Book Description
Nearly half of the Third World debt, or about $400 million, is owed by Latin America. How this has come about and what it means for Latin America's future are the subjects of twelve essays by experts on the Latin American debt problem. Despite their widely varied backgrounds and interests, the contributors aim toward a clearer understanding of the meaning of the debt problem and where it may be headed. A background sketch of the problem is provided, as is an account of attempts to cope with the protracted crisis. Detailed discussions follow of the largest debtors, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. The situations of the small Central American and Caribbean states are also treated. Finally, the volume explores the question of whether sovereign lending is really good business for banks or a good solution for these countries.

Book Description
The election of neo-conservative governments in Alberta and Ontario in the early 1990s brought dramatic changes to provincial public policy; both the Ralph Klein Revolution and Mike Harris' Common Sense Revolution emphasized fundamental changes in the role of government, balanced budgets, and the elimination of provincial debts. While public sector unions were forced to react, the response of the Alberta and Ontario unions differed significantly. The reasons, outcome, and long-term impact of the difference is the focus of Yonatan Reshef and Sandra Rastin's careful and revealing analysis.
The authors' argument concentrates on union responses to the neo-conservative transformation in the two affected provinces, but the scope of the discussion expands to cover such issues as the differences between the two regimes, the damage to the Ontario labour movement dealt by the labour-oriented NDP government, the limits of inter-union cooperation, and the role of modern unions in politics.
Lively and timely, Unions in the Time of Revolution places Canada's unions in the full context of the neo-conservative trend in provincial politics, and demonstrates the importance of individual union responses in times of such significant change.

A Must Read.......2004-06-07
Contrary to what our Canadian reviewer below says, this book is not "made up" information about Reagan. These are actual remarks Reagan made; Mark Green explains in fantastic-yet-brief detail just what makes a remark yet another Reagan whopper.
As for greatest President of the 20th century, sorry, but Reagan was one of the worst--he stood by while AIDS became a plague that would take 25,000 American lives during his tenure alone; illegally funded the Contras by selling arms to Iran (and lied about it until the facts wouldn't let him); supported death squads in Central America that committed such noble acts as raping nuns (to which Reagan claimed the rapists were acting in self-defense); poisoning America's political discourse by making it okay to slime and smear opponents at will; making it cool to be a racist again with his "welfare queens" mantra; raping the environment so the rich could get richer; shifting the tax burden mostly to the middle class, who, like idiots, all but thanked him for it; expanding the government into a bigger entity than it had ever been; running up record deficits; removing the Fairness Doctrine from our airwaves and thereby opening them for rabidly partisan hate speech; and--oh yeah--selling biological and chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein.
If you want to know what went wrong with political discourse in America, look no further than Reagan's reign of error.
All of this and more is in Mr. Green's fine collection of quotes-over 160 largish pages of them! I highly recommend this one.
Lies Revealed.......2003-10-26
This is a well-documented book on the lies and contridictions of Ronald Reagan. People who love Reagan beware, the truth hurts. Like Reagan says, facts are funny things. This would be a great gift to those people who believe that Reagan could be considered anything more than a terrible President.
The truth about Ronnie Raygun.......2000-02-28
This booklet is a classic. It's essentially a long, well-organized list of contradictory Reagan quotes - some from the same day. For example, "I love trees and think they are unique" versus "I think that if you've seen one tree, you've seen them all." If you have had a sneaking suspicion that there is/was something flaky about old Ronnie, confirm that suspicion with this booklet.
Book Description
Frank Zappa always did it differently, and here his fans do too. With delegates from Paris, Rome, Leipzig and Vauxhall, this parodic conference included papers called "'Arf': Canine Continuity in the Output Macrostructure" and "The Mental Hygiene Dilemma." Zen Buddhism, Frankfurt school Marxism, Philip K. Dick and the Zappologically Deranged are used to denounce Madonna, postmodernism, hippies and everything you hold dear. Priceless.
Ben Watson, music journalist and longstanding contributor to The Wire, Hi-Fi News and Signal To Noise, is well-known for his deviant and polemical music criticism and is an acknowledged expert on Frank Zappa.
Esther Leslie is a reader in humanities at Birkbeck College, University of London.

