Ideal both as a college textbook and for self-study, the friendly style, clear illustrations and construction details included in the book encourage rapid and effective learning of analog and digital circuit design theory. All the major topics for a typical one semester course are covered including RC circuits, diodes, transistors, op-amps, oscillators, TTL logic, counters, D/A converters and more. There are also chapters explaining how to use the equipment needed for the examples (oscilloscope, multimeter and breadboard) together with pin-out diagrams and manufacturers' specifications for all the key components referred to in the book.

Impractical for the hobbyist.......2006-11-04
This book is well thought out, organized, and thorough. It provides excellent hands-on exercises that help you to really understand in a functional way how electronics work. The mathematical explanations and exercises may be challenging to folks who haven't used their college calculus/algebra/trig skills in a while (me included) - though they will serve those seeking to understand the underlying fundamental calculations.
With all those positives, why a 3 star rating? Well, the book assumes that you have ready access to a ~$1,000 oscilloscope and a ~$500 proto-typing bread board. On top of that, you need all of the bits and pieces to actually do the experiments - those are relatively cheap, but not always readily available (at a local store). All of the required equipment and supplies can be obtained on-line, but it will take a concerted effort, a chunk of cash, and some lead time to get all of this stuff. There are alternatives to the expensive oscilloscope and proto-board, but this path requires some assumed additional knowledge and may prove challenging as it deviates from the proscribed curriculum.
My final thought on this book is that it is quite excellent in a classroom / lab setting, but is not very "practical" for the hobbyist.

Book Description
Against all odds, the miners of Bienfait, Saskatchewan attempted, in 1931, to change their miserable situation by organizing a union. Stephen Endicott focuses on the miners' tumultuous thirty-day strike to explore the social consequences of capitalist restructuring during the Great Depression. The miners' bid to gain union recognition with the aid of the Workers' Unity League of Canada failed, and Endicott's in?depth examination of the key factors and players attempts to explain why it did so, and why a similar union drive a decade later eventually succeeded.
Based on a large number of both oral and written primary resources, Bienfait offers a new interpretation of the role of the corporations, the government, the courts and the police and in the process demonstrates how a militant union leadership helped the workers gain the strength and unity of purpose to challenge the powers of wealth and deep-seated prejudice. Endicott opens a new chapter in the history of Canadian labour relations which reveals much about Canadians and Canadian society during the Depression.

A fine collection of early music ranging from Gregorian chants and medieval dances to late-Renaissance compositions.
Customer Reviews:
None of the music is common time.......2003-11-08
For a beginner this is not the way to go. Most of the music is supposed to be like chants that are not common time and don't keep a beat, all ad-lib. If you're looking for a tempo'd music, go for the book with the hand drums and dances.

Customer Reviews:
The perfect introduction I have been looking for........2003-10-27
This is absolutely the perfect book for someone wanting to learn (or learn about) ballet. I have seen the other ballet books out there. Most of them are either too simplistic (showing pictures of various pretty moves without telling you how to do them) or too abstract. This book strikes the ideal balance. It is practical and thorough. It doesn't assume any prior experience in ballet, but goes from square 1 to a quite advanced level. It takes you through the same logical sequence of moves that all dancers learn. It offers tons of tips and inside information that only ballet dancers know. It's very well written and easy to read. The expert authors are knowledgeable, patient, and VERY FUNNY. (A laugh on every page -- I didn't expect that added bonus.). And it has what seems like about a million beautiful photographs illustrating each move in great detail. I can't say enough great things about this book. It's the book I've been waiting for. Buy it!

