Book Description
The Evolution of Agrarian Institutions studies the unexpectedly slow and uneven growth of private agriculture in postsocialist East-Central Europe. Comparing developments in Hungary and Bulgaria, Mieke Meurs offers an explanation for this slow growth and examines its implications for efficiency and income distribution in postsocialist agriculture.
With the collapse of the state socialist regimes in East-Central Europe, it was widely expected that collectivized agriculture would quickly be remade in the glowing image of China--a patchwork of small, privately run farms yielding rapid increases in output and incomes. However, the European experience has been quite different; while socialist collective farms have disappeared, collective forms of organization have persisted, and private farming has been slow to emerge. Meurs argues that an understanding of the causes of the slow emergence of private farming is essential to effective policy intervention in agriculture. This book contributes to such an understanding through analyzing variations in farm organization and rural market development and comparing agricultural restructuring in Hungary and Bulgaria.
The Evolution of Agrarian Institutions is unique in its combination of original survey data, published data on land use, and published historical data. It also tests two institutionalist explanations for the pace and direction of change in agricultural organization. This book will be of interest to economists, political scientists, sociologists, scholars working in the area of rural development in emerging countries, and anyone with an interest in transitional economics.
Mieke Meurs is Associate Professor of Economics, American University.

Healthy Teeth For Kids.......2001-10-12
As a parent of a 7 year old I found this book very helpful. This book is chuck full of practical information that is a must for anyone who has a child or children in their life. It's an easy read and held my attention. I strongly urge anyone who wants their kids to have good dental care to read and re-read this book. I'm glad I did!
Required Reading for Parents & Providers: Healthy Teeth Now.......2001-07-18
I have followed the writings of Beverly and Jerome Mittelman for 4 years, and was eager to read this book; I was not disappointed. The book is an invaluable how-to/reference manual for expectant parents, parents with children of any age, and should be distributed by pediatricians, dentists, obstetricians, and midwives to their patients to insure healthy teeth among all members of the family. The focus is truly holistic and begins with prevention. The Mittelmans and co-author Jean Barilla's progressive focus is upon nutrition with an emphasis on whole foods, whole grains, natural sweets derived from fruits along with supplementation from key vitamins. The contents succeeds in getting the reader to broaden the traditional view of sugar away from just chocolate bars to all sugars - refined and unrefined, processed and natural - and to manage and minmize total sugar intake. Another key emphasis is upon proper hygiene and attitude toward dental care i.e. dental care from a dentist and hygienist should emphasis healthy teeth rather than being an after-the-fact resource for identifying cavities and filling teeth. This book also provides the answers to the troublesome questions that health care consumers have concerning fluoride (does it prevent tooth decay), sealants (are they safe and/or necessary), mercury (are there alternatives and does mercury affect the immune system), and so on. Finally, this reader was struck by the authors' view of the teeth as being one component of our entire body, and that dental care should not take place in a vacuum. Healthy teeth are related to a healthy immune system, and overall good health. The authors will take the reader light years beyond what we have been taught is basic dental hygiene and light years beyond one's definition of dental well-being. READ THIS ONE AND THEN BUY IT FOR A FRIEND.