Paradox.......2006-05-20
I have read the following books written by or about Frank Zappa:
1. THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK by Frank Zappa and Peter Occhioigrosso
2. MOTHER! THE FRANK ZAPPA STORY by Michael Gray
3. FRANK ZAPPA: THE NEGATIVE DIALECTICS OF POODLE PLAY by Ben Watson
4. THE ACADEMY ZAPPA: PROCEEDINGS OF ESEMPLASTIC ZAPPA edited by Ben Watson and Esther Leslie
5. ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE: THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF FRANK ZAPPA by Neil Slaven
6. NECESSITY IS... THE EARLY YEARS OF FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION by Billy James
7. COSMIK DEBRIS: THE COLLECTIVE HISTORY AND IMPROVISATIONS OF FRANK ZAPPA by Greg Russo
8. NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL: THE SAGA OF FRANK ZAPPA by David Walley
9. FRANK ZAPPA: THE COMPLETE CUIDE TO HIS MUSIC by Ben Watcon
10. MY BROTHER WAS A MOTHER: AZAAPA FAMILY ALBUM by Patrice "Candy" Zappa
11. THEM OR US by Frank Zappa
12. UNDER THE SAME MOON by Suzannah Thana Harris
13. BEING FRANK: MY TIME WITH FRANK ZAPPA by Nigery Lennon
These titles are ranked in terms my perception of quality. THE ACADEMY ZAPPA: PROCEEDINGS OF ESEMPLASTIC ZAPPA is a collection of quasi-scholarly manuscripts presented at a quasi-academic conference on January 16, 2004 at Somers Town, London. Seventy-two people and two dogs were in attendance. Ironically, only one of the fourteen contributors originates from Frank's home country. I can only assume that the attendees represent the same ratio. Well, perhaps, that isn't ironic.
I have been an admirer Frank Zappa's work since 1964 when FREAK OUT! was released. Through reading THE ACADEMY ZAPPA: PROCEEDINGS OF ESEMPLASTIC ZAPPA, I found myself scratching my head in wonderment. Scattered throughout the chapters is an anti-intellectual theme. Yet, the authors commonly cite philosophers and abstract concepts that are frankly beyond the scope of a reader without a strong academic background. From my mind's eye, this volume is a real paradox.
Essentially, this body of work is an analysis and/or assessment of the psychological and sociological implications of Zappa's international influence on a wide range of topics. The editors note that these proceedings "do not promise to list everything" that Zappa has influenced, but "what Zappa's evident difference from regular mass and avantgarde music really is." In addition, a secondary plot emerges. Critical human themes found through the centuries are found in the works of Zappa. As a result, the contents of this monograph are not something that would interest anyone except those who are PROFOUNDLY devoted to the work of Frank Zappa. In many ways, reading this material is reminiscent of the works I confronted as a doctoral student. Hmmm, strange, that's how I reacted to Ben Watson's masterpiece, FRANK ZAPPA: THE NEGATIVE DIALECTIC OF POODLE PLAY. It made me think, but none the less the volume was a real hoot.
If you are up to really something that refines strange, get this book.

Book Description
Sounding the Center is an in-depth look at the power behind classical music and dance in Bangkok, the capital and sacred center of Buddhist Thailand. Focusing on the ritual honoring teachers of music and dance, Deborah Wong reveals a complex network of connections among kings, teachers, knowledge, and performance that underlies the classical court arts.
Drawing on her extensive fieldwork, Wong lays out the ritual in detail: the way it is enacted, the foods and objects involved, and the people who perform it, emphasizing the way the performers themselves discuss and construct aspects of the ceremony.

