprised me, given the chronic ammunition shortages--though the artillery poverty was expected. Money is required, cash in advance, before those "merchants of death" will transfer their wares.

The book contains a comprehensive chronology of the Revolution, plus descriptions of the major combatants. The color plates show representatives of the biggest factions, rounded out by period photographs. Unlike most Osprey books, there is no bibliography to cross-reference. I miss that.

Mexico's Revolution was regarded with fear in Washington at the time. There was suspicion of Imperial German instigation--much like the current War on Terror, the evidence was flimsy or provably false, but there was some German interest in exploiting unrest in Mexico. I think that the Mexican Revolution is still simmering, that it was never concluded. But what do I know?

              Book Description

From one of our shrewdest economic trend-spotters, a wake-up call that prosperity is about to shift from the West to the East, and what we can do before it's too late

By the beginning of this century it was already commonplace to speak of the U.S. as a "hyperpower," to talk of its military, political, and economic clout as unprecedented in world history, and to assume that American dominance would continue at least throughout our lifetimes. It is conventional wisdom that America will have no serious rivals for at least a generation. But the American position is far more fragile and ephemeral than much of the world believes.

Clyde Prestowitz shows the powerful yet barely visible trends that are threatening to end the six-hundred-year run of Western domination of the world. The trends include America's increasingly unsustainable trade deficits; the equally unsustainable (and dangerous) buildup of massive dollar reserves in places like Japan and China; the end of America's position as the world's premier center for invention and technological innovation; the sudden entrance of 2.5 billion people in India and China into the world's skilled job market; the role of the World Wide Web in permitting many formerly localized jobs to be done anywhere in the world; and the demographic meltdown of Europe, Japan, Russia, and, in later decades, even China. Three Billion New Capitalists is a clear-eyed and profoundly unsettling look at America's and the world's economic future, from an author with a history of predicting the important trends long before they become apparent to others.

5 out of 5 stars Scary but Excellent Must Read.......2007-05-28

No need to write anything extensive as the prior reviewers have done a great job. I have found this book to be the most profound analysis of what is happening around the world to date. This book really sums things up and paints a grim picture of things to come in the USA. This book is miles above Thomas Friedmans breezy light cheerleading extolling the benefits of a flat world. This book is truly a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read on globalisation, economics and politics.......2007-02-03

Clyde has done a great job trying to explain how globalization, economics and politics is changing the way we live today. Even though he is from the conservative Reagan administration, he has unbiased opinions about the current economic situations around the globe.

He not only talks about China as a globalization power, but also talks about the shortcomings of the United States as the current economic super power.

This book is better that Tom Friedman's "The World is Flat"

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed....and sobering if even only half true.......2006-10-28

I believe this accounts listed in the book are true, and so my title wasn't written to indicate that I don't believe the book...but rather to indicate how serious our situation could be.

I say could be because I think the countries of China and India still need us in a big way...because we are the #1 consumers. But as we lose that benchmark and sink to 2nd or even third behind Europe and Asia, they will no longer have an interest in supporting our unbridaled spending. (lets face it, we spend more money than we actually have....not everyone, but as a whole as a country!)

This book outlines all the numbers, and reasons for the current situation. I actually feel it is somewhat positive in it's progonosis for the future. There are other books that have us jumping right off the cliff....but the outlooks given here are not all rosy, but don't all end with a 100 foot plunge to our end.

Very good book...I recommend it highly!

2 out of 5 stars Haven't We Been Down This Road Before?.......2006-08-14

Interesting to see a book like this come from Prestowitz, former Undersecretary in the Reagan Administration. Back then it was America losing its good jobs and future to the Japanese. Remember them? Japan, Inc....central planning...national industrial policy...would soon be running the world. American debt, loss of technological edge, outsourcing would all mean the USA would be reduced to second-world status by 2006.

It was precisely because Prestowitz's Commerce Department let the 'hidden hand' of the market prevail that we wound up with the economic boom of the 90s.

So it is very strange to see Prestowitz ring the same alarm bells he firmly rejected a generation ago. Seems every economic book I read these days remeinds me of the early 80s....alarmist. That is not to deny the issues he raises in this book, but to paint a grim and destitute future for the American economy is tired and not well thought out.

That, in the end, is why this book only gets two stars. Intellectually it's bereft. Nothing new here.

5 out of 5 stars another one about globalization like the analysis of thomas friedman.......2006-06-26

I liked this book. Obviously, with the Cold War over, America now needs to compete globally with India and China, among others. This book talks about the ways that companies can do so and the challenges facing us. This book is quite similar to Thomas Friedman's book The World Is Flat, in places. The apologists for globalization say one thing-- the opponents of multinational corporations' exploitation of workers say another thing-- but the fact remains that worldwide capitalism is changing, and each of us needs to change to remain employable. This book is a report on the inclusion of India and China's billions into capitalism.

