"Fiscal sustainability analysis is the use of a simple set of tools to analyze a government's budget and its debt position, and leads to conclusions - given the government's debt level - about the appropriateness of fiscal policy. Many economists are familiar with fiscal sustainability analysis, but there is no single reference work that explains it. Fiscal Sustainability in Theory and Practice fills this gap. The handbook is organized around three themes: (i) basic theory and tools for everyday use, (ii) the effects of business cycles on public finance and the role of fiscal rules, and (iii) crises and their impact on fiscal sustainability. The first theme is central to the book's purpose of bringing the basic theoretical literature together, along with a set of examples used to illustrate particular methods of analysis. The second and third themes develop the topic of fiscal sustainability further, by extending it to topics at the forefront of policy debates in the recent past. Aimed at economists previously unfamiliar with fiscal sustainability analysis, this book will also serve as a useful reference work for all economists with either an advanced undergraduate or basic graduate level of training."

Book Description
In this seminal work, Greg McElligott traces neoconservative labour market policy from its international origins to the local offices of the Canadian state. In doing so he challenges the elite focus of most policy studies and shows how resistance and informal policy-making among frontline state workers can lay the foundations for a new, more democratic, state.
This study concerns one department of Canadian government - Employment and Immigration Canada (EIC) - and one policy field - labour market policy from 1976-1991. Professor McElligott unearths resistance in workplaces where "cutting edge" neoconservative managers were trying to reshape government services, and inserts frontline workers into state theories, policy debates and progressive political strategies. He argues that the neglect of these workers makes key state theories incomplete and separates policy-making theory - and practice - from actual state outputs. One consequence is that progressives have foregone many promising strategic opportunities.
McElligott concludes that indirect democracy and bureaucratic hierarchy are not inevitable and lays out a proposal for "Public Service Councils" and self-managed state workplaces. Rich in critical analysis and provocative in intent, Beyond Service challenges current trends in administrative theory and policy-making, and will be of great interest to academics, policy research bodies, union researchers, educators, and, most importantly, those very frontline government workers whose input is not recognized and whose potential this text will help to realize.

Customer Reviews:
Silliness at its best!.......2006-02-24
This has to be one of the best collections of so-called "regional" humor in print today. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but a friend pushed the book on me, and by the time I'd finished "Prom Date" I knew I had a keeper. Rosen knows the people she writes about, knows the good and the bad of them, and she shows you it doesn't matter if you're from small town Arkansas or the big city, what matters is, did the first girl you ever asked out kill herself to avoid going to the prom with you? Is your Dad just crazy when he says he's packing up the family every year to run from a demon...or is he really running from a demon? Are you sure you'd recognize a serial killer--and what if they're doing the community a service?
This wonderful collection had me laughing out loud, surprised me, and made me think. It even managed to creep me out, and the way Rosen can change directions guarantees she'll never be typecast, or bored.
Yes, Elvis does wander through a story--and he's perfect. "Extremely Odd Jobs" is my favorite of the group. Most of the stories in this collection can be read aloud to share the laughter. So, if you want a funny, biting AND compassionate look at Bubbas, here's your book.
Stupid.......2003-02-01
Selina Rosen is a very, very good writer. I have read her science fiction and had a hard time putting them down. But this book is extremely bad. It's not funny. Other reviewers have made mention of the Prom Story. I found no humor and thought it was stupid in the extreme. Hopefully, Selina Rosen will stick with her science fiction titles. She does a great job with those.
Bubba Lives!.......2001-05-17
This book is an excellent illustration of the need for small-press publications. Had Yard Dog Press not published this volume of short stories, the readers would've been robbed. From the first (and best) story, "Prom Date," to the last, Selina Rosen brings a quirky sensibility to her work. "Prom Date" alone is worth the price of admission. I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Rosen read the story to a SRO crowd and had everyone in stitches. Would you rather not take a date to a prom or take a dead prom date?
Good book!.......2000-12-01
I find my self a little low, I pick up this book and read a few pages of her stories. It only takes a few pages to be rolling on the floor. I recomend any thing writen by her. Hey if you like this you will love Queen of Denile....
Best fun I've had in writing---.......2000-10-21
I was lucky enough to be included in the BUBBA CHRONICLES because of a story Selina and I wrote one long weekend ("Extremely Odd Jobs"). I'm even luckier, because Selina Rosen is one of the most witty, talented and creative writers I've ever met---and working with her gave me a chance to stretch some writing muscles I hadn't used before. Read Selina's work and give yourself a treat. "Prom Date" still makes me laugh hard enough to make my ribs hurt (even after a half-dozen readings). If you aren't falling down laughing after reading this collection, I suspect you're dead.