A Model for Media Democracy.......2006-07-24
(This review originally appeared in the 6/1/06 issue of the Commons newspaper, published in Brattleboro, Vermont.)
by Eesha Williams
The Pacifica Foundation owns five FM radio stations, each with powerful transmitters, in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Houston, and Berkeley, Calif. The network airs the popular radical daily news program Democracy Now! which is also heard on hundreds of independent stations across the country.
Anyone who donates $25 or volunteers three hours a year, can vote for delegates who in turn elect Pacifica's board of directors. By comparison, the board of National Public Radio is chosen by a byzantine method by which each member station gets one vote, regardless of whether that station has 1 million listeners or 1,000. And, NPR spokesperson Andi Sporkin tells the Commons, the person who casts the vote on behalf of each station is often him- or herself chosen by an unelected person, such as a university president.
Pacifica rejects corporate money. NPR's lifeblood is money paid by every company from Wal-Mart to your local SUV dealer for "underwriting messages," also known as commercials.
Pacifica started broadcasting in 1949, more than two decades before NPR went on the air.
Uneasy Listening by Matthew Lasar, who teaches history at the University of California in Santa Cruz, focuses on Pacifica's recent history, up to 2001. Published this year in England, Uneasy Listening has not yet been published in the US, but it's available from Amazon.
Lasar's 1999 book Pacifica Radio: The Rise of an Alternative Network, published by Temple University Press, covered the first half of Pacifica's history.
Both are fascinating reads filled with colorful mini-biographies of the quirky people involved in Pacifica. The newer book, which is considerably longer, tends to ramble and would probably have been just as useful if a third of its pages were cut.
The 1999 book should serve as inspiration to today's generation of non-commercial radio pioneers who have in the past few years launched dozens of so-called "low-power FM" stations around the country - many with help from the Philadelphia non-profit Prometheus Radio Project.
Starting with very little money just after World War II, the founders of KPFA in Berkeley built a radical institution that grew to become a nation-wide network and has endured for more than half a century.
Lasar's second book tells a more cautionary tale. Uneasy Listening focuses on the mid-life crisis that beset Pacifica from 1999-2001 and which, at the time, seemed to many observers to mark the beginning of the end of Pacifica as an alternative to NPR and commercial radio. Instead, the network emerged stronger, with a new and far more democratic constitution. But by the time that had happened, activists had revealed to the public acts of corruption by Pacifica's leadership including squandering hundreds of thousands of dollars on corporate PR and security firms. The revelations, picked up by the New York Times and other national media, brought thousands of protesters into the streets in front of Pacifica stations.
Uneasy Listening can be read as an inspirational tale whose moral is that even the most corrupt and least democratic of institutions can be democratized by the efforts of thousands of ordinary people acting together. The book can also be read as a warning to the new generation of non-profit radio stations, newspapers, community news web sites, and public access TV stations that are appearing across the country. Too often they are run by boards of directors that are self-appointed or otherwise not elected by the public.
In writing an exhaustive and sympathetic history of Pacifica, Lasar has performed a valuable service for those who care about the future of locally- and democratically-controlled news media.
------------
Eesha Williams writes for the Valley Advocate newspaper in Easthampton, Mass. A revised edition of his book Grassroots Journalism will be published by Dollars & Sense in the fall of 2006.
Listener Sponsored Radio and its Discontents.......2005-11-20
This superb book takes on the very difficult task of explaining the bafflingly endless power struggles that have afflicted Pacifica Radio for a half century.
It does so by placing these struggles in the historical context of media and communications consolidation in the U.S., as well as the struggle of the American left and American alternative culture to find media outlets and be a serious part of the politics of this country.
The story told here is not the typical story that those involved with the stations know. I think it is a story that has great importance for understanding why leftist discourse has become so marginalized in our time. The standard narratives are (1) that establishment corporate forces descended upon Pacifica in the late 90s and were repelled by the heroic true Pacificans; or (2) that childish out-of-touch leftists compulsively bash each other, imagining they are fighting to save the world. Lasar carefully introduces the reader to all the forces that play out in this struggle, leading the reader to appreciate the complexity of those forces, and to appreciate why it is so hard for progressives and supporters of noncommerical media to not repeat the rhetorically overheated infighting that sadly continues to dominate Pacifica politics.
Since what is ultimately at stake here is the possibility of
having an honest and truthful media outlet in America, both
those who listen to Pacifica and those who have barely heard of
it should find this book very important and very compelling.

