This book does a good job of covering the most common pieces of test equipment....DMMs, function generators, signal generators, scopes, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, etc. It supports these instrument topics with the right level of theory and application information.

This is an excellent book for the hardcore Beach Boys fan. There is exstensive coverage of albums, highlights of important dates, photos, and inside info on sessions. I enjoyed it, and still do.

A work of unbelievable effort. I can only imagine the painstaking efforts it took to piece this marvelous historical monument together. The Beach Boys well deserve the attention this volume has given them. While most of the 60's and 70's supergroups have faded historically (Beatles, Who, and the Stones who should have quit over 20 years ago) the Beach Boys musical legacy has lived on. This book provides an excellent non-biased perception of the ups and downs that befell probably the most interesting musical group of all time, as well as profiling their most gifted and troubled leader, Brian Wilson. One cannot read the protions of this book dealing with late 1966 and early 1967 and hope that somehow the outcome of SMiLE is different. Not only does this book chronicle the Beach Boys careers, but also the relevant "goings-on" of the times. An enduring band and an enduring legacy now documented for all to learn from.

The Beach Boys' most in-depth book.......2006-01-03

Most casual fans prefer the "human" orientated bios, and that's fine - "Heroes and Villains" is probably the best straight Beach Boys biography available. Hardcore fans and musicians will froth at the mouth for this volume that goes into painstaking but never dull details of how such masterpieces as "Pet Sounds", "Good Vibrations" and all the great tunes by this most underappreciated band came to life.
Some details are not pleasant to learn - for instance, the band played very little on the albums from about "Shut Down Vol. 2" through the "Smile" sessions. Brian Wilson instead relied on a crack LA session team for the bulk of the instrumental work under his production while the rest of the band toured the country and the world. Of course, the vocals were and are the centerpiece of this band, so arguments about the backing musicians remains probably academic.
We also learn that Brian blames his partial deafness on an incident when he was three years old, claiming that his father, the notoriously abusive Murray Wilson, struck the young child in the ear with a 2 X 4, a charge the elder Wilson obviously denied.
"The Beach Boys" doesn't delve into the tragic details of Brian's childhood, concentrating instead on the music. The abuse is mentioned, however, as it most likely contributed to the mental breakdown in 1967 that prevented the release of "Smile". One can only ponder the impact this masterpiece would have had if it had been released back then as opposed to a few years ago. Still, we must be grateful "Smile" exists at all.
Rich in anectodes, studio details and great photos, "The Beach Boys" is a must-have for any self respecting fan.

The Brother years 5 stars, Early Beach Boys 3 stars.......2005-12-22

Its nice to see a book like this devoted to the Beach boys, they definitely needed one. That being said, this one can be topped, but its OK as the first stab anybody has taken into written a day by day story of the boys. Most of the research is taken from studio logs, but apparently not many could be found for the early (and best) Beach boys albums. While the book is some 350 pages, less that 1/4 is devoted to the years prior to 1966, and the rest of the book for the years 1966-1974. If you want a detail analysis of the early beach boys, you may need to look somewhere else. But for the Brother Years, this is very good. The book is not pricey and includes many photos. A revised edition would be great in a few years.

The unfolding of modernity in colonial and postcolonial societies has been little analyzed until now. In addressing transnational aspects of Middle Eastern societies, the contributors also challenge conventional assumptions about the region and its relation to the West. Try Martha Stewart's "Decorating with Color" Instead.......2006-06-30

While this book will give you a lot of great examples, it doesn't tell you exactly how to put the pieces together. If you want to learn how to do it, read Martha Stewart's "Decorating with Color" instead. Martha's book will actually teach you how to use the color wheel to select colors that will complement your home and each other, while this Trading Spaces book really just shows you some before/after photos from the shows.