The Address Directory of Celebrities in Entertainment, Sports, Business & Politics, Second Edition

Book Description
"The Celebrity Black Book" contains over 40,000 updated celebrity addresses of movie, television, music and sports stars, as well as politicians, authors, models, directors, world leaders, religious figures and more. Perfect for anyone who needs to contact a celebrity!
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book for an autograph collector.......2006-12-21
I purchased this book for my husband who collects autographs, mostly through the mail now that we don't live in LA. He loves it! He uses the book on a regular basis to write to sports figures, politicians and actors/actresses. So far we have had good luck with the addresses listed.
What a book!!.......2005-08-24
I must say I'm quite overwhelmed by all the people listed in this book. It's got almost everyone you know of and more! I'm very impressed. The only thing that I think is "wrong" with this book is that they haven't written the title of everyone, so on some people you don't know who they are, but it's not that many. I was very very surprised to find David Mark Chapman's address (prison) in there. Of course it didn't say what he is, although pretty much everyone knows anyway. It seems that some of the addresses are to people's homes. You've got addresses to musicians, politicians, journalists, actors, athletes, writers, Nobel prize winners, doctors, anyone you can think of in the whole world!! It's a treasure! On the website they've got about 10.000 more addresses (I wonder why they didn't put them all in the book??) This is really the ultimate Celebrity Address book I've ever seen. Buy it!
Addresses for ALMOST everyone.......2005-05-12
This book's front cover boasts "over 40,000 celebrity addresses, everyone who is anyone." That's not quite accurate. I've discovered a number of people who were omitted or just plain forgotten. That aside, the book does include addresses for most mainstream celebs, musicians and athletes and presents them in a straightforward, alphabetical listing.
But a word of caution: keep in mind that celebs change agents/managers often, which means their mailing addresses change often too. So this book's shelf life is limited.
What this book sorely lacks is additional information to accompany each listing. For example, has the address for Brad Pitt been tested to see if it is accurate? And, if it has, has anyone (the author?) had success in contacting Pitt that way? This is the stuff that matters if you're a novice (or even exprienced) autograph collector. An address will do you no good if the recipient doesn't read (or get) their fan mail.
Ultimately, though, the book only promises to give addresses, and that's what it does. These addresses have been culled from contactanycelebrity.com, which is
the book's companion Web site. When you buy the book, you can mail/fax in a registration form, giving you one month's free access to the Web site's vast database. That's a nice extra. All in all, the book is good, but a bit pricey for what it delivers given its limited shelf life.
The Few, the Proud, the Living Dead.......2005-05-09
If you are looking for movie stars, this might be a great book. I bought this book (the 2005 edition) primarily to locate artists (e.g., photographers, painters, sculptors). The book is basically useless in this regard. Proportionately speaking, there are extremely few listings of those types of artists. Ironically, even well-known, i.e., "celebrity" artists are omitted, as are lesser known but important ones. The few listed are seemingly random, including comic strip "artists." Worse, several of those listed are either very old (no longer working) or dead. I wonder if the addresses given are for cemeteries? Actually, the addresses for the few artists of interest to me were most often wrong based upon a simple cross reference search on the web. Of course, that also makes me question the accuracy of the other listings. This seems a useful resource for those interested in actors, random athletes and opera singers, but for any other interest--it simply needs to be updated.
Five Stars!.......2005-04-14
I've never had this much research material for so many celebrities until now. For anyone wondering out there, don't second guess buying it.
I also love how you get a free month of their online database which has even more stars, plus you can check to make sure the addresses are up-to-date.

Latino/a Popular Culture
ASIN: 082294085X |
Book Description
Can scholarly pursuit of soap operas and folk art actually reveal a national imagination? This innovative collection features studies of iconography in Mexico, telenovelas in Venezuela, drama in Chile, cinema in Brazil, comic strips and tango in Argentina, and ceramics in Peru. In examining these popular arts, the scholars gathered here ask the same broad questions: what precisely is a national culture at the level of the popular? The national idea in Latin America emerges from these pages as a problematic, divided one, worth sustained attention in the field of culture studies. Many different arts come forth in all their richness and vitality, compelling us to look, listen, and understand.

