I purchased this book for my niece when she was graduating from college. She found it very useful. I am also now in the market for a new job and borrowed the book from her and have enjoyed it so much that I am purchasing my own copy. There is a lot of good recommendations on how to keep your resume short and concise. It also provides different examples for a variety of positions. The one drawback I had was that it didn't make reference to including email addresses and web sites.

    Book Description

This is a book about how voluntary organizations cope with the relentless demands of change - the 'contract culture', service delivery, the 'professionalization' of the voluntary sector, the 'new managerialism'. It focuses on the needs of voluntary organizations as they confront the absorption of their provision into mainstream care services; the need to adopt business methods in their internal organization and external relationships; and the development of policies and procedures to ensure the provision of quality services. Nigel Gann provides many examples of good working practice, as well as an exploration of the key issues involved in 'quality' management.

Managing Change in Voluntary Organizations examines:

    * What must be the characteristics of management within the modern service culture

    * How voluntary organizations can protect the ethics of 'voluntariness', while competing with the private and public sectors in the market-place

    * What policies and procedures a voluntary organization can adopt in order to ensure a quality service to its clients

    * What a voluntary organization must do in order to survive and prosper in the twenty-first century

Trustees, paid workers and volunteers will find the book of practical value, while the national and long-term implications of change in the voluntary sector will be of concern to local authorities, students of social policy and organizational behaviour, and others concerned with the privatization of care services.

      Book Description

Many assume incorrectly that confrontations between baseball's players and management began in the 1960s when the Major League Baseball Players Association started showing signs of becoming a union to be reckoned with. (The tensions of the 1960s prompted the owners to form the Player Relations Committee to deal with them and in February 1968, the two groups negotiated the games first Basic Agreement.) The struggles between players and management to gain the upper hand did not, however, start there-the two groups have had numerous clashes since baseball began (as well as since the 1968 agreement). There have been various periods of conflict and peace throughout the century and before. This work traces the history of the relationship between players and management from baseball's early years to the new challenges and developing tensions that led to spring training lockouts instigated by the owners and to player strikes in 1972, 1981, 1985, and 1994. An important agreement in 1996 brought labor peace once again. The future of player-management relations is also covered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent opportunity to see a great collection.......2007-07-19

John Entwistle, always the consumate collector and influential bassist of the Who, maintained one of the most enviable bass and guitar collections of all time. This book gives everyone a chance to share in it. Clear, interesting photographs and John's own unique perspective on each instrument make it a nice addition to any music enthusiast's library.

5 out of 5 stars Bass and Guitar lovers, get ready to drool!.......2007-05-15

I thought this book was going to be mostly John's bass collection, but it's actually his entire "guitar" collection. It has just as many classic and rare guitars as it does basses. All of the photos are clear and detailed and they separate the guitars by brand name. Even if you are not a fan of The Who or The Ox himself, I would still recommend this book, as it is a walk through an amazing museum of classic guitars and basses!

5 out of 5 stars Bass Culture: The John Entwistle Bass Collection.......2005-09-07

If you are a fan of guitars in general... this is a must have. John Entwistle had a wonderful collection of guitars and basses, acoustic and electric, and the variety within the collection was amazing. Reading his personal anecdotes about each instrument was quite entertaining as well as educational.
I only wish that it had included his Status Graphite Buzzard bases, which were his personal instrument of choice his last couple of years of playing.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live The Ox!.......2005-07-31

This is a wonderful buy for bass fans, and Who fans alike! A rare glimpse into one of the most comprehensive private guitar collections ever! John's explanations of the guitars, and their history is worth it alone! The photography is wonderful. I'm so happy this was documented before John passed. Long live The Ox!

5 out of 5 stars The Ox Lives On.......2005-05-13

As Chairman of the Advisory Board to The John Entwistle Foundation (www.johnentwistle.org) I am proud to have this incredible book in my library. John's humor is shown vivdly throughout this book and his guitar collection was the envy of all musicians. In his life, John was a giver - check out the Foundation where our mission is to bring music education to underprivileged children. We will continue to give in John's name!

1 out of 5 stars Beginners would do well to avoid it..........2004-10-03

Othello, devised by Hasegawa-san in the 1970s, is an improved version of the century-old English game, Reversi. [What is called Reversi on-line is almost always Othello rather than Reversi].

This book was written soon after Othello was devised, before anyone understood much about the game. Unfortunately it shows, and beginners would do well to avoid it - at least as a source of ideas on strategy and tactics - because it will lead them down a deceptively appealing blind alley.

Because of its many diagrams, however, it is may be of use to those who know enough to recognise where it goes wrong but otherwise I recommend it for historical interest only.

Better resources can be found free on the Web, in the form of strategy guides, illustrative applets and programs that can beat even the best humans. A printed alternative is Othello: Brief & Basic by Ted Landau, which is old but still excellent (as far as it goes).

2 out of 5 stars Goro Hasegawa was the Japanese re-discoverer of Othello.......1999-01-15

Goro Hasegawa was the Japanese rediscoverer of Othello. Originally, the game was known as Reversi. Two rival Englishmen each claimed to have invented the game late 19th century. Hasegawa modified the rules slightly and his father, a Shakespearean scholar game it the name Othello, because the reversals in the game reminded him of the plot of the play. This book is the only widely distributed manual of Othello strategy. Although it may have some value for the collector, unfortunately most Othello players regard the strategies discussed in the book as being obsolete and even misleading. Readers who are interested in the game should look for resources on the Internet.