Grab One If You Find One!!.......2002-09-08
This is definitely one of the best of the punk books. Written in 1983, the photos are wonderful, the text informative - this was clearly done by people who were part of the scene back then, who knew and understood what was going on.
Excellent Book.......2002-02-01
Yeah, I agree with the guy below. What do you want, a textbook? This was written AT THE TIME and has been in my collection since 83. If you are lucky enough to find a copy somewhere, GRAB IT!
I mean, why go through all the revisionist history that is pumped out nowadays when you can read an actual document from the place and time?
lots of bands you may never have heard of.......2001-07-11
the book hasn't been updated since 1983 -- for the reason that it's written by and about a past scene. the lack of objectivity makes it a worthwhile read. what do you want, a punk rock textbook? buy this -- it's hard to find.
Great if you want an overview of CA punk.......2001-07-11
From the perspective of a researcher I could maybe see how this book could be disagreeable, but for those interested in an overview of the bands & the scenes it's fine. The book doesn't get philosophically deep about any one band in particular or CA punk in general, but it does outline a lotta info for those who aren't already familiar (more LA than SF)....It's pretty linear and conversational. The pictures are teriffic. Too bad there's no index, though.
This book is bad on many levels.......2001-06-13
First it is obvious why it is out of print--it hasn't been updated since 1983. I bought it at amazon (used) and really regret it. I am reseaching punk music and wanted a good view of the LA and SF scenes. This book has way too many pictures (a few great pictures--most are dull) and the text is written in a journalistic style that seems too close to the subject. Hardcore includes the quality bands on the scene but also focus on bands that have no influence on music and even fans of punk music has never heard of. Don't be tempted to get this--I am saving you from this hell!

Customer Reviews:
"We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You".......2004-07-17
Not as completely entertaining as Ellerbee's prior book "And So it Goes," which focused on her career in broadcast journalism, this follow-up is a collection of unrelated tales from her life - each opening a window onto a different phase of it. I prefered Ellerbee's first (and funnier) book, but two tales from this volume are brilliant enough to give it a ratings bump.
Ellerbee's story of overcoming alcoholism at the Betty Ford Center is as real and honest as memoirs get. Entering the program with a witty cynicism (masking fragile fear), Ellerbee eventually surrenders to the therapeutic environment and is ultimately softened by it. It's just the kind of story you'd expect from an intelligent satirist who (at first) feels she's above the 12-stepping and soul searching, but finally recognizes it as the only way to heal and become whole.
My favorite chapter, though, is the smart and funny tale of young Linda's first summer job, "We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You." Linda spends her summer working at a resort owned by a friend of her father. After several weeks of mingling with the other young workers - one of whom is a radical looking to unionize - Linda learns valuable life lessons and eventually "sticks it to the man," her boss. In the end, the tale (and the title) becomes a metaphor for prejudice and stereotyping. This story alone is worth the cost of the book. Buy "Move On," read this chapter, then make photocopies of the chapter for your friends... it's the kind of thing you'll want to share.
Stunningly Beautiful.......2002-06-07
This is nothing less than a work of genius, a beautiful story which is beautifully told. The thrilling exploits of this legendary giant of journalism are sure to enthrall everyone who reads about them. No other person, living or dead, could possibly have a more interesting story to tell, or be able to tell it in a more interesting way. Ms. Ellerbee is simply amazing, and her great talent continues to manifest itself on her wonderful news program which airs on Nickelodeon once per week, but which should be shown at least twice each day. Forget about Murrow, Cronkite, and all the rest - Ellerbee is the greatest!
Honest, moving, revealing........2000-04-06
Linda Ellerbee goes on and shows us more of her life. We learn of her friends, her life, and how these shaped her into the woman we've enjoyed for years on Overnight and telling us the real story where others just tell us what they want us to know.