Book Description
When Lowell "Bud" Paxson, creator and cofounder of the Home Shopping Network, sold his interest in the billion-dollar-a-year business in 1991, he could have retired and enjoyed the fruits of his labor. His friends advised him to enjoy retirement, go to the beach, and relax.
"I took their advice," says Paxson. "It was a great day!"
Then, Paxson began work on his most ambitious project yet: launching PAX NET, the nation's seventh broadcast television network. In Threading the Needle, Paxson takes you behind-the-scenes and into the world of big business, big deals, and deep faith. In this moving personal story, Paxson, a natural-born storyteller, shares the sometimes hilarious and sometimes heart-wrenching struggles of trying to maintain balance in career, spiritual life, and family.
The title Threading the Needle refers to the biblical story of the rich man who approached Jesus and asked how he could acquire eternal life. Jesus responded, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Luke 18:25) In clear prose, Paxson describes how this passage helped influence the most important decisions in his business--and in his life. He writes, "As I reflected on the imagery of the needle, it occured to me that each of us has three threads, or elements, of life we need to get through the needle's eye: the business or career thread, the spiritual thread, and the family thread. Our responsibility is to cling to the grace of God while we seek to maintain the purpose and balance our lives need so we can thread the needle."
A strongly committed Christian, Paxson knows his national family entertainment network will succeed, despite conventional wisdom that says sex and violence are what sells on television. Known to the media, colleagues, and Wall Street as a visionary and a maverick, the six-foot-six Paxson is a larger-than-life entrepreneur who firmly believes that business and faith are intertwined.
In Threading the Needle, Paxson shares the business philosophy that got him where he is today--chairman of a huge television enterprise that is poised to grow even bigger. Part motivation and part business strategy, Threading the Needle contains a recipe for success that people can implement in their own businesses and spiritual lives.
Customer Reviews:
To Bud Paxson with Gart Templeton.......1999-01-11
Your Book is Living Proof that Character and Morality is Everything!
A primer on success in business, without forsaking God........1998-12-28
"Threading the needle" is a swift reading book, whose title refers to the Biblical passage (Luke 18:25)in which a wealthy young man questions Jesus on how to have eternal life. Jesus answers, "sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me", When the man heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him and said "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." As a founder of Home Shopping Network, Bud Paxson has enjoyed amazing financial success, but despite his riches, his life was devoid of the love and mercy that only can come from a relationship with Jesus Christ. Paxson's determination to have a strong relationship with God and business success, is a model for every business person, born-again, or not. As a Jewish believer in Christ, I intend to use "Threading the needle" as a guide to growing my own business success and will recommend it to all whom I do business with.
Bud Paxson is a great man........1998-10-05
I work for Mr. Paxson's PAX NET organization. Knowing him in person is truly an honor for me. Business success aside, Mr. Paxson is a true family man and a real down to earth person. PAX NET, now is PAX TV, receives overwhelming support from viewers all over America... PAX TV, a vision of Bud Paxson, as wonderfully told in "Threading The Needle".
Wow, This guy is a visionary!.......1998-09-16
Bud Paxson is responsible for shaping the way America buys things through television and from the looks of this book he'll change the type of programming we see too. His can do spirit is inspirationally portrayed in this book which is easily read, informative and fun to read. A must read for anyone interested in learning how the TV game is played.

This volume draws exclusively on primary documents to reveal the underlying conflicts and tensions that caused that small, agricultural settlement to explode with such dramatic force.
Customer Reviews:
A Salem Whodunnit.......2004-08-23
Why did the sober New England residents of Salem suddenly find witches in their midst? And why Salem and not, say, Williamsburg? Historians answer questions like these by going to the original documents, and that's exactly what you have here: the original documents, edited into modern English.
Along the way you'll discover conflicts between Salem and Salem Village, a congregation that wasn't allowed to have a church, personal conflicts and jealousy and revenge, and even a hint of a land grab.
But you have to figure out the answers for yourself. All the clues are in your hands. All you have to do is put them together and make sense of them. Later on, you can read Salem Possessed by the same authors and see what professional historians can tease from this data. That was a humbling experience, but I wouldn't have missed doing my own detective work for the world.

Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
This diary gives a vivid picture of life in a Yorkshire village between the Napoleonic Wars and the Victorian era. Robert Sharp, schoolmaster, village constable, shopkeeper, and tax collector, was in a unique position to observe the affairs of the village and the lives of his fellow-villagers, whom he describes with wry humour and affection, often quoting their conversations verbatim. He also took a keen interest in what was happening outside the village, both nationally and internationally, giving the reader a valuable insight into how these events were reflected at the local level and how they were viewed by contemporaries.

Book Description
This book describes a practical aproach to univariate and multivariate analysis of variance. It starts with a general non-mathematical account of the fundamental theories and this is followed by a discussion of a series of examples using real data sets from the authors' own work in clinical trials, psychology and industry. Included are discussions of factorial and nested designs, structures on the multiple dependent variables measured on each subject, repeated measures analyses, covariates, choice of text statistic and simultaneous test procedures.

Book Description
This book presents some of the most recent developments and classical methods in Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Repeated Measures, and Growth Curves. It attempts to deal with the problem of poor approximations by offering more exact methods for data analysis. Through examples such as following the change in consumer demand of a product over time and analyzing data from clinical trials, Exact Methods in MANOVA, Mixed Models, and Repeated Measures shows readers how these methods are more useful and more accurate in predicting results.