Don't bother.........2004-03-21

As a fan of Trading Spaces this was the first book I saw out with the Trading Spaces name on it, so I bought it up but quick. Wow.. I cannot say how much I was disappointed. This book was a very VERY entry level book on color. I had no interest in much of the book, as the color schemes were too off the wall for me. A better book on color would be Home Decorating for Dummies or the Color Directory. One could go to an elementary art class and learn the information within this book. Total disappointment. I could have read it in the store and gotten the exact same information I took away with me. Avoid!

A great book for Trading Spaces fans.......2004-02-03

This book is great for those who wish they could stop, rewind, and replay the Trading Spaces room makeovers over and over again. There are several "after" pictures of each of the rooms featured along with directions on how to complete some of the projects in those rooms--including "how to make a lamp out of anything", making pillows, measuring for slipcovers, and numerous painting techniques from faux finishes to painting images on walls. An excellent book!

Color! is King of all home decorating books!.......2003-11-14

"Color!" rules, you know what I mean. You don't because you haven't bought it yet. What's wrong with you...buy it. You don't need me to tell you what's hot. You know it's going to be a good book. It's "Trading Spaces". Anybody who's anybody knows "Trading Spaces" are in. "Color!" really helps you to explore your inner wall painting desires. All my walls used to be white before I read "Color!" by Trading Spaces but now all are filled of SPONGE BOB themes because I am truly not afraid anymore to express myself through my walls. I can hold my head up high. I have read "Color!" and you should too if you really want to be free of those boring stark white walls.

This winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in history provides a solid and comprehensive account of the institional, economic, and political developments that occurred in the US during the middle and late 1800s that laid the foundation for America's contributions to science in the following century.

The book looks at the following developments. First, the book traces the growth of universities such as Columbia University that would become centers of research and education in the 20th century. Second, the book shows how the Civil War firmly established the federal government as a funding source for scientific research, both military and non-military related. Third, the progress of the Civil War demonstrated the importance of science and technology to the public at large, the small scientific community, and the government. Fourth, the industrialization that accompanied the Civil War in turn aided progress in scientific developments. Last, numerous companies and corporations attained sufficient capital funds during this time that allowed them to invest in scientific research in the following decades.

Overall, this book covers an oft-neglected part of American history. The problem is the writing style; extremely boring. This reviewer appreciated the subject, but found the writing style to be dry.

Writer-poet William L. Fox has spent much of his career contemplating the complex ways that landscape, human cognition, and history collide to create our perceptions and treatment of place. In PLAYA WORKS, Fox considers the West's emptiest spaces-the playas, or dry beds, of the ancient lakes that once filled much of the Great Basin. Among the flattest, most barren places on the planet, the West's playas have haunted the American imagination since the Frémont expedition first surveyed them in the early nineteenth century.

The human psyche, Fox maintains, is ill suited to contend with playas. Humankind evolved in the tree-and-grassland environment of the African savannahs, and our powers of visual cognition suffer acute dissonance in the featureless void of the playa. Consequently, our relationship to these spaces has been fraught with uneasiness and misunderstanding, sometimes resulting in death and destruction, sometimes inspiring remarkable art.

In the eight brilliant essays that comprise this book, Fox explores many of the major playas of the American West, examining locations as diverse as Nellis Air Force Base and Frenchman Flat, where the federal government has tested experimental aircraft and atomic weaponry; the Great Salt Lake Desert, where land-speed records have been broken; and the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada, site of the colorful Burning Man arts festival. Good but not great.......2005-05-30

I approached this book hoping for an analysis of the impact of emptiness and isolation on the human psyche. No doubt my expectations were influenced by my nationality -- Australian -- where our "playas" (which we call claypans or saltpans) are nearly all isolated and deserted, and the impact of human activity is minimal.

Fox provides graphic descriptions of the multiplicity of activities which take advantage of the US playas, ranging from military to counter-cultural festivals. He's clearly very well acquainted with his subject.

I found it generally depressing to read about the military use of playas. (Here in Oz, we had the Brits testing atomic devices at Woomera several decades ago.)

An interesting book, but too focused on American issues to satisfy my more general interests.