Book Description
From the mid-19th century through World War I, Turner societies were among the most important secular organizations in German immigrant communities in America. Brought to the United States by refugees from the failed Revolution of 1848 in Germany, the Turner movement became a home for German abolitionists, workers' rights advocates, and other reformers. The societies were major centers of social, cultural, and athletic activities, particularly in the cities of the East and Midwest, and so played an important role in maintaining German culture while helping immigrants to adapt to American society. This book is the result of a project to locate the surviving documentation on the Turner movement, little of which was found in libraries or archives at the time the project began. The book shows that the extent of the movement, the range of its interests and activities, and the richness of its publishing record were much greater than has been appreciated. With an annotated bibliography, descriptions of archival collections, historical sketches of more than 150 societies, and an annotated list of all societies found in the United States, the research guide opens up new opportunities for examining the influence of Turners and German-Americans on the development of American society.

Pathetic.......2007-07-03
After reading this book (partially )I just found it a terrible attempt to simplify history. If you are willing to repeat like a parrot phrases out of their context, buy the book. This will prove people your "knowledge" of the subject. If you are willing to understand history avoid buying this book. Overall, the book has strong views on many issues and does not provide proper explanations. Save your money.
Book Description
While we are on the inside looking out at the physical world, we are attached to a physical body that is a part of that world. We have to move our physical body through the physical reality it occupies, and we have to do so safely if we are to survive.
How does the outside world get inside, into our head and how do we then command our body to adjust itself so that we move effectively in the physical world of which it is a part?
We stand bouncing a basketball on the foul line of a basketball court. Fifteen feet in front of us, and ten feet above the ground, is a backboard with an attached circular hoop. That hoop, at eighteen inches, is only slightly larger than the ball we are bouncing, and the center point of the hoop is exactly fifteen inches away from the backboard.
How can we see something at that distance? How does the physical reality of the hoop travel the intervening distance and get into our head? How do we command our muscles to move in such a way that we can make the ball we are bouncing move through the intervening space in a manner that it can drop through the hoop?
More to the point, what is it about what goes on in our head that allows us to make the decision to show up at the basketball court and shoot the hoop in the first place?
How the Body Really Works explains how we evolved to be what we are, animate matter that is not only ambulatory, that can not only move within the environment, but can do so successfully, and, in addition, can do so with sentience, in a manner that allows us to alter the environment to our benefit. Excellent even if dated.......2000-12-30
This is an amazingly comprehensive look at European Bat Conservation programs circa 1988. The book is written before the creation of EUROBATS which is unfortunate. As a reference material however, it is an excellent and very thorough look at the Bat populations in various European countries, techniques that are effective for Bat preservation, and threats to Bats throughout Europe. Very well done.
Book Description

Description:
Worldwide, there are more than 1100 species of the Order Chiroptera, 45 of which are present in Europe, and 16 in the UK. Bats are reservoirs of, or can be infected by, several viral diseases, including rabies virus strains (in the Lyssavirus genus). Within this genus are bat variants that have been recorded in Europe; European bat lyssavirus 1 (EBLV-1), European bat lyssavirus 2 (EBLV-2) and, four currently unclassified isolates. Since 1977, 783 cases of EBLVs (by isolation of viral RNA) have been recorded in Europe. EBLV-1 or EBLV-2 has been identified in 12 bat species, with over 95% of EBLV-1 infections identified in Eptesicus serotinus. EBLV-2 is associated with Myotis species (Myotis daubentonii and Myotis dasycneme). A programme of passive surveillance in the United Kingdom between 1987 and 2004 tested 4871 bats for lyssaviruses. Of these, four M. daubentonii (3.57% of submitted M. daubentonii) were positive for EBLV-2. Potential bias in the passive surveillance includes possible over-representation of synanthropic species and regional biases caused by varying bat submission numbers from different parts of the UK. In 2003, active surveillance in the UK began, and has detected an antibody prevalence level of 1-5% of EBLV-2 in M. daubentonii (n=350), and one bat with antibodies to EBLV-1 in E. serotinus (n=52). No cases of live lyssavirus infection or lyssavirus viral RNA have been detected through active surveillance. Further research and monitoring regarding prevalence, transmission, pathogenesis and immunity is required to ensure that integrated bat conservation continues throughout Europe, whilst enabling informed policy decision regarding both human and wildlife health issues.