Customer Reviews:
An okay reference.......2007-01-16
This book did not include the detail that I would have liked. The newer information was fairly detailed.
VERY DISAPPOINTED! .......2005-11-20
Pros: Instead of having numerous stradegy guides (as Prima has released one for each individual DAOC update)...this Epic book will allow you to have it all in one spot.
Book contains many MANY charts filled with plenty of infomation to keep number crunchers happy.
Book also contains lots of lists and explinations of Epics and Chamption Quests and Trials and what you get from them. Also mentions in detail about Artifacts.
Cons: The book is really not complete. Off the top of my head... I see nothing mentioned about kill tasks or trophy hunting. Prima got chart happy, but they forgot about a few charts that would have been incredibly useful. So I'm still stuck jumping back and forth between the game and some web sites out there that DO have such charts. Oh well.
If your a beginner, this book doesn't give you a lot of nity grity BASICS. Like....ooooh, I dunno...how to use the quick bars and how to change your chat menus and what all of the buttons do on your in-game windows. This may sound nity-picky, but if a beginner buys this book expecting it to tell them everything they need to know.... they will be soarly diappointed.
I've found errors. I'm somewhat new to DAoC, incomparion to those players that have been with the game for years.... and even I found errors in some of the character builds they put in here. They try to give you a general run down of how you should build your toon (how many points to train up into your specs), but reading some online message boards on the game would probably give you a more accurate starting point. Example at hand: i don't know anyone who would put less than 50 into the flex spec of a heretic. This book tells you to go with 25... and doesn't even give you an example build of someone who went with crush instead! (major DAoC players will be laughing right now...trust me.)
This book completely lacks a guide to crafting. It mentions what each race can choose as their craft...but thats about it.
Nothing really mentioned about housing.
Maps are kind of scattered about the book. Some are very vague and general pictures of areas.
Newspaper-type quality paper used.
No extra pages in back to write your own notes.
Slash command lists are useful.... but INCOMPLETE.
Really does not give you an overview of what each toon-types roll in the game or in a group is. Previous prima guides I have bought for RPG games have done a much better job.
QUESTION TO PRIMA: You just released 3-hole binder edition books for COH AND COV (city of heroes/villians)....this inables you to update the books easily by releasing addition pages to fit in the binder as opposed to creating entirely new books. For forever-updating online RPG games this has been your best idea yet. Absolutley great idea... BUT....why on earth wouldn't you do that for DAoC as well?!!?? DAoC is a content-heavy online RPG game, as well. Many of the above problems are things that were probably just overlooked or forgotten. They could have been fixed with re-released of pages or additional sections. But now, you cannot do that since this books is a bound edition.
Disappointed. Very disappointed.
DO NOT BUY THIS GUIDE !.......2005-11-18
What a mess this guide is! Text is muddy and on newsprint style paper. Where previous guides had Color Maps, all these are poor black & white copies. Maps of old regions are one-sixth page and totally useless. Old region maps are all mislabled! This guide is total junk. Find and buy the original guides if you must have guides. For sure, you will be sending this one back as soon as you get a look at it.

Book Description
Ireland's unique position as the only state in the European Union to have been colonised, coupled with the ambivalent experiences of Irish people within the British Empire, means that issues of `race' in Ireland are overlaid by complex social and historical forces.
This book is a unique analysis of the racialisation of Irish identities. The author examines key phases in the historical development of an Irish 'racial' consciousness, including 16th century colonisation and 19th century immigration to America and Great Britain. He then examines the legacy of this relationship, both in terms of the new migration into Ireland and relations with indigenous minorities -- travellers and Irish Jews.
Garner explores the problematic links between nationalist ideologies and racism. He assesses the economic, social and political factors framing the experience of minorities in contemporary Ireland, and places these in a broader European context.
Book Description
In this truly one-of-a-kind book, Ascher introduces the mathematical ideas of people in traditional, or "small-scale", cultures often omitted from discussion of mathematics. Topics such as "Numbers: Words and Symbols", "Tracing Graphs in the Sand", "The Logic of Kin Relations", "Chance and Strategy in Games and Puzzles", and "The Organization and Modeling of Space" are traced in various cultures including the Inuit, Navajo, and Iroquois of North America; the Inca of South America; the Malekula, Warlpiri, Maori, and Caroline Islanders of Oceania, and the Tshokwe, Bushoong, and Kpelle of Africa. As Ascher explores mathematical ideas involving numbers, logic, spatial configuration, and the organization of these into systems and structures, readers gain both a broader understanding and anappreciation for the idease of other peoples.
Customer Reviews:
An exploration of mathematics in traditional peoples.......2002-11-10
In the current atmosphere of political correctness and emphasis on multicultural attributes, it was inevitable that the mathematical air would be affected. However, any examination of obscure cultures presents an opportunity to lose perspective. It is very easy to examine a cultural attribute, explain it via abstract mathematics, and then call that an example of mathematical sophistication. For as all mathematics teachers know, the ability to do a particular application in no way means that the person knows the theory or can apply it in another context. The author makes an occasional and fairly deep penetration into this pitfall, but on the whole maintains a balanced outlook.
Ethnomathematics is given the definition, "study of the mathematical ideas of traditional peoples," and is a loose marriage of mathematics and anthropology. The primary cultures investigated are the Inuit, Navajo, and Iroquois of North America; the Incas, the Malejula, Warlpiri, Maori, and Caroline Islanders of the Pacific; and the Tshokwe, Bushoong, and Kpelle of Africa. Since the vast majority of potential readers have never heard of most of these cultures, reading the book has value as a simple exercise in horizon expanding. In all cases the level of mathematics is not deep, but some exposure to the particular concept is essential.
Chapter one describes how the Incas stored information by tying knots in cords (called quipu), and is more discourse than mathematics. The second chapter explains the Bushoong, Tshokwe, and Malekula traditions of drawing figures in sand, and uses graph theory to explain how it is possible to draw some of the figures without lifting the stick. The third one deals with the Warlpiri logic of kin relations, with group theory being the mathematical foundation. This is where the author falls the most, as can be seen from the following quote: "To me it is striking to find that a logical structure studied abstractly and extensively by Western mathematicians plays a central and significant role in the day-to-day life of some peoples." Given the ubiquity of modern mathematics, it would be more surprising if no explanation existed.
The fourth chapter deals with the games and puzzles of several of the cultures. Number five describes the perception of geometric shapes by several Native American tribes and how the Caroline Islanders use the heavens to navigate. Here again, it is more a listing of the thoughts than mathematical justification. Chapter Six gives many examples of symmetric patterns of decoration, all of which can be assigned group theoretic analogues.
If you are interested in the mathematical thought of these cultures, then this book is essential. However, given the current academic climate, this is no doubt the first in a string of books of this type. Which, when you think about it, is a good thing for us all.
Published in Journal of Recreational Mathematics, reprinted with permission.
An interesting look at fascinating, and foreign, ideas.......1998-10-16
This book has two goals: one is defining the field of ``ethnomathematics'', the second is legitimizing the field by giving examples of what it might cover. This is more anthropology than mathematics, but would still appeal to a fan of Martin Gardner.
Memorable topics: the Inuit view of space, a sort of ethnotopology; navigation among the Polynesian islanders (how *do* they steer those tiny boats across five hundred miles of open ocean and arrive at an island a half-mile across? --- this chapter is simply amazing!); deciphering the code of the quipu (the knotted strings that formed the accounting records of the Incan Empire).