Customer Reviews:
Great for WI-FI Newbie's ! .......2006-07-22
Great for WI-FI Newbie's ! & WI-FI Users alike !
Not great, but OK for some........2005-03-21
The target reader seems to be a Win-XP user with a D-Link DI-624, who does not really want to learn much. If that is you, then this book may be fine for you. If you only want to run the wizards & menus & little else, great. I happen to use Win-XP on some machines, and have a D-Link DI-624 on one. But I actually was hoping to learn more, and this book disappointed me. I'm taking it back to Barnes & Noble.
The authors use acronyms(initials) but usually make you go to the index to find out what the initials stand for. Seldom is there an explanation of what it really means. Sometimes the acronyms/initials are not defined, and at least once, the initials were defined two ways at two points in the book (see MAC as medium access control on page 90 and media access control on page 123 & the index).
What I really disliked is the total omission of Linux, a bunch of the technologies & components involved in wireless, and a good explanation of the basics. This book omits way to much for me. The authors apparantly think readers do not need to understand wireless technology basics. I'm not looking for wireless network certification or employment, just good basic understanding and this book doesn't have it. It does have some good material for the newbie, and is not overly verbose, so 3 stars.
Good Advice and Hands-On Guidance from PC Magazine.......2004-12-03
This 414 page guide is a great resource for readers who are ready to create their first wireless network, or extend their current wired network with wireless features. If you already have a wireless network, you will still find a great collection of solutions for adding whole-house audio and video to your wireless network, security enhancements, and even a step by step guide for building your own neighborhood "hotspot."
Like the Neil Randall's previous book, PC Magazine Windows XP Solutuions, this one is packed with practical, hands-on guidance, written in an easy to understand and follow style. The Author never talks over your head, but doesn't insult your intelligence either. The book is rich with photos, computer screen captures, and diagrams, and the Authors have made generous use of sidebars and notes.
Chapter 8 Security Tips and Tricks had some enhancements that I was not already using (including a cool honeypot solution), and I thought that Chapter 14 Setting Up an Entertainment Network had a lot to offer.
The book also has some chapters in its last part on wireless solutions for mobile, and office which build and expand on information in the previous chapters. However, these are a bit thin, and probably things most network admins already know.
The real value in this book is its great guidance for building, extending and expanding a home network with wireless technologies. But, it is still appropriate for those of us who have a wireless network and are looking to enhance security, add new features, and troubleshoot problems.
Recommended.

still argued over.......2007-09-09
Was the fall of Rome inevitable? The debate probably began when Rome fell. As Chambers puts it, the causes are still being argued today. Well, he edited this book in 1963. But that is surely still "today" compared to the events we are considering.
Chambers gathered here a set of resoundingly written essays, speculating on Rome. The most famous author is Edward Gibbon. And the book fittingly starts with an excerpt from one of his volumes on Rome. Another author is Boak, who suggested that a manpower shortage was the key reason. While Ellsworth Huntington proposed that climate change and an agricultural exhaustion was the determinant. In 2007, with all the to-do about global warming, Huntington's essay takes on an uneasily germane aspect.
Book Description
During the early modern period, western Europe was transformed by the proliferation of new worlds--geographic worlds found in the voyages of discovery and conceptual and celestial worlds opened by natural philosophy, or science. The response to incredible overseas encounters and to the profound technological, religious, economic, and intellectual changes occurring in Europe was one of nearly overwhelming wonder, expressed in a rich variety of texts. In the need to manage this wonder, to harness this imaginative overabundance, Mary Baine Campbell finds both the sensational beauty of early scientific works and the beginnings of the divergence of the sciences--particularly geography, astronomy, and anthropology--from the writing of fiction.
Campbell's learned and brilliantly perceptive new book analyzes a cross section of texts in which worlds were made and unmade; these texts include cosmographies, colonial reports, works of natural philosophy and natural history, fantastic voyages, exotic fictions, and confessions. Among the authors she discusses are André Thevet, Thomas Hariot, Francis Bacon, Galileo, Margaret Cavendish, and Aphra Behn. Campbell's emphasis is on developments in England and France, but she considers works in languages other than English or French which were well known in the polyglot book culture of the time.
With over thirty well-chosen illustrations, Wonder and Science enhances our understanding of the culture of early modern Europe, the history of science, and the development of literary forms, including the novel and ethnography.

Scholarly, informative, fascinating historical treatise........2000-02-04
Western Europe was transformed by new geographic worlds opened up by voyages, and new scientific worlds opened by science. Wonder & Science analyzes colonial reports, works of natural history and travel, and popular writings to gather details on how concepts and worlds were challenged and remade. Chapters cover some great authors and thinkers in England and France: individuals who made their marks on a changed world.