                  Book Description

The Gendered Cyborg brings together material from a variety of disciplines that analyze the relationship between gender and technoscience, and the way that this relationship is represented through ideas, language and visual imagery. The book opens with key feminist articles from the history and philosophy of science. They look at the ways that modern scientific thinking has constructed oppositional dualities such as objectivity/subjectivity, human/machine, nature/science, and male/female, and how these have constrained who can engage in science/technology and how they have limited our ideas of the possibilities for both humanity and science.
Later sections contain readings that present key feminist theories about representation to examine how gender and technoscience are represented in areas of particular contemporary interest: the new human reproductive technologies, science fiction, film and the Internet. The readings constantly ask "Is this for women, for human beings?"

                      Book Description

Defending Illusions examines the science, philosophy, and law of ecosystem management. Allan Fitzsimmons clearly illustrates how efforts to make federal protection of ecosystems the centerpiece of national environmental policy rest on weak science and a worldview that places concern for the well-being of nature ahead of the well-being of people.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      4 out of 5 stars A voice of reason.......2000-02-29

If there is any cause we are willing to support without any reservation, it is the cause for environmental preservation. Who among us is against clean air, unpolluted streams, cute bears, and fluffy birds? It is self-evident that saving the Earth for future generations is our supreme duty. Along with democracy, nature is the closest substitute for God that we worship now. Given this sanctity of the environmental cause, "Defending Illusions" is an eye-opening book. It is shocking to learn how twisted, exploited, and perverted the cause of the environment is, of course with good intentions, by "green" enthusiasts and even professional ecologists. Dr. Fitzsimmons demonstrates how hollow buzzwords are such as ecosystem health or ecosystem integrity. Yet, the outcome of these illusions is quite tangible; it is embodied in thousands of government regulations epitomized by the term "ecosystem management." As a good writer, Dr. Fitzsimmons starts with tracing the spiritual history and emotional atmosphere that made possible those illusions. Then he turns to the simplest thing any ecosystem manager must know: where to manage. To restore ecosystem health or ecosystem integrity we need to know what an ecosystem is, where one ends and another starts. The problem is that nobody can answer this basic question. Unlike organisms, which always have specialized structures (bark, skin, etc.) that separate them abruptly from the environment, ecosystems do not have well-defined boundaries other than those produced by changes in the physical environment. Anyone is free to delineate an ecosystem at will. Surely, freedom in general is admirable, but the lack of identifiable boundaries turns ecosystem management into irreproducible science. In the section "Are Ecosystems Alive?" Dr. Fitzsimmons shows that even as a conceptual entity ecosystems do not fare well. After all, Tansley introduced this term to denote a combination of Clements's superorganism and the environment. It is curious that, although the concept of superorganism is largely discredited, the ecosystem, which is so to speak a superorganism on clay footing, is still around. The confusion between an ecosystem and an organism (or superorganism) is at the core of the heated struggle for ecosystem health and integrity. These notions are possible if we equate the ecosystem with the organism. But obviously these two things are quite different. In organisms, resources are distributed and members grow according to a genetically coded blueprint transmitted from generation to generation. No centralized control exists in ecosystems. Real systems, such as organisms, that constitute the ecosystem have different, often opposite agendas. The parts of an organism die or survive together. In contrast, many components of an ecosystem thrive at the expense of others. Each biotic part of an ecosystem, an organism, is much more complex than the ecosystem itself. The reverse is true for the organism. The theory of evolution, ecology, and much of biology are based on the fact that the organism is the unit of natural selection; ecosystems are not. If half of an ecosystem is converted into a parking lot, the remaining half may occasionally lose an animal species, but usually is able to continue its existence as before. In other words, ecosystems are divisible. Organisms are not. Organisms die predictably, but, barring a major volcanic eruption, it is all but impossible to kill an ecosystem. All of these reasons makes the discussion of ecosystem health and integrity meaningless. Dr. Fitzsimmons shows that the much publicized issue of ecosystem services is equally faulty. The chief flaw is the omission of the harmful side of these services. It seems obvious that, along with flows of materials and energy fueling our affluence, ecosystems "serve" us with diseases that kill or disable us, competitors that destroy the results of hard work by farmers and foresters, and calamities that devastate our homes and fields. It is true that biodiversity is the greatest treasure we possess; equally true, it is our greatest misfortune. Millions of people dying from dysentery, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and other infectious diseases pray to be saved from these ecosystem "services." All these issues are far from academic. They boil down to empowering the federal government to manage the land contrary not only to reason but to property rights as well. Dr. Fitzsimmons concludes his book by outlining a positive program of responsible environmental stewardship compatible with our liberty and freedom.