The Photographs of Ansel Adams with the Writings of John Muir
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ansel Adams whose landmark early photographs of wild America, originally taken for the Works Progress Administration, fill the pages of this splendid volume. Adams' breathtaking images are accompanied by excerpts from the writings of Sierra Club founder John Muir, the renowned conservationist who devoted his life to celebrating and preserving the American wilderness.
Customer Reviews:
American Photography at its Best.......2007-06-15
Breathtaking photos. Especially in light of the rudimentary equipment available at the time they were taken. Proves that Ansel Adams is still unsurpassed in American photography. Captures the majesty and beauty of the vanishing American wilderness. Members of Congress should view this work before voting to open refuge or wild lands to drilling and logging.
Poor quality.......2007-05-03
Poor reproduction quality. Actually no quality. As educational book, to study composition or something like that, perhaps the book serves.
Not Worth Looking At.......2006-04-05
Poor reproduction quality. Actually no quality. Not approved by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust.
Adams wouldn't have approved.......2005-07-18
While some photos are reasonable, most are seriously flawed. Some are flat, some are excessively contrasty, others seem murky and indistinct. Some of the photos need cleaning to remove dust spots, etc. Even the title is wrong , as the book includes photos of dams and sheep. There are many other excellent books, which have been prepared from Adams prints and produced with much more care. Buy one of those.
Are we looking at the same book?.......2005-01-02
Many of Ansel Adams' exquisite photographs call out for large reproductions, and this book displays them in a decent size format. But what a waste. The reproductions are nearly all flat and murky, with little detail in the shadow. If I had read far enough down into the customer reviews, I would have been warned; but the reviews at the top of the stack were quite favorable. Which leads me to wonder: Are we looking at the same book? I advise readers to purchase Adams books published by Little, Brown, and Company (aka "Bulfinch"). Even at smaller sizes their books display much more detail and clarity than does this disappointing edition.

Combining the dramatic and meticulous work of printmaker Tom Killion--accented by quotes from John Muir--and the journal writings of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder, The High Sierra of California is a tribute to the bold, jagged peaks that have inspired generations of naturalists, artists, and writers.
For over thirty years, Tom Killion has been backpacking the High Sierra, making sketches of the region stretching from Yosemite south to Whitney and Kaweah Crest, which he calls "California's backbone." Using traditional Japanese and European woodcut techniques, Killion has created stunning visual images of the Sierra that focus on the backcountry above nine thousand feet, accessible only on foot.
Accompanying these riveting images are the journals of Gary Snyder, chronicling more than forty years of foot travels through the High Sierra backcountry. "Athens and Rome, good-bye!" writes Snyder, as he takes us deep into the mountains on his daily journeys around Yosemite and beyond.
Originally printed in a limited, handmade, letterpress edition, The High Sierra of California is now available in an affordable, full-color trade edition.

This book is stunning the woodblock prints are so beautiful they almost make you cry. We spend a lot of time in the sierras and this book shows the beauty of these mountains better than any photographs. Get the book

howl at the moon.......2002-06-17
hop up and down in your Teva sandals. Wade the great streams as they roar over round stones down from ancient peaks... dance the silver dance of the wild rainbow... but find a place in your ultralight backpack for this book. It deserves a place next to that bag of peanuts, your titanium cup; worth its weight in gold dust from the river, split pea soup from the pouch. Ancient shaman tales and woodcut journeys... yamabushi of the mind, and lots of white space for taking your own cryptic outerspace trailnotes...