If you want an advertsing pamphlet telling the good things that can be done with MS Publisher, you'll like this. If you want guidance on how to use the program, look elsewhere. For the same money, you could probably get more useful info from the various MS Office books that devote 30-40 pages to publisher

                    Book Description

Before movies, radio, and television challenged the hegemony of the printed word, the Saturday Evening Post was the preeminent vehicle of mass culture in the United States. And to the extent that a mass medium can be the expression of a single individual, this magazine, with a peak circulation of almost three million copies a week, was the expression of its editor, George Horace Lorimer. Cohn shows how Lorimer made the Post into a uniquely powerful magazine that both celebrated and helped form the values of the time.

                        Amazon.com

The New York Times 2000 Almanac is a dazzling achievement, with a thousand pages of densely packed information that cover the U.S., the world, the economy, health, sports, science, and technology with depth and perspective, while its "Almanac of the Year" chapter includes a "Chronology of the Year's Events," "Obituaries from 1998-1999," "Novel Prizes," "The Millennium," and "Major News Stories of 1999." And the almanac provides 16 color pages of maps, covering time zones and a current depiction of the world's nations, provinces, and states.

The index alone is 29 pages long. A glance at the P's illustrates the extraordinary scope of this almanac. A small sample includes Pittsburgh, Pa. (with population statistics, climate, crime, government, rents, and Web sites), Planets (glossary, characteristics, visibility, and 1998 to 1999 discoveries), Plate tectonics theory, Pledge of Allegiance, and Poetry (with Pulitzer Prize, Bollingen Prize, and National Book Awards), as well as Poland (with area codes, economy, geography, government, etc.), Polar regions, Political action committees, and James K. Polk. There are 65 entries under Population, plus entries for Poverty, Presidential elections and administrations, Prisons, Professional sports, Public schools, Purchasing power of the dollar, and Purim.

In topic range and quality of reporting, the Times Almanac outshines its competitors. It likewise surpasses them in usefulness and sheer quantity of detail. Though the print is small and the pages are thin, the Times 2000 Almanac will no doubt become the reference standard for researchers and writers, students and professionals who require easy access to abundant and accurate information. --Stephanie Gold

I use both THE NEW YORK TIMES ALMANAC and THE WORLD ALMANAC as references. The strengths of the former are its articles on world energy, the global economy and the global military situation. As a big fan of the movies, I find its lack of biographical data on celebrities and actors to be an annoying weakness.

3 out of 5 stars Big mistake on page 275.......2001-11-25

When they are discussing the 2000 US population they mention the states with the largest hispanic population. They get the population columns mixed up. They claim California has a hispanic population of 33,871,648 and a total population of 10,966,648. That's impossible! They make the same mistake with other states they cover in that "article".

I'm a bit of an almanac afficionado, and the NYT Almanac -- in its organization, content and style -- beats the rest, hands down. More relevant facts, a logical layout, and even a readable typeface make this book an almanac lover's dream.

                        NOTE:
This review is related only to year 2001 edition of the Almanac, not 2002 edition. I was pleased to find completely rewritten and generally fair section regarding World War II in the 2002 edition.(Note added on 03/06/2002.)
                        ---------------------------------------------------------------

I was looking through the Almanac today in a bookstore, and two things disappointed me a lot in its Most Important Historic Events Of The Second Millennium section.

For one thing, the only event mentioned for the year 1941 was bombing of Pearl Harbor. And what about undeclared war against Soviet Union, which Germany started on June 22, 1941? Soviet Union lost over 20 millions of people in the war. I guess publishers of the almanac do not view an event as important, if there is no corresponding Hollywood fairy tail?

Secondly, for the year 1945 almanac proudly states: "British and American troops liberated death camps in Dahau and elsewhere". And not even a word about crucial role that Soviet Union played in liberating Germany from Nazi.

Can you think of something more shameful, than stealing victory from millions and millions of people, who paid their lives for it?

I enjoy these types of almanacs a great deal but I was disappointed with the New York Times' offering. It uses information that doesn't seem as current as information in the "World Almanac" for instance. I also found it a bit disorganized.

Building on collaborative work between SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute and the Lawrence Hall of Science, Messages from Space takes advantage of our fascination with extraterrestrial to catalyze study of the solar system and beyond. The activities create an exciting context for students to engage in creative learning, gaining a great deal of astronomical knowledge.

The unit begins when students attempt to decode a fictitious message from outer space. Imagining that they are SEIT scientists, students begin to analyze, where, in the solar system and beyond, there may be conditions favorable for life. They investigate how our solar system and other planetary systems may have formed, and consider how what we know about the solar system and other planetary systems fits into a bigger picture of the universe. Throughout, students consider whether life could exist "out there" and, if so, how we might communicate with those life forms. Students also gain valuable experience distinguishing science fact from sensationalized fiction.

As a 5th Grade teacher, I look forward to exposing my students to this portion of the science curriculum. Very untext-book-like, but full of oohs and ahs, especially the Carl Sagan quotes, the hands-on activities, and the imaginative stories the children will write.
